EMMA H. SPRY
MANNING — Emma Lee Hankins Spry, 74, widow of Freddie Lee Spry, died Sunday, June 9, 2002, at Clarendon Memorial Hospital.
Born Oct. 8, 1927, in the Paxville community of Clarendon County, she was a daughter of the late Harold Carrie Lee Conyers Hankins and the stepdaughter of the late Timothy Richburg.
She was educated in Clarendon County public schools in Paxville. In her youth, she attended Zion Hill Baptist Church in Paxville. She was employed with Aramark Food Services in Philadelphia until she retired.
Survivors include a daughter, Carlo Peterson of Summerton; a brother, Alton Hankins of Philadelphia; three sisters, Ruth Ann Collins of Baltimore, Beulah Cole and Cassie Hill, both of Manning; four grandchildren; nine great-grandchildren; and three great-great-grandchildren.
Funeral services will be held 11 a.m. Saturday in the Hayes F. Samuels Sr. Memorial Chapel in Manning with the Rev. Annie P. Riley officiating, assisted by the Rev. Malachi Duncan.
Burial will be in the Manning Cemetery.
The family will receive friends at the home of her granddaughter, Lillie Peterson, 107 Dickson St., Manning. Samuels Funeral Home LLC of Manning is in charge of arrangements.

ISIAH FRIERSON
BISHOPVILLE — Isiah Frierson, husband of Rosa Lee Mickens Frierson, died Tuesday, June 11, 2002, at Carolina Pines Regional Medical Center in Hartsville.
Born Aug. 12, 1912, in Bishopville, he was a son of the late Joe Frierson and Lucy Wilson Frierson. He attended Lee County public schools.
He retired from Boyle Construction Company.
Survivors besides his wife include four sons, Herbert Frierson and his wife, Barbara, of Columbia, Julious Frierson and Leroy Frierson, both of Bishopville, and John Edward Frierson of Lugoff; three daughters, Rosa Mae Wilson, Mary Ryan and her husband, Clifton, all of Saginaw, Mich., and Gloria Scott of Bishopville; a granddaughter who was raised at the home, Gretta Wilson Powell; 36 grandchildren; 34 great-grandchildren; and three great-great-grandchildren.
He was preceded in death by a son, Isiah Frierson Jr.; two grandsons, James Edward Wilson and Clifton Ryan Jr.; and seven brothers.
Visitation will be held from noon to 8 p.m. today at Wilson’s Funeral Home.
Funeral services will be held 1 p.m. Saturday at Mt. Hermon Baptist Church, Bishopville.
Burial will be in Thomas Town Cemetery in Bishopville.
The remains will be placed in the church at noon. The family will receive friends at the home, 643 Scarborough St., Bishopville.
Wilson’s Funeral Home in Bishopville is in charge of arrangements.

JEFF D. BLACKWELL
SUMMERTON — Jeff David “Doc” Blackwell of 2138 Liberty Hill Road, 66, husband of Hattie Mae Hilton Blackwell, died Thursday, July 25, at his home.
Born Aug. 31, 1935, in the St. Paul community of Clarendon County, he was a son of the late Robert Blackwell and Lelia Ragin Blackwell.
The family will receive friends at the home.
Services will be announced by Summerton Funeral Service of Summerton.

BECKY A. DAVIS
SANTEE — Becky Antonieke Davis, 19, died Thursday, July 25, 2002, at Santee State Park.
Born Aug. 28, 1982, in Sumter, she was a daughter of Anthony B. Davis and Jean Wright Davis.
The family will receive friends at the home, 109 Briarcliff Mobile Home Park, Dalzell.
Services will be announced by Williams Funeral Home Inc. of Sumter.

WILLIE C. PALMER
GREENVILLE — Willie Carl Palmer, 50, died Friday, July 26, 2002, at St. Francis Hospital in Greenville.
Born April 10, 1952, in the North Santee section of Clarendon County, he was a son of the late Seward Palmer Jr. and Eliza Robinson Seward.
The family will receive friends at the home, 11 Marble St., Greenville, and other times beginning Tuesday at the home of his aunt, Wilhelmina Robinson, 4602 Dingle Pond Road, North Santee, Summerton. Services will be announced by Samuels Funeral Home LLC of Manning.

TERRELL A. WRIGHT
CHARLESTON — Terrell Antonio Wright, 13, died Friday, July 26, at the Medical University of South Carolina hospital.
He was a son of Yvette D. Wright and Shawn Wilds. The family will receive friends at the home of his maternal grandmother, Gloria G. Wright, 3521 Savannah Grove Road, Effingham.
Services will be announced by Job’s Mortuary Inc. of Sumter.

INEZ P. BRUNSON
Inez Pringle Brunson, 87, widow of Willie R. Brunson, died Tuesday, July 23, 2002, at Mariner Health of Sumter East.
Born Dec. 31, 1914, in Clarendon County, she was a daughter of the late Mitchum Pringle and Beulah Lemon Pringle Thames. She attended Clarendon County public schools and was a former member of Zion Baptist Church in Paxville. She was a member of Jehovah Missionary Baptist Church for more than 50 years, serving with the Missionary and Pastor Support Ministries.
Survivors include four sons, Deacon DeLeon T. Brunson of Sumter, Isiah Brunson and his wife, Angela, of Washington, D.C., Larry Brunson and his wife, Maxine, of New York, N.Y. and John J. Brunson of Columbia; five daughters, Willene Cocklin and her husband, James, Hattie Richburg and her husband, Clifton, Edith B. Williams, Merline Brown and her husband, Willie E., and Erlene Williams and her husband, W.A., all of Sumter; a grandson raised as a son, Pastor Ray. A Sanders of Columbia; 33 grandchildren; 42 great-grandchildren; seven great-grandchildren; and a number of nieces and nephews.
Funeral services will be held at 3 p.m. Monday at Jehovah Missionary Baptist Church with the Rev. Dr. Marion H. Newton, pastor, officiating, assisted by Minister Irene Anthony, Pastor Joann Murrill, Pastor Ricky Simmons and the Rev. Larry Weston. Burial will be in Bradford Cemetery
The casket will be placed in the church at 2 p.m. Monday.
A wake service will be held from 6 to 8 p.m. Sunday at the funeral home.
The family will receive friends at the home, 1005 Truitt St.

EDWARD DINKINS Jr.
REMBERT — Edward Dinkins Jr., husband of Barbara Jean Carroll Dinkins, died Thursday, July 25, 2002, at Tuomey Regional Medical Center.
Born July 24, 1944, in Sumter County, he was a son of the late Edward Dinkins Sr. and Mamie Dennis Dinkins. In his youth, he was baptized and joined Rafting Creek Baptist Church. He attended Sumter County public schools and was employed at Dupont Inc. for 18 years. He was also employed as a packer by Gold Kist for five years.
Survivors besides his wife include five children, Quintel, Deqcaun and Mazie Dinkins, all of the home, Deloris Alston of Rembert and Karen Johnson of Camden; a stepdaughter, Evette Tessa Carroll of the home; and four grandchildren.
Funeral services will be held at 2 p.m. Sunday at Rafting Creek Baptist Church, U.S. 261 North, Rembert, with the Rev. Dr. Charles H. Davis, pastor, officiating, assisted by the Rev. Willie Dennis, Minister Lillian Reynolds and Minister Berdel Hill. Burial will be in the church cemetery.
The funeral procession will leave at 1:30 p.m. from the home, 3310 Spencer Road, Rembert.
The casket will be placed in the church at 1 p.m. Sunday.

NICHOLAS E. GAYMON
TALLAHASSEE, Fla. — Dr. Nicholas Edward Gaymon, 74, husband of Clara Floyd Gaymon, died Wednesday, July 24, 2002.
He was born in Clarendon County and attended Clarendon County public schools. He was drafted into active duty and served in the U.S. Army during the Korean War. After an honorable discharge, he continued his education and received a bachelor of arts degree from Morehouse College, a master of science degree in library science from Atlanta University, and a Ph.D. from Florida State University. He devoted his professional career to black institutions of higher learning, holding positions at Atlanta University and Dillard University as well as serving as library director at Florida A&M University. He retired from Florida A&M University after 27 years and has served as a consultant, evaluator and resource person to many library programs. He was a member of Bethel AME Church, where he served as a care leader, a Sunday school teacher, chair of the Finance Committee and as a steward.
Survivors besides his wife include five sons, Renwick Gaymon, Kenton Floyd and Warren Gaymon, all of Tallahassee, Delbert Floyd of Miramar, Fla. and Kirkland Floyd of Coral Springs, Fla.; two daughters, Dara Moody of Tallahassee and Debra Gaymon of Desoto, Texas; a sister, Naomi Deschamp and her husband, Ralph, of Pinewood; and seven grandchildren.
Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m. today at Bethel AME Church in Tallahassee. Burial will be in Southside Cemetery in Tallahassee.

JOSEPH MAPLE
Joseph Maple Sr., 90, husband of Sallie Davis Maple, died Wednesday, July 24, 2002, at Tuomey Regional Medical Center.
Born Feb. 18, 1912, in Sumter, he was a son of the late Simon Peter Maple and Carrie Crosson Maple. He attended Sumter County public schools and was employed by B.L. Montague until his retirement. He was a member of the Church of Christ, where he served faithfully prior to his illness.
Survivors besides his wife of 68 years include three sons, Joseph Maple Jr., Frederick Maple and Larry Maple, all of Sumter; four daughters, Mary Frierson, Emma Dennis, Louise Maple and Betty Reed, all of Sumter; two sons-in-law; four daughters-in-law; 24 grandchildren; 47 great-grandchildren; 23 great-great-grandchildren; a great-great-great grandchild; and a number of nieces and nephews.
He was preceded in death by a son, James Maple; two daughters, Sallie Mae and Maggie Maple; a daughter-in-law, Millie Maple; two brothers; and three sisters.
Funeral services will be held at 2 p.m. Sunday at the Plaza Church of Christ, 323 Miller Road, with Minister Melvin Sapp officiating. Burial will be in Hillside Memorial Park Cemetery.
The family will receive friends at the home, 19 Albert Spears Drive.

HESSIE W. RANTIN
MANNING — Hessie W. Rantin, 72, widow of Richard Allen Rantin, died July 25, 2002, at her home.
Born in Williamsburg County, she was a daughter of the late William and Beulah Barr. She received a bachelors degree in education from Claflin College and a masters in education from South Carolina State College. A retired educator, she spent the majority of her career as a teacher and guidance counselor in Clarendon County District 2 schools.
Survivors include a son, Bertram M. Rantin of Columbia; and a daughter, Dierdre T. Rantin of Columbia. She was preceded in death by a son, Tyrell A. Rantin.
Funeral services will be held at 2 p.m. Monday at Ebenezer Missionary Baptist Church in Manning with the Rev. George P. Windley, pastor, officiating. Burial will be in Manning Cemetery. The family will receive friends from 3 to 5 p.m. Sunday at 517 W. Huggins St., Manning.

JOYCE G. SKINNER
Joyce Geddings Skinner, 53, wife of Robert E. Skinner, died Friday, July 26, 2002 at Palmetto Richland Memorial Hospital in Columbia.
Born in Sumter, she was a daughter of Roland Geddings and Thelma Amerson Geddings. She was a member of Crosswell Baptist Church.
Survivors besides her husband and parents, all of Sumter include two daughters, Jennie Taylor and her husband, David, of Sumter and Laura Sheffield and her husband, Aaron, of Rock Hill; a brother, Wayne Geddings and his wife, Becky, of Monroe, N.C.; a sister, Cathy Northcutt and her husband, Wayne, of Columbia; and a number of nieces and nephews.
Graveside services will be held at 2 p.m. Sunday at Sumter Cemetery with the Rev. Rodney Howard and the Rev. Drew Choate officiating.
The family will receive friends at the home of her parents, 915 Sassafras St. Memorials may be made to the Crosswell Baptist Church Building Fund, 604 Mathis St., Sumter, SC 29150.

FRANK R. BLACKLEY
Sgt. Frank Richard Blackley, husband of Deborah Ann Boland Blackley, died Saturday, July 27, 2002, at his home. Born Dec. 28, 1962, in Falmouth, Mass., he was the son of John Richard and Carol Lee Sedora Blackley. He graduated from Embry Riddle College and was a technical sergeant in the U.S. Air Force. He was a member of the First Church of God. Survivors besides his wife and parents include a son, Cory John Blackley of the home; a daughter, Brynn Nichole Blackley of the home; a brother, Jay Bryan Blackley of Erma, N.J.; and two sisters, Tammy Blackley Norris of Rio Grande, N.J., and Kim Blackley of Villas, N.J. Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m. Tuesday at the First Church of God with the Rev. Ron Bower officiating. Graveside services with full military honors will be held at 11 a.m. Friday at Cold Springs Cemetery in Cape May, N.J. The family will receive friends from 7 to 9 p.m. today at the funeral home and other times at the home. They will also receive friends from 7 to 9 p.m. Thursday at Evoy Funeral Home in Cape May. Memorials may be made to the First Church of God Building. Bullock Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.Services will be announced by Bullock Funeral Home.

ELAINE P. DORRELL
EFFINGHAM — Elaine Phillips Dorrell, 86, formerly of Turbeville, husband of Walton H. Dorrell, died Sunday, July 28, 2002, at her home. Born in Clarendon County, she was a daughter of the late Bennett Miller Thomas and Grace Angeline Keels Thomas. She was a retired school cafeteria employee and a member of Horse Branch F.W.B. Church, where she formerly taught the junior Sunday school class and was an active member of the Women’s Auxiliary for many years. Survivors besides her husband include a son, Wayne T. Phillips of San Antonio, Texas; two daughters, Kathy D. Phillips of Smyrna, Ga., and Gloria P. Floyd of Turbeville; a stepson, Carroll Dorrell of Effingham; a brother, Sammie C. Thomas of Charlotte; a sister, Arrie Lee Raymond of Manning; 10 grandchildren; and 14 great-grandchildren and two stepgrandchildren. She was preceded in death by her first husband, Colie L. Phillips; two sons, James Byron “J.B.” Phillips and Bennett Laverne Phillips; and a daughter, Iris P. Bilstein. Funeral services will be held at 4 p.m. Tuesday at Horse Branch F.W.B. Church. Burial will be in the church cemetery. The family will receive friends from 7 to 9 p.m. today at the funeral home. Floyd Funeral Home of Olanta is in charge of arrangements.

ALCOLU — Bertha “Sue” Harrison Jones, 81, wife of Isaiah Jones, died July 28, 2002, at 5782 Brogdon Road in the Wesminister Community of Alcolu. Born June 11, 1921, in Alcolu, she was a daughter of the late Henry Harrison and Mary Vertell Tomlin. The family will receive friends at the home of her niece and husband, Shirley Taylor and Hazel Evins, 5782 Brogdon Road in Alcolu. Services will be announced by Samuels Funeral Home LLC of Manning.

JOHN J. McDANIEL
John Jack H. McDaniel Sr., 78, widower of Annie Mae Myers McDaniel, died Sunday, July 28, 2002, at his home. Born Oct. 21, 1924, in Lee County, he was a son of the late Annie McDaniel.
