MANNING — Louise Betrand Billups, widow of Wesley Billups, died Saturday, March 16, 2002, at her home in Manning.
Born June 6, 1930, in Clarendon County, she was a daughter of the late Joshua Edward Betrand and Azalee Dingle Betrand. She was a member of Ebenezer Baptist Church, where she served on the missionary society, served as coordinator of the culinary committee and was director of the youth department. She was a member of the Manning branch of the NAACP and Expo Committee. She was co-owner and operator of Mercury Cleaners for a number of years.
Survivors include a grandson she raised as her own, Derrick Billups of Manning; an adopted son, Tracy Morales of Sumter; six daughters, Pearline Tolbert and Azalee Blackwell, both of Sumter, Loretta Way of Paxville, Mary Alice Oxendine of Wedgefield, Bertha Hatcher of Summerton and Geneva Bookman of Columbia; two brothers, James Edward Bertrand of Manning and Lewis Bertrand of Charlotte, N.C.; two sisters, Bessie Robertson of Brooklyn, N.Y., and Ruby Parker of Camden; and 15 grandchildren.
Funeral services will be held at 3 p.m. today at Ebenezer Baptist Church in Manning with the Rev. George Windley officiating, assisted by the Rev. Jack Lewis Jr., the Rev. Walt Phillips and the Rev. C. Richburg. Burial will be in Mt. Zero Baptist Church cemetery.

MANNING — Ella Jane Blanding, widow of Lee Blanding, died Tuesday, March 19, 2002, at Clarendon Memorial Hospital.
Born Jan. 19, 1914, in Clarendon County, she was a daughter of the late Allen Sweat and Ella Epps Sweat. She attended Clarendon County public schools. She was a devoted member of Mt. Zero Baptist Church and the Manning branch of the NAACP.
Survivors include three sons, Thomas Blanding of Fayetteville, N.C., and Larry Blanding and Alvin Blanding, both of Manning; four daughters, Carrie Billups of Bridgeport, Conn., Mamie Scott of Washington, D.C., Pearline Robinson and Ella Shiggs, both of Manning; a brother, Calvin Sweat of Sumter; 27 grandchildren; 53 great-grandchildren; and 22 great-great-grandchildren.
Funeral services will be held at 3 p.m. Saturday at Mt. Zero Baptist Church in Paxville with the Rev. Henry Presley officiating, assisted by the Rev. Lincoln Blanding, the Rev. Terry Johnson, the Rev. Herman Gibson and the Rev. C. Richburg. Burial will be in the church cemetery.

Rosa Lee Cunningham, 73, wife of Newton R. Cunningham, died Sunday, March 17, 2002, at Tuomey Regional Medical Center.
Born Aug. 28, 1928, in the St. Paul section of Clarendon County, she was a daughter of the late Julius and Rosa Nelson. She attended Clarendon County public schools. She was a member of Jehovah Missionary Baptist Church.
Survivors include four sons, Newton Roy Cunningham of Suffolk, Va., Julius Lee Cunningham and Tony Isreal Cunningham, both of Sumter, and Willie Alfred Cunningham of Augusta, Ga.; four daughters, Marie Brown of Brooklyn, N.Y., Yvonne Johnson and Rosemell Legett, both of Bronx, N.Y., and Viola Williams of Trenton, N.J.; three brothers, Joseph Nelson, Elijah Nelson and Gilbert Nelson, all of Sumter; a sister, Ola Mae Williams of Summerton; 29 grandchildren; and five great-grandchildren.
She was preceded in death by a daughter, Nola Cunningham.
Funeral services will be held at 3 p.m. Friday at Jehovah Missionary Baptist Church with Pastor Marion H. Newton officiating, assisted by Pastor Ricky Simmons. Burial will be in Bradford Cemetery.
The casket will be placed in the church at 2 p.m.

Waddell “Rusty” Frierson Jr., 43, died Wednesday, March 20, 2002, at Palmetto Richland Memorial Hospital in Columbia.
Born in Sumter, he was a son of Annette Frye Frierson and the late Waddell Frierson Sr. He was a member and deacon of Shiloh Pentecostal Holiness Church and served as Sunday school superintendent for a number of years.
Survivors besides his mother of Sumter include a son, Justin Wade Frierson; a daughter, McKenzie Danielle Frierson; and a cousin who lived in his home, Carolyn Frye, all of Sumter.
He was preceded in death by his grandparents, the Rev. T.B. and Lottie Frierson and Mr. and Mrs. James H. Frye Sr.
Funeral services will be held at 2 p.m. Saturday at Shiloh Pentecostal Holiness Church with the Rev. Bobby Driggers and the Rev. Greg Thompson officiating. Burial will be in Sumter Cemetery.
James Frye, Frankie Frye, Ted Frye, Tony Alexander, Jerry Stone and Eric Frye will serve as pallbearers. Deacons of Shiloh Pentecostal Holiness Church will serve as honorary pallbearers.

Addie Elizabeth Wadford Hinson, widow of Sammie Lee Hinson, died Wednesday, March 20, 2002, at her home.
Born May 24, 1914, in Clarendon County, she was a daughter of the late Harley Calhoun and Susan Annah Trimnal Wadford. She was a member of Grace Baptist Church, the Friendship Sunday School Class, the XYZ Club and a former member of the XYZ Choir. She was retired from Berger’s Men Shop.
Survivors include two daughters, Elizabeth Wells and her husband, Phillip, with whom she made her home, and Marguerite Reardon and her husband, Norward, both of Sumter; two granddaughters, Debbie Carraway of Sumter and Cynthia Frenz and her husband, Edward, of Charleston; three grandsons, Carl Carraway and his wife, Denise, of Elgin, Kenneth Reardon and his wife, Lisa, of Sumter, and Paul Reardon and his wife, Ashley, of Hartsville; a stepgranddaughter, Jeannie Moss and her husband, Tommy, of Sumter; nine great-grandchildren; and a number of nieces and nephews.
She was preceded in death by eight brothers and a sister.
Funeral services will be held at 3 p.m. Friday in the chapel of Elmore-Hill-McCreight Funeral Home with the Rev. Dr. James Chandler officiating. Burial will be in Sumter Cemetery.

Thelma Durant McBride, wife of Willie McBride, died Monday, March 18, 2002, at Tuomey Regional Medical Center.
Born May 29, 1933, in Sumter County, she was a daughter of Henry Porcher and the late Clara King. She attended Sumter County public schools. She was a member of Bethlehem Baptist Church, where she was a member of the Prince Scholarship Fund, missionary ministry, the women action ministry, Sunday church and Bible study worker. She sang with several gospel groups including the Royal Singers, the Gardener Singers, the Corinthians and the Morning Star.
Survivors besides her husband and father include two sons, Vernal Lenard McBride and Shirone King, both of Sumter; a daughter, Elaine M. Hill of Greenville; seven brothers, Tyrone Hargrove, Evan Porcher, Wendell Porcher, Charles Porcher and John King, all of Sumter, Matthew Porcher of Washington, D.C., and Henry Porcher of Upper Marlboro, Md.; and 11 sisters, Tonia Brunson, Mamie Cabbagestalk and Everlina Porcher, all of Sumter, Mary King, Peggy McDaniels, Mary Nelsen and Mayola Ward, all of Philadelphia, Pa., Viola Dubose of Baltimore, Md., Estell Mack of Dalzell and Gladys Dyson and Gloria Boyd, both of Ft. Washington, Md.; and six grandchildren.

Mattie Estelle Kelley Sinclair, 79, widow of Paul F. Sinclair Jr., died Sunday, March 24, 2002, at Palmetto Richland Memorial Hospital in Columbia. Born in Eastover, she was the daughter of the late Daniel T. Kelley and the late Daisy Ruth Hinson Kelley. She worked as an area Realtor for more than 20 years, most recently with Century 21 Walton Agency. She worked in sales for many years in Trenton, N.J., before moving to Sumter. She was a former member of Central Baptist Church in Trenton, N.J., where she served in numerous capacities. She attended Sumter Baptist Temple. Survivors include three sons, Paul F. Sinclair III and his wife Rosemary of Dalzell, Stephen C. Sinclair and his wife Donna of Perkasie, Pa., and Timothy K. Sinclair and his wife Tracey of Indianapolis, In.; one daughter, Suellen S. Wenz and her husband Robert of Rockville, Md.; three brothers, Franklin Kelley of Sumter, Robert Kelley and Carroll Kelley, both of Wedgefield; two sisters, Louise Scheule of Pilesgrove, N.J., May Willa Davis of Sumter; and 11 grandchildren and one great-grandchild. Born in Lee County, he was a son of the late Mose Mickens and the late Mary Fleming Mickens. He was educated in the public schools of Lee County. He was a retired mechanic and a self-employed construction worker for many years. Survivors besides his wife include one son, Mark Mickens and wife Alfreda of Bishopville; four daughters, Jearline Thomas and husband Willie James Jr. of Lithonia, Ga., Joe Ann Mickens, Bessie Davis and husband Asbury, and Helen Mickens, all of Bishopville; adopted sons, William Farmer and Sammy McQuiller; one brother, Mose Mickens of Philadelphia, Pa.; three sisters, Lubertha Hickmon of Patterson, N.J., Gertrude Mickens, Annie Hampton and husband Russell, both of Philadelphia, Pa.; and 16 grandchildren and four great-grandchildren. JOHN H. McLEES
John Harlan McLees, husband of Betty Condrey McLees, died Sunday, March 24, 2002, at Providence Hospital after an extended illness. Born Oct. 17, 1926, in Greenville, he was a son of the late John Robert and Doris Stubblefield. He graduated from Greenville High School and attended Clemson College. In 1953, he graduated from the University of Georgia with a B.S. in forestry and was a member of the forestry honor society, Xi Sigma Pi. He had a 30-year career with the South Carolina State Forestry Commission. Prior to retirement, he served in Walterboro, Spartanburg, Bishopville, Newberry and the state office in Columbia. Working in coordination with the Federal Forest Service, he was instrumental in creating the first fire simulator used to train firefighters in forest fire control. He was a World War II veteran, serving in the U.S. Air Force in the Philippines. He was a member of St. Luke’s Methodist Church in Spartanburg. Survivors besides his wife of 53 years include one son, John Gavin McLees of Cleveland and Richard Tyler McLees of White Rock; one daughter, Elizabeth Ross of Laurens; a son-in-law and a daughter-in-law; three grandchildren; and two stepgrandchildren and nieces and nephews. He was proceeded in death by a brother, Robert Bruce McLees of Richland, Wash.; his grandmother, Dr. Hallie Pearl Stubblefield of Greenville and his aunt, Constance Hughes of Greenville.
