Retired Lt. Col. Harry White Trimble, age 83, husband of 60 years to Maybeth Carithers Trimble, died Saturday, Dec. 22, 2001, at Tuomey Regional Medical Center. Another member of the greatest generation quietly slipped away peacefully in his sleep.
Born in Athens, Ga., he was a son of the late Col. Richard B. and Anna Coates Benedict Trimble. He was a member of the Church of the Holy Cross in Stateburg. He attended the University of Georgia. He graduated from USMA at West Point in 1941 and became a pilot in the U.S. Army Air Corps. He was a Recce pilot in World War II and Korea and served on the 2nd Air Division staff in Vietnam. He was a test pilot at Wright Field, Ohio, in 1943, and later was a system project officer and pilot at the Air Force Flight Test and Development Center, Edwards AFB, Calif. He commanded flying squadrons in Germany and Korea and was acting director of Concepts, Tactical Air Reconnaissance Center, 9th AF. He retired at Shaw AFB in 1968, where he started a wedding photography business, PHOTOCCASIONS, and provided aerial photography for industrial sites throughout South Carolina. His decorations include the Distinguished Flying Cross, Soldier’s Medal, Bronze Star with Valor and seven Air Medals.
To his family, friends and those who knew him, he leaves a cherished memory of tenderness, courage and integrity. To the world, he leaves a monumental photographic record of World War II and Korea as seen through the lenses of his cameras. He is loved and missed very much.
Survivors besides his wife of Sumter include two sons, Richard T. Trimble and his wife, Leslie, of Chama, N.M., and Retired Lt. Col. Jack R. Trimble and his wife, Rachel, of Memphis, Tenn.; a daughter, Jean E. Bried and her husband, Michael, of Orcas Island, Wash.; and four grandchildren, Norman Scott Trimble, Jennifer Trimble, Eric Trimble and Brittany Trimble.
He was preceded in death by a sister, Coates Olsen.
Graveside services will be held at 11 a.m. Saturday at the Church of the Holy Cross cemetery with the Rev. Richard B. Archer officiating.
The family will receive friends from 6 to 8 p.m. Friday at the funeral home.

Harold Otis Williams, 84, husband of Nell Owens Williams, died Wednesday, Dec. 26, 2001, at Tuomey Regional Medical Center.
Born in Fairview, N.C., he was a son of the late Fermor W. Williams and Belle Jones Williams. He was a member of Grace Baptist Church. He was a retired U.S. Air Force chief warrant officer with 30 years of service. He was a World War II veteran.
Survivors besides his wife of Sumter include a son, Ronald O. Williams of Columbia; two daughters, Anne Grumbles of Bainbridge, Ga., and Terrie W. Gainey of Sumter; two grandchildren; and five great-grandchildren.
Funeral services will be held at 3 p.m. Friday in the chapel of Elmore-Hill-McCreight Funeral Home with the Rev. Dr. James Chandler and the Rev. Dr. Thomas Painter officiating. Burial will be in Sumter Cemetery with full military honors.

Ethel Durden Turbeville Anderson, 88, widow of James Lensen Anderson, died Thursday, Dec. 27, 2001, at Covenant Place.
Born in Turbeville, she was a daughter of the late Daniel Eugene Turbeville Sr. and Ethel Durden Turbeville. She was an active member of Covenant Presbyterian Church in Columbia, where she served as former president of the Women of the Presbytery. She was a 1934 graduate of Winthrop College and a retired elementary teacher from Satchel Ford Elementary School. She was a member of the Daughters of the American Revolution, the United Daughters of the Confederacy, Delta Kappa Gamma and was a former president of the Columbia Federal Teachers Credit Union.
Survivors include two brothers, Daniel E. Turbeville Jr. of Sumter and Clemence D. Turbeville of Columbia; five sisters, Nell Turbeville, Joanna T. Keels, Sylvia T. Moseley, Marjorie T. Thrasher and Celeste T. Rivers, all of Sumter; and a number of nieces and nephews.
Funeral services will be held at 2 p.m. Saturday in the chapel of Elmore-Hill-McCreight Funeral Home with her nieces, the Rev. Dr. J. Kay Keels and the Rev. Diane A. Moseley, officiating. Burial will be in the Evergreen Memorial Park cemetery.
Her nephews, Porter Rivers III, Mark Moseley, Key Thrasher, Mike Thrasher, David Thrasher and Will Harmon will serve as pallbearers.

Moses “Big Moses” Ballard Sr., 76, widower of Easter Montgomery Ballard, died Monday, Dec. 24, 2001, at his home.
Born May 7, 1925, in Sumter County, he was a son of the late Dewey T. and Lucille Robinson Ballard. He attended Sumter County public schools in the Privateer community. He was baptized at Beulah UME Church. He later joined LaGree AME Church, where he was an active member of the steward and trustee boards until his illness.
Survivors include four sons, Leroy Ballard Sr., Dewey T. Ballard, Moses Ballard Jr. and Herbert Ballard, all of Sumter; five daughters, Mildred B. Balls, Mosetta B. Brooks, Wanda B. Smith and Caroline B. Witherspoon, all of Sumter, and Brenda B. Thames of Compton, Calif.; a sister, Mary B. Ragin of Sumter; an adopted brother, Emmanuel Benjamin of Sumter; an adopted sister, Adell Simmons of Sumter; 29 grandchildren; seven great-grandchildren; two godchildren; and a number of nieces and nephews.
He was preceded in death by a brother, Sammy Ballard; a granddaughter, Christina Smith; and a son-in-law, Leon Witherspoon.
Funeral services will be held at 2:30 p.m. Saturday at LaGree AME Church on Kolb Road with the Rev. Henry Williams, pastor, officiating, assisted by the Rev. Dr. James Blassingame, Bishop Q.B. Conyers and the Rev. Abraham Temoney. Burial will be in Haynesworth Cemetery.
The casket will be placed in the church at 1:30 p.m. Saturday.

DALZELL — Sara Roberta Clawson, 59, wife of 38 years to James D. Clawson, died Tuesday, Dec. 25, 2001, at Walter Reed Army Hospital in Washington, D.C.
Born in Emanuel County, Ga., she was a daughter of the late Luther Thomas and Clarence Amanda Way Layton. She was a member of Our Lady of the Skies Parish at Shaw Air Force Base and St. Joseph’s Parish in Columbia. She was a civil service employee for 35 years and was currently employed by the 20th LSS Squadron of Shaw AFB. She was a member of Beta Sigma Phi for more than 30 years, Laureate Pi Chapter.
Survivors besides her husband of Dalzell include two sons, James D. Clawson Jr. and Thomas M. Clawson and his wife, Tracy, all of Columbia; a daughter, Alicia K. Clawson and her husband, Earl C. Scoggins Jr., of Columbia; a brother, Gerald Layton of Gordon, Ga.; two sisters, Sammie Renaud of Cairo, Ga., and Peggy Willner of Bloomingham, Ill.; and three grandchildren, Sara Katherine Scoggins, Caroline Elizabeth Scoggins and Ian Michael Clawson.
She was preceded in death by a brother, Kent Layton; and a sister, Patsy Green.

Survivors include her adopted father, Carl Rabon of Charleston; her former husband, Ken Blanton of Conway; three sons, Kevin Blanton and his wife, Tamara, Mark Blanton and Tobie Blanton, all of Myrtle Beach; four brothers, Carl McRoy, Jimmy McRoy, John McRoy and Danny Watson; two sisters, Retta Disher and Dottie Carter; and four grandchildren, Brandon Blanton, Dillon Blanton, Bryson Messer and Keaton Messer, all of Myrtle Beach.
She was preceded in death by her adopted mother, Vivian Watson Rabon.

Born Aug. 5, 1940, in Sumter County, he was a son of Emma Jane Robinson Epps and the late Paul Epps Sr. He attended Sumter County public schools.
Survivors besides his wife and mother include two sons, Wardell Epps and Alfonzia Epps, both of Sumter; two stepsons, Ernest Gamble of Turbeville and Michael Fullwood of Lynchburg; a daughter, Roberta Epps of Lamar; a brother, Paul Epps Jr. of Lynchburg; a foster brother, Levern Epps of Bishopville; a sister, Annie Mae Epps-Isaac of Lynchburg; a stepsister, Isabell McKnight of Baltimore, Md.; eight grandchildren; and a number of aunts, uncles, nieces and nephews.
He was preceded in death by two sons and a sister, Jannie M. Epps-Fulton.
Funeral services will be held at noon Saturday at Asbury United Methodist Church in Lynchburg with the Rev. James R. Cannion, pastor, officiating. Burial will be in Goodman Cemetery.
