VIRGINIA L. BASS
WINTHROP, Mass. — Virginia Lorayne Bass, 56, died Tuesday, Jan. 1, 2002, in Manning.
Born Aug. 9, 1945, in Florence, S.C., she was a daughter of the late David Harris Bass and Mary Kathleen Haseldon Bass. She was a member of Calvary Baptist Church in Florence. She was a retired nurse and was a manager of Ocean Spray Inn in Winthrop.
Survivors include her dear friends, Dr. and Mrs. Ray and Phyllis Langston of Manning, S.C., Jennifer Wright and her husband, Jerry, of Lancaster, S.C., Jay Langston of Clemson, S.C., Allen Langston of Annapolis, Md., Sara Jane Wessinger of Winthrop, Don and Elena Bartlett of Winthrop and Dr. and Mrs. A.R. Smythe of Columbia, S.C.
Funeral services will be held at 2 p.m. Saturday at Manning First Baptist Church with the Rev. Danny R. Bridges officiating. Burial will be in Mt. Hope Cemetery in Florence.
The family will receive friends at the home of Dr. and Mrs. Ray Langston, 1053 Country Club Circle, Manning.
Memorials may be made to the Lottie Moon Christmas Offering, Manning First Baptist Church, 49 W. Boyce St., Manning, SC 29102.

FREDDIE HILTON
MANNING — Freddie Hilton, 83, widower of Laurie Williams Hilton, died Sunday, Dec. 30, 2001, at Lake Marion Nursing Facility of Summerton.
Born April 3, 1918, in the Jordan section of Clarendon County, he was a son of the late Eddie Asbury Hilton and Lillian Walker Hilton. In his youth, he joined Society AME Church and later joined Union Cypress AME Church, where he served faithfully until his health failed. He was a retired farmer and a former employee of Dr. W.R. King Fertilizer Co. of Manning.
Survivors include a son, Reared Robert Daes of Manning; a sister, Rosa Lee Britt and her husband, Charles Henry Britt, of St. George; and two grandchildren.
He was preceded in death by four sisters and six brothers.
Funeral services will be held at noon Saturday at Union Cypress AME Church in the Jordan community of Manning with the Rev. Melissa Green officiating. Burial will be in Junky Yard Cemetery in the Foreston community of Manning.
The family will receive friends at the home of his sister and brother-in-law, Rosa Lee Britt and Charles Henry Britt, 116 Woodbridge Road, St. George.
Samuels Funeral Home of Manning is in charge of arrangements.

DR. GAMEWELL A. LEMMON
COLLEGE STATION, TEXAS — Dr. Gamewell A. “Gus” Lemmon, 79, of Hilton Head, widower of Dolores Lemmon, died Tuesday, Jan. 1, 2002, in College Station.
He was born Aug. 26, 1922, in Sumter, S.C. He was a graduate of The University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill and Jefferson Medical College in Philadelphia. Most of his medical training was done at the Philadelphia General Hospital. He was a Fellow of the American College of Surgeons and a diplomat of the American Board of Surgery. He practiced surgery in Birmingham, Ala., for a number of years until he retired. He then moved to Sea Pines. He belonged to Vestavia Country Club in Birmingham and Sea Pines Country Club. He was a marshal at the MCI Heritage Tournament and was a volunteer and medical adviser to Hospice of the Low Country. He enjoyed golf, bridge and painting.
Survivors include two daughters, Susan Portis of College Station and Ann Lemmon of Atlanta, Ga.; and three granddaughters.
The family will receive friends at 4 p.m. Tuesday at TidePointe.
Memorials may be made to Hospice Care of the Low Country, 20 Palmetto Parkway No. 104, Hilton Head, SC 29926.

ROBERT L. MATTHEWS
PINEWOOD — Robert Lee “Rabbit” Matthews, 69, husband of Mildred Morton Matthews, died Thursday, Dec. 27, 2001, at the home of his brother and sister-in-law.
Born April 15, 1932, in Newberry, he was a son of the late Kelly Matthews Sr. and Lois Ray Matthews. He lived in Bennettsville during his youth. He attended the public schools of the Blenheim school system. In his youth, he joined Spring Hill Baptist Church in Blenheim. After moving to High Point, N.C., he was employed as a roofer with Alvin Roofing Co. until his retirement.
Survivors besides his wife include a daughter, Linda Diane Matthews of High Point; three brothers, Nathaniel Matthews of High Point, Kelly Matthews Jr. of the home and the Rev. Johnus Matthews of the home; a sister, Elizabeth Stubbs of Philadelphia, Pa.; eight grandchildren; and two great-grandchildren.
He was preceded in death by a son, Robert Lee Matthews Jr.
Funeral services will be held at 12:30 p.m. Saturday at Living Water Baptist Church in High Point with the Rev. Javatis Johnson, pastor, officiating, assisted by the Revs. Katheleen Brown, Ulysess Welch and Evangelist Louise Welch. Burial will be in Guilford Memorial Park in Jamestown, N.C.
The family will receive friends at the home of his brother and sister-in-law, the Rev. Johnus and Mary Bosier Matthews, 2769 Frank Rhames Road, Silver community, Pinewood.

DOROTHY B. MOON
Dorothy Blanding Moon, 69, widow of Charles Moon, died Tuesday, Jan. 1, 2002, at Tuomey Regional Medical Center.
Born Nov. 1, 1932, in Sumter County, she was a daughter of the late Rebecca Blanding and Richard Butler. She attended Sumter County public schools. In her youth, she joined Mt. Olive AME Church in Woodrow, where she was a faithful member of the church school, Stewardess Board No. 2, women’s missionary society, Sumter unit missionary society, willing worker’s club and the busy bee organization.
Survivors include two daughters, Juanita Weston and Thelma Dickerson, both of Sumter; four brothers, Richard Blanding and Elijah Blanding, both of Sumter, Murray Blanding of Washington, D.C., and Charles Butler of Rahway, N.J.; four sisters, Mammie Matthews of Melverne, N.Y., Martha Wilson, Rovena Brunson and Dorothy Morant, all of New Jersey; an adopted daughter, Lucy McClary of Sumter; six grandchildren; and 11 great-grandchildren.
She was preceded in death by a brother, Lucious Blanding; a sister, Rebecca Blanding; a sister-in-law, Rebecca Johnson Blanding; and an aunt, Katie Tatlor.
Funeral services will be held at 2 p.m. Saturday at Mt. Olive AME Church, S.C. 441, Woodrow, with the Rev. Timothy A. Johnson, pastor, officiating, assisted by the Rev. Frank E. Williams Sr., the Rev. Roberta Wilson, the Rev. Henry J. Murray and the Rev. Ernest Jackson. Burial will be in Hillside Memorial Park.
The casket will be placed in the church at 1 p.m. Saturday.
Nephews will serve as pallbearers with members of the Women’s Missionary Society and Stewardess Board No. 2 serving as flower bearers.
The funeral procession will leave at 1:30 p.m. from the home, 7 Mickens St.
The family will receive friends at the home.

MARSHALL T. RAGIN
WHITE PLAINS, N.Y. — Marshall Tyrone Ragin, 30, died Tuesday, Dec. 25, 2001, at his home in White Plains.
Born May 27, 1971, in Port Chester, N.Y., he was a son of Runnett Green and Fred Ragin. He was a graduate of Mt. Vernon High School in Mt. Vernon, N.Y. He attended Denmark Technical College in Denmark, S.C. He attended Calvary Baptist Church in White Plains.
Survivors besides his mother of Summerton, S.C., and his father of New York, N.Y. include two brothers, Johnny Green of Gaithersburg, Md., and Marvin Ragin of Ft. Lauderdale, Fla.
Funeral services will be held at 2 p.m. Saturday in the chapel of Summerton Funeral Service, 23 S. Duke St., Summerton, with the Rev. Dr. William T. Johnson officiating. Burial will be in Taw Caw Missionary Baptist Church cemetery in Summerton.
The funeral procession will leave at 1:45 p.m. Saturday from the home of his mother and aunt, Emma Furman, 1039 Oliver St., Summerton.
The family will receive friends at the home of his mother and aunt.

WILLIE M. SPANN SR.
COLUMBIA — Willie “Gyp” Moses Spann Sr., widower of Edith Wright Spann, died Monday, Dec. 31, 2001, at Providence Hospital Northeast.
Born Sept. 2, 1928, in Clarendon County, he was a son of the late George Spann Sr. and Malvenia Smalls Spann. He attended Clarendon County public schools. He was a member of New Bethel Missionary Baptist Church. He was a veteran of the U.S. Army.
Survivors besides his wife include five sons, Willie Spann Jr. of Myrtle Beach, Willie Huggins of Boston, Mass., Ernest Huggins of Dorchester, Mass., Willie Mood Major and Roger Gamble, both of Manning; nine daughters, Bernice Spann Dennis of Rembert, Polly Spann Kershaw of Nashville, Tenn., Deloris Spann Purnell of Sumter, Margaret Spann James of Yorktown, Va., Sandra Spann McKnight of Columbia, Clara Mae Huggins, Johnnie Mae Huggins, Mary Huggins and Patricia Huggins Wooten; four brothers, Johnnie Spann and Harold Spann, both of Pinewood, Ellison Spann of Pinewood and George Spann of Brooklyn, N.Y.; two sisters, Pauline Billups of Sumter and Thelma Holland of Pinewood; and 25 grandchildren.
He was preceded in death by a brother, Elliott Spann; and four sisters, Camilla Conyers, Inell Spann, Mary Robinson and Irene Conyers.
Funeral services will be held at 2 p.m. Saturday at New Bethel Missionary Baptist with the Rev. Willie L. Wright and Minister Gary Conyers officiating. Burial will be in Bradford Cemetery.
The casket will be placed in the church at 1 p.m. Saturday.
Abraham King, J.C. Amos, Richard Johnson, James Amos and Eugene Hastie will serve as pallbearers.
The funeral procession will leave at 1:15 p.m. from the home of Deloris Purnell, 936 W. Liberty St.
The family will receive friends at the home of Deloris Purnell.

SUSIE W. THAMES
Susie Weatherly Thames, 84, widow of Miles S. Thames, died Wednesday, Jan. 2, 2002, at Tuomey Regional Medical Center.
Born in Sumter, she was a daughter of the late Erasmus A. Weatherly and Susie Gray Weatherly. She was a member of Grace Baptist Church and was retired from Pioneer Dress Co.
Survivors include two sons, Miles S. Thames and his wife, Susie, of Hartsville, and Julius Thames and his wife, Vickie, of Sumter; a daughter, Deloris Thames McCoy and her husband, Elvin, of Sumter; two sisters, Vivian Brannon of Amanda Park, Wash., and Carlette Bartlette of Sumter; eight grandchildren; and a number of great-grandchildren.
She was preceded in death by a brother, Walter Weatherly; a sister, Ruby Floyd; a son, Walter Thames; and a grandson, Jay Thames.
Graveside services will be held at 11 a.m. Saturday at Evergreen Memorial Park cemetery with the Rev. Jim Tuggle officiating.
The family will receive friends from 6 to 8 p.m. today at the funeral home and other times at the home, 18 Burkett Drive.

DOROTHY M. WELLS
FLORENCE — Dorothy M. Wells, 74, widow of George Wells Sr., died Monday, Dec. 31, 2001, at Carolinas Hospital System.
Born May 19, 1927, in Lee County, she was a daughter of the late Annie Bell Gamble Lisbon and Zill Lisbon Sr. She attended Lee County public schools. In her youth, she joined St. Paul United Methodist Church in Elliott.
Survivors include four sons, George Wells Jr. and Charlie L. Wells, both of the home, James E. Wells and Nathaniel Wells, both of Elliott; a stepson, George Williams of St. Charles; seven daughters, Georgia Reames of St. Charles, Ora B. Wilson and Evelyn Harriott, both of Elliott, Estelle Oliver of Brooklyn, N.Y., Annie L. Moses and Josephine Washington, both of Sumter, and Doreatha Wells of the home; four brothers, Bobby C. Wells of Elliott, Zill Lisbon Jr. and John Lisbon, both of Florida, and Ernest Lisbon of Lamar; four sisters, Emma Primes of Lynchburg, Mary B. Luckey of Elliott, Virginia Williams of Lamar and Hattie M. Boone of Mayesville; 28 grandchildren; and 26 great-grandchildren.
She was preceded in death by two children, two grandchildren, one sister and two brothers.
Funeral services will be held at 1 p.m. Saturday at St. Paul United Methodist Church in Elliott with the Rev. John Sellers officiating. Burial will be in St. Paul — Wisacky Cemetery in Wisacky.
The casket will be placed in the church at noon Saturday.
United Methodist Men will serve as pallbearers with United Methodist Women serving as flower bearers.
The funeral procession will leave at 12:30 p.m. Saturday from the home of her daughter, Doreatha Wells, 246 Casual Branch Road, Elliott.
The family will receive friends at the home of Doreatha Wells.

CAMDEN — Hermann Josef Koening, 63, husband of Elisabeth Schulte Koening, died Thursday, Jan. 3, 2002, at his home.

Lonnie Burgess, 75, husband of Lease Witherspoon Burgess, died Wednesday, Jan. 2, 2002, at Tuomey Regional Medical Center.
Born Nov. 19, 1926, in Sumter County, he was a son of the late Thomas and Avie Burgess. He attended Sumter County public schools.
Survivors besides his wife include three sons, Eddie Burgess of Wedgefield, Johnny Thomas Burgess and Joe Louis Burgess, both of Olanta; four daughters, Avary Mae McCloud, Gail Jackson and Janie Jackson, all of Sumter and Druscilla Robinson of Olanta; three brothers, Thomas Burgess of Turbeville, James Thomas Burgess of Olanta and Romey Burgess of Sumter; seven sisters, Shirley King, Lillie Vaughn and Odell McDowell, all of New York, N.Y., Ruby Mae Pearson, Shelby Carter, Emma Prince and Maria Martin, all of Sumter; 30 grandchildren; 31 great-grandchildren; and a number of nieces, nephews, other relatives and friends.
Funeral services will be held at 12 noon today at Heritage Chapel Church, 710 Manning Ave., with the Rev. Dr. H.B. Shaw officiating. Burial will be in Haynesworth Cemetery.
The casket will be placed in the church at 11 a.m. today.
The family will receive friends at the home of his granddaughter, Tina Jackson, 40 Birnie Circle. Job’s Mortuary Inc. of Sumter is in charge of arrangements.
