TROY, Ohio — Doris Ella Clark Brown, 81, widow of Herman Lee Clark and Everett Leslie Brown, died Monday, Dec. 17, 2001, at Upper Valley Medical Center in Troy.
Born May 15, 1920, in Milton, W.Va., she was a daughter of the late Thomas Allen Brown and Pearl Lee Reynolds. She was a member of Nazarene Church in Lake Okachobee, Fla. She was a private duty nurse while living in Florida.
Survivors include three sons, Kenneth Lee Clark and Gary Richard Clark of Troy and Roger Dale Clark and his wife, Loretta, of Sumter, S.C.; a sister, Margaret Clark of Florida; five grandchildren, Karen Sponaugle, Laura Wildenhaus, Julie Martin, Brian Clark and Douglas Clark; and five great-grandchildren, Jarrett Tyler, Rachel Tyler, Elizabeth Wildenhaus, Kara Lynn Wildenhaus and Conan Martin.
She was preceded in death by two brothers, Boyd and Ernest Brown; and a sister, Ethel Phillips.
Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m. Thursday at Baird Funeral Home in Troy. Burial will be in Riverside Cemetery in Troy.
The family will receive friends from 5 to 8 p.m. today at the funeral home.

ELGIN — Wattola Juel Dawson Garner, 93, widow of Jesse T. Garner, died Tuesday, Dec. 18, 2001.
Born in Knoxville, Tenn., she was a daughter of the late Avery Glenn and Wattola Sarratt Dawson. She was a member of Hillcrest Baptist Church. She was a Charleston Navy Yard employee during World War II, outfitting ships for launch. After the war, she was a practical nurse in Kershaw County and later opened her own interior decorating business.
Survivors include a son, Walter “W.C.” Bowen Jr. of Gaston; a daughter, Madge Black Strickland of Manning; 11 grandchildren, Terry, Larry, Tony, David and Daniel Strickland, Leon Black Jr. and Kenneth Black, Cindi Kocki, Tina Morgan, Jamie and Walter Charlie Bowen III; 20 great-grandchildren; and five great-great-grandchildren.
She was preceded in death by a son, Julian Leon Black; two brothers, Floyd Dawson and Bevis Dawson; and two sisters, Ruth Kelly and Hanson Dawson.
Funeral services will be held at 2 p.m. Friday at Hillcrest Baptist Church with the Rev. Kenneth Jackson and the Rev. Terry Strickland officiating. Burial will be in the church cemetery.

MANNING — Bessie Gamble Gordon, widow of Johnny Ervin Gordon, died Sunday, Dec. 16, 2001, at Mariner Health of Sumter West.
Born May 10, 1924, in Manning, she was a daughter of the late Edward Gamble and Irene Brown Gamble. She was a devoted member of Ebenezer Missionary Baptist Church, where she served faithfully on several auxiliaries including the deaconess board, Sunday school and Missionary Society, where she served as president for a number of years.
In 1993, the church recognized her outstanding devotion, contributions and service by selecting her as the Woman of the Year. She was very active with the Black River Association and the Woman’s State Convention, having served as a delegate to several conventions. She was a member of the executive board of the Black River Woman’s Convention and board member-ambassador with the Black River Sunday School Convention. In later years, she retired as queen of the Black River Missionary Convention, having held that title for several consecutive years. In civic affairs, she was equally effective as an ardent worker and supporter of the Manning branch of the NAACP and served as a member of the executive committee and woman of the year committee for a number of years. Other affiliations included membership in the YWCA Lodge and the National Council of Negro Women.
Survivors include two sons, Johnny Gordon and his wife, Margaret, of Manning and James L. Gordon of Santee; two daughters, Beulah G. Roberts and her husband, Joe, and Gwendolyn G. Nelson and her husband, Wayne, both of Manning; a sister, Eleanor Coubatrous of Sumter; four grandchildren; and three great-grandchildren.
She was preceded in death by a son, Henry Eugene Gordon.
Funeral services will be held at 2:30 p.m. Thursday at Ebenezer Missionary Baptist Church in Manning with the Rev. George P. Windley Sr., the Rev. Clarence Hilton, the Rev. Mitchell Adger, the Rev. Michelle W. Holland, the Rev. Henry McCray and Minister Leroy McElveen officiating. Burial will be in Manning Cemetery.
The casket will be placed in the church at 1:30 p.m. Thursday until the time of the funeral service.
