Elizabeth Plowden Kennedy Davis, 93, widow of Johnnie Davis, died Sunday, Jan. 27, 2002, at McCoy Memorial Nursing Center in Bishopville.
Born Dec. 15, 1908, in the Brogdon community of Sumter County, she was a daughter of the late James and Bessie Stewart Plowden. In her youth, she was baptized at Mulberry Baptist Church. She later joined Jehovah Missionary Baptist Church. She was employed as a cook until her retirement.
Survivors include two sisters, Annie Mae Potts of Sumter and Wilhemina Todd of Utica, N.Y.; four stepchildren, Annie Davis, Helen Wilson and Robert Davis, all of Sumter, and Johnnie Mae Simmons of Bronx, N.Y.; a nephew; four nieces; and a number of great-nephews and great-nieces.
Funeral services will be held at 1 p.m. Friday at Heritage Chapel Church, 710 Manning Ave., with the Rev. Dr. Marion H. Newton, officiating. Burial will be in Mulberry Cemetery.
The casket will be placed in the church at noon Friday.
The family will receive friends at the home, 11 Monroe St.

Elsie Joann Keith, 65, widow of Ralph Keith Jr., died Monday, Jan. 28, 2002, at Tuomey Regional Medical Center.
Born in Altus, Okla., she was a daughter of the late Charles Robertson and Callie Bass Robertson. She was a former postmistress of the U.S. Post Office in Horatio.
Survivors include two sons, William Ralph Keith of Dalzell and Larry Duane Keith of Sumter; a daughter, Deborah Diane Dungy of San Antonio, Texas; three brothers, James Robertson of Pleasantville, Mo., and Charles Robertson and David Robertson, both of Mineral Wells, Texas; two sisters, Linda Doss of Oklahoma City, Okla., and Debra Vest of Mineral Wells; and seven grandchildren.
She was preceded in death by a son, Mabry Parker.
Graveside services will be held at 3 p.m. today at Evergreen Memorial Park cemetery with the Rev. Ellis Evans officiating.

Elizabeth “Betty” Karvelas Poulos, 80, wife of Chris Poulos, died Tuesday, Jan. 29, 2002, at a local nursing center.
Born in Paterson, N.J., she was a daughter of the late John Karvelas and Aphrodite Carcania Karvelas. She was a member of the Holy Trinity Greek Orthodox Church in Columbia. She was a retired cashier/hostess at Big Jim’s Restaurant.
Survivors besides her husband of Sumter include a son, the Rev. Michael J. Poulos of Atlanta, Ga.; a daughter, Eve Christine Stegner of Sumter; two brothers, James Karvelas and Michael Karvelas, both of Sumter; and two grandchildren, Nicholas Poulos and Sophia Poulos, both of Atlanta.
Graveside services will be held at 11 a.m. Friday in Sumter Cemetery with Father Aris Metrakos officiating.
The family will receive friends from 6 to 8 p.m. today at the funeral home with a prayer service beginning at 6:15 p.m. and other times at the home, 505 Mattison Ave.

Viola Lorraine Durant Ragin, 52, wife of Thomas Ragin, died Sunday, Jan. 27, 2002, at Tuomey Regional Medical Center.
Born Feb. 18, 1949, in Pinewood, she was a daughter of Camilla Durant Holland and the late James Shannon. She attended Sumter County public schools and was a 1968 graduate of Manchester High School. She was a 1978 graduate of Morris College and received her master’s degree in 1985 from the University of South Carolina. In her youth, she was a member of Calvary Baptist Church in Pinewood. After her marriage, she joined Union Station AME Church, where she served on stewardess board number one, Love and Unity Club and the F.J. Gadson Inspirational Choir. She was employed by Sumter School District 17, where she taught pre-kindergarten and kindergarten at Willow Drive Elementary. She was listed as Who’s Who among teachers and students and was a member of Zeta Phi Beta Sorority Inc.
Survivors besides her husband and mother include a son, Kenneth Ragin of Sumter; a daughter, Kimdra Ragin-Belser of Sumter; two sisters, Phillis Holland of Wilmington, N.C., and Laguardia Holland of Brooklyn, N.Y.; two uncles, Thomas Durant of Paterson, N.J., and Leslie Durant of Wilmington; five grandchildren; a number of brothers-in-law, sisters-in-law, nieces and nephews.
Funeral services will be held at 3 p.m. today at Union Station AME Church with the Rev. Friendly J. Gadson, pastor, officiating. Burial will be in Hillside Memorial Park.

PHILADELPHIA, Pa. — Dorothy Rivers Ragins died Friday, Jan. 25, 2002, in Philadelphia.
Born Feb. 3, 1923, in the Spring Grove community of Rimini, she was a daughter of the late Lawrence B. Rivers Sr. and Daisy James Rivers. She attended Clarendon County and Sumter County public schools. She was a 1942 graduate of Lincoln High School in Sumter. In her youth, she joined New Hope AME Church, where she was active with the Sunday school and sang in the church choir. She attended Allen University.
Survivors include three sons, Ansley Bernard Ragins Sr. of Rimini, Alfonsa Reynard Ragin of Silver Spring, Md., and Rodney Morris Ragin of Philadelphia; a daughter, Cherly Diane Ragin of Philadelphia; a brother, Lawrence B. Rivers Jr. of Capital Heights, Md.; and a sister, Parneist R. Glover of Seaside, Calif.
Funeral services will be held at 2 p.m. today at the chapel of Community Funeral Home with the Rev. Roosevelt Boyd officiating. Burial will be in Spring Grove Cemetery.
The casket will be placed in the church at 1 p.m. today.

SPARTANBURG — Hazel Isehower Winn, 84, of 118 Spring Valley Drive, Spartanburg, wife of Ralph Marshall Winn, died Wednesday, Jan. 30, 2002, at National Health Care Center in Mauldin after an extended illness.
Born in Charlotte, N.C., she was a daughter of the late Caleb Nelson and Minnie Lee Henderson Isehower. She attended the University of South Carolina, Columbia, and also the Business College of Charlotte. She was an active member of Morningside Baptist Church of Spartanburg, where she taught Sunday school for a number of years, was a member of the Loyalty Sunday School Class and women’s missionary society. She was also a volunteer with Mobile Meals. She was a supervisor, having worked in the accounting department of Southern Bell Telephone in Charlotte and Columbia.
Survivors besides her husband of 50 years of the home include two sons, R. Marshall Winn III and his wife, Jeanette Anderson Winn, of Greenville and Stephen H. Winn of Sumter; two grandchildren, Richard Marshall Winn and Eleanor Anderson Winn of Greenville; a brother, John N. Isehower of Charleston; and two sisters, Catherine Mott of North Charleston and Betty Sigmon of Charlotte.
Funeral services will be held at 2:30 p.m. Friday at Morningside Baptist Church with Dr. Kirk H. Neely officiating. Burial will be in Greenlawn Memorial Gardens.

Born Dec. 25, 1930, in the Sugar Hill section of Manning, he was a son of the late Essic and Estelle Johnson Dozier.

BEAUFORT — Donald Lee Anderson, 47, died Friday, Jan. 25, 2002, at Beaufort Memorial Hospital.
Born Aug. 4, 1954, in Ridgeland, he was a son of Queen E. Grady and the late I.D. Robinson. He was a stepson of the late Henry W. Spann Sr. He graduated from Sumter High School. He later joined the Marine Corps, where he was honorably discharged after three years of service.
Survivors besides his mother include a daughter, Regina Wright of Sumter; three brothers, Howard Spann, Allen Spann and Billy Spann, all of Sumter; four sisters, Gail Brown of Estill, Mildred Robinson of Coosawhatchie, Gwendolyn Drake of Richland and Marie Grady of Sumter; and two grandchildren.
He was preceded in death by a brother, Henry Spann Jr.; and a sister, Barbara Spann.

MONROE, N.C. — Ellen Walkup “Bennie” Brewer, 73, of Monroe, wife of Robert H. “Bud” Brewer, died Wednesday, Jan. 30, 2002, at Presbyterian Hospital in Charlotte.
Born March 16, 1928, in Union County, she was a daughter of the late Samuel Crawford and Ellen Eugene Wilson Walkup. She was a graduate of Jackson High School and Charlotte Beauty School. She was a member of Bethlehem United Methodist Church, where she was a member of Witness in Service Circle and Wesley Fellowship Sunday School Class. She was also a member of Woodmen of the World. She was a self-employed hairdresser and owner of Louise Beauty Salon.
Survivors besides her husband include two daughters, Sandra Lee Brewer of Sumter, S.C., and Sherry Lynn Council and her husband, Chip, of Charlotte; a brother, Dale Walkup of Waxhaw; a sister, Genevieve Courtney of Monroe; and three grandchildren, Robbie, Rebekah and Richard Council.

MANNING — Leroy Dean Claycomb, 65, husband of Kathy Pimley Claycomb, died Wednesday, Jan. 30, 2002.
Born in Pickering, Mo., he was a son of the late Edna Mae and James Loris Claycomb. He graduated from Iowa State University with a master’s degree in business and chemistry. He was a U.S. Army veteran and later retired as president and chief executive officer of New Hampshire Medical Laboratory. As an avid golfer and a lifetime member of the PGA, he was employed at the Wyboo Player’s Golf Course in Manning.
Survivors besides his wife include a daughter, Hope Rice of Weare, N.H.; two stepdaughters, Tammy Michael of Epson, N.H., and Heather Hebert of Manchester, N.H.; a stepson, Paul Lemay Jr. of Goffstown, N.H.; three grandchildren, Alex Rice, Monika Hebert and Maddison Hebert, all of New Hampshire; a devoted dog, Mickey; and a cat, Mr. Hogan.
He was preceded in death by two brothers, James and Jean Claycomb.
Memorial services will be held at 11 a.m. Saturday at Wyboo Plantation Community Center on Recreation Drive in Manning.
