Joseph Phillip Ward Jr., 47, died Monday, Jan. 7, 2002, at the Medical University of South Carolina hospital in Charleston.
Born in Sumter, he was a son of Lily Pritchard Ward and the late Joseph Phillip Ward Sr. He was a U.S. Army Vietnam veteran.
Survivors besides his mother include two sons, Barry Ward and Phillip Davis of Sumter; a brother, Ronnie Ward of Sumter; a sister, Linda Ridgeway of Sumter; and three grandchildren.
He was preceded in death by a son, Brian Ward.
Funeral services were held at 11 a.m. today in the chapel of Elmore-Hill-McCreight Funeral Home. The Rev. Rodney Howard officiated. Burial was in Sumter Cemetery.
Ronnie Ward, Ken Avin, Kevin Avin, Michael Osteen, Clinton Roberts and Terry Anderson served as pallbearers.

Myrtle Inez Lee Bennett, 72, wife of Carroll W. Bennett, died Wednesday, Jan. 9, 2002, at her home.
Born in O’Brien, Fla., she was a daughter of the late Glen Lee and Mary Tucker Lee. She was a member of Marcus Methodist Church in Jackson Springs, N.C.

Born Feb. 26, 1940, in Clarendon County, S.C., she was a daughter of Willie Mae Woods Mickens and the late Forreston Gibbons. She attended Clarendon County and District of Columbia public schools. She was a member of Thankful Baptist Church in Washington, D.C., for more than 20 years, where she served on the Choraliers Choir, the flower club, kitchen committee and pastor’s aide club. Survivors include two sons, Raymond Keels of Bladensburg, Md., and Marvin Gibbons of Washington, D.C.; a daughter, Kathy Keels of Washington, D.C.; five brothers, Clifton Gibbons of Walker Mill, Md., Forreston Gibbons of Hyattsville, Md., Micah Mustafa of Sumter, Jerome Gibbons of Alexandria, Va., and Melvin Gibbons of Washington, D.C.; three sisters, Harrolee Gibbons of Irving, Texas, Rhonda Gibbons and Patricia Pierce, both of Washington, D.C.; two grandchildren; a great-grandchild; a number of nieces, nephews and other relatives.

SUMMERTON — Charles Frederick Hill Jr., 91, husband of Catherine Anderson Hill, died Thursday, Jan. 10, 2002, at his home in Summerton.
Born May 23, 1910, in Delair, N.J., he was a son of the late Charles Frederick Hill Sr. and Helene Nugent Hill. He was of the Methodist faith. He was owner and operator of Hill Brothers Trucking in Merchantville, N.J., was amateur trap shooting champion in New Jersey and was a Mason.
Survivors besides his wife of Summerton include a daughter, Kimberly Jones of Clemmenton, Va.; a nephew; and a niece.
A private family service will be held at a later date in New Jersey.

Azalee McCray, 51, widow of Murray McCray, died Monday, Jan. 7, 2002, at Tuomey Regional Medical Center.
Born Feb. 9, 1950, in Sumter County, she was a daughter of the late Harvey Wilson and Emma McFadden Wilson. She attended Sumter County public schools.
Survivors include four sons, Edward McFadden, Danny McCray, Richard McCray and Jarvis McCray, all of Sumter; three brothers, Harvey McFadden of Newark, N.J., and Thomas McFadden and Oliver Wilson, both of Sumter; two sisters, Mary Sue Sanders and Anthanett Wilson, both of Sumter; 12 grandchildren; and two great-grandchildren.
She was preceded in death by a son, Randolph McCray.
Funeral services will be held at noon Saturday at New Covenant Presbyterian Church (USA), 907 Legare St., with the Rev. Retha M. Nelson, pastor, officiating, assisted by Elder Thelma Miner. Burial will be in the church cemetery.

Eugene “Pipe” or “Gino” Shaw, 31, husband of Dorothy Green Shaw, died Sunday, Jan. 6, 2002.
Born March 9, 1970, in Sumter, he was a son of Katie Mae Balls Shaw Clark and the late Willie Shaw Jr. He was a stepson of Frank Clark. He attended Sumter public schools and was a 1989 graduate of Sumter High School. He was a member of Trinity Baptist Church and also attended Clinton Chapel Church. He was employed by Carolina Golden Products.
Survivors besides his wife, mother and stepfather include a daughter, Shaquette Lakie Green of Sumter; a brother, Willie Shaw III of Sumter; two sisters, Barbara Shaw Jenkins and Janice Brunson, both of Sumter; grandparents, Jane Shaw Johnson, Leon Ball and Willie Baker, all of Sumter; three stepbrothers; four stepsisters; an uncle; a number of aunts, nieces, nephews and other relatives.
He was preceded in death by a daughter, Laquette Shaw, a grandmother and mother-in-law.

Born March 27, 1989, in Sumter, he was a son of Bruce and Pamela Bracey. He attended Willow Drive Elementary and Pal Academy. He enjoyed playing basketball and singing rap songs.
Survivors besides his parents include three brothers, Elon Smalls, Hallie Smalls and Latique Bracey, all of Sumter; a sister, Kimberly Smalls of Sumter; grandparents, Almeta Muldrow and David Muldrow Jr. of Sumter; great-grandparents, Ada Gregg of Mayesville, Marie Smalls, Verlease Muldrow and David Muldrow, all of Sumter; and a number of other relatives.

Born Feb. 6, 1910, he was a son of the late Wilson and Ella Wallace. He was a member of Macedonia Baptist Church. Prior to his retirement, he was a farmer and worked in the construction industry.
Survivors include four sons, Spencer Wallace and R.W. Wallace of Troy, N.Y., Joe Louis Wallace of Manning and John Wallace of St. Stephen; four daughters, Rochell Felder of Troy, Ethel Dingle, Annie Bell Ross and Mary Ellen York, all of Manning; a sister, Annie Harrison of Sumter; 23 grandchildren; 41 great-grandchildren; and 10 great-great-grandchildren.
