BISHOPVILLE — Rosetta Johnson Mickens, 83, widow of James “JC” Mickens, died Sunday, June 2, 2002m, at McLeod Regional Medical Center in Florence.
She was born Nov. 26, 1919, in Lee County, and educated in the public schools of Lee County.
Survivors include: two sons, James Mickens of Teaneck, N.J. and O’Donnell (Helen) Mickens of Bishopville; two daughters, Cynthia (James) York of Bishopville and June (Wendell) Dailey of Ocala, Fla.; a special niece, Ethel Farmer; a special cousin, Mamie White of Durham, N.C.; a sister, Katie (Josh) Wilson; eight grandchildren; and two great-grandchildren. Wake services will be held from 7 to 8 p.m. Friday at Boatwright Funeral Home.
Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m. Saturday at New Hope Baptist Church in the Lucknow section of Lee County. The Rev. W.B. Johnson will officiate. Burial will be in the church cemetery.
The casket will be placed in the church at 10:30 a.m. Saturday. The funeral procession will leave from the home, 506 Donald Davis Road in Bishopville.

Mickey Gene Oxford, 59, husband of 27 years to Candace Rae Antle Oxford, died Tuesday, June 4, 2002, at Tuomey Regional Medical Center.
Born in Chico, Ca. he was a son of the late Eugene Deloys Oxford and Virginia Alleman Oxford. He served in the U.S. Air Force for 28 years and retired in 1989 from Shaw Air Force Base as 1st Sgt. of the 363rd Component Repair Squadron. He was a member of the Disabled American Veterans.
Survivors besides his wife include: two sons, Lt. Scot E. Oxford of Lakenheath, England and David L. Oxford of Austin, Tx.; a daughter, Cami L. Oxford of Rock Hill, S.C.; two brothers, Nicholas Oxford and his wife Sheri of Albuquerque, N.M. and Danny Oxford and his wife Patsy of Salinas, Ca.; six sisters, Caryl Scoggins of Ceres, Ca., Donna Arias and her husband Tony of Port Orchard, Wa., Linda Bertolotti and her husband Nick of Turlock, Ca., Alice McInnis and her husband Robert of Salinas, Ca., Sherry Balesteri of Ceres, Ca., and Judy Heis and her husband Virgil of Orland, Ca.; a grandchild, Ian Oxford; and several nieces and nephews.
Funeral services with full military honors will be held at 11 a.m. Friday at Bullock Funeral Home Chapel with the Rev. Jim Grasty officiating.

Deacon Jim Ed Farmer, 74, husband of Evelina Peterson Farmer, died Tuesday, June 4, 2002, at Mariner Health of Sumter East.
Born April 23, 1928, in the Home Branch section of Clarendon County, he was a son of the late Jim Farmer and Carrie Major Farmer.
He was educated at Paxville Elementary School, graduated from Lincoln High Adult Education in 1968 and attended Sumter Area Technical College. He was a member of Mt. Zero Missionary Baptist Church where he served as church pianist, on the gospel choir, senior choir, deacon board, and was president of the Black River Sunday School Convention for Clarendon County Church School. He retired from Georgia-Pacific in 1980. He was past secretary of AFL-CIO, secretary for many years of the Corinthian Lodge FAAYM #200, secretary of the Free and Accepted Ancient York Masons Prince Hall Origin, a member of Worthy Patrons of Martha Chapter #12 Eastern Star Chapter, and a member of the Sumter Chapter National Federation of the Blind.
Survivors besides his wife of the home include: a son, Jimmy B. Farmer of Sumter; four daughters, Esther Farmer-Judon of Sumter, Dr. Harriett Farmer Kargbo of Cheverly, Md., Evetta Farmer Gregg of Columbia, S.C. and Kastine Donnett Farmer of Salisbury, Md.; two brothers, Loman David Farmer of Paxville and Abraham Pinkney Farmer of Sumter; three sisters, Ida F. Harvin and her husband Thomas of Paxville, Blanche F. Smith, and Rosa F. Brown, both of Columbia, S.C.; and two grandchildren.
Funeral services will be held at 2 p.m. Friday at Mt. Zero Missionary Baptist Church, Paxville Hwy. 261 in Manning. The Rev. Henry Presley, pastor, will officiate, assisted by the Rev. Cokley Richburg and the Rev. Wesley Crawford. Burial will be in the churchyard cemetery.
The casket will be placed in the church at 1 p.m. Friday. Pallbearers will be the Masonic Lodge #200. Honorary pallbearers will be deacons of Mt. Zero Missionary Baptist Church.

LYNCHBURG — Christine Carter, 55, wife of Jacob Carter, died Sunday, June 2, 2002, at her home.
Born July 19, 1946, in Lynchburg, she was a daughter of the late Haun Wilson and Pearl Kennedy. She attended Lee County public schools. She was a member of Warren Chapel United Methodist Church in South Lynchburg, where she was a member of the United Methodist Women and a member of the kitchen aid committee. She was employed at the Lynchburg-Elliott Child Care Center until her retirement.
Survivors besides her husband include four sons, Gary Carter and his wife, Annie, and Jacob Carter Jr. and his wife, Donna, both of Bishopville, Tyrone Carter and Christopher Carter, both of Lynchburg; three brothers, George Durant, Thomas Kennedy and Calvin Kennedy, all of Lynchburg; three sisters, Bessie Lee Benbow and Rebecca Prince, both of Lynchburg, and Emma Jackson of Jacksonville, N.C.; and six grandchildren.
Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m. Saturday at Warren Chapel United Methodist Church in South Lynchburg with the Rev. John Sellers officiating. Burial will be in Hawkins Cemetery.

Sireatha “Ree” Cooper Edwards, 73, wife of Longfellow Edwards, died Monday, June 3, 2002, at Regency Hospital in Florence.
Born April 8, 1929, in Sardis, she was a daughter of the late Eugene and Alma Granderson Cooper. In her youth, she was raised by her Grandma Mitchell and the late Willie and Ida McKnight. She spent her teen-age years with her aunt, Idella Sanders, in Philadelphia, Pa. She attended Sumter public schools and received her high school diploma from William Penn High School in Philadelphia. She received a bachelor of science degree in elementary education from Allen University in Columbia. She was a member of the AKA sorority. She was employed by Sumter School District 2 as an elementary school teacher for 36 years. She was an active member of Asbury United Methodist Church where she served as treasurer. She organized many youth groups in the community and was instrumental in securing the Shiloh Community Center in Shiloh.
Survivors besides her husband include a son, Gerard Edwards of Atlanta, Ga.; a daughter, Alma Montgomery and her husband, Tracy, of Lynchburg; six grandchildren; and a number of nephews and nieces.
She was preceded in death by five brothers, Pete Cooper, Leroy Cooper, Keith McKnight, Harold McKnight and Melvin McKnight; and three sisters, Gracie M. Byrd, Ada M. Spann and Pearl M. Lewis.
Funeral services will be held at 2 p.m. Saturday at Asbury United Methodist Church, Lynchburg, with the Rev. James Cannion, pastor, officiating. Burial will be in Goodman Cemetery, Lynchburg.
The casket will be placed in the church at 1 p.m.

MANNING — Howard John Emerson, 84, beloved husband of 62 years to Margery Perkins Emerson, died Thursday, June 6, 2002, at Tuomey Regional Medical Center in Sumter.
Born Feb. 12, 1918, in Hornell, N.Y., he was a son of the late John T. Emerson and Elizabeth O’Neil Emerson. He was a 1936 graduate of Hornell High School. He was a volunteer fireman in Canisteo, N.Y., a Boy Scout and Eagle leader, a member of the Moose Lodge in Hornell, N.Y., a volunteer at the blood bank and the Clarendon County Striped Bass Festival, and an avid golfer and gardener. He retired from Erie Lackawana Railroad after 42 years of service.
Survivors besides his wife of Manning include two daughters, Theresa Terrell and Janet Goodwin of Manning; a sister, Mildred McGinnes of Shortsville, N.Y.; and six grandchildren, 11 great-grandchildren and two great-great-grandchildren.
He was preceded in death by a son, Rodney Emerson.
Private memorial services were held Thursday afternoon. Burial will be in Canisteo Hillside Cemetery in New York.

MANNING — Wallace Omsby “Wally” Hilton Jr., 57, died Thursday, June 6, 2002, at his home in Manning.
Born July 1, 1944, in Kingstree, he was a son of the late Wallace Omsby Hilton and Mallie Gibbons Hilton. He attended the University of South Carolina. He was a member of Clarendon Baptist Church in Alcolu. He was an insurance agent.
Survivors include a sister, Mary Wallace Johnson and her husband, Terry, of Augusta, Ga.; a nephew, Terrell Johnson of Atlanta; a niece, Caroline Johnson Champion and her husband, Ernest Maxwell Champion IV, of St. Simons Island, Ga.; and a great-nephew, Ernest Maxwell Champion V.
Graveside services will be held at 12:30 p.m. Saturday in Manning Cemetery with the Rev. Dan Helvey officiating.

Born in Lee County, he was a son of the late Willie James Hopkins and Mammie E. Sutton Hopkins. He was a member of Cedar Creek Baptist Church, where he served as a deacon. He was a retired supervisor with Carolina Furniture Works. He was a U.S. Army World War II veteran.
Survivors besides his wife of Bishopville include a daughter, Dyane Layton and her husband, Ronny, of Manning; a sister, Willie Mae Gardner of Cayce; a brother, James E. Hopkins of Bishopville; four grandchildren, Michael Layton of Lynchburg, Tammy Rickenbacker and Joel Hopkins, both of Holly Hill, and Chris Layton of Summerton; five great-grandchildren; and a daughter-in-law, Phyllis Hopkins of Holly Hill.
