Tamar Capers Davenport, 97, died Tuesday, Jan. 29, 2002, at Hopewell HealthCare Center.
Born Feb. 1, 1904, in Sumter County, she was a daughter of the late Maggie Capers and Grinison Colough. In her youth, she joined High Hills Baptist Church. She moved to Philadelphia, Pa., as a young adult and joined Monument Baptist Church in Philadelphia, where she served in various capacities. While residing in Philadelphia, she was the live-in caretaker for the children of Mr. and Mrs. Oliver Shepard. Upon retirement, she returned to Sumter and rejoined High Hills Baptist Church, where she was a member of the missionary ministry and teacher of the adult Sunday school class.
Survivors include a brother, Woodrow Capers of Sumter.
Funeral services will be held at noon Saturday at High Hills Baptist Church in Dalzell with the Rev. Ellie W. Palmer, pastor, officiating, assisted by Dr. James Blassingame, presiding, Minister Roosevelt Williams, the Rev. Willie Dennis and Dr. L.W. Walker Sr. Burial will be in the church cemetery.
The casket will be placed in the church at 11 a.m. Saturday.
Trustees of High Hills and Hopewell Baptist churches will serve as pallbearers.

GAYNELL H. GODWIN
MARION — This Wednesday night, Jan. 30, 2002, about 8 p.m., everything that was mortal of Mrs. Gaynell Easterbrook Hatfield Godwin ceased to be, and that snow white soul was transplanted from a life of physical disability to that heavenly mansion to live with God and the Angels in that life beyond the grave. The deceased was 97 years of age and had been a consistent member of the Methodist Church since her marriage at the age of 18 to her deceased husband, Lonnie Huron Godwin Sr. Her death was not any surprise, as she had been in failing health this past year, but she bore it all with patience and determination.
Born in Sumter, she was a daughter of the late Walter Digby Hatfield and Acklyn Safronie Troublefield Hatfield. She was a past worthy matron of Summerton Eastern Star, past president of American Legion Auxiliary, past owner of Godwin’s Hotel and Restaurant and served on the board of Clarendon Memorial Hospital. She was a former member of Summerton United Methodist Church and later of the First United Methodist of Marion.
Survivors include two daughters, Sarah LaRae Godwin of Columbia and Gaynell Godwin Dingle of Marion; a number of grandchildren, great-grandchildren and great-great-grandchildren.
She was preceded in death by two sons, Baby Godwin and Lonnie Huron Godwin Jr.; a daughter, Juanita Acklyn Godwin; four brothers, Walter Digby Hatfield Jr., Raymond Carl Hatfield, Cecil Kyle Hatfield and Larry Shiver Hatfield; and two sisters, Berniece Hatfield Pearson and Juanita Hatfield.
Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m. Saturday at First United Methodist Church.
Graveside services will be held at 3 p.m. at Evergreen Cemetery in Summerton.
The family will receive friends from 6 to 8 p.m. today at the funeral home.

Harrison Hood, 77, husband of Roberta “Bobby” Hood, died Thursday, Jan. 31, 2002, at Tuomey Regional Medical Center.
Born in Sumter, he was a son of the late Harry Hood and Nora Benenhaley Hood. He was a member of Long Branch Baptist Church and Eastover Hunting and Fishing Club. He was a retired civil engineer with Shaw Air Force Base Civil Service.
Survivors besides his wife of Sumter include a daughter, Dee Mincey, of Sumter; a brother, Norman Hood of Dalzell; two grandchildren; five nephews; and a niece.
Funeral services will be held at 4 p.m. Saturday at Long Branch Baptist Church with the Rev. Carroll Waddell officiating. Burial will be in the church cemetery.
Jamie Hood, Ronnie Benenhaley, Mike Conte, Harold Benenhaley, Stephen Sanderson and David Benenhaley will serve as pallbearers.

Eunice A. Hubbard, 100, widow of Elbert B. Hubbard, died Thursday, Jan. 31, 2002, at NHC Healthcare of Sumter.
Born Jan. 9, 1902, in Cameron, she was a daughter of the late Anna Elizabeth and Rufus L. Antley. She was a 1922 graduate of Winthrop College. She was a member of Grace Baptist Church, where she was active in the WMU and other areas of the church. She retired from the National Bank of South Carolina after a number of years of service in the bookkeeping department.
Survivors include two sons, Elbert B. Hubbard Jr. and his wife, Celeste, and Alan B. Hubbard and his wife, Becky, all of Sumter; a daughter, Lavinia “Lou” Shipley and her husband, William L. Shipley, of Moncks Corner; a brother, Woodrow Antley of San Bernardino, Calif.; a sister, Ila Dye of Moncks Corner; ten grandchildren; 13 great-grandchildren; and a number of nieces and nephews.
Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m. Saturday at Grace Baptist Church with Dr. James Chandler and Dr. Tom Painter officiating. Burial will be in Evergreen Cemetery.
Her grandsons, Al, Phil, Bert and Jack Hubbard, Bill, Bob and Brian Shipley and James Cammons will serve as pallbearers.

Charles L. Jones Jr., 87, husband of Peggy L. Gebhardt Jones, died Wednesday, Jan. 30, 2002, at a local nursing center.
Born in Dalzell, he was a son of the late Charles L. Jones Sr. and Clyde Weldon Jones. He was a retired U.S. Air Force master sergeant with more than 20 years of service and a World War II veteran. He retired from the Vitro Corp. of America after 19 years. He received a presidential citation for work he completed on the atomic bomb test. He was a mason for 57 years, serving in Alpha Lodge No. 172 in Ft. Walton Beach, Fla. He was a shriner and a member of the American Legion and VFW.
Survivors besides his wife of Sumter include a daughter, Patricia Lou Sherwin of Oxford, Ohio; five sisters, Annie Mae Smyre of Columbia, Frances Henry of Baltimore, Md., Lena Hill and Allene Compton, both of Sumter, and Hazel Terrar of Silver Springs, Md.; four granddaughters, Dianne Sherwin, Nancy Sherwin, Carol Elliott and Susan Sherwin, all of Oxford; and four great-grandchildren, Rachel, Megan, Mitch and Mallory.
Graveside services will be held at 2 p.m. Saturday at Sumter Cemetery with the Rev. Dr. Robert Stillwell officiating.

COLUMBIA — John Jack “Pedro” McCleary Jr., 54, died Thursday, Jan. 24, 2002, at Dorn Veterans Medical Center in Columbia.
Born Sept. 20, 1947, in Sumter, he was a son of the late John Jack McCleary Sr. and Mary E. Campbell McCleary. He attended Sumter County public schools. He served in the U.S. Army for four years.
Survivors include a daughter, Marva Denise McCray of Sumter; a granddaughter, Shernise McCray of Sumter; three brothers, Jimmy L. James of the home, Walter E. Campbell of Sacramento, Calif., and Thomas McKnight of Sumter; and two sisters, Jackie Hunt of the home and Beverly J. Rogers of Sumter.

CLINTON — Mark Pressley Medlock, 37, died Tuesday, Jan. 29, 2002, in Laurens.
Born in Aiken, he was a son of Gene Medlock and Nora Busbee Medlock and stepson of Jennie Medlock.
Survivors besides his father and stepmother of Clinton and his mother of Bath include two brothers, David Mobley Jr. of Sumter and John Mobley of Chicago; two sisters, Chairty Johnson of Clinton and Shannon L. Medlock of Anderson; his paternal grandmother, Kathleen Medlock of Edgefield; and maternal grandfather, Charles Coursey of Bath.
He was preceded in death by a sister, Jean Elaine Medlock.

Anna G. Poulson, 88, widow of Severn Poulson, died Wednesday, Jan. 30, 2002, at Mariner Health of Sumter East.
Born May 8, 1913, in Sumter County, she was a daughter of the late William Gadson Sr. and Rosa Deas Gadson. She attended Sumter County public schools. In her youth, she joined Wayman Chapel AME Church. She married Severn Poulson and moved to Jacksonville, Fla. While there, she joined Grant Memorial AME Church, where she remained for 28 years. When she returned to Sumter, she rejoined Wayman Chapel AME Church.
Survivors include two brothers, Melvin Gadson and William Gadson, both of Sumter; and two sisters, Millie Canty of Pinewood and Rosa Lee Jackson of Jacksonville.
Funeral services will be held at 11:30 a.m. Saturday at Wayman Chapel AME Church, S.C. 261 North, Sumter. Burial will be in the church cemetery.
The casket will be placed in the church at 10:30 a.m. Saturday. There will be no viewing after the services.
Nephews will serve as pallbearers with members of the women’s missionary society and stewardesses serving as flower bearers.

REV. RUTH H. SCOTT
ATLANTA, Ga. — The Rev. Ruth Jeanett Hawkins Scott, 56, widow of James Scott, died Monday, Jan. 28, 2002, at Westlywood Geriatric Hospital.
Born April 24, 1945, in Pinewood, she was a daughter of the late Rufus Hawkins and Gracie Gaymon Hawkins. She was raised in a Christian home and became a member of Antioch AME Church in her youth. She attended Sumter County public schools and graduated from Manchester High School. After graduation, she moved with her family to New York City, where she spent the majority of her adult life. She continued her education at the Brooklyn Adult Center, NYC Community College, Brooklyn College and Pace University. She received a degree in business education and elementary education and a master’s degree in education and reading.
She was a teacher for the New York City public school system and the New York state system for 15 years. She also taught as an adjunct professor at NYC Community College for two years. She later returned to South Carolina after 27 years, where she was an assistant professor at Morris College for nine years as a developmental reading teacher.
She was a member of the Holy Temple Church of God in Christ, the Glorious Church of God in Christ for 15 years. She later joined the House of the Lord Pentecostal Church, where she was a member for eight years until she returned to South Carolina. She joined the ministry in April of 1988. After returning to South Carolina in 1991, she rejoined the Antioch AME Church in Rimini and was licensed to preach by the Elder B.P. Boston. She was ordained as an itinerant elder in the Central Conference of the Seventh Episcopal District of the AME Church by Bishop John Hurst Adams in November 1966, where she received her first appointment to the Wagner Initiative for two years. She was then appointed to the Reeseville AME Church in Alcolu.
She was a member of Delta Sigma Theta, the YWCA and many other community organizations. In 1998, she was presented the Woman Achievement Award from the YWCA of the Upper Lowlands.
Survivors include a son, Andrew F. Scott of Columbus, Ohio; three brothers, Rufus F. Hawkins of New York City, N.Y., Thomas Irvin Hawkins of Daytona Beach, Fla., and Levi Steve Hawkins of St. Augustine, Fla.; a sister, Audrey Williams of Atlanta; and a grandchild.
She was preceded in death by two brothers, Phillip Hawkins and Andrew Hawkins; and four sisters, Malvenia Hawkins, Carrie M. Hawkins, Susan H. James and Gwendlyon Hawkins.
Funeral services will be held at 2 p.m. Saturday at Antioch AME Church in Rimini with the Rev. Dr. S.R. Miott, pastor, officiating, assisted by the Rev. Malachi Duncan, the Rev. Rufus Gaymon, the Rev. Melissa Green, the Rev. Marie Harvin, Residing Elder B.P. Boston, the Rev. Eliza Black, the Rev. Dr. Bennie Colclough, Residing Elder W.J. Baxter, the Rev. F.A. Frederick and Residing Elder George A. Ashford. Bishop Henry Allen Belin will deliver the eulogy. Burial will be in the church cemetery.

Jermaine Rayshand “Rockco” Taylor, 21, died Sunday, Jan. 27, 2002.
Born Dec. 21, 1980, in Sumter County, he was a son of Johnny Lee Brisbon and Elizabeth Taylor. He attended Lee County public schools. In his youth, he joined Mount Olive AME Church. He was employed in Lugoff.
Survivors include three brothers, Calvin, Jason and Anterral Taylor, all of the home; a sister, Jonika Taylor of Raleigh, N.C.; his maternal grandfather, David Taylor of Lynchburg; and paternal grandmother, Hattie Mae Pearson of Rembert.
