THOMASVILLE, N.C. — Samuel Lee Brunson Sr., 78, widower of Elease Canty Brunson, died Saturday, Jan. 26, 2002, at Libertywood Nursing Home.
Born in Sumter County, S.C., he was a son of the late Pickney and Cammie Dallis Brunson. Prior to moving to Thomasville in 1999, he was a faithful member of Calvary Baptist Church in Pinewood, S.C., where he served as a trustee. He was employed with Georgia Pacific Co. for more than 25 years.
Survivors include three sons, Robert Brunson of Manning, S.C., Samuel L. Brunson Jr. of Pinewood and Ervin Brunson of Thomasville; six daughters, Delores Scott, Henrietta Timan, Ellen Brunson, Maggie Spann and Mary Brunson, all of Thomasville, and Almeta Brunson of Charlotte; and a brother, Pinckey Brunson Jr. of Pinewood, S.C.
Funeral services will be held at 2 p.m. Thursday at Calvary Baptist Church in Pinewood with the Rev. E. Sanders, pastor, officiating. Burial will be in the church cemetery.
The casket will be placed in the church at 1 p.m. Thursday.
The funeral procession will leave at 1:15 p.m. Thursday from the home of his son, Robert Brunson, Route 3, Box 946-B, Jordan community, Manning.
The family will receive friends at the home of Robert Brunson.

FLORENCE — Gertrude Worrell Watts Howard, 88, died Tuesday, Jan. 29, 2002, at a local nursing facility, after an illness.
Born in Florence County, she was a daughter of the late Robert Charles and Mary Elizabeth Isgett Worrell. She was a homemaker. She was a member of Immanuel Baptist Church.
Survivors include two sons, J.B. Watts of Greenville and David L. Watts of Florence; two daughters, Betty Stoupenos and Deloris Ivey, both of Florence; a stepdaughter, Dorothy Kraft of Hilton Head Island; a special sister-in-law, Otlee Worrell of Florence; a nephew, Luther W. Worrell of Florence; a niece, Connie Morrow of Florence; nine grandchildren; and nine great-grandchildren. She was preceded in death by her first husband, Julius Benson Watts; her second husband, Rushton L. Howard; a son, Robert C. Watts; a daughter, Sara Linna Watts; a grandson, Andrew Stoupenos; and three stepsons, Thomas M. Watts, Stone Warren Watts and Wallace Stone Watts.
Graveside services will be held at 2 p.m. Thursday at Mount Hope Cemetery. The family will receive friends from 6 to 8 p.m. today at the funeral home. Waters-Powell Funeral Home of Florence is in charge of arrangements.

Clare Alexander McCullough, 97, widower of Florence Kent McCullough, died Monday, Jan. 28, 2002, at Tuomey Regional Medical Center.
Born in Lonsdale, Ontario, Canada, he was a son of the late William Mitchell and Emma Ethel Dewitt McCullough. He was a retired lab technician with 40 years of service at Thomas Edison and was a member of the Episcopal Church of the Holy Comforter.
Survivors include two daughters, Patricia Hier and her husband, Donald, of Mendham, N.J., and Judith McCullough of Sumter; a sister, Letitia Grange of Napanee, Ontario, Canada; seven grandchildren; and 12 great-grandchildren.
Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m. Thursday at Episcopal Church of the Holy Comforter with the Rev. Mark Riggs officiating. Burial will be in Sumter Cemetery.
A reception will be held at 10 a.m. prior to the service.

MANNING — Willie Troy Miller Sr., 82, husband of Margie Dixon Miller, died Saturday, Jan. 26, 2002, at Palmetto Baptist Medical Center in Columbia.
Born Jan. 12, 1920, in the Camp Bob Cooper section of Clarendon County, he was a son of the late Temple Miller Sr. and Vinnie Mack Miller. He attended Rosenwald School at Mount Zion and was a graduate of South Carolina State College in masonry. He was a member of Mount Zion AME Church, where he served on the senior choir, men’s chorus, gospel train choir, trustee board and steward board. He was a member of the Carter-Sullivan American Legion Post No. 204, Manning. He was an original founder of “The Gospel Four Quartet.” He served in the U.S. Army in World War II and was honorably discharged.
Survivors besides his wife of the home include three sons, Lee Ernest Miller of Bronx, N.Y., Thomas Miller of Columbus, Ohio and Edward Miller of Marietta, Ga.; an adopted son, Sammie L. Lesane of Manning; three daughters, Willie Mae Williams and Frances Ann Walker, both of Manning, and Ellen Gray of Fayetteville, N.C.; an adopted daughter, Denise Nelson of Alcolu; seven brothers, the Rev. Sam Miller of Sumter, Aquila Miller of Denmark, Abraham Miller of Columbia, Temple Miller Jr., Shebhart Miller and Arnett Miller, all of Newport News, Va., and the Rev. Jonah Miller of Newark, N.J.; five sisters, Vinnie Graham of Newport News, Julia Simpson of Wilmington, N.C., Queen E. Young of Manning, Ernestine Jenkins of Charleston and Nettie White of Honolulu, Hawaii; 23 grandchildren; and 18 great-grandchildren.
He was preceded in death by a son, Willie Troy Miller Jr. Funeral services will be held at 2 p.m. Thursday at Mount Zion AME Church, Camp Bob Cooper section of Summerton with the Rev. Manuel Fogel, pastor, officiating, assisted by the Rev. Sam Miller, the Rev. O’Donald Dingle, the Rev. Arnette Miller and the Rev. Jonah Miller. Burial will be in the church cemetery. The casket will be placed in the church at 1 p.m. Thursday.
Grandsons will serve as pallbearers.
Ladies of Mount Zion AME Church and ladies of Lewis Chapel Baptist Church of Fayetteville will serve as flower bearers. The family will receive friends at the home, 201 Dyson St., Manning.

Viola Lorraine Durant Ragin, 52, wife of Thomas Ragin, died Sunday, Jan. 27, 2002, at Tuomey Regional Medical Center.
Born Feb. 18, 1949, in Pinewood, she was a daughter of Camilla Durant Holland and the late James Shannon. She attended Sumter County public schools and was a 1968 graduate of Manchester High School. She was a 1978 graduate of Morris College and received her master’s degree in 1985 from the University of South Carolina. In her youth, she was a member of Calvary Baptist Church in Pinewood. After her marriage, she joined Union Station AME Church, where she served on stewardess board number one, Love and Unity Club and the F.J. Gadson Inspirational Choir. She was employed by Sumter School District 17, where she taught pre-kindergarten and kindergarten at Willow Drive Elementary. She was listed as Who’s Who among teachers and students and was a member of Zeta Phi Beta Sorority Inc.
Survivors besides her husband and mother include a son, Kenneth Ragin of Sumter; a daughter, Kimdra Ragin-Belser of Sumter; two sisters, Phillis Holland of Wilmington, N.C., and Laguardia Holland of Brooklyn, N.Y.; two uncles, Thomas Durant of Paterson, N.J., and Leslie Durant of Wilmington; five grandchildren; a number of brothers-in-law, sisters-in-law, nieces and nephews.
Funeral services will be held at 3 p.m. Thursday at Union Station AME Church with the Rev. Friendly J. Gadson, pastor, officiating. Burial will be in Hillside Memorial Park. PHILADELPHIA, Pa. — Dorothy Rivers Ragins died Friday, Jan. 25, 2002, in Philadelphia.
Born Feb. 3, 1923, in the Spring Grove community of Rimini, she was a daughter of the late Lawrence B. Rivers Sr. and Daisy James Rivers. She attended Clarendon County and Sumter County public schools. She was a 1942 graduate of Lincoln High School in Sumter. In her youth, she joined New Hope AME Church, where she was active with the Sunday school and sang in the church choir. She attended Allen University.
Survivors include three sons, Ansley Bernard Ragins Sr. of Rimini, Alfonsa Reynard Ragin of Silver Spring, Md., and Rodney Morris Ragin of Philadelphia; a daughter, Cherly Diane Ragin of Philadelphia; a brother, Lawrence B. Rivers Jr. of Capital Heights, Md.; and a sister, Parneist R. Glover of Seaside, Calif.
Wake services will be held from 7 to 8 p.m. today at Community Funeral Home.
