JAMES L. NICHOLS
SUMMERTON — James L. Nichols, 67, husband of Sally Nichols, died Saturday, Feb. 9, 2002, in Summerton.
Born Jan. 16, 1935, in Peoria, Ill., he was a son of Charles L. Nichols and the late Hazel F. McMullen Mitchum. He was a member of St. Matthias Episcopal Church. He was retired from Ford Motor Co. He was a member of the U.S. Navy Reserve.
Survivors besides his wife of Summerton and father of Louisville, Tenn., include two sons, James C. Nichols and John M. Nichols, both of Newport, Mich.; a daughter, Jodi Torrez of Garfield Heights, Ohio; two brothers, Ronald Nichols of Maryville, Tenn., and Charles Nichols of Calhoun, Ga.; a stepdaughter, Linda Ann Mann of Murrells Inlet; and two stepgrandchildren.
Memorial services will be held at 2 p.m. Saturday at St. Matthias Episcopal Church with the Rev. David Thurlow officiating.
The family will receive friends immediately following the service at the St. Matthias Episcopal Church fellowship hall.
Memorials may be made to St. Matthias Episcopal Church, Summerton.

MAJ. JOHN R. RODGERS
Maj. John Reid Rodgers, 37, husband of Lisa Mitchum Rodgers, died Friday, Feb. 8, 2002, in Natchitoches, La.
Born in Sumter, he was a son of Calvin Reid and Margaret Rodgers and Jessie Newman Carter. He was a member of the First Church of God on Wise Drive and was a professor of military science at Northwestern University in Natchitoches.
He was a graduate of Sumter High School and the University of North Carolina-Charlotte. He was commissioned through the University of North Carolina Army ROTC program and began his career as an Army officer May 27, 1987. He was a graduate of the U.S. Army Airborne School, the Engineer Officer Basic Course and the Infantry Officer Advanced Course.
He was a combat veteran of the Persian Gulf War, where he served as the executive officer of A Company, 5th Combat Engineer Battalion, 24th, Infantry Division (Mechanized). Other assignments include platoon leader in the 5th Combat Engineer Battalion, battalion logistics officer of the 43rd and 317th Combat Engineer Battalions, company commander of C Company 317th Combat Engineer Battalion, ROTC instructor at East Tennessee State University, assistant operations officer for the 1st Battalion, 345th Regiment, 5th Brigade, and ROTC instructor at Northwestern State University of Louisiana.
He completed his Engineer Officer Basic Course in 1988, Nuclear Biological Chemical Officer Course in 1989, Infantry Officer Advanced Course in 1992 and Combined Arms Service Staff School in 1997.
During his military career, he received the Meritorious Service Medal, Army Commendation Medal, Army Achievement Medal, Meritorious Unit Commendation Award, Army Superior Unit Award, National Defense Service Medal, Southwest Asia Service Medal with three bronze service stars, Armed Forces Reserve Medal and the Army Service Ribbon.
Survivors besides his wife, his father and stepmother and mother, all of Sumter, include two sons, Jordan Reid Rodgers and Calvin Bryce Rodgers, both of Sumter; his maternal grandmother, Edna Boggs of Sumter; a half-brother, Derrick Ritchie of Columbia; a stepbrother, Mark Smith and his wife, Terri, of Cumming, Ga.; and a stepsister, Melanie Cusack and her husband, Allen, of Florence.
He was preceded in death by his paternal grandparents, Reid M. and Mae H. Rodgers and Mr. and Mrs. E.M. Fields; and his maternal grandfather, E.J.T. Newman.
Funeral services will be held at 10 a.m. Wednesday in the chapel of Elmore-Hill-McCreight Funeral Home with the Rev. Ron Bower and the Rev. Matt Roe officiating. Burial will be in Sumter Cemetery with full military honors.
The family will receive friends from 6 to 8 p.m. Tuesday at the funeral home.
Memorials may be made to the First Church of God, 310 N. Wise Drive, Sumter, S.C. 29150.

Albert Donald Allbritton Sr. died Wednesday, Feb. 13, 2002, at Tuomey Regional Medical Center.

MANNING — Joseph A. Maye, 78, husband of Ruth Haring Maye, died Wednesday, Feb. 13, 2002, at Tuomey Regional Medical Center.

RUBY M. McGEE
Ruby Tawanna Murphy McGee, 21, wife of Troy L. McGee, died Wednesday, Feb. 13, 2002.
Born March 4, 1981, in Brooklyn, N.Y., she was a daughter of James and Martha Stukes Murphy.
The family will receive friends at the home of her father-in-law and mother-in-law, Steven and Larnia McGee, 716 Brand St.
Services will be announced by Sumter Funeral Service Inc. of Sumter.

VONICE B. REINBOLD
REMBERT — Vonice “Speedy” Baker Reinbold, 68, wife of Adam Reinbold, died Wednesday, Feb. 13, 2002, at Providence Hospital in Columbia.
Services will be announced by Elmore-Hill-McCreight Funeral Home of Sumter.

WILLINE J. SCOTT
MIAMI, Fla. — Willine Johnson Scott, 74, widow of Sidney Scott, died Wednesday, Feb. 13, 2002, at her home, 20632 S. West Court, Miami.
Born Nov. 8, 1927, in the Goat Island section of Summerton, she was a daughter of the late Thomas Johnson Sr. and Blanche Carrington Johnson.
The family will receive friends beginning Monday at the home of her sister and brother-in-law, Ruby and B.T. James, Governor Richardson Road, Rimini, and at the home of her brother and sister-in-law, Preston and Bertha Johnson, 2340 Brogdon Circle, Sumter.
Services will be announced by Samuels Funeral Home LLC of Manning.

SAMMIE TONEY
Sammie Toney died Wednesday, Feb. 13, 2002, at his home in Washington, D.C.
Born April 25, 1934, in Lee County, he was a son of the late Tillman Toney and Laura Cain Toney.
Services will be announced by Palmer Memorial Chapel of Sumter.

KEVIN C. BOWLER
BISHOPVILLE — Kevin Charles Bowler, 32, husband of Eunice McLeod, died Saturday, Feb. 9, 2002, in Richland County.
Born in Bronx, N.Y., he was a son of Geneva Bowler and the late Herman Mac Toodle. He attended New York public schools and graduated from J.H.S. 98 High School. He worked for a number of years with the New York fashion district before moving to South Carolina. Former places of employment include South Carolina Parks and Recreation, New South Builders, Kershaw County Medical Center and, most recently, Prestige Farms.
Survivors besides his wife and mother include a stepson, Caleb Alexander of Bishopville; a daughter, Sable Alexis Bowler of Bishopville; a brother, Esantis Bowler of Connecticut; and a sister, Tameaka Adams of Bronx.
Funeral services will be held at 2:30 p.m. Friday at Elizabeth Baptist Church in Bishopville. Burial will be in the church cemetery.
The casket will be placed in the church at 1 p.m. Friday.
The family will receive friends from 3 to 8 p.m. today at the funeral home and other times at 985 Calvary Church Road, Bishopville.

MARGARET B. CAIN
BISHOPVILLE — Margaret Ward Branham Cain, 61, widow of Jerry D. Cain, died Wednesday, Feb. 13, 2002, at Kershaw County Medical Center.
Born in Lee County, she was a daughter of Geneva Watkins Ward and the late John W. Ward. She was a Baptist and a retired nurse.
Survivors besides her mother of Bishopville include three daughters, Rose Blackwell of Bishopville, Becky Jenkinson of Lugoff and Theresa Walters of Folly Beach; and four grandchildren, Tracey Gladden, Bobby Blackwell, Anna Jenkinson and Will Jenkinson.
Funeral services will be held at 3 p.m. Friday in the chapel of Hancock-Elmore-Hill Funeral Home with the Rev. T.W. Mitchell officiating. Burial will be in Piedmont Cemetery.
The family will receive friends from 6 to 8 p.m. today at the funeral home and other times at the home, 105 Ridge St., Bishopville.

THOMAS JOE
BISHOPVILLE — Thomas Joe, 64, husband of Helen Joe, died Tuesday, Feb. 12, 2002, at Kershaw County Medical Center.
Born June 17, 1937, in Lee County, he was a son of the late Player Wilson Joe and Charlie Joe. He was retired from the state of Florida.
Survivors besides his wife include a sister, Willie M. Williams of Bishopville.
Funeral services will be held at 3 p.m. Sunday at St. Matthews Baptist Church in Lee County with the Rev. Freeman officiating. Burial will be in the church cemetery.
The casket will be placed in the church at 2:30 p.m. Sunday.
The funeral procession will leave at 2:30 p.m. from the home of Mrs. Willie M. Williams, 2781 Lucknow Road, Bishopville.
The family will receive friends at the home.

ETHEL D. MOORE
REMBERT — Ethel Davis Dinkins Moore, 102, widow of the Rev. Harvin D. Dinkins and David Moore, died Sunday, Feb. 10, 2002, at 4675 Pineside Drive.
Born Dec. 2, 1899, in Winnsboro, she was a daughter of the late Thomas Davis Sr. and Sibbie Asford Davis. She attended Fairfield County public schools. She later moved to Sumter County, where she met and married the late Rev. Harvin D. Dinkins. After his death, she later married the late David Moore. In her youth, she was baptized and became a member of Rafting Creek Baptist Church, where she served on the missionary society, usher board and Sunday school. She was employed as a cook for Sumter School District 2. She enjoyed traveling, fishing, cooking and sewing.
Survivors include six children, Ollie Dinkins Sr. and Bernice Butler, both of Rembert, Linnie Moore of Dalzell, Lucius Dinkins of Baltimore, Md., Deloris Waters of Philadelphia, Pa., and Susie Robinson of Buffalo, N.Y.; a brother, Deacon Thomas Davis Jr. of Washington, D.C.; a sister, Evangelist Geneva Robinson of Sumter; 35 grandchildren; 76 great-grandchildren; and 44 great-great-grandchildren.
She was preceded in death by five children, Rose Lee, Harvin, Hattie, Edgar and Thomas; a sister, Linnie Mae; and three brothers, Henry, Ollie and Willie.
Funeral services will be held at 3 p.m. Friday at Rafting Creek Baptist Church, S.C. 261 North, Rembert, with the Rev. Dr. Charles H. Davis, pastor, officiating, assisted by the Rev. Willie D. Dennis, Minister John F. Kennedy and the Rev. Derrie Grant. Burial will be in the church cemetery.
The casket will be placed in the church at 2 p.m. Friday.
Grandsons will serve as pallbearers with granddaughters serving as flower bearers.
The funeral procession will leave at 2:30 p.m. from the home of her daughter, Bernice Butler, 4675 Pineside Drive, Rembert.
The family will receive friends at the home of Bernice Butler.

MARGARET RIVERS
SNELLVILLE, Ga. — Margaret Rivers, 54, of Lilburn, Ga., wife of Ben Rivers, died Tuesday, Feb. 12, 2002.
Survivors besides her husband of Lilburn include two sons, Benjamin Rivers Jr. and his wife, Carolyn, of Dacula and Bryan Rivers and his wife, Michelle, of Lawrenceville; a daughter, Marcie Turner and her husband, Chris, of Dacula; her father, George Waite Sr. of Sumter; a brother, Scott Waite and his wife, Dianne, of Sumter; five grandchildren, Chase, Kristen, Katie, Collin and Ashley; a cousin, Mary Ann Dobbins of Lilburn; and a number of nieces and nephews.
Funeral services will be held at 1 p.m. Saturday at Cannon United Methodist Church with Dr. Terry Walton, the Rev. Ralph Devereaux and the Rev. Walter Jones officiating.
The family will receive friends from 6 to 9 p.m. Friday at the funeral home.
Memorials may be made to Cannon United Methodist Church, 2424 Webb Gin House Road, Snellville, GA 30078.

JEFFERY V. TAYLOR JR.
MANNING — Jeffery V. Taylor Jr., 6 weeks, died Tuesday, Feb. 12, 2002, at Palmetto Richland Memorial Hospital in Columbia.
Born Jan. 3, 2002, at Palmetto Richland Memorial Hospital, he was a son of Jeffery V. Taylor Sr. and Sharon Kinder Taylor.
Survivors besides his parents of the home include his maternal grandmother, Hulean M. Kinder of Manning; his paternal great-grandparents, Mr. and Mrs. James Taylor of Alcolu; and a sister, Jazmine M. Garner of the home.
He was preceded in death by twin brothers, Joshua and Caleb Taylor; a sister, Shenice Taylor; and two other siblings.
Funeral services will be held at noon Friday at Apostolic Revival Center United Pentecostal Church, 7 Berkeley St., Manning, with Pastor David W. Gleason Sr. officiating, assisted by the Rev. Edward Harrington Sr. and the Rev. W.L. Clayton. Burial will be in Manning Cemetery.
The casket will be placed in the church at 11 a.m. Friday.
The family will receive friends at the home, 2181 Hector-Walker Road, Manning.

David Rover Jr., 74, died today, Feb. 22, 2002, at Mariner Health of Sumter East.
Born Feb. 25, 1927, in Cottonwood, Ala., he was a son of the late David Rover Sr. and Gertrude Adams Rover.
The family will receive friends at the home of his daughter, Doreen Rover James, 12 Lakeside Drive. Services will be announced by Job’s Mortuary Inc. of Sumter.
