EFFINGHAM — Hubert Allen, 57, of 4421 Armfield Road, Effingham, died Sunday, Oct. 28, 2001, in a Florence area hospital after an illness. Born July 19, 1944, in Florence County, he was a son of the late Leo and Arlen Allen. He worked in the timber industry for a number of years as a truck driver. He enjoyed cooking, hunting, fishing and spending time with his family. Survivors include a son, Jason Hubert Allen of Sumter; three daughters, Carol Stevenson and her husband, Scott, and Rebecca Marie Allen, both of Florence, and Kimberly Anne Quick of Darlington; two brothers, Howard Allen of Sumter and Robert Allen of Florence; two sisters, Helen Freeman and Thelma Harrell of Florence; and seven grandchildren. He was preceded in death by a son, Hubert “Bucky” Allen, who died in 1981. Funeral services will be held at 2 p.m. Wednesday in the chapel of Kistler-Hardee Funeral Home of Darlington. MANNING — Alphonso Conyers, 56, husband of Eloise Stukes Conyers, died Friday, Oct. 26, 2001, at Tuomey Regional Medical Center in Sumter. Born Nov. 16, 1944, in the Halleytown section of Clarendon County, he was a son of Corine Martin Conyers and the late Deacon George Conyers Sr. He was a graduate of Manning Training School, Central Carolina Technical College and Florence-Darlington Technical College. In his youth, he joined Mt. Chapel Baptist Church. He was retired from Cooper Tools of Sumter. He had opened his own business, Manufacturing Outsourcing Solutions. Survivors besides his mother and wife, both of the home, include a son, Alphonso Vidal Conyers of Columbia; three daughters, Shaneki Iasha Conyers-Williams of Charlotte, N.C., Teyanna Monique Conyers of the home and Pamela Denise Conyers-Wade of Fort Bragg, N.C.; five brothers, Leroy Conyers of Waycross, Ga., Ulysess Conyers, Eugene Conyers and Marcellus Conyers, all of Manning, and Richard Conyers of Sumter; a sister, Creola Morgan of Baltimore, Md.; and five grandchildren. He was preceded in death by a brother, George Conyers Jr. Funeral services will be held at 3 p.m. Wednesday at Gum Spring Missionary Baptist Church, Silver community, U.S. 15, Pinewood, with the Rev. O.J. Hannah, pastor, officiating, assisted by the Rev. G.W. Pugh, the Rev. Alfred D. Heyward and Minister Ranzy McFadden. Burial will be in the church cemetery. PHILADELPHIA, Pa. — Granrue Jones, 73, widower of Harriett Mary Jefferson Jones, died Sunday, Oct. 21, 2001, at his home in Philadelphia. Born in Georgetown County, he was a son of the late Cephus and Lizzie Jones. He graduated from St. Matthews High School in Sumter County. He attended Lion Technical Institute in Pennsylvania and graduated as an electronic technician. He was employed as an electronic troubleshooter at Princeton University in New Jersey and after an extended 20 years of employment, he retired from General Electric Co. as a technician. He was a member of Prince Hall Masonic Chapter No. 131 in the jurisdiction of Pennsylvania. Survivors include his children; six brothers, Elder Joseaphus Jones of Levittown, Pa., Avant, Thomas and Bernard Jones, all of Philadelphia, and Gerald and Leon Jones, both of Sumter; three sisters, Cleo Hudson and Flora Thompson, both of Sumter, and Channie Goodman of Folsom, Pa.; a number of grandchildren and great-grandchildren. Etta Lou Nelson, widow of Slick Nelson, died Tuesday, Oct. 23, 2001, at her home. Born Nov. 20, 1912, in Clarendon County, she was a daughter of the late Louis Brogdon and Rena Fleming Brogdon. She was raised in the Clarendon County community. She was a graduate of Manning High School. She attended Biggers AME Church. She later moved to Washington, D.C., where she was employed as a nurse. After marriage, she moved to Sumter, where she was employed as a private duty nurse and also worked part-time at Ward’s Bar-B-Que and Sumter Laundry and Cleaners. Survivors include two brothers, Willard Brogdon of Turbeville and Lester Brogdon of Suffolk, Va.; six nephews and seven nieces. She was preceded in death by two brothers, Lewis Oliver Brogdon and Woodrow Brogdon; and three sisters, Naomi Brogdon, Teresa Norwood and Algia Keith. Graveside services will be held at 2 p.m. today at Biggers AME Church Cemetery, S.C. 261, Manning, with the Rev. Francis Gathers officiating. Burial will be in the church cemetery. The funeral procession will leave at 1 p.m. today from Palmer Memorial Chapel in route to Biggers AME Church cemetery. Eddore Branch Nunez, 51, wife of Felix Nunez, died Tuesday, Oct. 23, 2001, at Tuomey Regional Medical Center. Born Nov. 14, 1949, in Wedgefield, she was a daughter of the late Leroy Branch and Janie R. Taylor Branch. She was a stepdaughter of Annie Mae Green Branch. She attended Sumter public schools. In her youth, she was baptized at Tiverton Baptist Church in Wedgefield, where she was a member. She served on the usher board as secretary, the gospel choir and the Tivertonettes. She was one of the principle founders of the Mission Reaching Out Christian Center Jesus is the Answer Inc., and served as secretary and treasurer. She was a Christian Worker in Action for Christ field worker and a member of their board of directors. She attended Faith Deliverance Tabernacle Church of Sumter, where she served as usher board president, Sunday school secretary and finance committee secretary. Survivors besides her husband of the home and her stepmother of Wedgefield include a daughter, Andrea Teresa Branch of Sumter; five brothers, Fred Anthony Taylor of Georgetown, Willie James Washington of Roanoke, Va., Sammie Branch of New London, Conn., Henry Branch of Sumter and William Green; 10 sisters, Georgia Serita Harris of Georgetown, Claudia Washington of Myrtle Beach, Janie Ruth Branch Mitchell, Lachan Washington Troy and Theresa Terrie Williams Morris, all of Bronx, N.Y., Alice Branch Robinson of Rembert, Annie Lee Branch of New London, Conn., Mary Lee Branch, Edna Branch and Geneva Branch, all of Wedgefield; and three grandchildren. Arthur Eli Conyers, 62, husband of Rozenia Parker Conyers, died Monday, Oct. 29, 2001, at Tuomey Regional Medical Center. Born Nov. 10, 1938, in Clarendon County, he was a son of the late Arthur Conyers and Mellison Caldwell Conyers. He attended Clarendon County public schools. In his youth, he joined St. Mark Baptist Church. He was employed by Georgia Pacific Co. before he retired in 1982. He served as president of the Furniture Workers of America local 273 for a number of years and was also a member of the International F and AM Masons. Survivors besides his wife include five sons, Wilbur Conyers, Alvin Conyers, Michael Conyers, Rodney Conyers and Elroy Conyers; three daughters, Mellisa Conyers, Angela Edwards and Felicia Rose; a foster sister, Margaret Williams; 13 grandchildren; and two great-grandchildren. He was preceded in death by Alfonso Conyers and Blease Conyers. Funeral services will be held at 3 p.m. Friday at St. Mark Baptist Church in Silver with the Rev. W.J. Chandler, pastor, officiating, assisted by Elder Johnson, Evangelist Helen Prince, Minister Evangel Barnes and the Rev. L.W. Barnes. Burial will be in the church cemetery. LAKE WYLIE — Frank J. Geddings of Lake Wylie and Charlotte, N.C., husband of Dell K. Geddings, died Friday, Oct. 26, 2001. Born in Pinewood, he was a son of the late Lucius George Geddings and Ruth Hulda Geddings. He was a member of First Christian Church. He was a member and past president of Piedmont Laundry and Cleaners Association, a member of Excelsior Masonic Lodge No. 261, the Derita Chapter No. 326 OES and former member of Eastway Christian Church. He was a World War II veteran and served on the battleship The USS Nevada. He was a dry cleaner and began his career in the industry in Sumter, where he was then owner-operator of Harleyville Dry Cleaners. He moved to Charlotte in 1950 and worked with a number of local cleaners in the 1950s and 1960s. In the early 1970s, he became owner and operator of Coachman Cleaners on Park Road. He was a graduate of the National Institute of Dry Cleaning in Silver Springs, Md. Survivors besides his wife of 57 years include two brothers, Vernon Geddings of Havelock, N.C., and Bob Geddings of Chester, Va.; a sister, Ruth Ann Barrineau of Sumter; and a number of nephews and nieces. He was preceded in death by five brothers, Leon, James, Charlie, Marion and S.M. A service of remembrance will be held at 2 p.m. Sunday at First Christian Church, 1200 E. Boulevard, with the Rev. Jolin Wilks officiating. The family will receive friends immediately following the service. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to the Geddings Endowment Fund, First Christian Church, 1200 E. In his youth, he joined Rock Hill Baptist Church. He was a retired farmer. MAYESVILLE — Hugh “Bug” Wilson died Saturday, Oct. 27, 2001, at his home in Mayesville. Born July 10, 1946, in Sumter County, he was a son of the late Moses Wilson Sr. and Margaret Green Wilson. He was a 1966 graduate of Mt. Pleasant High School in Elliott. He served in the United States Army. He retired from DuPont/May Plant in Lugoff after 35 years of employment. He received his early Christian experience at the St. Rest Apostolic Holiness Church in Mayesville. He was a part of the Wilson Singers led by his grandmother, the late Elder Sister Essie Wilson. Survivors include a brother, Moses Wilson Jr. of Sumter; and three sisters, Rosa Harris of Baltimore, Md., Lillie Mae Greene of New York, N.Y., and Cheryl Titus of Mayesville.
