ROCK HILL — Pauline Sams Morgan, 88, formerly of Sumter and Candler, N.C., died Friday, Feb. 22, 2002, at White Oak Manor in Rock Hill.
Born in Buncombe County, N.C., she was the daughter of the late O.C. and Sophronia Green Sams. She was married to Norman I. Morgan, who died in 1989.
She was a member of White Rock Baptist Church in Candler.
Survivors include three daughters, June Morgan of Killen, Al., Paula Barth of Wedgefield, and Nancy Race of Rock Hill; two sons, Herschel S. Morgan of Candler and Gary Morgan of Boone, N.C.; 16 grandchildren; and 15 great-grandchildren.
Funeral services will be at 2 p.m. in the Patton Avenue chapel of Groce Funeral Home in Asheville, NC. The Rev. Kevin Bennett will officiate.
Burial will be at White Rock Baptist Church Cemetery.
The family will receive friends from 4 to 6 p.m. today at the funeral home.

David Rover Jr., 74, husband of Emma Rover, died on Friday, Feb. 22, 2002, at Mariner Health of Sumter East.
Born on Feb. 25, 1927, in Cottonwood, Ala., he was the son of the late David Rover Sr. and Gertrude Adams Rover Henderson. He lived most of his adult life in the Bronx, N.Y., where for 27 years he was employed with the Westshore Paper and Twine Company. After retirement, he lived in Charlotte, N.C., for 20 years and later moved to Sumter.
He was a member of Star of Bethlehem Church for many years.
Survivors in addition to his wife include two daughters, Cynthia Melba Rover of Asheville, NC and Doreen James of Sumter; a brother, William J. Henderson; four sisters, Cora Lucky, Elizabeth Kenniebrew, Chysteen Conover and Josephine Cypress; and two grandsons, Donald Heyward of Beaufort and Brandon James of Sumter.
Viewing will be held today at Job’s Mortuary.
Funeral services will be held at 1 p.m. Monday at the parlor of Job’s Mortuary Inc. Burial will be in Hillside Memorial Park.

Charlie Eugene Ward, 92, husband of Edna Ragin Ward, died Thursday, Feb. 21, 2002, at his home.
Born June 13, 1909, in Davis Station, he was a son of the late William Shovine Ward and Lilly Ann Aycock Ward. He was a farmer and a member of Manning United Methodist Church.
Survivors besides his wife of Manning include two daughters, Barbara “Bobbie” Ward Land of Sumter and Dianne Ward of Bishopville; three sons, Oneil Ward, Edward Ward and Ray Ward, all of Manning; 11 grandchildren; and 17 great-grandchildren.
Ward was preceded in death by a daughter, Audrey Ward Bullock.
Funeral services will be held at 3 p.m. today at Stephens Funeral Home Chapel in Manning. The Rev. Ron Pettit will officiate. Burial will follow in Manning Cemetery.
Grandsons Jimmy Parker, Eddie Ward, Brian Ward, J.C. Ward, Dave Harrison and Billy Ray Ward will serve as pallbearers.

Emily Geneva Ramsey Ball, 84, widow of Joseph Ball, died Friday, Feb. 22, 2002, at Tuomey Regional Medical Center.
Born Nov. 25, 1917, in Sumter County, she was a daughter of the late Fred D. and Lucy Rich Ramsey. She attended Sumter County public schools, Morris College and Duke University. She was a retired educator and worked faithfully for a number of years in her church and community.
Survivors include a foster son, Edward Jenkins of Queens, N.Y.; a brother, Hosea Ramsey of Sumter; two devoted friends, Eleanor Coubarous and Virginia Hilton; and a number of nieces, nephews and sisters-in-law.
She was preceded in death by four brothers, three sisters, a niece and two nephews.
Funeral services will be held at noon Tuesday at Heritage Chapel Church, 710 Manning Ave. with the Rev. Dr. Ralph W. Canty officiating. Burial will be in Devotion Gardens in Marion.

PINEWOOD — Inez Taylor Dow, 89, widow of Joseph Dow, died Wednesday, Feb. 20, 2002, at Hopewell HealthCare Center in Sumter.
Born April 13, 1912, in Sumter County, she was a daughter of the late Franklin and Mary Boyd Taylor. She attended Sumter County public schools. In her youth, she joined New Hope UME Church in Pinewood, where she was a faithful member of many auxiliaries and was mother of the church.
Survivors include two sons, Thomas Dow of Brooklyn, N.Y., and Raymond Dow of Thomasville, N.C.; three daughters, Almeta Moore of Pinewood, Louise Dow of St. Albany, N.Y., and Evelyn Alceqaire of Miami, Fla.; a brother, Jessie Taylor of Orlando, Fla.; a sister, Winnie Adkinson of Brooklyn; two adopted sons, Earnest Dow of Pinewood and James Brown of Thomasville, N.C.; two adopted daughters, Dorothy Dow of Boston, Mass., and Josephine White of Pinewood; 24 grandchildren; and 34 great-grandchildren.

REV. JOHN H. ELLISON
MANNING — The Rev. John Henry Ellison, husband of Sadie Mae Kinder Ellison, died Wednesday, Feb. 20, 2002, at Dorn Veterans Medical Center in Columbia.
Born Jan. 21, 1932, in Clarendon County, he was a son of the late George and Carrie Oliver Ellison. He attended Clarendon County public schools. In his youth, he joined Elizabeth Baptist Church in Manning. In 1953, he joined the U.S. Army and served during the Korean War. After an honorable discharge, he returned to Clarendon County, where he was a progressive farmer for most of his life.
In 1983, he joined the ministry. He preached to individuals who were unable to attend church by ministering weekly to the residents of Windsor Manor Nursing Home in the Silver community of Clarendon County, Dorch Community Center in Manning, Carriage Nursing Home in Sumter, Mariner Nursing Home in Sumter and Lake Marion Nursing Home in Summerton. At the age of 70, he faithfully ministered daily.
Survivors besides his wife include five sons, John Ellison Jr. and Lenard Ellison, both of Davis Station, Rodrick Ellison of Columbia, Rochester Kinder of Irvington, N.J., and Richard Kinder of East Orange, N.J.; four daughters, MaLinda Ham of the home, Marilyn Rich and her husband, Bennie, of Willingboro, N.J., Pastor Sherry Williamson and her husband, Brooks, of Johnston, and Patricia Burwell and her husband, Gary, of Columbia; three brothers, James “Elec” Ellison of Manning, Albert Brailsford of Sumter and William B. Brailsford of New York; two sisters, Phillis Walker and her husband, Cleveland, of Manning and Rhodie Jones of Bellport, N.Y.; 16 grandchildren; and a great-grandchild.
