Posted By: GenealogyBuff.com THOMAS GAMBLE, SR. -- Funeral services for Thomas Gamble, Sr. were held Friday, June 1, 2001, at Bethlehem Missionary Baptist Church in Salters, conducted by the Rev. Levern O. Brown. Burial followed at White Oak Cemetery in Cades directed by Redmond-Richardson Funeral Home. Mr. Gamble, 80, died Saturday, May 26, 2001, at his residence. He was born February 14, 1921, in Williamsburg County, a son of the late Melvin and Eula Fulton Gamble. He was a member of Bethlehem Missionary Baptist Church. He was employed as a construction worker and served his country in the United States Army. Survivors are: his wife, Mrs. Beatrice T. Gamble of the home; two daughters, Mrs. Betty Lou Hall of Columbia; and Mrs. Odessa Kah of Japan; two sisters, Mrs. Flossie Humphery of Columbia; and Mrs. Martha Cunningham of Philadelphia, PA; and his mother-in-law, Mrs. Carrie Tisdale of Kingstree.
THOMAS PINION -- Funeral services for Thomas Adore Pinion were held Monday, May 28, 2001, at Cascade Baptist Church in Mooresville, NC, conducted by the Rev. Chris Amburn. Burial followed at Catawba Memorial Park directed by Hickory Funeral Home. Mr. Pinion, 69, died Friday, May 25, 2001, at the Brian Center in Mooreville, NC. He was born July 21, 1931, in Cabarrus County, NC, a son of the late Grady Alexander and Minnie Coffey Pinion. He was a Navy veteran of the Korean War. He was a retired meat cutter for Winn-Dixie. He was married to the late Elnora Wagner Pinion. Survivors are: one son, Charles Alexander Pinion of Kingstree; and three sisters, Dorothy P. Wayne, of N. Wilkboro; Mary P. Pinkston of Eastern Shores, VA; and Marie P. Collier of Lenior.
ANNIE SINGLETARY -- Funeral services for Mrs. Annie Mae Fulton Singletary were held Saturday, June 2, 2001, at Greater Bethel African Methodist Episcopal Church in Kingstree, conducted by the Rev. Jerome Wilson. Burial followed at Singletary Cemetery in Kingstree directed by Redmond-Richardson Funeral Home. Mrs. Singletary, 73, died Sunday, May 27, 2001, at the Williamsburg Regional Hospital in Kingstree. She was born October 30, 1927, in Williamsburg County, a daughter of the late Robert and Mary McFadden Fulton. She was a member of Greater Bethel African Methodist Episcopal Church. Survivors are: her husband, Freddie Singletary of the home; one daughter, Carolyn Singletary of the home; two grandsons she reared as her very own, Daniel Bradley and Deion Bradley, both of the home; two brothers, Wallace Fulton and Joe Louis Fulton, both of Cades; and three sisters, Mrs. Angie Johnson and Mrs. Dorothy Rush, both of Cades; and Magalene Brockington of Kingstree.
JEFFERSON ELLIS -- Jefferson Phillips (Jeff) Ellis, 83, died Thursday, May 24, 2001, in a Sumter hospital. Graveside funeral services were held Sunday, May 27, 2001, at Forest Hills Cemetery in Rock Hill directed by Williamsburg Funeral Home. Mr. Ellis was born in Raleigh, NC, a son of the late Weldon Thomas Ellis and Ruth Phillips Ellis. He was a graduate of Virginia Polytechnic Institute with a degree in mechanical engineering. He started his career with Celanese Corporation and Bowater Paper Co. and retired from Baxter Labs in Kingstree. He served as a Lt. jg in the US Navy during World War II aboard the USS Monterey in the Pacific theatre. He was a Presbyterian. Survivors are: his wife, Mrs. Anne Cauthen Ellis of Kingstree; and one sister, Mrs. Ruth Ellis Allen of Silver Springs, MD.
KATHLEEN JAMES -- Kathleen Smoak James, 89, widow of the Rev. James E. James, died Tuesday, May 29, 2001, in a Georgetown hospital. Funeral services were held Thursday, May 31, 2001, at the Kingstree First Baptist Church. Burial followed at Kingstree Memorial Gardens directed by Williamsburg Funeral Home. Mrs. James was born in Charleston County, a daughter of the late Joseph William Smoak and Lilly Chaplin Smoak. She was a graduate of Mars Hill Junior College, College of Charleston and received her masters degree at Appalachian State University. She retired after 27 years of teaching elementary school. She was a member of Kingstree First Baptist Church, where she sang in the choir for many years and was a past president of the Kingstree Music Club. She was former member of Citadel Square Baptist Church and its choir, a former associate Training Union Director of the Charleston Baptist Association and was a former state president of the Business Womenıs W.M.U. Survivors are: one daughter, Eva J. Black of Kingstree; one brother, Joseph Arnold Smoak of San Antonio, TX; and one sister, Jerri S. Wilson of Deland, FL.
ARTHER McGEE -- Arther LeRoy McGee, 56, died Friday, May 25, 2001, at his residence. Funeral services were held Sunday, May 27, 2001, at Broad Swamp Pentecostal Holiness Church. Burial followed at the church cemetery directed by Williamsburg Funeral Home. Mr. McGee was born in Kingstree, a son of Mrs. Lucille Eaddy McGee and the late J.P. McGee. He was a member of Broad Swamp Pentecostal Holiness Church. Survivors, in addition to his mother of Kingstree, are: his wife, Mrs. Charlotte Anne Coker McGee of Kingstree; one daughter, Debra Anne Britton of Kentucky; one son, Rannie LeRoy McGee of Kingstree; and two brothers, James Edward McGee of Turbeville; and John Joseph McGee of Kingstree.
LATTA BRANNAN -- Latta Lester "Laddie" Brannan, 85, died Wed., May 30, 2001, at his home in Murrells Inlet. Graveside funeral services were held Sat., June 2, 2001, at Union Presbyterian Church Cemetery in Salters directed by Williamsburg Funeral Home. Mr. Brannan was born March 24, 1916, in Brownsdale, TX. He was the son of the late Gaylord A. and Ida Mae Dill Brannan of Manning. He was a graduate of Columbia Business College and Parks Air College in St. Louis, MO. He was a retired airline pilot for Pan American and Delta Airlines. During World War II, he transported military aircraft to the European Theater. He was a member of Union Presbyterian Church in Salters. Survivors are: his wife, Addie McClary Brannan of Murrells Inlet; one daughter, Carolyn Brannan Easterly of Park City, UT; two sons, Latta Lester Brannan, Jr. of Clarksville, GA; and John Gregory Brannan of Southern Pines, NC; and two sisters, Nina B. Wilson of Manning and Betty B. Bozard of Cameron.
JAMES BENTON, JR. -- James Arrowood Benton, Jr., 75, of Greenwood, widower of Anna Belle Ward Benton, died April 20, 2001, at Self Memorial Hospital. Funeral services were held at Blyth Funeral Home Chapel in Greenwood, conducted by the Rev. John O. Crawford. Burial was held April 22, 2001, at Kingstree Memorial Gardens, conducted by the Rev. Tony Elliott and the Rev. Robert Ward. Born in Kingstree, he was the son of the late James A. Sr. and Bertha McKnight Benton. He was an avid Boy Scout, obtaining the rank of Eagle and was a member of the Order of the Arrow. He was also a past scoutmaster. He was a graduate of Kingstree High School and was an US Marine Corps. Veteran, having served in the Pacific Theater during World War II where he participated in the invasion of Iwo Jima. He was the recipient of numerous decorations including the Purple Heart, Silver Star, the Medal for Gallantry in Action and others. He worked as a police officer in Kingstree and in 1948 joined the SC Highway Patrol. He retired in 1981 as a district lieutenant. He was a life-long Presbyterian and member of Rock Presbyterian Church. At the time of his death he was Elder Emeritus and a trustee. Survivors are: four daughters, Mrs. Lois Mitchell of Greenwood; Mrs. Betty Bingham of Florence; Mrs. Mary Pinson of Piedmont; and Mrs. Jean Tinsley of Waterloo; and one brother, George Benton of Kingstree.
J. D. O'BRYAN, JR. -- J. D. (Dessie) O'Bryan, Jr., 78, died Saturday, June 2, 2001, in a Florence hospital. Graveside funeral services were held Sunday, June 3, 2001, in Williamsburg Cemetery in Kingstree directed by Williamsburg Funeral Home. Mr. O'Bryan was born in Kingstree, a son of Marion Gilland O'Bryan and J. D. O'Bryan, Sr. He was a graduate of Kingstree High School, attended USC and The Citadel and received his law degree from Richmond Law School. He was a veteran of World War II and the Korean Conflict and was a member of the VFW and American Legion. He was a member of Williamsburg Presbyterian Church. He practiced law in Kingstree for over 40 years. Survivors: his wife, Jewell P. O'Bryan of Kingstree; one step-daughter, Mrs. Lynn Brown of Florence; one step-son, Bill Black of McClellanville; one brother, Thomas McCabe of Kingstree; and one sister, Marion Vaughan of Hampton.
ISIAH CHANDLER -- Funeral services for Isiah Chandler were held Sat., June 2, 2001, at William N. Redmond Chapel, conducted by the Rev. Terrence L. Washington. Burial followed at St. Mary United Methodist Church Cemetery in Kingstree directed by Redmond-Richardson Funeral Home. Mr. Chandler, 75, died Sat., May 26, 2001, at the North Shore Medical Hospital in Miami, FL. He was born August 8, 1925, in Williamsburg County, a son of the late Jones and Bessie Barr Chandler. He was married to the late Effie Burgess Chandler. He retired after several years of employment as a maintenance supervisor with the CHI South Dade, Inc. In October of 1982, he was selected second runner-up for the Doris Ison Employee of the Year at the Community Health of South Dade, Inc. He was a member of Gilbert Southern Star Subordinate Lodge No. 625 of Miami, FL. Survivors are: one daughter, Ursula McCray of Miami, FL; and one sister, Mrs. Bessie Leo of Jersey City, NJ.
