HOWARD W. GREGORY SR.
SUMMERTON — Howard Woodrow Gregory Sr., 87, widower of Celestine Nelson Gregory, died Tuesday, July 31, 2001, at his home. Born Jan. 27, 1914, in Boydton, Va., he was a son of the late Thomas and Nanny Lee Newton Gregory. He attended Macklinburg County, Va., public schools. He joined Clinton Memorial AME Church and, after moving to Summerton, joined Liberty Hill AME Church, where he served on the Senior Steward Board. He was honorably discharged from the U.S. Army. He retired from Joe’s Restaurant as co-owner. Survivors include a son, Howard W. Gregory Jr.; a sister, Dorothy Jones of Newark, N.J.; five grandchildren, Kim, Andre, Gerard, Brandon and Eric Gregory; and a great-grandchild. Funeral services will be held at 3 p.m. Saturday at Liberty Hill AME Church in Summerton with the Rev. M. Duncan, pastor, officiating, assisted by the Rev. Walt Phillips. Burial will be in the church cemetery. The family will receive friends at the home, 8483 Alex Harvin Road, Summerton. Samuels Funeral Home of Manning is in charge of arrangements.

CHARLES D. HOLTON JR.
COLUMBIA — Retired Lt. Col. Charles D. Holton Jr., 83, husband of Margaret Powell-Holton, died Thursday, Aug. 2, 2001. Born in Washington County, N.C., he was a son of the late Charles D. and Maude Ambrose Holton. He graduated from Sumter Boys High School and was a member of the football team. He also attended the University of South Carolina. He was a retired U.S. Army veteran of World War II, Korean and Vietnam Wars. He was a life member of the Retired Officers’ Association, The Summit Club, The Fort Jackson Golf Club and The Capital Senior Center. He was first married to the late Genie Moore Holton and then to Margaret Powell-Holton. Survivors besides his wife include a son, John D. Powell III and his wife, Jo, of Leavenworth, Kan.; two sisters, Marjorie Clarke of Sumter and Esther Holton of Greenville; grandchildren, Ashley Powell and her mother, Novelene Powell, Michael John Powell and Leigh Anne Gaffney and their mother, Ruth Powell, all of Columbia; and a number of nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by two sisters, Evelyn Jennings and Dorothy Crowl. Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m. Saturday at Trenholm Road United Methodist Church. Burial will be in Greenlawn Memorial Park with military rites. Members of the Medlock Sunday School Class will serve as honorary pallbearers. The family will receive friends from 6 to 8 p.m. today at Dunbar Funeral Home, Devine Street chapel. Memorials may be made to Trenholm Road United Methodist Church Building Fund, 3401 Trenholm Road, Columbia, SC 29204 or to a charity of one’s choice. Dunbar Funeral Home of Columbia is in charge of arrangements.

SAM W. YOUNG JR.
Sam Willard Young Jr. died Tuesday, July 31, 2001, at Tuomey Regional Medical Center. Born July 11, 1941, in Sumter, he was a son of the late Sam Young Sr. and Catherine Cain Young. He attended Sumter County public schools. He attended St. Matthews Baptist Church. As a young man, he moved to Brooklyn, N.Y., where he met and married Helen Harper. He was employed in several different occupations, including carpentry and printing. He was employed as a truck driver for more than 40 years for various agencies including Casone Paper Co. Survivors include three sons, Sam Jeffrey of Brooklyn, Larry Donell of New Rochelle, N.Y., and William of Sommerville, N.J.; a daughter, Dominica of Upper Marlboro, Md.; a brother, David Young of Sumter; and four sisters, Ann Bradley of San Diego, Calif., Erma Linton of Hillside, N.J., Josephine Young of Roswell, Ga., and Ethel Johnson of Sumter. He was preceded in death by two brothers, Allen and Roy Young. Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m. Saturday in the John Wesley Williams Sr. Memorial Chapel of Williams Funeral Home Inc., 821 N. Main St., with Pastor Wesley Maple, Greater House of Prayer Church of Our Lord Jesus Christ, officiating. Burial will be in Hillside Memorial Park. The funeral procession will leave at 10:30 a.m. from the home of Lottie Spencer, 14 Hospital Circle. The family will receive friends at the home of his brother, David Young, 53 Murphy St., and at the home of Lottie Spencer. Williams Funeral Home Inc. of Sumter is in charge of arrangements.

LEROY COCKFIELD
LAKE CITY — Leroy Cockfield, 85, widower of Lola Bell Cockfield, died Thursday, Aug. 2, 2001, at Carolinas Hospital System in Florence. He was born June 30, 1916, in Florence County. The family will receive friends at the home of his daughter and son-in-law, Nettie Lee and James Croker, 133 Cash Ave., Lake City. Services will be announced by Green’s Funeral Home of Lake City.

FRANCES ALSTON
WEDGEFIELD — Frances Alston, 61, died Tuesday, July 31, 2001, at Tuomey Regional Medical Center. Born Oct. 21, 1939, in Sumter, she was a daughter of the late Julia Alston. She attended Sumter County public schools. She was a member of High Hills AME Church. Survivors include a son, Larry Chuck Alston of Wedgefield; a sister, Susan Coplin of Bridgeport, Conn.; eight grandchildren; four great-grandchildren; an aunt; two uncles; a godmother; and a number of nieces, nephews and cousins. Funeral services were held at 11 a.m. today at High Hills AME Church, 6780 Meeting House Road, Sumter, with the Rev. M. Charmaine Ragin officiating. Burial was in the churchyard cemetery. The funeral procession left from the home of her son, 10 Isaiah Drive (Cane Savannah Road), Wedgefield. The family will receive friends at the home of her son. Job’s Mortuary Inc. of Sumter is in charge of arrangements.

LINNETTE L. BROWN
FORT WALTON BEACH, Fla. — Linnette L. Brown, wife of William H. Brown, died Thursday, Aug. 2, 2001, at Fort Walton Beach Medical Center, Fort Walton Beach, Fla. Born Sept. 24, 1917, in Sumter, she was a daughter of the late Shepherd and Eva Tallon Lindler. During her husband’s service in the U.S. military, the family lived in Virginia, Japan, South Carolina, New Jersey, Hawaii and Florida. While in Japan, she served as a Grey Lady with the Red Cross, helping care for wounded soldiers and airmen returning from the Korean War. At Hickam AFB, Hawaii, she worked as a volunteer with pre-schoolers. After returning to the United States, she worked with helping disadvantaged children and also worked with the Operation Blue Bark program, opening her home to provide assistance to unaccompanied dependents proceeding to overseas assignments. Her husband’s final military assignment was to Eglin AFB and Hurlburt at Fort Walton Beach in 1967, where they have lived for the past 35 years. This year would have marked the Brown’s 65th wedding anniversary. Survivors besides her husband of Fort Walton Beach include her children, Robert L. Brown of Dalzell, S.C., and Billie Lynne Chappell of Marietta, Ga.; a sister, Betty Stockstad of Calif.; grandchildren, Robert L. Brown Jr. of Crystal River, Fla., Sharolynn L. Kucera of Bellevue, Neb., and Sunnie G. Chappell of Marietta; and great-grandchildren, Kimberly Brown, Shannon Kucera, Caitlyn Kucera, and Nathan Kucera. Memorial services will be held at 4 p.m. Sunday at Holy Trinity Lutheran Church, Fort Walton Beach. A private family burial will be held Wednesday at Beale Memorial Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, family and friends may contribute to the Holy Trinity Lutheran Church mortgage reduction fund, or a charity of their choice. McLaughlin Funeral Home of Fort Walton Beach is in charge of arrangements.

JOHN A. MOORE
MANNING — John Alton Moore, 62, husband of Vera Howle Moore, died Thursday, Aug. 2, 2001, at Clarendon Memorial Hospital in Manning. Born Feb. 24, 1939, in Latta, he was a son of the late Quincy and Lucy Clark Moore. He was a salesman, a U.S. Air Force veteran, and a member of Latta Baptist Church. Survivors besides his wife of Manning include three daughters, Renee Bodenheimer, Susan Moore and Brooke Matthews, all of Manning; a brother, Marvin Moore of Latta; two sisters, Marie Clark of Florence and Sybil Hammett of Columbia; and six grandchildren. Funeral services will be held at 1 p.m. today at Emmanuel Baptist Church in Manning with the Rev. Stephen Bowe officiating. Burial will be in Clarendon Memorial Gardens, Manning. Dr. Al Thornton, Tom Eanes, L.G. Mathis, Dickie Thompson, J.D. Duke and Winston Bennett will serve as pallbearers. Memorials may be made to Emmanuel Baptist Church, Manning, S.C. Stephens Funeral Home of Manning is in charge of arrangements.

MOZELLE I. PEAKS
Mozelle Isaac Peaks died Wednesday, July 25, 2001, at Mariner Health of Sumter East. Born April 22, 1924, in Lee County, she was a daughter of the late Herbert Isaac Sr. and Corean Weston Isaac. She attended Lee and Sumter County public schools and was a 1944 graduate of Lincoln High School. After graduation, she enrolled in Morris College. She was raised in the Mechanicsville United Methodist Church and was active until she moved to Youngstown, Ohio. In Youngstown, she was a member of the Elizabeth Missionary Baptist Church, where she sang on the senior choir, was vice president of the gospel choir, treasurer of the Benevolent Fund and was a member of the Jolly Ten Club. After returning to the Sumter community, she joined Mt. Zion United Methodist Church. She was a member of the NAACP. She was the first person of color to be employed as a salesperson with the W.T. Grant Dept. store in Youngstown. She later retired as a team supervisor in the industrial field. Survivors include a brother, Herbert Isaac Jr. of Denmark, S.C.; and two sisters, Frances Bryant and Dorothy Richards, both of Sumter. She was preceded in death by two brothers, James F. Isaac and Curtis Isaac. Funeral services were held at 2 p.m. Friday at Mt. Zion United Methodist Church with the Rev. Telley L. Gadson, pastor, officiating, assisted by the Rev. Herbert Fogle, the Rev. Eliza Black, and the Rev. Willie Dennis. Burial will be in Evergreen Memorial Park. The casket was placed in the church at 1 p.m. for viewing until the hour of service. The family will receive friends at the home of Dorothy and William Richards, 83 Hawks Cove, Sumter. Palmer Memorial Chapel Inc. of Sumter is in charge of arrangements.

LYNCHBURG — Johnnie Sabra Eargle Thomas, 71, wife of David A. Thomas Sr. died Friday, Aug. 3, 2001, at Tuomey Regional Medical Center. Services will be announced by Elmore-Hill-McCreight Funeral Home.

SHEILA RAE SUGG ALEXANDER
CONWAY — Sheila Rae Sugg Alexander, 45, wife of William Hillhouse Alexander, died Thursday, Aug. 2, 2001, at Conway Hospital. Born in Sumter, she was a daughter of George C. Sugg Jr. and the late Sarah Coker Sugg Walsh. She attended the College of Charleston and was employed by the Horry County School District as a teacher. Survivors include a son, William Barry Alexander of Ft. Knox, Ky.; a stepmother, Suzanne G. Sugg of Pawleys Island; six sisters, Pam Sugg Jennings of Atlanta, Margaret C. Sugg, Gina Sugg Johnson and Beth Sugg McNew, all of Myrtle Beach, Sheryl Sugg of Conway and Natalie Sugg Garrett of Easley; and a special family friend, Elizabeth Witherspoon Boulineau of North Myrtle Beach. A memorial service will be held 2 p.m. Sunday at Goldfinch Funeral Home, Conway Chapel, with the Rev. Jeff Dunn officiating. The family will receive friends from 1 to 2 p.m. Sunday at the funeral home. Memorials may be sent to the Horry County Animal Shelter, 1888 Highway 90, Conway, SC 29526. Goldfinch Funeral Home is in charge of the arrangements.

COROLLA NEELEY STUCKEY
BISHOPVILLE — Corolla Neeley Stuckey, 88, widow of Rufus Dixon “Dick” Stuckey, died Thursday, Aug. 2, 2001, at Covenant Place. Born in Anderson on March 6, 1913, she was a daughter of the late Rev. John William Neeley and Ella C. Moye Neeley. She was a pillar of Bethlehem United Methodist Church where she served as historian, Sunday school teacher, former president of the Women of the Church, and a member of Eva Woodham Circle. She was a 1934 graduate of Columbia College. After graduation, she taught English in the public schools for 34 years, having taught in Bishopville, Lydia, Hartsville and Ashwood-Central schools. She was an active member of the American Legion Auxiliary, the Lee County Historical Society, United Daughters of the Confederacy, the Bishopville Book Club, Xi Chapter of Delta Kappa Gamma, Lee County Education Association, retired; S.C. Education Association, retired; and the National Education Association, retired. In 1992, she co-authored a history of “Lee County: Lee County South Carolina - Past and Present.” She was a recipient of the Governor’s Order of the Palmetto and was also honored by the establishment of the Corolla Stuckey English Scholarship, which is given annually to the Lee County senior with the highest cumulative average in English. Survivors include her son and daughter-in-law, Rufus Dixon “Dick” Stuckey Jr. and Kay of Sumter; a daughter and son-in-law, Moye and David Harrison of Kaiserlautern, Germany; grandchildren, Edward L. “Ted” Grimball IV of Charleston and Suzanne E. Harrison of Germany; stepgrandchildren, Elizabeth Jeffers, Kathryn Bailey, Will Bradbury and Lee Bradbury; a stepgreat-grandson, Caleb Bailey; and several nieces and nephews. Funeral services will be held at 4 p.m. Sunday at Bethlehem United Methodist Church with the Rev. Kenneth Phelps officiating. Burial will be in the Bethlehem Methodist Cemetery. Pallbearers will be her nephews. Honorary pallbearers will be members of her Sunday School class and former students who are able to attend. The family will receive friends from 7 to 9 p.m. today at the Hancock-Elmore-Hill Funeral Home. Memorials may be made to the Corolla Stuckey English Scholarship Fund, c/o Grady Brown, 213 Main St., Bishopville, SC 29010. Hancock-Elmore-Hill Funeral Home is in charge of the arrangements.

LULA ROBINSON NEWMAN
Lula Robinson Newman, 105, died Friday, August 3, 2001, at her home. Born July 22, 1896, in Lee County, she was a daughter of the late Eddie and Martha Patterson. The family will receive friends at the home of her daughter, Mary Robinson Scriven, 328 Bowman Drive. Services will be announced by Scriven Funeral Home.

JOHNNIE SABRE EARGLE THOMAS
LYNCHBURG — Johnnie Sabre Eargle Thomas, 71, wife of David A Thomas Sr., died Friday, August 3, 2001, at Tuomey Regional Medical Center. Born in Atlanta, Ga., she was a daughter of the late John Eargle and Lena Singletary Eargle. She was a member of Trinity United Methodist Church in Lynchburg. Survivors other than her husband include a son, David A. Thomas Jr. and his wife Becky of Lynchburg; two daughters, Cindy Odom of Lynchburg and Pamelia Howe and her husband Ralph of Chesapeake, Va.; two brothers, Jack Eargle of Conway and Raymond Eargle of Sumter; two sisters, Patsy McElveen of Sumter and Betty Amerson of Santee; and six grandchildren, Monica, Chelsea and Trey Thomas, Sabre Odom, and Angela and Loren Howe. She was preceded in death by a sister, Frances Kolb. Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m. Monday in the chapel of Elmore-Hill-McCreight Funeral Home with the Rev. Jim Ridenhour officiating. Burial will be in Evergreen Memorial Park Cemetery. Pallbearers will be Loren Howe, William Floyd, Monte McLeod, Jeff Callen, Jay McElveen and David Eargle. The family will receive friends from 6 to 8 p.m. Sunday at Elmore-Hill-McCreight Funeral Home and other times at the home, 5690 Mt. Sinai Church Road in Lynchburg. MANNING — Frances B. “Fannie Bell” Broadway, 88, widow of James W. Broadway, died Friday, August 3, 2001, at National Healthcare in Sumter. Born Oct. 14, 1912, in Manning, she was a daughter of the late Marion T. Thames and the late Mary Elizabeth C. Thames. She was a lifelong member of Manning First Baptist Church, where she served as a Sunday school teacher for 51 years. Survivors include a son, J.W. “Billy” Broadway Jr. of Sumter; a daughter, Mary Beatrice Noll of San Antonio; a brother, Norwood E. Thames of San Antonio; a sister, Helen T. Jordan of Sumter; six grandchildren and eight great-grandchildren. Funeral services will be held at 3 p.m. Monday at Manning First Baptist Church with Dr. Paul Sullivan and Dr. David Anderson officiating. Burial will follow in Manning Cemetery. Pallbearers will be her son-in-law Cliff Noll, Hugh Thames, John Franklin Thames and her three grandsons, Richard Noll, Shawn Broadway and Shand Broadway. The family will receive friends from 4 to 6 p.m. Sunday at Stephens Funeral Home in Manning. In lieu of flowers, memorials can be made to Manning First Baptist Church Friendship House, 49 W. DORIS BATEMAN BELSER
SUMMERTON — Doris Bateman Belser, 75, widow of Thomas Harvey Belser, died Saturday, August 4, 2001, at Clarendon Memorial Hospital in Manning. Born March 17, 1926, in Summerton, she was a daughter of the late Roy Henry Bateman and Williene Mathis Bateman Elliott. She was a graduate of Winthrop College, where she was a member of Delta Kappa Gamma. She was a retired schoolteacher and a member of Summerton Baptist Church, where she served as treasurer for 30 years. She was honored by the church with Doris Belser Day. Survivors include two sons, Thomas Harvey Belser Jr. and Roy Edwin Belser, both of Summerton; a sister, Nancy Lynn “Lindy” Brunson of Summerton; and four grandchildren. Funeral services will be held at 10 a.m. Monday at Summerton Baptist Church with the Rev. Tom Mellette and the Rev. Rob Pierce officiating. Burial will follow at Summerton Evergreen Cemetery. Pallbearers will be Matt McCurry, Bob McCurry, Baker Bell, Cag Brunson, Shane Brunson and Charlie Allan. The family will receive friends from 6 to 9 p.m. Sunday evening at the residence, 8 N.
