Posted By: GenealogyBuff.com WHITFIELD -- Mrs. Annie Mae Coard Whitfield died Thursday, September 4, 1997, in Lake City/Scranton Health Care Facility in Scranton. Funeral services for Mrs. Whitfield were held Saturday, September 20, 1997, at Central Baptist Church in Salters. Burial followed in Salters Cemetery directed by Dimery and Rogers Funeral Home. Mrs. Whitfield was born July 19, 1927, in Salters, a daughter of the late Henry Coard and Lillie Dozier Coard. She graduated from Tauro College in New York City. She was formerly employed as a housekeeper in Beth Abraham Hospital under Hospice of local 1199 Union in Bronx, N.Y. for 20 years. She was a member of Union Baptist Church and sang in the senior choir. Survivors are: four sons, John Whitfield of Rosedale, California; James Earl Whitfield of New York City; and Esau Whitfield and Jacob Whitfield, both of Salters; three daughters, Mrs. Sarah Amos of New York City; Mrs. Lillie Mae Whitfield Wilson of Salters; and Mrs. Rose Allende of New York City; and one sister, Mrs. Marie Shaw of Salters; her Godmother, Mrs. Agnes Stephenson of Salters; four Godsisters, Mrs. Beatrice Anderson, Mrs. Julia Stephenson, Mrs. Mary Ann McElveen and Mrs. Jannie Mae McCrea; one Godbrother, Joe Louis Stephenson; and two Godchildren, Lavern Shaw and Ervin Carolina.
DINGLE -- Funeral services for Rebecca Woods Dingle were held Wednesday, September 17, 1997, at Lane Chapel A.M.E. Church in Lane, conducted by Rev. James Witherspoon. Burial followed in McKnight Cemetery in Gourdine directed by Dimery and Rogers Funeral Home. Mrs. Dingle, 96, died Friday, September 12, 1997, at Faith Nursing Home in Florence. She was born October 13, 1907, in Lane, a daughter of the late Sam Woods and Mattie McElveen Woods. She was employed as a cook at a hotel and a nurse's aide at a hospital. She was a member of Lane Chapel A.M.E. Church. Surviving is one brother, Marion Louis Woods of Lane.
COOPER -- Funeral services for Lincoln "Mickie" Cooper, Sr. were held at Wilson Chapel First Missionary Baptist Church in Kings-tree. Mr. Cooper, 93, died Wednesday, September 24, 1997, at Carolinas Hospital System-Kingstree. He was born May 17, 1904, in Kingstree, the son of the late Jim Barr and Mary Cooper Barr. He was a member of Wilson Chapel First Baptist Church. Survivors are: his wife, Mrs. Louisa D. Cooper of the home; six sons, Arthur Fulton of Lake City; Nathaniel B. Cooper of Columbia; Lincoln Cooper, Jr. and Lenard Cooper, both of Philadelphia, Pa.; Roosevelt Cooper and Charles Cooper, both of Kingstree; two daughter, Mrs. Sarah Ford of Philadelphia, Pa.; and Mrs. Tressie Haynes of Columbia; and ten step-children, Willie Daniels, Mrs. Ella Whitfield and Adam Daniels, all of Salters; Mrs. Phyliss Nelson and Freddie Daniels, both of Clearwater, FL; Mrs. Pearl Miller of Gourdine, S.C.; Mrs. Estelle Gary of Kingstree; Pete Daniels of Deer Park, FL; Elijah Daniels of Westbury, N.Y.; and James Daniels of Columbia.
DAVIS -- Funeral services for Mrs. Mary L. Davis (Sudie) were held Saturday, September 27, 1997, at Siloam Baptist Church, conducted by Rev. Francis Burrows. Burial followed at McGill Cemetery in Greeleyville directed by Dimery and Rogers Funeral Home. Mrs. Davis died Tuesday, September 23, 1997. She was born April 7, 1915, in Williamsburg County, the daughter of the late Sam Lee and Janie Tisdale Fluitt. Her formal education was received in Williamsburg County. Later, she enrolled in a school of nursing in Washington, D.C. and pursued a career in practical nursing. While in Washington, D.C., she worked at the Capital Community projects and organizations in support of disadvantaged youths, widows and the elderly. Upon returning to Kingstree in 1972, she joined Siloam Baptist Church and organized a Willing Workers Organization, a member of the Jubilee Choir, the Missionary Society and the Pastor's Aid Club. She was a member of Kingstree Development Corporation. Survivors are: one daughter, Mrs. Daisy B. Nixon of Hopkins, S.C.; and two half-sisters, Mrs. Alice Singletary and Mrs. Rosa Fluitt.
BRADLEY -- Nathaniel Bradley, Jr., formerly of Salters, 45, died September 18, 1997, in a local hospital. Funeral services were held Saturday, September 27, 1997, at Jerusalem United Methodist Church in Salters. Burial followed at Jerusalem Cemetery directed by Henryhand Funeral Home. Mr. Bradley was born in Charlotte, N.C., a son of Nathaniel Bradley and Betty Bradley of Salters. Survivors are: one son, Nathaniel Bradley, III, of San Diego, Calif.; one daughter, Marisa Smalls of St. Petersburg, Fla.; five brothers, Thaddeus Bradley and Paul Bradley, both of Salters, Timothy Bradley of San Diego, Calif.; Daniel Bradley of St. Petersburg, Fla.; and Norman Bradley of Lancaster, PA; and six sisters, Diane Brunson, Robin McCrea of Kingstree; Audrey Davis of Columbia; Sandra Jamison of Pensacola, Fla.; and Laura Dozier and Joan McCrea, both of Salters.
BOARDS -- Funeral services for Samuel Lee Boards were held Monday, September 29, 1997, at St. John True Church of the Living God in Nesmith. Burial followed at Kennedyville Cemetery in Nesmith directed by Henryhand Funeral Home. Mr. Boards died Wednesday, September 24, 1997, in a Florence hospital. He was born December 6, 1957, the son of the late Mr. and Mrs. Jessie Boards. He was a member of St. John True Church of the Living God. He served in the U.S. Army and was honorably discharged. Survivors are: two brothers, Jessie Boards, II, of Kingstree; and Harry Boards of Russell County, Alabama; three sisters, Mrs. Lillie Boards Dowling of Kingstree; Mrs. Bessie Morris Pressley of Nesmith; and Shirley Jean Boards of Rochester, N.Y.; and two step-sisters, Janie McCrea of Little Rock, Ark.; and Noyta Muhammad of Brooklyn, N.Y.
WHEELER -- Funeral services for Mrs. Nettie Dorothy Pressley Wheeler were held Oct. 2, 1997, at Elijah United Methodist Church in Kingstree, conducted by Rev. Rufus Snowden. Burial followed in the churchyard cemetery directed by Dimery and Rogers Funeral Home. Mrs. Wheeler, 63, died Sept. 25, 1997, at her residence in Kingstree. She was born Sept. 3, 1934, in Williamsburg County, a daughter of Mrs. Susan Barr Pressley and the late Keith Pressley. She was retired from Hollywood Memorial Hospital in Hollywood, FL. She was a member of Elijah United Methodist Church. Survivors, in addition to her mother of Kingstree, are: four sons, Larry Pressley and Theotis Pressley, both of Hollywood, Fla.; Raymond Pressley of Bartow, Fla.; and Steven Wheeler of Okeecmobee, Fla.; four daughters, Mrs. Mary L. Scott and Mrs. Gene Wilkerson, both of Kingstree; Lynn Denise Wheeler of Hollywood, Fla.; and Shermeka Wheeler of Hollywood, Fla.; three brothers, Isaac Pressley and Jessie Pressley, both of Miami, Fla.; and Ozzie Pressely of Philadelphia, Pa.; and eight sisters, Mrs. Margaret Pressley of Baltimore, Md.; Mrs. Johnie Ruth Cooper of Kingstree; Mrs. Lillie Lou Canty of Jersey City, N.J.; and Mrs. Dora Turner of Hollywood, Fla.; Mrs. Emma Tisdale and Mrs. Pauline Singletary, both of Kingstree; Mrs. Mary Cunningham of Norfolk, Va.; and Mrs. Catherine Tucker of North Carolina.
HUMPHREY -- Richard Loraine Humphrey, husband of Carolyn K. Humphrey, died Saturday, October 4, 1997, at his residence. He was 64 years old. Funeral services were held Monday, October 6, 1997, in the Chapel of Williamsburg Funeral Home. Burial followed in Kingstree Memorial Gardens directed by Williamsburg Funeral Home. Mr. Humphrey was born in Lynchburg, S.C., a son of Bertha Mae L. Humphrey and Ben Gary Humphrey. He was retired from J.P. Stevens in Pamplico and was a member of Community Pentecostal Holiness Church in Scranton, where he had served as Sunday school teacher. Mr. Humphrey coached Little League Baseball in Pamplico for 11 years and was an avid guitar player. Survivors are: his wife of Kingstree; two brothers, Lewis Smith of Charleston; and Rev. Victor Smith of Irmo; and three sisters, Joye Bowman of Dillon; Margie D. Gray and Margaret Smith Burrows, both of Kingstree.
FERGUSON -- Funeral services for Sam Ferguson were held Thursday, October 9, 1997, at Mount Zion United Methodist Church in Kingstree, conducted by Rev. Willie Wilson Franklin. Burial followed in Greenlawn Cemetery directed by Redmond-Richardson Funeral Home. Mr. Ferguson, 65, died Saturday, October 4, 1997, at Carolinas Hospital System-Kingstree. Survivors are: seven sisters, Mrs. Annie Bell Montgomery and Mrs. Mary Gamble, both of Greeleyville; Mrs. Robertsena Green, Mrs. Annie Mae Burgess and Mrs. Sarah Scott, all of Kingstree; Mrs. Betty Lou Ferguson and Rosa Mae Ferguson, both of the home; and two brothers, Frank Ferguson of Kingstree; and Robert Ferguson, Jr. of Lake City.
MITCHUM -- Funeral services for Steven Allan Mitchum, 20, of West Columbia, were held Tuesday, October 14, 1997, at Calvary Baptist Church. Mr. Mitchum died Saturday, October 11, 1997. Born in Columbia, he had been a lifelong resident. He was a son of Alton O. Mitchum, Jr. and Linda Lea Rogers Mitchum Taylor. He attended Calvary Baptist Church and was an employee of Refrigeration Specialties. He was an ANSI and OSHA certified refrigeration specialist. Survivors, in addition to his parents, are: his stepfather, Randy M. Taylor of West Columbia; one brother, Chris Mitchum of West Columbia; his maternal grandparents, Fred and Marion DuBose of Florence; and his grandmother, Bonnie Shumaker of Columbia.
