CORA L. BARFIELD
Cora Lee Barfield, 66, of 930 E. Fulton St., wife of Curtis Barfield, died Wednesday, June 12, 2002, at Tuomey Regional Medical Center.
Born in Williamsburg County, she was a daughter of the late Furman Hickman and Della DuBose Hickman. She was retired from Campbell Soup Co.
Survivors besides her husband of the home include a son, Curtis Calvin Barfield of Sumter; five daughters, Evelyn Roquemore, Judy Battilana and Patty Lowery, all of Sumter, Lynn Evans of Alcolu and Eloise McKenzie of Kingstree; a brother, Melvin Hickman of Manning; a sister, Cari Mae Altmon of Lynchburg; an adopted brother, Mitchell Martin of Coward; 12 grandchildren; and six great-grandchildren.
Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m. Friday at Smithville Evangelical Baptist Church with the Revs. Freddie Gaymon and Mike Baynai officiating. Burial will be in Sumter Cemetery.
The family will receive friends at the home.
Memorials may be made to Smithville Evangelical Baptist Church, care of Jimmy Baker, 225 Pinecrest Drive, Sumter, SC 29153.

MILDRED S. BRANDENBURG
ST. MATTHEWS — Mildred S. Brandenburg, 89, widow of James R. Brandenburg Jr., died Monday, June 10, 2002, at the Methodist Oaks in Orangeburg.
Born Dec. 12, 1912, in Davis Station, she was a daughter of the late Evander Gray Stukes and Placidia Shorter Stukes. She graduated from Manning High School and Winthrop University. She was a retired schoolteacher, having taught in public high schools and at Lander University. She was a member of St. Matthews Presbyterian Church.
Survivors include a sister, Jacquelyn M. McNeill of Columbia; six nephews, Bobby Stukes, Marion Stukes, Robert Stukes, E.G. Stukes, Tim Stukes and Mickey Plowden; and three nieces, Thomasine Martin, Margaret Blascak, and Olivia Rose.
She was preceded in death by two brothers, Thomas E. Stukes Sr. and Robert J. Stukes Sr; two sisters, Edith Plowden and Maxine Edwards; and a stepmother, Mary Richburg Stukes.
Funeral services will be held at 10 a.m. today in Amos Memorial Chapel in the Sheffield Building of the Methodist Oaks in Orangeburg with the Revs. Craig Pipkin and Kenneth Shrawder officiating. Burial will be in St. Paul’s Methodist Church cemetery in St. Matthews.
Bobby Stukes, Marion Stukes, E.G. Stukes, Tim Stukes, Marnie Moore and Mickey Plowden will serve as pallbearers.
The family will receive friends from 6 to 8 p.m. today at the funeral home.
Memorials may be made to St. Matthews Presbyterian Church or to Bethlehem United Methodist Church in Davis Station.

CLARENCE BROOKS
Clarence “Drummer” Brooks Sr., 71, of 1570 N. Kings Highway, widower of Maggie O. Brooks, died Monday, June 10, 2002, at his home.
Born Oct. 10, 1930, in Sumter, he was a son of the late Thomas and Geresa Miller Brooks. He attended Sumter County public schools and was self-employed.
Survivors include two sons, Clarence Brooks Jr. of Sumter and Kenneth Brooks of Atlanta; three daughters, Sandra Johnson of Atlanta, Karen Brooks of Irventon, N.J., and Genina Lewis of Rochester, N.Y.; three brothers, Loman Brooks, Willie K. Brooks and James Brooks, all of Sumter; seven grandchildren; and a great-grandchild.
He was preceded in death by four brothers, Albert, William, Edward and Thomas Brooks; and a sister, Louise Bradley.
Funeral services will be held at 3:30 p.m. Friday at Rafting Creek Baptist Church in Rembert with Dr. Charles H. Davis, pastor, and the Revs. Willie Dennis, Charmaine Ragin and Ellie Palmer officiating. Burial will be in the church cemetery.
The family will receive friends at the home.

JOANNIE R. CLACK
SUCHES, Ga. — Joannie Ray Clack, 47, wife of Paul Clack, died Sunday, June 9, 2002.
Born in Sumter, she was a daughter of Miriam Hall Hodges and the late William L. Ray. She graduated from Whitmire High School and Columbia Commercial College.
Survivors besides her husband of Suches and mother of Sumter include a daughter, Chris Mitchum Vandevander of Sumter; four sisters, Sharon Jeanie Ray Privett of Black Rock, Ark., Jackie Ray Wingard of Turbeville, Jane Ray Townsend of Loganville, Ga. and Jill Ray Schreiber of Sumter; a grandson, Jordan B. Vandevander of Sumter; three nephews; and seven nieces.
Funeral services will be held at 2 p.m. Saturday in the funeral home chapel. Burial will be in Whitmire Cemetery.
The family will receive friends from 1 to 2 p.m. prior to the service at the funeral home, and other times at the home of her uncle, Carlton Hal, 252 Colonial Drive, Whitmire.
Gray Funeral Home of Whitmire is in charge of arrangements.

NORBERT P. EDWARDS
Norbert Peter “Eddie-Dread” Edwards, husband of Rosalind Edwards-Luke died Monday, June 10, 2001, at Palmetto Richland Memorial Hospital in Columbia.
Born June 5, 1948, in Mason Hall, Tobago, West Indies, he was a son of Merilda Edwards and the late Robert Luke. He attended Tobago public schools. He worked as an auto body repairman with Bundy Auto Sales and later opened his own body shop.
Survivors besides his wife of Graniteville and mother include a son, Peter Edwards-Luke of the home; seven brothers, Lawrence Edwards and Bob Hope Edwards, both of Tobago, and Granville Edwards, Ashton John Edwards, Sauce Edwards, Uriel Edwards and Roland Edwards, all of Bronx, N.Y.; four sisters, Andrea Edwards, Idona Edwards, Uinesta Edwards and Deloris Edwards, all of Bronx, N.Y.; and a special friend, Renee Pringle of Mayesville.
He was preceded in death by a brother, Joey Edwards.
A memorial service will be held at 11 a.m. Friday in the funeral home chapel. Burial will be private.
The funeral procession will leave at 10:20 a.m. from the home.
A wake service will be held from 6 to 8 p.m. today at the funeral home.
The family will receive friends at the home, 301 S. Salem Ave.
Community Funeral Home of Sumter is in charge of arrangements.

JUDY R. HUMPHRIES
Judy Rinehart Humphries, 61, wife of R. Derrill Humphries, died Wednesday, June 12, 2002.
Born in Newberry, she was a daughter of Mary Alva Crumpton Rinehart and the late P.E. Rinehart. She was an employee of the U.S. Department of Agriculture and a member of Epting Memorial United Methodist Church.
Survivors besides her husband and mother of Dalzell include two sons, Vincent T. Humphries of Sumter and Stanley W. Humphries and his wife, Keiko, of Conyers, Ga.; a sister, Jeanette Farmer of Greenville; and four grandchildren.
Funeral services will be held at 2 p.m. Friday at Epting Memorial United Methodist Church. Burial will be in Newberry Memorial Gardens.
The family will receive friends from 7 to 8 p.m. today at the funeral home. McSwain-Evans Funeral Home of Newberry is in charge of arrangements.

ROLAND BROWN
GEORGETOWN — Roland Brown, 57, wife of Joyce Hooks Brown, died Wednesday, June 12, 2002, at Georgetown Memorial Hospital.
Born May 15, 1945, in Georgetown County, he was a son of the late Joe Brown and Annette Wright Brown.
The family will receive friends at 8372 Choppee Road, Georgetown.
Services will be announced by Samuels Funeral Home LLC of Manning.

NORMAN ZESTER
Retired Lt. Col. Norman Zester died Sunday, June 9, 2002, at his home.
Services will be announce by Bullock Funeral Home.

HATTIE D. WALTERS
COLUMBIA — Hattie Mae Dow Walters, 73, wife of James Elliott Walters, died Thursday, June 13, 2002, at Palmetto Richland Memorial Hospital in Columbia.
Born April 2, 1929, in Davis Station, Clarendon County, she was a daughter of the late Elliott “Boy” Dow and Mamie “Plummie” Gibson Dow.
The family will receive friends at the home, 2869 Bill Davis Road, Davis Station community, Manning.
Services will be announced by Summerton Funeral Service of Summerton.

RUTH M. BARTLETTE
Ruth McLeod Bartlette, 85, widow of Joseph Thomas Bartlette, died Wednesday, June 12, 2002, at a local nursing center.
Born in Sumter, she was a daughter of the late James Wilson McLeod and Mary Anna Dawkins McLeod. She was a member of Providence Baptist Church.
Survivors include three daughters, Bettie B. Jackson and her husband, Herman D., Ginnie B. Davis and her husband, Billy L., and Judy B. Fleming and her husband, Roger, all of Sumter; six sisters, Thelma McLeod and Audrey Alford, both of Sumter, Gerry Timmons of Pinewood, Janet Trembley and Barbara Morris, both of Summerton, and Kathleen Roberson of Moncks Corner; six grandchildren, Lynn J. Falls, Thommie Ruth Jackson, Rhonda Y. Jackson, Billy L. Davis Jr., David Fleming and Heather C. Fleming; and two great-grandchildren, Anna C. Fleming and Wyatt Fleming.
She was preceded in death by two brothers, James Wilson McLeod Jr. and Pete McLeod.
Funeral services will be held at 4 p.m. today in the chapel of Elmore-Hill-McCreight Funeral Home with the Rev. Rob Pierce officiating. Burial will be in Providence Baptist Church Cemetery.
Grandsons, Billy L. Davis Jr. and David Fleming, and nephews, Gene Morris, Ken Alford, Gary Touchberry and Keith Hodge will serve as pallbearers.
The family will receive friends at the home of Mr. and Mrs. Billy L. Davis, 3775 U.S. 521 South.

BESSIE B. DANTZLER
Bessie Lou Baker Dantzler, 91, widow of Whorton H. Dantzler Sr., died Wednesday, June 12, 2002, at a local nursing center.
Born in Sumter, she was a daughter of the late Ethan Allen Baker and Martha Katherine Morris Baker. She was a member of Grace Baptist Church where she served as pianist for a number of years. She was co-owner and operator of Baker’s Bicycle Shop.
Survivors include three sons, Whorton H. Dantzler Jr. and his wife, Mary Agnes, of North Augusta, Milledge Allen Dantzler Sr. and his wife, Dot, of Sumter, and Alfred G. Dantzler of Columbia; four grandchildren, Wayne Dantzler, Nicole Channell, Al Dantzler Jr. and Lisa Gamble; and six great-grandchildren.
Graveside services will be held at 4 p.m. Saturday at Evergreen Memorial Park Cemetery with the Rev. Dr. James Chandler officiating.
The family will receive friends from 2 to 3:30 p.m. Saturday at the funeral home and other times at the home of Mr. and Mrs. Allen Dantzler, 1912 W. Oakland Ave.
Memorials may be made to Grace Baptist Church, 219 W. Calhoun St., Sumter, SC 29150.

DESMOND L. WORKMAN
ROCK HILL — Desmond Lamar Workman, 19, died Saturday, June 8, 2002, in Rock Hill.
Born June 25, 1982, in Sumter County, he was a son of Essie Wilson Workman of Sumter and Felix Nathaniel Workman Sr. of Richmond, Va. He graduated from Lakewood High School in the Class of 2000. He first attended Tennessee State University and later moved to Rock Hill, where he was enrolled as a student at York Technical College.
He was a member of New Birth Holiness Church, Sumter, where he served on the usher board and attended Sunday school.
He later affiliated himself with the Freedom Temple Ministries in Rock Hill.
Survivors besides his parents include an infant daughter, Little Miss Ziera Romel Workman; five brothers, Corey Vaughn, Terry Blanding, Quincy, Felix Jr. and Clifford Workman; eight foster brothers, Douglas Harrington, Derrick Glison, Lil-Ricky Prioleau, Sean Williams, Corey Marcus, Aaron, Tony and Anthony Amos; four sisters, Jocelyn Perkins, Felixisha Workman, Tiera and Tiana White; five foster sisters, Tempela Amos, Sharon Tomlin, Shayla Pellman, Catory Prioleau and LeSean Prioleau; a grandmother, Mary Wright; two grandfathers, Lewis Davis and Isaac Cokley; six aunts, Bessie Wilson, Marilyn Duvall Workman, Marcia Major, Geneva Murphy, Gwenevere Moody and Teresa Workman; six uncles, Bobby Wright, Hilliard Osborne, Elliott Major, Randall and Morris Workman; his foster parents, Nathan Amos and his wife, Helen, and Patricia Prioleau and her husband, Ricky; a special aunt and uncle, Hattie and Willie Wilson; his fiancee, Quanisha Meeks; his godsister, Kenyanna Howard; special friends, Doris Choice and Harry Johnson; and nieces, nephews and cousins.
He was preceded in death by his grandparents, James and Sadie Bell Wilson, and Millie G. Davis and Hilliard Workman.
The remains will be placed at 2 p.m. Saturday in the gymnasium of Lakewood High School.
Funeral services will be held at 3 p.m. at the school with the Rev. Nathan Amos, pastor of the New Birth Holiness Church officiating, assisted by the Revs. Herbert Crump, pastor of Freedom Temple Ministries in Rock Hill, Tony Amos, evangelist Maurice Wells and Peggy Rankin.
Burial will be in Mt. Moriah U.M. Church Cemetery.
The funeral procession will leave at 2 p.m. from 2781 Browningridge Drive, Sumter. The family will receive friends at that address.
Palmer Memorial Chapel Inc. is in charge of arrangements.
