MANNING — Levi Conyers Sr., 82, widower of Leona Watson Conyers, died Thursday, April 4, 2002, at Tuomey Regional Medical Center in Sumter.
Born April 15, 1919, in the Jordan community of Clarendon County, he was a son of the late Oliva Conyers Simon and a stepson of the late Priestly Simon.
The family will receive friends at the home of his daughter Rosetta Robinson and her husband, Johnny, 1717 Cummings Road, Manning. Services will be announced by Samuels Funeral Home LLC in Manning.
CARRIE M. CUMMINGS
Carrie Mae Cummings, 43, died Friday, March 29, 2002, at her home.
Born Sept. 26, 1958, she was a daughter of the late James and Matilda Anderson Cummings. She was a former faithful member of the Sumter West Congregation of the Kingdom Hall of Jehovah’s Witnesses.
Survivors include three brothers, James Cummings Jr., Willie Cummings and Eddie Cummings, all of Sumter; eight sisters, Rosa Lee Oliver, Jannie Lee Daniels, Josephine Shaw, Bertha Shaw, Betty Brown, Jacqueline Cummings, Gloria Sumter and Marie Cummings, all of Sumter; and a number of uncles, aunts, nephews and nieces.
She was preceded in death by two brothers, Robert Lee Cummings and Frankie Lee Cummings; and a nephew, Charles Oliver.
Funeral services will be held at 3 p.m. Saturday at the Kingdom Hall of Jehovah Witness, 100 Lynam Road, with brother J.B. Harper officiating. Burial will be in Bradford Cemetery. The casket will be placed in the church at 2 p.m.

BEULAH T. CUTTINO
Beulah Tindal Cuttino, 95, died Friday, March 22, 2002, at Covenant Place in Sumter.
Born in Sumter County, she was a daughter of the late Harry Wells and Beulah Tindal Cuttino. She was a member of First Baptist Church and was a graduate of Winthrop College. She was a retired school teacher and civil service employee. She was also engaged in forest farming. She was a member of the Pilot Club, the United Daughters of the Confederacy, the Daughters of the American Revolution, the Artist Guild and the Wednesday Afternoon Book Club.
Survivors include a nephew, Dr. John T. Cuttino and his wife, Carolyn Dedrick, of Lexington, Mass.; a niece, Dr. Harriette Buchanan and her husband, Baird, of Boone, N.C.; three great-nephews, Jay Cuttino, Ian Buchanan and David Cuttino; and a great-niece, Joy Cuttino.
Graveside services will be held at 11 a.m. Saturday at Sumter Cemetery with the Rev. Dr. Kirk Smith officiating.
The family will receive friends from 6 to 8 p.m. today at the funeral home. Memorials may be made to First Baptist Church or to a charity of one’s choice. Elmore-Hill-McCreight Funeral Home of Sumter is in charge of arrangements.

Doyle Seabrook Roberson, 30, died Wednesday, April 3, 2002, in Clarendon County.
Born Aug. 12, 1971, in Sumter, he was a son of Ronald S. and Joyce Floyd Roberson. He was a graduate of Clarendon Hall and Horry-Georgetown Technical College. He was employed at Lowe’s in Columbia and was a member of Southern Methodist Church in Summerton.
Survivors besides his parents include a sister, Sherri R. McInnis and her husband, Neil, of Summerton; a maternal stepgrandmother, Virginia M. McLeod of Six Mile; a niece, Peyton McInnis; and several aunts and uncles.
Funeral services will be held at 2 p.m. Saturday in Stephens Funeral Home Chapel in Manning with the Rev. Tommy Burgess and the Rev. John Hucks officiating. Burial will be in St. Paul Cemetery in Summerton.
Pallbearers will be David Ardis, Jaye Derienzo, Matthew Martens, James Stukes, Ken Wells and Davis Mitchum.
Honorary pallbearers will be Josh Griffin, Jimmy Ready, Kevin Atkinson, Matthew Maye, Kevin Roberson, Benji Haney and Watson Felder.

RUTH GARRETT
Ruth Garrett, wife of Edward Boykin, died Monday, April 1, 2002, at Tuomey Regional Medical Center.
Born April 30, 1927, in Laurens, she was a daughter of the late Charles Irby and Sarah Irby. She was raised in and attended school in Laurens. In the early 1950s, she moved to Washington, D.C. In 1954, she moved to Brooklyn, N.Y., where she lived for 30 years. She attended nursing school in New York and became a licensed practical nurse. In 1979, she moved to Philadelphia, where she met and married her husband. In 1998, she and her husband moved to Sumter.
Survivors besides her husband of the home include a daughter, Genise Clark of Virginia Beach, Va.; a brother, Charles Irby Jr.; two grandchildren, Stephanie Clark of Fort Washington, Md., and Justin Wallace of Virginia Beach; and a number of nieces and nephews.
She was preceded in death by a son, Bennie Earl Garrett; and a brother, Carl Irby.
Funeral services will be held at 10 a.m. Saturday at Palmer Memorial Chapel, 304 S. Main St., with the Rev. Dr. James Blassingame officiating. Burial will be in Evergreen Memorial Park. Palmer Memorial Chapel Inc. of Sumter is in charge of arrangements.
SILAS GRANT
COLUMBIA — Silas “Sye” Grant, 78, husband of Rheatis Robinson Grant, died Tuesday, April 2, 2002, at Dorn Veterans Medical Center.
Born Oct. 17, 1923, in Sumter County, he was a son of the late James Grant and Evelyn Sanders Grant. He attended Sumter County and New York public schools. He furthered his education in electrical engineering and tailoring. In his youth, he became a member of Hopewell Missionary Baptist Church, where he served faithfully in a number of areas until his health failed. He served in the U.S. Army and received a number of decorations and citations and was honorably discharged. In 1947, he married Rheatis Robinson. He was a civil service employee for 35 years with the U.S. Air Force at Shaw Air Force Base as a supervisor with the 363rd Supply Squadron until his retirement.
Survivors besides his wife of 55 years include a son, James Nathaniel Grant of Newark, N.J.; four daughters, Bernice Johnson of Arverne, N.Y., Gwen Grant of Brooklyn, N.Y., Audrey Price of Montgomery, Ala., and Linda Regina Grant of Orange, N.J.; a brother, George Robinson of Babylon, N.Y.; a sister, Henrietta Henderson of New Bern, N.C.; two adopted children, Elouise Aiken and Percy Weatherington; two godchildren, LaVerne Echols and Samuel Sargent; seven grandchildren; three great-grandchildren; thee stepgrandchildren; and four great-stepgrandchildren.
He was preceded in death by a twin brother, Paul Grant; two additional brothers, Marion and Thomas Grant; and three sisters, Blanche Grant, Mary Robinson and Virginia Jeter.
Funeral services will be held at 2 p.m. Saturday at Hopewell Missionary Baptist Church, 3285 Peach Orchard Road (S.C. 441), Dalzell, with the Rev. Dr. L.W. Walker Sr., pastor, officiating, assisted by the Rev. Anthony Taylor, the Rev. L.W. Williams, pastor D.L. Grant, pastor Evan D. Gray Sr. and pastor Marion Davis. Burial will be in Evergreen Memorial Park on Guignard Drive.

NEW ZION — Frank A. Kennedy, 59, died Tuesday, April 2, 2002, at Clarendon Memorial Hospital in Manning.
Born on Jan. 1, 1943, in the New Zion section of Clarendon County, he was the son of Carrie Tomlin Kennedy and the late Willie Kennedy Sr. He was educated at Walker-Gamble School in New Zion. He joined Howard Chapel AME Church at an early age. He was a former employee of Dreher Meat Co. of Baltimore.
Survivors besides his mother include a son, Frank Kennedy Jr. of Baltimore; a stepson, James Jr. Young of New Zion; four daughters, Darlene Kennedy of Columbia, Rosa Dee Dee Evans and her husband Derric of New Zion, Linda Kennedy and Carrie Kennedy, both of Baltimore; four brothers, Sunny Kennedy and his wife Irene, of Baltimore, William A. Kennedy and Anthony Kennedy of New Zion and Marshall Kennedy of Greenville; four sisters, Inez Pouge and Flossie M. Makell, both of Baltimore, Pearl Cousar of Sardinia and Cora Wheeler of Turbeville; and three grandchildren.
He was preceded in death by six brothers, Lee, Henry, Willis, Willie Jr., Harmon and Eugene Kennedy; and two sisters, Ophelia Kennedy and Betha Bennett.
Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m. Saturday at Howard Chapel AME Church, Old Manning Road, New Zion, with the Rev. Edward Roberts, pastor, officiating. The casket will be placed in the church at 10 a.m.

MANNING — Lorye Daney McCants, 75, died Tuesday, April 2, 2002, at Tuomey Regional Medical Center in Sumter.
Born May 14, 1926, in Clarendon County, she was a daughter of the late Mr. Flager and Mrs. Carrie Hilton Daney. She received her education in the public schools of Clarendon County and graduated from the Manning Training School. She received a degree in computer programming from Midlands Technical College in Columbia. She worked as a teacher aide with the McCants Elementary School in Columbia. In her youth, she joined Cypress Fork AME Church in Alcolu, where she served faithfully until she moved to Columbia and united with the Francis Burns U.M. Church and served as a Sunday School teacher. She later moved back to Alcolu and joined the Manning Church of Christ.
Survivors include a son, Gary McCants and his wife, Sharon, of Wilmington, N.C.; five brothers, Joe L. Daney and James Daney, both of Baltimore, Christopher H. Daney and his wife, Barbara, of Manning, and Glenwood Daney and Earl Daney, both of Alcolu; eight sisters, Mable Blackwell and her husband, Howard, of Baltimore, Sylvester Brown and her husband, Wayne, and Evelyn Davis, all of Alcolu, Pearl Dixon of Philadelphia, Eva Margaret Blackwell and her husband, Julian, of Newport News, Va., Jo Ann Daney, Priscilla Small and her husband, Gary, of Atlanta and Gussie Scott and her husband, Ed, of Maryland; and an adopted brother, Melvin Daney and his wife, Chandra, of Atlanta.
She was preceded in death by a son, Jeffrey McCants.
Funeral services will be held at 11:30 a.m. Saturday at Cypress Fork AME Church in Alcolu with pastor Leroy Green and the Revs. Halvert Tucker and Leroy T. James officiating. Burial will be in the church cemetery.

LONG BEACH, N.Y. — Shirley “Ellen” Ragin Nelson, 55, died Sunday, March 31, 2002, at Long Beach Medical Center in Long Beach.
Born Sept. 19, 1946, in Summerton, Clarendon County, she was a daughter of Mamie King Ragin and the late Thomas Ragin. She was a 1964 graduate of Scott’s Branch High School. She continued her education at Royal Business College in New York, where she received her degree in business administration. In her youth, she was a member of Taw Caw Baptist Church and in later years she reinstated her membership. She was employed as a legal secretary.
Survivors besides her mother include a son, Eric Nelson of Central Islip, N.Y.; a daughter, Constance Nelson of Jamaica, N.Y.; a brother, Luke Ragin of New Rochelle, N.Y.; four sisters, Clara W. Lawson of Miami, Fla., Thomasene Ragin-Ali, Arlene R. Washington and Mamie R. Wright, all of Summerton; and three grandchildren.
She was preceded in death by a brother, Harold Ragin.
Funeral services will be held at 2 p.m. Saturday at Taw Caw Missionary Baptist Church in Summerton with the Rev. Dr. William T. Johnson officiating. Burial will be in the church cemetery.
