Born March 20, 1920, she was a daughter of the late Jerry and Vinney Roman Smith. She attended Lee County public schools. Survivors include two daughters, Mary L. Taylor of Elliott and Geneva Holloman of Lynchburg; 26 grandchildren; and 17 great-grandchildren. FLORENCE — Emory Neil Lane Sr., 63, of 301 Lansdale Drive, husband of Ruby Richburg Lane, died Monday, Sept. 17, 2001, at a Florence hospital after an illness. Born in Williamsburg County, he was a son of the late Joseph Eston and Sadie Duke Lane. He was a member of Eastside Christian Church. He was employed by Carolina Supply House and was a veteran of the U.S. Air Force. Survivors besides his wife of Florence include a son, Emory Neil Lane Jr. of Darlington; a daughter, Connie Lane Driggers of Florence; two brothers, J.E. Lane Jr. and Lloyd R. Lane, both of Kingstree; three sisters, Carolyn L. McConnell and Grace L. Robinson, both of Kingstree, and Miriam L. McCain of Effingham; and five grandchildren, Garrett Driggers, Justin Driggers, Shawn Driggers, Taylor Lane and Cameron Lane. Robert J. Lavelle, 55, died Friday, Sept. 14, 2001, at Dorn Veterans Medical Center in Columbia. Born in Rochester, N.Y., he was a son of the late Patrick H. and Margaret Hughes Lavelle. He served in the U.S. Marine Corps and was self-employed in the body shop industry. He was of the Catholic faith. Survivors include a sister, Mary Ann Lavelle of Rochester. He was preceded in death by two brothers, Richard A. Lavelle and Patrick H. Lavelle. Harold “Moe” Moses, 69, husband of Ada Slater Moses, died Friday, Sept. 14, 2001, at Tuomey Regional Medical Center. Born June 25, 1931, in Sumter County, he was a son of the late Pate Moses Sr. and Mariah Porter Moses. He attended Clark School and Lincoln High School. In his youth, he joined Clark United Methodist Church. He served in the U.S. Army and was awarded the National Defense Service Medal. After serving in the Army, he moved to New York City, where he was employed with the Welbilt Electric Co. in May of 1996. While in New York, he attended Plymouth Congregational Church. Survivors include a son, Rodney Moses of Brooklyn, N.Y.; two daughters, Sharonlyn Moses Polk of Sumter and Zandra Y. Moses Brockman of Brooklyn; two brothers, Theodore Moses and Pate Moses Jr. of New York, N.Y.; two sisters, Mary Kennedy and Agnes Prince; three brothers-in-law; and eight sisters-in-law. Funeral services will be held at 4 p.m. Thursday at Clark United Methodist Church with the Rev. Willie Lawson, pastor, officiating, assisted by the Rev. Albert Thomas, the Rev. William Prince, the Rev. George Johnson, Dr. H.B. Shaw and Minister Aurelia Hill. Burial will be in the church cemetery. The casket will be placed in the church at 3 p.m. Thursday. Willie Jenkins Sr., 75, husband of Corine Thompson Jenkins, died Saturday, Sept. 29, 2001, at Tuomey Regional Medical Center. Born Jan. 16, 1926, in Sumter, he was a son of the late Ben Porter and Cleo Lonon Davis. He attended Sumter County public schools. In his youth, he was a member of Ebenezer Presbyterian Church and later joined Macedonia Baptist Church, where he was baptized. He later moved his membership to Bethlehem Baptist Church, where he served as a trustee and member of the senior choir until his health failed. He was a member of the International F&AM Masons Pride of Sumter Lodge No. 35, King David Royal Arch No. 2, Job Knights Templar No. 2, Salaam Temple No. 17 Shriners and past president of Marshalls Council. He served in the Coast Guard for a period of time. Survivors besides his wife include two sons, Willie Jenkins Jr. and Bobby Lee Jenkins, both of Sumter; a daughter, Ruby Jenkins Croskey of Sumter; a brother, Robert Lee Davis of White Plains, N.J.; a sister, Irene Rembert of Brooklyn, N.Y.; a cousin, Aiken Lonon of Sumter; seven grandchildren; and 13 great-grandchildren. He was preceded in death by a brother, John Davis; four sisters, Fannie Lowery, Mamie Davis, Mae Holmes and Ella Mellerson; and a brother-in-law, Herbert Mellerson. He was a member of the IAMAW Union and the Smyrna Congregation of Jehovah’s Witnesses. BISHOPVILLE — Bessie Landers Ritchie, 102, widow of Robert C. Ritchie, died Saturday, Oct. 6, 2001. Born Feb. 14, 1899, in Carpenter, Miss., she was a daughter of the late C.W. and Louise Toumey Landers. She was the oldest member of the First Baptist Church, member of the Golden Ladies and a resident of Townsend Terrace. She spent of her life in Eudora, Ark., and has been a resident of Bishopville for the past 15 years. She is survived by one daughter, Patricia Johnson, of Bishopville; three grandchildren, Basil Max Johnson II of Brunswick, Ga., Norma and Dr. Trey Johnson Chandler of Greenville, and Kristie and Wally Johnson Keziah of Bishopville; three great-grandchildren, Madaline Marie Chandler, Mary Elizabeth Chandler, both of Greenville, and Haleigh Virginia Keziah, of Bishopville and several nieces and nephews, including nephew Mike and Annette Ritchie and children of Sumter. George Edward Holland, 81, husband of Regina K. Holland, died Thursday, Oct. 4, 2001, at Mariner Healthcare East. Born Dec. 10, 1919, in Sumter County, he was a son of the late William and Carolina Holland. He attended the Sumter public school system. He was retired from Georgia Pacific after 41 years of service. Early in life he was a member of Beulah U.M.E Church; later he became a member of Trinity Baptist Church where he served as a deacon. Survivors beside his wife include four sons, Kenneth Holland, Johnny Lee Holland, Derrick E. Holland and Eric A. Holland, all of Sumter; one daughter, Priscilla Holland; one stepson, Reginald V. Lyons of Sumter; and one stepdaughter, Tamika T. Salley of Sumter. He was proceeded in death by his first wife, Dorothy Merchant Holland.
