Elijah “Chief” Pearson, 78, husband of Ellen Cabbagestalk Pearson, died Saturday, Dec. 29, 2001, at Tuomey Regional Medical Center.
Born Sept. 28, 1923, in Philadelphia, Pa., he was a son of the late Winfield Pearson and Carrie Sinkler Pearson. In his youth, he joined Ebenezer Presbyterian Church (USA), where he was a dedicated member. He was employed at Georgia Pacific and Sharp Construction Co.
Survivors besides his wife include two sons, Elijah “Mack” Cabbagestalk and Alpha Cabbagestalk, both of Sumter; eight daughters, Eliza, Emma, Rebecca, Mary Ellen Cabbagestalk, Jacquelyn Russ, Monica Pearson and Juanita Campbell, all of Sumter, and Omega Randolph of Griffin, Ga.; two brothers, Marion Pearson of Sumter and Nathaniel Pearson of Hillside, N.J.; four sisters, Viola P. Cameron of Newark, N.J., Lillian P. Brunson of East Orange, N.J., Louise Lowery of Hillside and Susie P. McClendon of Miami, Fla.; two aunts, Louise S. Muldrow of Darlington and Elsie Harvin of Sumter; and nine grandchildren.
Funeral services will be held at noon Wednesday at Ebenezer Presbyterian Church (USA), Ebenezer Church Road, Dalzell, with the Rev. Ernest Jackson, presiding, assisted by the Rev. Frank E. Williams Sr., the Rev. Cedric Randolph, the Rev. W.S. Randolph and the Rev. Timothy A. Johnson. Burial will be in the church cemetery.
The funeral procession will leave at 11:30 a.m. from the home, 4115 Westbury Mill Road.

WILHELMENIA W. ROSE
Wilhelmenia Washington Rose, 96, widow of Wigfall “New” Rose Sr., died Friday, Dec. 28, 2001, at NHC Healthcare of Sumter.
Born May 19, 1905, in Sumter, she was a daughter of the late Nathan and Suzanna Nelson Washington. She attended Sumter County public schools. She was a longtime member of New Bethel Missionary Baptist Church, a member of the Missionary Circle and the Hastie Bible Class.
Survivors include four sons, Abraham Rose, John Rose, Junior Rose and Herbert Rose; two daughters, Alice Bracey and Susie Lee Bracey; two sisters, Ejester Davis and Sally W. Washington; three nephews she raised as her own sons, Thomas Washington, James Washington and Willis Washington; 28 grandchildren; 86 great-grandchildren; and 22 great-great-grandchildren.
She was preceded in death by a daughter, Cora Lee Farmer; and a number of brothers and sisters.
Funeral services will be held at 2 p.m. Tuesday at New Bethel Missionary Baptist Church with the Rev. Willie A. Wright Jr. officiating, assisted by Minister John Johnson, the Rev. J.C. Moore, the Rev. Marvin Hodge and the Rev. Dr. Kenny Rose. Burial will be in Bradford Cemetery.
The casket will be placed in the church at 1 p.m. Tuesday until the hour of service.
Grandsons will serve as pallbearers.
Granddaughters and members of the Missionary Circle III will serve as flower bearers.

ST. GEORGE — Freddie Hilton, 83, widower of Laurie Williams Hilton, died Sunday, Dec. 30, 2001, at Lake Marion Nursing Facility in Summerton. Born April 3, 1918, in Clarendon County, he was a son of the late Eddie Asbury Hilton and Lillian Walker Hilton.
The family will receive friends at the home of his sister and brother-in-law, Rosa Lee and Charles Britt, at 116 Woodbridge Road in St. George.

Henry Boone “Bill” Bradham, 74, died Saturday, Dec. 29, 2001, at Tuomey Regional Medical Center.
Born in Sumter, he was a son of the late Rich Cary Bradham Sr. and Alice Belva Sessions Bradham. He was self-employed.
Survivors include an adopted son, Billy Lee Roman and his wife, Melissa; an adopted daughter, Helen Roman Dowling and her husband, Gary; a brother-in-law, C. Alfred Tucker of Sumter; a sister-in-law, Annie C. Bradham of Sumter; and a number of nieces and nephews.
He was preceded in death by two brothers, Rich C. Bradham Jr. and Frank Charles Bradham; and three sisters, Miriam deLoache, Sue Tucker and Abbie “Dollie” Harvin.
Graveside services will be held at 11 a.m. Wednesday at Sumter Cemetery with the Rev. Robert F. Nance Jr. and the Rev. C.N. Howard officiating. The family will receive friends at the graveside following the service.

NEW ZION — Wilbur Clifton Epps Sr., 77, husband of Mildred Helen Craig Epps, died Sunday, Dec. 30, 2001, at Palmetto Richland Memorial Hospital in Columbia.
Born Feb. 6, 1924, in New Zion, he was a son of the late John J. and Italene Tomlinson Epps. He retired June 30, 1990, as a U.S. marshal. He was a former Clarendon County sheriff’s deputy, State Law Enforcement Division agent, Mason, Shriner, member of the Summerton Lion’s Club, past member and elder of Summerton Presbyterian Church and a member of Midway Presbyterian Church.
Survivors besides his wife, include a son, Wilbur Clifton “Cliff” Epps Jr. of New Zion; two daughters and sons-in-law, Debbie and John Geary of Columbia and Aggie and Hugh Monroe of Dalzell; two sisters, Vivian Towns and Elizabeth Barbery, both of Summerville; and three grandchildren, Malcolm Monroe, Hunter Epps and Cameron Epps.

SANTEE — Donald L. “Don” Kennedy Sr., 63, died Saturday, Dec. 29, 2001, in Santee.
Born July 9, 1938, in Wareagle, W.Va., he was a son of the late Keenan and Violet Compton Kennedy. He was a self-employed salesman, a U.S. Army veteran, and was of the Baptist faith.
Survivors include a son, Donald L. Kennedy Jr. of Santee; a daughter, Angela Mullins of Santee; a number of brothers and sisters; and six grandchildren. He was preceded in death by a son, Keenan Edward Kennedy.

HARTSVILLE — William “Blackie” McMillian, 63, husband of Elder Veronica Gayle Carter McMillian, died Friday, Dec. 28, 2001, at Carolina Pines Regional Medical Center.
Born May 29, 1938, in Lee County, he was a son of the late Clarence McMillian and Beulah Richardson McMillian. He attended Lee County public schools. He moved to Brooklyn, N.Y., in 1958. On Dec. 9, 1959, he married Veronica Gayle Carter of Waycross, Ga. He was employed by Purofied Down Products Inc. in Ridgefield, N.J., as a supervisor for 31 years. He retired and moved back to Lee County in January 1991.
Survivors besides his wife include four sons, William McMillian of Brooklyn, James, Joseph and Benjamin McMillian of Bishopville; a daughter, Algerine Romero of the home; two brothers, Johnny McMillian of Sumter and Roosevelt McMillian of Bishopville; five sisters, Mary Boone of Newark, N.J., Oleen Gallishaw and Irene Melton, both of Sumter, Lula Mae Dixon and Ida Oliver of Dalzell; eight grandchildren; and a great-grandson. SAUTEE, Ga. — Charles Roger Secrist, 65, husband of Emilie Beattie Hildebrand Secrist, died Sunday, Dec. 30, 2001, at Northeast Georgia Medical Center following a sudden illness.
A native of Wheeling, W.Va., he was a son of the late Charles Edgar and Lillian Marie Secrist. He was a U.S. Army veteran and a graduate of West Liberty State College. He had completed post graduate work at Syracuse University. He was a sales manager for Swan Rubber in Bucyrus, Ohio, and a national sales manager for Rubbermaid in Wooster, Ohio, and LaGrange, Ga. He was a vice president of sales and marketing for Eclin Corp. in Fort Lauderdale, Fla. Prior to his retirement, he was a vice president of sales and marketing for Allied Plastics Inc. in Gastonia, N.C.
Survivors besides his wife, include a son, Thomas Michael Secrist; two daughters, Nicole Secrist Whitmire and McCall Secrist Hoyle; three grandchildren, Benjamin Cooper Whitmire, Jackson Kyle Whitmire and Emilie Beattie Hoyle; and an aunt, Evelyn Bodeman Hand.
Memorial services will be held at 2 p.m. Wednesday at Grace Episcopal Church with the Rev. John Jenkins officiating.

Charles Edward “Binnie” Williams, 53, died Saturday, Dec. 29, 2001, at Doctor’s Hospital in Augusta, Ga.
Born Nov. 12, 1948, in Sumter County, he was a son of Pearl Davis Lewis and John P. Lewis Sr. and a grandson of the late Lou Purdy and Hezekiah Davis. He attended the public schools of Sumter County. He was married to the former Ida Mae Brown.
Survivors besides his parents include a daughter, Selena Williams of Sumter; three brothers, Frank Davis of Fort Worth, Texas, John P. Lewis Jr. of Sumter, and Marvin A. Lewis of Charlotte, N.C.; six sisters, Brenda Jean Tanner of Alcolu, Sammie Loretta Washington, Corlis A. Lewis and Stacie A. Stevenson, all of Sumter, Mary Jane Finch of Fayetteville, N.C., and Tamala J. Robinson of Spartanburg; and a host of aunts, uncles, nieces, nephews and other relatives and friends.
