Lillie Wright, 50, died Tuesday, Feb. 26, 2002, at Tuomey Regional Medical Center.
Born July 1, 1951, in Sumter County, she was a daughter of Margaret China Wright and the late James Wright. She was a 1969 graduate of Eastern High School and continued her education at Oakwood College in Huntsville, Ala., where she majored in sociology. In her youth, she joined St. Mark Seventh-day Adventist Church (Berea). She served in various capacities at Berea including Sabbath school superintendent, investment leader, community service worker, Bible worker, St. Mark youth choir, women ministry coordinator and assisted with the prison ministry and Adventist youth society. She was currently serving as a Sabbath school teacher, treasurer of Berea Junior Academy and disability coordinator.
She was a member of the Sumter Connective Tissue Foundation Inc. and Berea Junior Academy School Board. She received a number of awards throughout her life. She was listed among Who’s Who Among Young Americans and Berea’s Woman of the Year.
She was employed as a social worker at the South Carolina Department of Social Services in Sumter until her retirement because of declining health.
Survivors besides her mother include a brother, Edward Wright and his wife, Alicia, of Lawrenceville, Ga.; three sisters, Genovia Richardson and her husband, Wilbur, of Washington, D.C., Doria Waldon and her husband, Herald, of Sanford, Fla., and Beverly E. Wright of Sumter; a foster brother, Elmore Thomas and his wife, Blanche; four foster sisters, Inez Jones, Christine Bradley and her husband, Albert, Diana Hunter and Larata McKiever; foster parents, Haskell and Louise Staley; and a number of nieces and nephews.
She was preceded in death by a sister, Maxine Wright Davis.
Funeral services will be held at 2:30 p.m. Tuesday at Berea Seventh-day Adventist Church in Sumter with Elder Eugene Mason, pastor, officiating, assisted by the Revs. Willie L. DuPree, Friendly J. Gadson, Frank Harrell, Emanuel Jackson, Julia Sanders, and Elders Joseph Taylor and Robert L. McCants. Burial will be in Hillside Memorial Park.
The casket will be placed in the church at 1:30 p.m. Tuesday.
The family will receive friends at the home, 1013 Plowden Mill Road.

Born March 11, 1917, in Sumter County, he was a son of the late Thomas Pringle and Lannie Cooper Pringle.

Macy Williams, widow of Roosevelt Henry Williams, died Monday, March 4, 2002, at Mariner Health of Sumter East.
Born Dec. 4, 1914, in the Stateburg-Claremont community of Sumter County, she was a daughter of the late Louise Weathers.

Leila Copeland Belken, 60, wife of Lawrence J. Belken, died Friday, March 1, 2002.
Born in Sumter County, she was a daughter of the late John Marion Copeland and Susan Josey Copeland. She was a member of First Church of the Nazarene, where she was a member of the choir and the Quarterly Sunday School Class. She was employed by Sumter Cabinet Co.
Survivors besides her husband include two sons, David Christopher Belken and his wife, Erica, and Patrick J. Belken and his wife, Leslie, all of Sumter; a daughter, Margaret Penina Cooper and her husband, William, of Edwards Air Force Base, Calif.; four brothers, Thurmond Copeland of Denham Springs, La., James Copeland and Josey Copeland, both of Sumter, and Gerald Copeland of Dalzell; two sisters, Rebecca McDuffie and Janie Copeland, both of Sumter; and six grandchildren, Stephanie Cooper, Emily Cooper, William Cooper, Anna Belken, Patrick Belken Jr. and Ethan Belken.
Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m. Wednesday at First Church of the Nazarene with Dr. James Thrower, the Rev. B.W. Downing and the Rev. Gene Stokes officiating. Burial will be in Bethany Baptist Church cemetery.

Zola Mae Seymour Clark, widow of Eddie Clark Sr., died Friday, March 1, 2002, at Mariner Health of Sumter East.
Born April 26, 1913, she was a daughter of the late Giffin Seymour Sr. and Viola Wilson Seymour Gordon. She attended Sumter County public schools and completed her education at the Goodhope School in the Brogdon community. She was a lifelong member of Mulberry Missionary Baptist Church.
Survivors include four sons, Eddie Clark Jr., Charles Seymour, Griffen Seymour and Roland Seymour, all of Sumter; five daughters, Mary White, Virginia McGill, Gwendolyn Spann, Bessie Ruth Solomon and Ada Hicks, all of Sumter; three sisters, Susan Johnson, Lillian Mitchell and Theola Benjamin, all of Sumter; 31 grandchildren; 54 great-grandchildren; 12 great-great-grandchildren; and a number of nieces and nephews.
She was preceded in death by three daughters, Ruth Montgomery, Betty Deloris Clark and Bertha Blackwell; and three sisters, Octavia Gordon, Marie Tomlin and Pearl Tiller Smalls.
Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m. Wednesday at Mulberry Missionary Baptist Church with the Rev. Otis S. Scott Sr. officiating, assisted by the Rev. C.H. Davis, the Rev. George C. Mackey and Elder C. Dukes. Burial will be in the church cemetery.

MAYESVILLE — Leon G. Hanisch, 81, husband of Lucille B. Hanisch, died Monday, March 4, 2002, at Tuomey Regional Medical Center.
Born in LaGrange, Texas, he was a son of the late Emil Hanisch and Laura Schuette Hanisch. He was a member of Mayesville Presbyterian Church and a retired U.S. Air Force major with 22 years of service. He was a World War II veteran and served in the European Theatre. He was a recipient of the Distinguished Flying Cross, the Air Medal with 8 Oak Leaf Cluster, the Purple Heart and the Campaign Medal with three bronze stars.
Survivors besides his wife of Mayesville include a son, David L. Hanisch and his wife, Maggie, of Sumter; two daughters, Sharon Hanisch of Columbia and Linda Ingram of Sumter; a sister, Gladys Avilia of San Antonio, Texas; four grandchildren, Ginger Wilfong and her husband, Jeff, of Raleigh, N.C., Leslie C. Ingram Jr. and his wife, Diane, of Turbeville, Stacy Hanisch and David Hanisch Jr., both of Sumter; three great-grandchildren, Matthew Wilfong, Claire Wilfong and C.J. Ingram; and two step-great-grandchildren, Travis and Chris Billings.
He was preceded in death by three brothers, John Hanisch, Alfred Hanisch and Harry Hanisch; and a sister, Mary Miles.
Graveside services will be held at 2 p.m. Wednesday at Mayesville Black River Cemetery with the Rev. Dr. D. McNab Morrison and Brian Peake officiating.

SUMMERTON — Joe Nathan Henry, 68, husband of Susie “Mamie” Anderson Henry, died Thursday, Feb. 28, 2002, at Tuomey Regional Medical Center in Sumter.
Born July 10, 1933, in Summerton, he was a son of the late Gilbert H. Henry and Willie Neal Henry. He was a graduate of Scott’s Branch High School in Summerton. In his youth, he was a member of Taw Caw Baptist Church.
He joined the U.S. Air Force in 1954 and served in the Korean War.
He was honorably discharged in 1957. He was employed by Walker Tire and Recapping in Manning for more than 41 years. He was a member of the NAACP.
Survivors besides his wife include two sons, Joey Henry of Summerton and Kenneth Cunningham of Waldorf, Md.; two daughters, Karen Henry and Terry Ragin, both of Columbia; two brothers, Robert Henry and Eddie Lee Henry, both of Summerton; three sisters, Ethel Jones of Summerton, Betty Simmons of Chicago, Ill., and Phyllis Bardliving of Calumet City, Ill.; two grandchildren he raised as his own, Tasha Henry and Tony Henry, both of the home; and eight grandchildren.
He was preceded in death by one child.
Funeral services will be held at 2:30 p.m. Wednesday at Elizabeth Baptist Church in Manning with the Rev. Dr. James L. Tindal officiating, assisted by the Rev. Dr. William T. Johnson, the Rev. J.L. McCloud, the Rev. Dr. S.R. Miott and the Rev. Roosevelt Boyd.

Born in Lee County, she was a daughter of the late Roy Williams and Rosanna Bishop Williams. She attended Lee County public schools. She was a member of Jerusalem Stuckey Baptist Church, where she served as president of the missionary ministry.

DALZELL — Viola Keith Mahoney, 82, widow of Thomas Mahoney Sr., died Saturday, March 2, 2002, at her home.
Born Oct. 13, 1919, in Sumter County, she was a daughter of the late Horace Keith and Hattie Phillips Keith. In her youth, she joined Grant Hill Baptist Church, where she served on the senior choir and the missionary choir until her health failed.
Survivors include two sons, Thomas Mahoney of Dalzell and John Mahoney; three daughters, Bertha Bembry of New York, N.Y., Lillie Wells of Dalzell and Patricia Gavin; two sisters, Mary Staley and Lovella Evans, both of Sumter; 11 grandchildren; and 13 great-grandchildren.
She was preceded in death by two grandchildren.
