ESSIE M. HAM
NEW ZION — Essie McKenzie Ham, 70, widow of Eugene “Punch” Ham, died Tuesday, Nov. 20, 2001, at Tuomey Regional Medical Center.
Born May 2, 1931, in New Zion, she was a daughter of the late Ezekiel McKenzie and Oliva Rose McKenzie.
The family will receive friends at the residence, 1387 Knowlton Road in the Black Bottom community of New Zion.
Services will be announced by Samuels Funeral Home of Manning.

BEVERLY G. GLOVER
Beverly Gathers Glover, 48, wife of Otis Glover of Sparta, Ga., died Saturday, Nov. 17, 2001, at Tuomey Regional Medical Center.
Born Feb. 24, 1953, in Statesburg, she was a daughter of Charles and Essie Mae Loney Gathers of Dalzell. She was a lifelong member of High Hill Baptist Church, where she served on the usher board, choir and taught Sunday school as part of the church school ministry. After marriage, she became a member of the Hickory Grove Baptist Church in Sparta, Ga., where she willingly shared her gifts and talents whenever needed. She was educated in the public schools of Sumter County and was graduated from Hillcrest High School in 1971. In 1975, she earned a bachelor of science degree in early childhood education from Benedict College in Columbia and obtained a master’s degree in early childhood education from Fort Valley State University in Fort Valley, Ga., in 1989. She taught in both Georgia and South Carolina public school systems. She was a dedicated member of the Delta Sigma Theta sorority.
Survivors include four brothers, Warren Gathers of Edison, N.J., Charles Gathers of Camden, Jerome Gathers of Columbia and Ronnie Gathers of Laurel, Md.; and a sister, Iris Streater of Darlington.
Services will be held at 2 p.m. Friday at High Hill Baptist Church in Dalzell, with the Rev. Ellie Palmer, pastor, officiating.
Viewing will be from 9 a.m. to noon Friday at Palmer Memorial Chapel.
A Delta Sigma Theta sorority service will be held at 10 a.m. Friday morning at Palmer Memorial Chapel.
The remains will be placed in the church for viewing at 1 p.m.
Burial will be in High Hill Baptist Church Cemetery.
Honorary pallbearers and flower bearers will be the Hillcrest High School class of 1971.
The family will receive friends at the home of her parents, 2600 S.C. 261 North in Dalzell.
Palmer Memorial Chapel is in charge of the arrangements.

KATIE TAYLOR
Katie Taylor, 94, widow of Wilson Taylor, died Saturday, Nov. 17, 2001, at Tuomey Regional Medical Center.
Born March 28, 1907, in Lee County, she was a daughter of the late Johnny Blanding and Dorcus Yates Blanding. She received her education at Kindall Institute in Sumter. As a young woman, she moved to Brooklyn, N.Y., where she received her certificate in geriatric and pediatric nursing. She joined the Zion Temple GOGIC, and before retiring as a social worker and counselor for the city of New York, she received numerous accolades and recognitions for her dedicated services. After returning to Sumter, she became affiliated with Mt. Pisgah AME Church, where she was a class leader and member of the Stewardess and Women’s Missionary Society.
Survivors include a son, Yancey Jennings of Sumter; three daughters, Louise Simmons of Sumter, Mamie Matthew of Malvern, N.Y., and Ellouise Velazquez of Virginia Beach, Va.; one adopted daughter, Sandra Hammond of Columbia; and 10 grandchildren and seven great-grandchildren.
Funeral services will be at 1 p.m. Friday at Mt. Pisgah AME Church, 217 W. Bartlette St., with the Rev. Johnny Yeadon, pastor, officiating. He will be assisted by the Rev. Ricky Simmons, the Rev. James Brunson and the Rev. Sammie Simmons.
Burial will be in Hillside Memorial Park.
Pallbearers will be nephews. Floral bearers will be stewardesses and the Missionary Society of Mt. Pisgah AME Church.
The funeral procession will leave at 12:30 p.m. from the home of her daughter, Louise Simmons, 2645 Yank Haven Drive. The family will also receive friends at the home.
The remains will be placed in the church at noon.
Williams Funeral Home Inc. is in charge of the arrangements.

ANNIE M. BRYAN
BEAUFORT — Annie “Pet” Mitchell Bryan, 80, died Sunday, Nov. 18, 2001, at Beaufort Memorial Hospital.
Born Nov. 29, 1920, in St. Paul, she was a sister of Wilhemina Robinson of Santee.
Services will be held at 11 a.m. Monday at Ebenezer Baptist Church, St. Helena Island.
The family will receive friends from 4 to 8 p.m. today at Chisholm Galloway Home for Funerals, Beaufort.
Chisholm Galloway Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.

ANDREW DEWAR
Andrew Dewar, 75, husband of Mary Kelly Dewar, died Friday, Nov. 23, 2001, at Tuomey Regional Medical Center in Sumter.
Born in Hamilton, Scotland, he was a son of the late David and Francis Cosgrove Dewar.
He attended the Canadian Institute of Management and was a World War II veteran of the Royal Air Force. Dewar moved from Scotland to Canada and then the United States. He was well traveled, well loved, and he touched the lives of thousands. He attended St. Anne’s Catholic Church.
Survivors besides his wife of Florida include a daughter, Carol Ann Dewar Withers of Sumter; two brothers, John Dewar and David Dewar, both of Florida; three sisters, Francis Dewar Barrett of Loch Lomond, Scotland, Rosemary Dewar Bowhan of Wishaw, Scotland, and Sadie Dewar Murray of Chatham, Canada; and two grandchildren, Elise and Breanna Withers of Sumter.
Services will be at 5 p.m. Monday in the chapel of Bullock Funeral Home with Father McKay officiating.
Bullock Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.

MARTHA Z. HUTCHINSON
SUMMERTON — Martha Zalesky “Peggy” Hutchinson, 78, wife of Horace H. Hutchinson, died Friday, Nov. 23, 2001, in Clarendon Memorial Hospital in Manning.
Born Nov. 25, 1922, in Lynch, Ky., she was a daughter of the late Alexander and Catherine Sabo Zalesky. She was a retired beautician and a member of Lake Marion Baptist Church.
Survivors besides her husband include a daughter, Lois Debbie Hutchinson of Summerton; a son, Thomas E. Hutchinson of Phoenix; and a sister, Margie Drosick of Pocahontas, Va.
She was preceded in death by two sons, John Wesley Carney and Lloyd E. Carney.
Services will be at 2 p.m. Tuesday in Stephens Funeral Home Chapel in Manning with the Rev. Kenneth Tompkins officiating.
Burial will be in Clarendon Memorial Gardens in Manning.
The family will receive friends from 6 to 8 p.m. Monday at Stephens Funeral Home and at other times at the residence.

ROSA L. MILLER
PHILADELPHIA — Rosa Lee Miller, 76, widow of Hurbert Choice, died Friday, Nov. 16, 2001, at Albert Einstern Medical Center.
Born April 30, 1925, in Sumter County, she was a daughter of Julia Cokers and the late Sam Benjamin Sr. She was a member of Bethel AME Church and was educated in Sumter County public schools. She was retired from the Peaks Laundry Cleaners in Philadelphia.
Survivors include a son, William Choice of Philadelphia; a stepdaughter, Thomasenia McCall of North Carolina; two brothers, Sam Benjamin Jr. of Charlotte, N.C., and Elijah Benjamin of New York; three sisters, Elizabeth Harvin, Lillian Davis and Iona Jones, all of Sumter; four grandchildren; and two great-grandchildren.
The remains will be placed in the church at 10 a.m. Monday.
Services will be at 11 a.m. Monday at Bethel AME Church, Wedgefield, with the Rev. Jack Lewis Jr. officiating.
Burial will be in the churchyard cemetery.
The funeral procession will leave the home of her sister and brother-in-law, Elizabeth and Vivian Harvin, 3800 Wedgefield Road.
The family will receive friends at the same address.
Community Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.

NEAL O. JONES
Neal O’Donald Jones, 63, husband of Thelma Wells Jones, died Saturday, Nov. 17, 2001, at Tuomey Regional Medical Center.
Born Jan. 25, 1938, in Sumter County, he was a son of the late Neal Jones and Malvenia Scott. He was educated in the Sumter County public schools and was employed.
Survivors include four sons, William, Ronnie, Charles and Steve Jones, all of Sumter; a stepson, Roy Wells; four daughters, Ruby Ann Tindal of Wedgefield, and Minnie Billie, Mickey and Ruth Ann Jones, all of Sumter; three stepdaughters, Rosa McBride, Mona Lisa White and Pamela Banks, all of Sumter; 30 grandchildren; and three great-grandchildren.
Services will be at Faith Enterprise Church, 1018 U.S. 521 South, with the Rev. Albert McKnight officiating.
Burial will be in Bradford Cemetery.
The funeral procession will leave the home, 22 Sims St., Sumter, at 1:15 p.m.
The family will receive friends at 22 Sims St., Sumter.
Community Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.

BISHOPVILLE — Jerry R. Boykin died Sunday, Nov. 25, 2001, at a local nursing center.

RIMINI — Susan E. “Coot” Nelson, 92, widow of Solomon “Blood” Nelson, died Saturday, Nov. 24, 2001, at Tuomey Regional Medical Center in Sumter after a brief illness. Born in Rimini community of Clarendon County, she was a daughter of the late Ben King Nelson and Nancy McKnight Nelson. The family will receive friends at the home, 9395 Lakeisha Road, Rimini. Services will be announced by Fleming Funeral Home of Summerton.

MAGGIE I. RAGIN
SUMMERTON — Maggie Isaac Ragin, 86, widow of Charlie Ragin, died Sunday, Nov. 25, 2001, at Tuomey Regional Medical Center. Born Aug. 6, 1915, in Clarendon County, she was a daughter of the late George and Luetina Nelson Isaac. The family will receive friends at the home, 1090 Rapid Edge Trail, St. Paul community, Summerton. Services will be announced by Dyson’s Home for Funerals of Summerton.

KIRK ROUSE
ELLIOTT — Kirk Rouse, 74, widower of Annie Melton Rouse, died Sunday, Nov. 25, 2001, at Tuomey Regional Medical Center in Sumter.
Born June 17, 1927, in Lee County, he was a son of the late Moss and Neoni Rouse.
The family will receive friends at the home, 58 Colonial Circle, Bishopville.
Services will be announced by Commercial Funeral Home of Lynchburg.

FT. PIERCE, Fla. — Noah Smith died Thursday, Nov. 22, 2001, at the Longwood Medical Center. He was born May 28, 1952, in Lee County. The family will receive friends at the home of Jessie Smith, 124 Holy Lane, Lynchburg. Services will be announced by Community Funeral Home of Sumter.
