HERBERT PEARSON
Herbert Pearson, 72, husband of Ruby Burgess Pearson, died today, Dec. 27, 2001, at 35 Lakeside Drive.
Born Oct. 14, 1929, in Sumter County, he was a son of the late Winfield Pearson and Carrie Sinkler Pearson.
The family will receive friends at the home, 1350 Genis Road, Dalzell.
Services will be announced by Williams Funeral Home Inc. of Sumter.

WILLIE ROACH JR.
Willie Roach Jr., widower of Rosanna English Roach, died Wednesday, Dec. 26, 2001, at Tuomey Regional Medical Center.
Born Nov. 10, 1924, in Sumter County, he was a son of the late Willie Roach and Matilda Prileau Roach.
The family will receive friends at the home, 2055 Trigger Lane.
Services will be announced by Williams Funeral Home Inc. of Sumter.

HENRIETTA WASHINGTON
Henrietta Washington, widow of Woodrow Washington, died Wednesday, Dec. 26, 2001, at Hopewell HealthCare Center.
She was born Aug. 15, 1917, in Sumter County.
The family will receive friends at the home of her son, James Witherspoon, 1875 N. St. Paul Church Road.
Services will be announced by Williams Funeral Home Inc. of Sumter.

ELLEN D. AMERSON
Ellen Lucille Denson Amerson, 61, wife of 42 years to James B. Amerson, died Tuesday, Dec. 25, 2001, at Palmetto Richland Memorial Hospital in Columbia.
Born in Rockingham, N.C., she was a daughter of the late Charlie Vance and Estelle Grooms Denson. She was a member of First Church of God on Wise Drive in Sumter. She was formerly employed by American Bingo. For many years, she delivered homemade cookies and cakes to personnel at Shaw Air Force Base on Thanksgiving, Christmas and New Year’s. She organized a toy drive this Christmas for the children at Shaw whose parents were deployed. She also raised two of her grandchildren, Steven and Erica.
Survivors besides her husband of Sumter include two sons, James T. Amerson and his wife, Jennifer, of Dalzell, and James A. Amerson of Sumter; a daughter, Tammie Y. Benenhaley and her husband, Dean, of Sumter; two brothers, Carthell “Buddy” Powell of Mary Esther, Fla., and James Charles “J.C.” Denson of Hamlet, N.C.; four grandchildren, Steven Joseph Guzman, Erica Leigh Amerson, Nicholas A. Amerson and Lane Thomas Amerson.
She was preceded in death by a brother, Dewey Powell; and two sisters, Edith Fitchett and Billie Jean Denson.
Funeral services will be held at 4 p.m. Friday at the First Church of God on Wise Drive with the Rev. Ron Bower officiating. Burial will be in Evergreen Memorial Park cemetery.
Tommy Arrington, Jimmy Arrington, Carl Powell, Mark Burkett, Steve Sanderson and Donnie Stegall will serve as pallbearers.
The family will receive friends from 6 to 8 p.m. today at the funeral home and other times at the home on Valleybrook Court.
Memorials may be made to the First Church of God, 318 N. Wise Drive, Sumter, SC 29150.
Bullock Funeral Home of Sumter is in charge of arrangements.

NOAH J. ARTRIP
Noah Jerry Artrip, 44, husband of Kia Artrip, died Tuesday, Dec. 25, 2001, in Haliewa, Hawaii.
Born in Sumter, he was a son of Margaret B. Artrip and the late Noah D. Artrip, formerly of Pulaski, Va., and Charlotte, N.C.
Survivors besides his wife of Haliewa and his mother of Sumter include two daughters, Jerin Artrip Hawthorne and Coral Artrip, both of Sumter; three sisters, Sherry Ippolito of Naples, N.Y., Liz McIntyre and Nancy Hilpish, both of Sumter; and three nephews, Brian, Joseph and David.
No local services are planned at this time.
Bullock Funeral Home of Sumter is in charge of arrangements.

JULIA M. BLANTON
MYRTLE BEACH — Julia M. Blanton, 51, of S.C. 814, died Tuesday, Dec. 25, 2001, at Grand Strand Regional Medical Center, following an illness.
Born Jan. 2, 1950, in Manning, she was a daughter of the late Ernest and Mary McRoy.
Survivors include her adopted father, Carl Rabon of Charleston; her former husband, Ken Blanton of Conway; three sons, Kevin Blanton and his wife, Tamara, Mark Blanton and Tobie Blanton, all of Myrtle Beach; four brothers, Carl McRoy, Jimmy McRoy, John McRoy and Danny Watson; two sisters, Retta Disher and Dottie Carter; and four grandchildren, Brandon Blanton, Dillon Blanton, Bryson Messer and Keaton Messer, all of Myrtle Beach.
She was preceded in death by her adopted mother, Vivian Watson Rabon.
Memorial services will be held at 2 p.m. Friday at Grand Strand Funeral Home and Crematory.

LILLIAN COOPER
COLUMBIA — Lillian Cooper of 4221 Shorecrest Drive, wife of Leo Cooper, died Saturday, Dec. 22, 2001.
Born in Macon, Ga., she was a daughter of the late Bertha Gordon. She was a member of Bibleway Church of Atlas Road.
Survivors besides her husband include a son, Leo Cooper Jr.; two daughters, Frankie Robinson and Leisha Cooper; and three grandchildren.
Funeral services will be held at 2 p.m. Friday at Bibleway Church of Atlas Road. Burial will be in Greenlawn Memorial Gardens.
Leevy’s Funeral Home, Taylor Street chapel, is in charge of arrangements.

EUDELL L. EVANS
PINEWOOD — Eudell Little Evans, 72, widow of Tommy Wesley Evans, died Tuesday, Dec. 25, 2001, at her home.
Born in Ash, N.C., she was a daughter of the late Kelly Little and Ada Little. She was a member of New Life Missionary Baptist Church in Ash.
Survivors include three sons, Brooky M. Evans and his wife, Lannette, of Sumter, S.K. Evans and his wife, Julie, and Brent Evans and his wife, Angie, all of Pinewood; two daughters, Rose Evans and Deloris Richardson and her husband, Jimmy, of Pinewood; three sisters, Carlean Zurcher of Rocky Point, N.C., and Ophelia Russ and Annette Pruitt, both of Ash; and 15 grandchildren.
She was preceded in death by two brothers, Arthur Little and Edgar Little; and two sisters, Gladie Little and Joyce Simmons.
Funeral services will be held at 1 p.m. Friday in the chapel of Elmore-Hill-McCreight Funeral Home with the Rev. Bennie Barwick officiating. Burial will be at 4 p.m. in Myrtle Head Cemetery in Ash.
Grandsons will serve as pallbearers.
The family will receive friends from 6 to 8 p.m. today at the funeral home and other times at the home of her daughter, 337 Reynolds Road, Pinewood.
Memorials may be made to the American Cancer Society, 128 Stonemark Lane, Columbia, SC 29210.

JAMES E. GRANT JR.
VIRGINIA BEACH, Va. — Retired Master Sgt. James E. Grant Jr., husband of Barbara Ann Robinson Grant, died Friday, Dec. 21, 2001, at 1057 Honey Cut Way, Virginia Beach.
Born Feb. 1, 1956, in Sumter County, he was a son of the late James Grant Sr. and Evelyn Dawson Grant. He attended Sumter County public schools and was a 1974 graduate of Hillcrest High School. In his youth, he joined High Hill Baptist Church. Upon moving to Virginia Beach, he was under watch care to Mt. Carmel Baptist Church, where he served on the Men Usher Board, worked with the men’s fellowship and was an active member of the youth department. He entered the U.S. Air Force on Jan. 22, 1975, and served 23 years. He served in Charleston, Panama, Guam, Norfolk, Va., and Louisiana. He worked in the field of aerospace maintenance. He received a number of awards and metals for his outstanding service.
Survivors besides his wife include two daughters, Shay Jolonda and Shkia Jumea Grant, both of Virginia Beach; two godsons, Vincent J. Berkeley and Dijon Wilson; four goddaughters, Montia W. Robinson, Ta’Niss J. Robinson, Deyona Wilson and Shakita China; four brothers, Willie L. Grant of Bridgeport, Conn., Paul Sinkler III, Cedric E. Grant and Kelvin L. Grant, all of Detroit, Mich.; and four sisters, Joyce D. Kinsley, Louise Montgomery, Felicia L. Grant, all of Detroit, and Bridgette N. Amos of Sumter.
Funeral services will be held at 1 p.m. Friday at High Hill Baptist Church, 6750 Meeting House Road, Dalzell, with the Rev. Ellie W. Palmer Sr., pastor, officiating. Burial will be in the church cemetery.
The funeral procession will leave at 12:30 p.m. from the home of his mother-in-law, Adeline S. Robinson, 1755 N. Kings Hwy.
The family will receive friends at the home of Adeline S. Robinson.

GEORGE B. HOBSON
BELLEVILLE, Ill. — George B. Hobson, 74, husband of Joan Hobson, died Tuesday, Dec. 25, 2001, at Christian Hospital NE in Florissant, Mo.
Born Feb. 21, 1927, in North Carolina, he was a son of the late Neal A. and Martha Hobson. He attended the First United Presbyterian Church in Belleville. He was a former member of the Masonic Lodge in Oklahoma and Moose Lodge in Belleville. He was a member of the Enlisted Club of Scott Air Force Base. He was a retired senior master sergeant with the U.S. Air Force.
Survivors besides his wife of Belleville include a son, the Rev. G. Thomas Hobson of Pinckneyville, Ill.; a daughter, Linda Susan Hobson of Stockton, Calif.; a brother, David Purvis of Sumter, S.C.; three sisters, Ruth Douglas and Jeanette Newsome, both of Sumter, and Joyce Brown of Atlanta, Ga.; and two grandchildren.
He was preceded in death by two brothers and two sisters.
Funeral services will be held at 10 a.m. Friday at First United Presbyterian Church in Belleville with the Rev. Drew Kramer officiating. Burial will be in Jefferson Barracks National Cemetery in St. Louis, Mo.
The family will receive friends from 8:30 to 10 a.m. Friday at the church.
Memorials may be made to the Salvation Army.

DAWSON B. KOLB
MONCKS CORNER — Dawson Bowen Kolb, 84, of Charleston, a former employee with the Charleston County Substance Abuse Commission, died Sunday, Dec. 23, 2001, in a Charleston hospital.
Born March 14, 1917, in Pinewood, he was a son of Clifford B. Kolb and Camilla Geddings Kolb. He was a graduate of Sumter High School. He was a member of New Covenant Baptist Church in Mt. Pleasant. He was a member of the American Legion. He served in the Army in World War II in Battery C 178th Field Artillery, the first battalion division. He served 630 days of combat in the invasion of North Africa, Sicily and Italy.
Survivors include his wife, Doris Earls Smith Kolb; a son, Charles Timothy Smith of Johnson City, Tenn.; three daughters, Margaret Smith Villanueva of Moncks Corner, and Cheryl Smith Graves and Karen Smith Mann, both of New Smyrna Beach, Fla.; nine grandchildren; 16 great-grandchildren; and a number of nieces and nephews.
Graveside services were held at 11 a.m. today at Evergreen Memorial Park in Sumter.

JARED M. REYNOLDS
BISHOPVILLE — Jared Manly Reynolds, 85, husband of Ruby Kelley Reynolds, died Wednesday, Dec. 26, 2001, at a local nursing center.
Born in Lee County, he was a son of the late Raymond A. Reynolds and Susie Smith Reynolds. He was a retired grocer and a U.S. Navy World War II veteran. He was a former member of the VFW.
Survivors besides his wife of 65 years of Bishopville include a son, R.A. Reynolds and his wife, Bea, of Sumter; two daughters, Mary Sue Parham and her husband, Joe, of Columbia and Elizabeth Reynolds of Bishopville; a brother, Vernon Reynolds of Bishopville; a sister, Clarissa Hasty of Bishopville; three granddaughters, Kelley P. Yarbrough, Leigh R. Newman and Helen P. Costenbader; a grandson, Ashley Reynolds; and three great-grandchildren.
Graveside services will be held at 2 p.m. Friday at High Hill True Light Church of Christ Cemetery with the Rev. Russell McLeod officiating.
The family will receive friends from 6 to 8 p.m. today at the funeral home and other times at the home of his daughter, Elizabeth Reynolds, 208 Davis St., Bishopville.
Memorials may be made to the Bishopville Rescue Squad, P.O. Box 487, Bishopville, SC 29010.

TOMMIE SINGLETARY
Tommie Singletary, 75, died Sunday, Dec. 23, 2001, at Hopewell HealthCare Center.
Born Oct. 27, 1926, in Lynchburg, he was a son of the late Tommie and Dinah Robinson Singletary. He attended Mayesville public schools. He moved to Baltimore, Md., where he was employed for more than 30 years with a building company. He later returned to Mayesville to take care of his mother. He was a member of Galilee Baptist Church.
Survivors include three brothers, Mitchell Singletary, Nero Singletary and Matthew Singletary, all of Baltimore; seven sisters, Lula Mae Grant, Azalee Spears, Louise McCray, Carrie Bell Jackson and Daisy Mae Pack, all of Baltimore, Elizabeth Smith of Detroit, Mich., and Ruby Jean Peterson of New York, N.Y.; and a number of nieces and nephews.
Funeral services will be held at 1 p.m. Friday at Galilee Baptist Church in Mayesville with the Rev. Eugene Myers, pastor, officiating. Burial will be in Mayesville Cemetery.
The casket will be placed in the church at noon Friday.
The family will receive friends at the home, 3070 Mt. Sinai Road, Lynchburg.
