Born Jan. 3, 1928, in Sumter County, she was a daughter of the late Elijah and Sarah Gredic.

NOAH J. ARTRIP
HALIEWA, Hawaii — Noah J. Artrip, 44, husband of Kia Artrip, died Tuesday, Dec. 25, 2001, in Haliewa, Hawaii.
Born in Sumter, he was a son of Margaret B. Artrip and the late Noah D. Artrip, formerly of Pulaski, Va., and Charlotte, N.C. He held a science degree from the University of South Carolina. He had more than 24 years of experience in the protective coatings industry. He was the owner of Rainbow Consultants in Haleiwa, where his specialty included the proper application of protective coatings on new and existing steel, concrete and weathering steel substances. He was a member of the Society for Protective Coatings and the National Association of Corrosion Engineers. He was certified as a protective coating specialist and held certificates in ANSI, AWS and ASME.
Survivors besides his wife of Haliewa and his mother of Sumter include two daughters, Jerin Artrip Hawthorne and Coral Artrip, both of Sumter; three sisters, Sherry Ippolito of Naples, N.Y., Liz McIntyre and Nancy Hilpisch, both of Sumter; and three nephews, Brian, Joseph and David.
Memorial services will be held at 11 a.m. Saturday at Bullock Funeral Home chapel with the Rev. Harold Kirkland officiating. Bullock Funeral Home of Sumter is in charge of arrangements.
JOHN H. GREEN
John Henry Green, 58, died Wednesday, Feb. 20, 2002, at Tuomey Regional Medical Center.
Born July 29, 1943, in Lee County, he was a son of the late Henry Green Jr. and Charlotte Jenkins Green. In his youth, he joined Mt. Olive AME Church in Woodrow.
Survivors include four brothers, Elijah Jenkins of Washington, D.C., James Jenkins of Suitland, Md., Albert Jenkins of Waldorf, Md., and David Green of Forestville, Md.; four sisters, Mary Green of Sumter, Elease Diggs of Washington, D.C., Algia Green of Washington, D.C., and Elizabeth Monroe of Mitchellville, Md.; an uncle, William Jenkins of Sumter; and two aunts, Mabelle Johnson of Sumter and Louise Green of Bishopville.
Funeral services will be held at 2 p.m. Saturday at the John Wesley Williams Sr. Memorial Chapel of Williams Funeral Home Inc., 821 N. Main St., with the Rev. Frank E. Williams Sr. officiating, assisted by the Rev. Marion H. Newton and Minister James E. Williams. Burial will be in Cooksfield Cemetery in Woodrow.
The funeral procession will leave at 1:30 p.m. from the home of his sister, Mary Green, 26 S. Magnolia St.

Joseph Johnson, 67, husband of Betty Yates Johnson, died Sunday, Feb. 17, 2002, at his home.
Born April 10, 1934, in Sumter County, he was a son of the late Joseph Johnson Sr. and Anna Mack Johnson. He was raised by the late Sarah McCray Johnson. He attended Sumter County public schools. He was a member of the Kingdom Hall of Jehovah’s Witness. He was employed by Sumter Housing Authority from October 1976 to November 1990 before retiring.
Survivors besides his wife include two daughters, Josephine Eady and her husband, Paul, of Miami, Fla., and Delma T. Ezell and her husband, Kip, of Atlanta, Ga.; three stepsons, Parris Mitchell, Derrick Cumberbatch and Jamel Cumberbatch, all of New York; three stepdaughters, Betty Brown, Nellie Mitchell and Crystal Johnson, all of New York; three brothers, Willie Johnson and Rosco Johnson, both of Cleveland, Ohio, and Rocky Johnson of Los Angeles, Calif.; five sisters, Sadie Bell Johnson Gibson of Sumter, Ruby Hall of Brooklyn, N.Y., Frances Harrington of Philadelphia, Pa., Velma Scales of Baltimore, Md., and Rosa Mae Staley of Delaware; a grandson, Jordan Ezell of Atlanta; a granddaughter, Tiona Eady of Miami; an aunt, Lucille Murray of Sumter; and eight stepgrandchildren.
He was preceded in death by a sister, Ramona Blackman.
Funeral services will be held at 2 p.m. Saturday at Kingdom Hall of Jehovah’s Witness, 100 Lynam Road, with Elder Eugene Spann officiating, assisted by Elder J.B. Harper and Elder Prince Felder. Burial will be in Bradford Cemetery.

Marie McFadden McDaniel, 93, widow of James McDaniel Sr., died Wednesday, Feb. 20, 2002, at McCoy Memorial Nursing Center in Bishopville.
Born Oct. 23, 1908, in Lee County, she was a daughter of the late Walter and Marie Davis McFadden. She attended Lee County public schools. She was a member of Mechanicsville United Methodist Church. She was also a member of the Faithful Worker, Chapter 229 Order of the Eastern Star in Lamar.
Survivors include two brothers, Harold McFadden and Ernest McFadden, both of Sumter; a son-in-law, John Rogers Jr. of Sumter; nine grandchildren; 15 great-grandchildren; and two great-great-grandchildren.
She was preceded in death by two daughters, Elizabeth Huff and Janie M. Rogers.
Funeral services will be held at 2 p.m. Saturday at Mechanicsville United Methodist Church with the Rev. Herbert Fogle officiating. Burial will be in the church cemetery.
The casket will be placed in the church at 1 p.m. Saturday until the hour of service.

BISHOPVILLE — Ruby Kelley Reynolds, 84, widow of Jared M. Reynolds, died Wednesday, Feb. 20, 2002, at McLeod Regional Medical Center in Florence.
Born in Lee County, she was a daughter of the late Ashby M. Kelley and Mamie Holland Kelley. She was a member of High Hill True Light Church.
Survivors include a son, R.A. Reynolds and his wife, Bea, of Sumter; two daughters, Elizabeth Reynolds of Bishopville and Mary Sue Parham and her husband, Joe, of Columbia; two sisters, Leconia K. Baker and Lola K. McCoy, both of Bishopville; two brothers, Robert Kelley of Bishopville and Pat Kelley of Orangeburg; three granddaughters, Kelly P. Yarbrough, Leigh R. Newman and Helen P. Costenbader; a grandson, Ashley Reynolds; and three great-grandchildren.

Edith Scott, 82, wife of David Scott, died Tuesday, Feb. 19, 2002, at Tuomey Regional Medical Center.
Born April 10, 1919, in Sumter County, she was a daughter of the late Scott and Nora Butler Loney Sr. In her youth, she joined Hopewell Baptist Church. She later joined Emmanuel United Methodist Church.
Survivors besides her husband include a sister, Rosa L. Williams of St. Albans, N.Y.; and a number of nieces and nephews.
Funeral services will be held at 2 p.m. Saturday at Emmanuel United Methodist Church, Bee and South Main Street, with the Rev. Kay A. Best, pastor, officiating. Burial will be in Hopewell Baptist Church cemetery.

Walter “Smitty” Smith, 83, widower of Laura Witherspoon Smith, died Wednesday, Feb. 20, 2002, at Tuomey Regional Medical Center.
Born Sept. 20, 1918, in the Privateer community of Sumter County, he was a son of the late Bunion and Josephine Singleton Smith. He was a member of Salem Baptist Church for 42 years and served on the trustee board and the male chorus.
Survivors include three sons, Leroy Smith of Savannah, Ga., and Jackie Smith and Leon Smith, both of Sumter; two daughters, Loretha Stukes and Ola Mae Manning, both of Sumter; a brother, Lewis Smith of Sumter; three sisters, Martha Ann James of Pinewood, Bessie Sherod of Sumter and Lillian Carpenter of Summerville; 13 grandchildren; 26 great-grandchildren; three great-great-grandchildren; and a number of nieces and nephews.
He was preceded in death by a son, Joseph Smith; and a daughter, Inez Patasaw.
Funeral services will be held at 2 p.m. Saturday at Salem Baptist Church with the Rev. Dr. T.O. Everett, pastor, officiating, assisted by the Rev. Dr. Ralph W. Canty Sr., the Rev. Thomas Blyther, Minister Barbara Lash and the Rev. George Furman. Burial will be in Smith Cemetery.

PINEWOOD — Margaret Carraway Smoot, 51, widow of Willie James Gamble and Alexander Smoot, died Monday, Feb. 18, 2002, at Palmetto Richland Memorial Hospital.
Born Jan. 25, 1951, in Sumter County, she was a daughter of Josephine J. Richardson and the stepdaughter of Ransom Richardson. She was raised by her grandmother, Mary J. Carraway, and stepgrandfather, Fred Carraway, her adoptive parents. She was a 1968 graduate of Manchester High School. In her youth, she joined Antioch Union Methodist Episcopal Church in Rimini.
Survivors besides her parents and grandparents include a son, James Gamble of Paxville; a daughter, Kathy Gamble-Stone and her husband, Charles Edward, of Waipahu, Hawaii; three stepsons, Willie Lee Smoot and Jerry Lewis Smoot, both of Sumter, and Alexander Smoot Jr. and his wife, Donisa, of High Point, N.C.; two stepdaughters, Mamie Lee Smoot Baxter and her husband, Horton, of Manning and Doretha Smoot Johnson and her husband, William, of Sumter; four brothers, Earl Richardson and his wife, Josephine, of Pinewood, Harsen Richardson and his wife, Roxanne, of Rimini, Ransom Richardson Jr. and his wife, Camilla, of Thomasville, N.C., and Leroy Richardson and his wife, Eturla, of Lumberton, N.C.; three sisters, Lillie Jordan and her husband, Robert Sr., and Jurleen Stubbs and her husband, Larry, all of Sumter, and Betty Farrar and her husband, Gary Sr., of Irvington, N.J.; and two grandchildren.
She was preceded in death by two brothers, David Richardson and Ronnie Richardson.

HEYWARD WAITERS
Heyward “Teddy” Waiters, widower of Juanita Patino Waiters, died Tuesday, Feb. 19, 2002, at Tuomey Regional Medical Center.
Born April 24, 1922, in Sumter, he was a son of the late Sam Ned Waiters and Louvenia Johnson Waiters. He was raised and educated in the Pinewood community. He completed training at the Nepau Villiage Technical School in Hartford, Conn. He enlisted in the U.S. Army and was stationed in Luxemburg, Germany. He participated in the invasion on Normandy in World War II. After his tour of duty, he moved to New York City, where he was employed in the chrome industry until his retirement. In 1982, the Waiters family relocated to the Sumter community. He opened the Waiters Grocery Store, located on Williams Street in Sumter. He sponsored youth baseball teams.
Survivors include a stepdaughter, Geraldine Clark of Durham, N.C.; three sisters, Frances N. Smith of Bronx, N.Y., Almetta W. King and Thelma Hunter, both of Darien, Ga.; a special cousin, Elizabeth Burns of Sumter; a special companion, Darlene Brown of Columbia; four nephews; and four nieces.
He was preceded in death by a stepson, Frederick; a brother, Robert Waiters; and a sister, Julius Ellis.
Funeral services will be held at 1 p.m. Saturday at Palmer Memorial Chapel with the Rev. Q.B. Conyers officiating, assisted by Minister Viette Hunter. Burial will be in New Hope Cemetery in Pinewood.

LAKE CITY — Janie G. Singletary Wright, 69, wife of Swillie Wright, died Saturday, Feb. 16, 2002, at her home.
Born Oct. 14, 1932, in Florence County, she was a daughter of Millie Skeeter Graham of Lake City and the late Ira Graham. She retired from Carter Manufacturing Co. of Lake City.
Survivors besides her husband and mother include a son, Joe David Singletary Jr. and his wife, Joanne, of Danville, Va.; two brothers, James Henry Graham of Philadelphia, Pa., and Alfred Graham of Washington, D.C.; four sisters, Evangelist Alberta Graham and Geneviene Montgomery, both of Lake City, Evangelist Carrie B. McClam of Capitol Heights, Md., and Clanzy Weston of Sayreville, N.J.; and six grandchildren.
She was preceded in death by a brother, Paul Graham.
Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m. Saturday at Mt. Clair Baptist Church, Peachtree Street, Lake City, with the Rev. W.L. Thompson officiating. Burial will be in Martha Crosby Cemetery.

KERSHAW — Charles Michael Byrd, 52, of 2148 McBee Highway, Kershaw, died Saturday, Feb. 23, 2002, at Springs Memorial Hospital in Lancaster.
Born on Sept. 4, 1949, in Lancaster, he was the son of the late David and Louise Horton Byrd. He was a member of Mt. Pisgah Baptist Church.
Survivors include a brother, Joseph R. Byrd and his wife, Jean, of Sumter; two sisters, Judy B. Knight and her husband, Richard, of Lancaster, and Sandra Kay Price of Jefferson; and a sister-in-law, Marth M. Byrd of Kershaw.
He was preceded in death by one brother, Jimmy Lee Byrd.
