ALCOLU — David Brown, 79, husband of Helen Williams Brown, died Sunday, May 12, 2002, at Tuomey Regional Medical Center in Sumter.
Born in Sumter County, he was a son of the late Joe and Eva Sharp Brown.
The family will receive friends at the home of his brother James Brown Sr. and his wife, Robertha Harrison Brown, 1084 Sharp Lane, Alcolu.
Services will be announced by Samuels Funeral Home LLC of Manning.

ABBIE C. DAWSON
Abbie Curtis Dawson, 79, wife of Miles Dawson Jr., died Sunday, May 12, 2002, at Tuomey Regional Medical Center in Sumter.
Born Sept. 28, 1922, in Horatio, she was a daughter of the late Sylvia Capers Curtis and Ezekiel Curtis.
The family will receive friends at the home of her daughter, Olivia Morant, at 126 Briarcliff Mobile Home Park, Dalzell.
Services will be announced by James Funeral Home Inc.

INEZ CODE
BRONX, N.Y. — Inez Code, widow of Otis Singleton, died Friday, May 10, 2002, at Calvry Hospital in Bronx, N.Y.
She was born Feb. 23, 1947, in Wedgefield.
Services will be announced by James Funeral Home Inc. of Sumter.

JAMES C. BROWN
FLORENCE — James Cornwell “Son” Brown died Friday, May 10, 2002, at Carolina Hospital in Florence.
Born Jan. 1, 1910, in Mayesville, he was a son of the late David and Mattie Eaddy Brown. He was a former member of Brown Chapel Baptist Church in Sumter.
Survivors include two brothers, Woodrow Brown of New York and Joseph Brown of New Jersey; and a sister, Janie Gardner of Sumter.
He was preceded in death by a brother, David Brown; and three sisters, Julia Brown Swinton, Maybell Brown and Annie Mae Brand.
Funeral services will be held at 2 p.m. Tuesday at Palmer Memorial Chapel with the Rev. Dr. Marion H. Newton Sr., pastor of Jehovah Missionary Baptist Church, officiating. Burial will be in Beulah AME Church cemetery in Mayesville.
The funeral procession will leave at 1 p.m. from the home of his sister, Janie Gardner, 20 Murphy St., Sumter.
The family will receive friends at the home of Janie Gardner.
Palmer Memorial Chapel Inc. of Sumter is in charge of arrangements.

FRED R. SMITH
Fred Rollins Smith, 63, husband of Judy Morris Smith, died Saturday, May 11, 2002, at Tuomey Regional Medical Center of Sumter.
Born in Sumter, he was a son of the late T.C. and Pearl Rollings Smith. He was a U.S. Army veteran, serving during the Vietnam era, and was a retired field technician for State Educational Television. He attended the Green Acres Assembly in Sumter.
Survivors beside his wife of 40 years include two sons, Gregg Smith and his wife, Debbie, of Myrtle Beach and Todd Smith of Sumter; a brother, Charles L. Smith of Charleston; two sisters, Pauline Stafford of Sumter and Ann Walls of Hampton Va.; three grandchildren, Christopher, Ashley and Patrick Smith.
He was preceded in death by his brother, T.C. Smith Jr.
A funeral service will be held at 11 a.m. Tuesday in the chapel of Bullock Funeral Home with the Revs. Donnie Collins, Al Sims and Rev. Buddy Griffith officiating. Burial will be in Evergreen Memorial Park Cemetery.
Pallbearers will be Mark Tesinair, Greg Wilt, William Prescott, Cleveland Hill, Howard Owens and Kevin Snyder.
The family will receive friends from 6 to 8 p.m. today at the funeral home and other times at the home on Greenville Circle.
Memorials may be sent to Green Acres Assembly of God, 537 Lewis Road, Sumter, SC 29150.
Bullock Funeral Home of Sumter is in charge of arrangements.

CAROLYN B. WESCOTT
Carolyn Belle Wescott, 74, widow of Herman Lyle “Bud” Wescott Jr., died Sunday, May 12, 2002, at Tuomey Regional Medical Center.
Born in Blackville, she was a daughter of the late James Belle and Evelyn Belle Brutsch. She was a member of Grace Baptist Church and a former member of Crosswell Baptist Church. She was a retired nurse, having been employed by Dr. Harry Davis, Dr. Jack Rhame, Sumter Cut Rate Medical Supply and Sumter Cut Rate Drug Store.
Survivors include two sons, Herman Lyle “Buddy” Wescott III and his wife, Phyllis, of Sumter and James Robert Wescott and his wife, Kay, of Irmo; a sister, Louise Dossey of Sumter and five grandchildren, Herman Lyle Wescott IV, Phillip Wescott and William Wescott, all of Sumter, and Drew Wescott and Kristin Wescott, both of Irmo.
Funeral services will be held at 2 p.m. Tuesday in the chapel of Elmore-Hill-McCreight Funeral Home with Dr. James Chandler officiating. Burial will be in Evergreen Memorial Park Cemetery.
Honorary pallbearers will be Dr. Allen Bruner, Dr. Harry Davis and Dr. Jack Rhame.
The family will receive friends from 6 to 8 p.m. today at Elmore-Hill-McCreight Funeral Home and other times at the home, 270 Idle Lake Road.
Memorials may be made to Grace Baptist Church, 219 W. Calhoun St., Sumter, SC 29150, or to Crosswell Baptist Church, 604 Mathis St., Sumter, SC 29150.

MARIE R. EVANS
Marie R. Evans, 97, died Tuesday, June 4, 2002, at NHC Healthcare Center.
She was born Dec. 14, 1904, in Sumter County.
The family will receive friends at the home, 19 Cleveland St. Services will be announced by Community Funeral Home of Sumter.

JOHN A. MCCUTCHEN
BISHOPVILLE — John A. McCutchen, 81, husband of Irene Thames McCutchen, died Wednesday, June 5, 2002, at Carolina Pines Regional Medical Center in Hartsville.
Born in Lee County, he was a son of the late John A. McCutchen III and Allie Fraser Anderson McCutchen.
He was a lifetime member and Elder of Hepzibah Presbyterian Church and was owner of Sunnydale Farm in Bishopville. Survivors besides his wife include: two daughters, Mari Lu Grooms of Conway and Judith Simpson of Columbia; a son, Buddy McCutchen of Bishopville; three sisters, Jane Green, Mary Caines and Louise Boulineau; 10 grandchildren and two great-grandchildren.
He was preceded in death by a son, Johnny McCutchen. Funeral services will be held at 2 p.m. Friday in the Chapel of the Hancock-Elmore-Hill Funeral Home with the Rev. Render Caines officiating. Burial will be in the Hepzibah Presbyterian Church Cemetery.
The family will receive friends from 6 to 8 p.m. today at the funeral home. Hancock-Elmore-Hill Funeral Home of Bishopville is in charge of arrangements.

HILLIARD REMBERT
Hilliard Rembert, 70, died Wednesday, June 5, 2002, at Tuomey Regional Medical Center.
Born Feb. 19, 1932, in Sumter, he was a son of the late Johnny and Mary Bracey Rembert.
The family will receive friends at the home, 1040 Farmers Circle. Services will be announced by Job’s Mortuary Inc. of Sumter.

DELORES SANDERS
Delores Sanders, 44, wife of Nathaniel Sanders, died Tuesday, June 4, 2002, at Tuomey Regional Medical Center. Born June 22, 1957, in Sumter, she was a daughter of Eugene Howard and the late Lucille Green Howard.
Services will be announced by Job’s Mortuary Inc. of Sumter.

JESSICA C. CHOMKO
REMBERT — Jessica Colleen Chomko, 20, died Tuesday, June 4, 2002, from injuries received in an automobile accident.
Born in San Antonio, Texas, she was a daughter of Michael William Chomko and Jacquelyn Scruggs Young. She was a member of Dalzell United Methodist Church. She was a graduate of Thomas Sumter Academy and was a current student at Central Carolina Technical College. She was employed as a rider/trainer with Red Bank Equine Therapy Center.
Survivors include her father and stepmother, Itaska Chomko, of Rembert; her mother and stepfather, Lawrence Young, of Dalzell; maternal grandmother, Colleen Hibbard of Cornelius, N.C.; paternal grandfather, William Edward Chomko of Walnut Port, Pa.; paternal grandmother, Sandra Hevalow of Lancaster, Pa.; paternal great-grandmothers, Alice Remaley of Lancaster, Pa. and Veronica Chomko of Walnut Port, Pa.; and her fiance, Christopher Amerson of Bishopville.
Funeral services will be held at 10 a.m. Friday in the chapel of Elmore-Hill-McCreight Funeral Home with the Rev. Walker Toney officiating. Burial will be at 4 p.m. in Golden Valley United Methodist Church Cemetery in Rutherford County, N.C. with the Rev. Walker Toney, the Rev. Freida Hobson and the Rev. Jesse Carswell officiating.
Pat Nelligan, Blake Williams, Edward Hodge, Scott Hodge, Ronald Hunt and Aubrey Hand will serve as pallbearers. The family will receive friends from 6 to 8 p.m. today at the funeral home.

PATRICIA W. GARRICK
NEESES — Patricia Williams Garrick, wife of Barney Foreman Garrick Sr., died Wednesday, June 5, 2002, at Regional Medical Center in Orangeburg.
Born in Springfield, she was a daughter of the late Wade Hampton Williams and Lessie Estelle Cooper Williams. She was a graduate of Springfield High School. She was a member of Bethany Baptist Church.
Survivors besides her husband include two sons, Victor Wade Garrick of Neeses and Timothy Randolph Garrick of Simpsonville; two daughters, Mrs. James L. (Patricia) Barwick of Pinewood and Mrs. Wayne (Brenda) Felkel of Batesburg; two brothers, Sam Williams of Orangeburg and Barney Williams of Lexington; two sisters, Estelle W. Pender of Springfield and Alma W. Sutcliffe of Orangeburg; 16 grandchildren; and 12 great-grandchildren.
She was preceded in death by a son, B.F. Garrick Jr.
Funeral services will be held at 2 p.m. Friday at Bethany Baptist Church in Bolentown with the Rev. Henry Cooper and the Rev. Dwight Morgan officiating. Burial will be in Memorial Park Cemetery in Orangeburg.
The family will receive friends from 7 to 9 p.m. today at the funeral home and other times at the home of Mr. and Mrs. Victor Garrick, 1125 Todd Creek Road, Neeses.
Memorials may be made to Bethany Baptist Church building fund, McNab Road, Bolentown.

G. HANEY MITCHUM SR.
MANNING — Glen Haney Mitchum Sr., 70, husband of Betty “Bootsie” Mitchum, died Tuesday, June 4, 2002, at Tuomey Regional Medical Center.
Born Aug. 22, 1931, in Bethera, he was a son of the late Enoch Lanier Mitchum Sr. and Lucille Litchfield Mitchum. He attended Macodonia public schools. He was of the Baptist faith. He was retired from General Telephone Co. with 41 years of service. He was an avid hunter and president of the Carolina Hunting Club of Foreston. He was a U.S. Army Korean veteran.
Survivors besides his wife of Manning include two sons, Glen H. Mitchum Jr. and his wife, Dale, and Robert Dean Mitchum and his wife, Donna, all of Manning; a daughter, Sheila M. Holladay and her husband, Bert, of McCormick; two sisters, Carolyn Wildes and her husband, Chris, of Andrews and Kathryn Whitesel of Fredonia, N.Y.; a brother, Donald K. Mitchum of Bethera; three granddaughters, Ashley Mitchum, Brooke Hilton and Tabitha Hilton; and two grandsons, Glen H. “Hane” Mitchum III and Brad Pelfrey.
He was preceded in death by three brothers, E.L., Maxie and Milton Mitchum.
Funeral services will be held at 4 p.m. Friday in the chapel of Elmore-Hill-McCreight Funeral Home with the Rev. Danny Bridges and the Rev. David Richardson officiating. Burial will be in Clarendon Memorial Gardens in Manning.
The family will receive friends from 6 to 8 p.m. today at the funeral home and other times at the home, 467 Manchester Drive, Manning.

MARY S. NEW
BISHOPVILLE — Mary Simon New, 79, widow of Robert New, died Sunday, June 2, 2002, at Tuomey Regional Medical Center in Sumter.
She was born March 2, 1923, in Lee County. She attended Lee County public schools.
Survivors include a grandson, Lynburg Simon of San Diego, Calif.; two sisters, Rosa Durant and her husband, Henry, of Wisacky and Luvenia Ingram of Newport News, Va.; an aunt, Emma Joe of Bishopville; a number of nieces, one with whom she lived with, Sadie C. McDowell; and a number of nephews. Funeral services will be held at 1 p.m. Friday at New Zion AME Church in Wisacky with the Rev. Franklin Spears officiating. Burial will be in New Zion AME Church Memorial Gardens. The casket will be placed in the church at noon. The funeral procession will leave at 12:30 p.m. from the home, 50 John Wesley Road, Bishopville.
The family will receive friends at the home.

DORIS F. THOMAS
Doris Meta Newman Folsom Thomas, 77, died Wednesday, June 5, 2002, at Tuomey Regional Medical Center.
Born in Sumter, she was a daughter of the late Fred A. Newman and Meta Newman Newman. She was a member of Concord Presbyterian Church and a member of the Presbyterian Women of the Church. She was retired owner and operator of Folsom’s Grocery Store and was a member of American Legion Post No. 15 Ladies Auxiliary. She was first married to the late Stephen Lawrence Folsom Jr. and then later to Claude Thomas Jr.
Survivors besides her husband include a daughter, Dale Folsom Richardson and her husband, Gregg, of Sumter; a sister, Virginia Newman Powers of Sumter; three grandchildren, Arthur Gregg Richardson Jr., Stephen Folsom Richardson and Meta Caroline Richardson She was preceded in death by a sister, Madlyn Newman Waynick; and two brothers, Clyde F. Newman Sr. and David E. Newman.
Funeral services will be held at 10 a.m. Saturday at Concord Presbyterian Church with the Rev. William Albert officiating. Burial will be in the church cemetery.
Larry Lasseigne, Carroll Newman, Buddy Rivers, Terry Squires, George Waynick Jr. and Harry Peebles will serve as pallbearers. The family will receive friends from 6 to 8 p.m. Friday at the funeral home and other times at the home. Memorials may be made to Concord Presbyterian Church Family Life Center Fund, 3350 E. Brewington Road, Sumter, SC 29153. Elmore-Hill-McCreight Funeral Home of Sumter is in charge of arrangements.

DIANNE S. KENNEDY
TIMMONSVILLE — Dianne Saverance Kennedy, 56, died Tuesday, June 4, 2002, in a Florence hospital after a long illness.
Born in Timmonsville, she was a daughter of the late Marion Thomas “Kitty” and Mamie Lockhart Saverance.
She was educated in the Timmonsville schools and Carolina College of Commerce. She was a dispatcher and Clerk of Court for the town of Timmonsville from 1990 to 1998. She was a member of Cartersville Baptist Church.
Survivors include: her husband, J. Larry Kennedy; a son, Michael S. Kennedy; a brother, Tony (Betty) Saverance; and two grandsons, Michael Scott Kennedy, Jr. and Dustin Tyler Kennedy, all of Timmonsville.
Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m. Friday in Cartersville Baptist Church. Burial will be in Byrd Cemetery directed by Layton-Anderson Funeral Home.
The family will receive friends from 7 to 9 p.m. today at the funeral home. Memorials may be made to the Timmonsville Rescue Squad, P.O. Box 9, Timmonsville, SC 29161 or to Cartersville Baptist Church, 647 S. Cartersville Hwy., Timmonsville, SC 29161.

Nell Owens Williams, 82, widow of Harold Otis Williams, died Wednesday, June 5, 2002, in Bainbridge, Ga.
