ROSA CHISOLMK -- Funeral services for Mrs. Rosa Lee Harden Chisolm were held Sunday, June 25, 2001, at Antioch Missionary Baptist Church in Lane, conducted by the Rev. Elder B. Holmes and the Rev. Bonus Miller. Burial followed at Greenlawn Cemetery directed by Redmond-Richardson Funeral Home. Mrs. Chisolm, 56, formerly of Lane, died Wednesday, June 20, 2001, at Schulman and Schachne Institute for Nursing and Rehabilitation in Brooklyn, NY. She graduated from Williamsburg County Training School (C.E. Murray High School) in 1962. She was a member of Antioch Missionary Baptist Church. Survivors, in addition to her mother, Mrs. Louise Steward Harden of Lane, are two brothers, Nathan Harden of Brooklyn, NY; and Nathaniel Harden of Lane; one sister, Brenda J. Harden of Lane; a first cousin reared as a brother, Walter Harden of Lilesville, NC; and one adopted brother, Marshall Gordon of Brooklyn, NY.

TIMMY BRANHAM -- Timmy Albert Branham, 24, husband of Jamie Marie Hogan Branham, died Wednesday, July 4, 2001, in Manning. Funeral services were held Fri., July 6, 2001, at Stephens Funeral Home Chapel in Manning. Burial followed at Strickland-Feagin Cemetery near Lake City directed by Stephens Funeral Home. Born October 15, 1976, in Manning, he was a son of Jerry Lee and Janie Ray Branham. He was a construction worker and was of the Church of God faith. Survivors, in addition to his wife of Greeleyville and his parents of Greeleyville, are: one daughter, Taylor Nicole Lowder of Manning; one sister, Jennifer Lynn Branham of Greeleyville; and his maternal grandmother, Frances Mullins of Kingstree.

GUSSIE McNELLAGE -- Funeral services for Mrs. Gussie Inez Marion McNellage were held Thurs., July 5, 2001, at Greater Lane Chapel A.M.E. Church in Lane, conducted by the Rev. Donnie McBride. Burial followed at Gordon Cemetery directed by Dimery and Rogers Funeral Home. Mrs. McNellage, 85, died June 30, 2001, at Carolinas Hospital System-Florence. She was born Oct. 7, 1915, in Lane, a daughter of the late Mrs. Eva Queen Marion and the Rev. George H. Marion, Sr. She was the widow of the late Bentley McNellage, Sr. She was a member of Greater Lane Chapel A.M.E. Church. She was also a member of the Tribe of Noah. Survivors are: three sons, James S. McNellage of Bronx, NY; Bentley McNellage, Jr. of Lane; Joseph McNellage of Gaithersburg, MD; two daughters, Mrs. Maggie McNellage Smith of Lane; and Mrs. Dorothy Juanita Franklin of Philadelphia, PA; one brother, George Marion; one step-brother, Willie Marsh; three sisters, Mrs. Ernestine Woods; Mrs. Wilhelmina Bradshaw, both of Philadelphia, PA; and Mrs. Mattie Allen of West Bridgewater, MD; and one step-sister, Mrs. Elease McDowell of CT.

JANIE BURGESS -- Funeral services for Mrs. Janie Ruth Burgess were held July 6, 2001, at Mt. Pilgrim Baptist Church in Salters, conducted by the Rev. S. A. Green. Burial followed at Salters Cemetery directed by Dimery and Rogers Funeral Home. Mrs. Burgess, 44, died Monday, July 2, 2001, after injuries sustained from an automobile accident. She was born Dec. 5, 1956, in Salters, a daughter of Mrs. Ruther Dell McGee Burgess and the late Thomas Burgess. She was a 1975 graduate of Williamsburg Blakely High School and received a nursing certificate from Williamsburg Technical College. She was a member of Mt. Pilgrim Missionary Baptist Church. She was employed as a home aide health care nurse with Georgetown County. She was also formerly employed with Andrews Apparel. Survivors, in addition to her mother of Salters, are: one son, Antonio Burgess of Andrews; two daughters, LaToya Burgess and Emeral Burgess, both of Andrews; her grandmother, Mrs. Jannie Graham of Salters; five brothers, Bruce Burgess of Kingstree; Thomas Burgess of Greensboro, NC; Charles Burgess of Charlotte, NC; George Burgess of Salters; and the Rev. Michael Burgess of Andrews; and three sisters, Mrs. Gertrude Salters and Mrs. Sarah Burgess, both of Salters; and Mrs. Laura Gamble of MD.

GLADYS JUNE -- Funeral services for Gladys Lowery June were held Sat., July 7, 2001, at Charity Baptist Church in Lane, conducted by the Rev. Carl Shaw. Burial followed at Charity Church Cemetery directed by Dimery and Rogers Funeral Home. Mrs. June, 56, died Thurs., June 28, 2001, in Philadelphia, PA. She was born March 4, 1945, in Suttons, a daughter of the late McKinley Lowery and Anna Bynum Lowery. Survivors are: five daughters, Brenda Brockington, Nadine Chieves, Lamonia June, Pam-ela June and Brook Renee June, all of Philadelphia, PA; one brother, Alton Lowery of Salters; and two sisters, Mrs. Eardean Gibson of New York, NY; and Mrs. Denoris June of Salters.

CHARLES SPATES, SR. -- Funeral services for Charles Edward Spates, Sr. were held Monday, July 9, 2001, at Beulah United Methodist Church in Lake City, conducted by the Rev. James Graham. Burial followed at the State Cemetery in Cades directed by Samuels and Richardson Funeral Home. Mr. Spates died Tuesday, July 3, 2001, at Carolinas Hospital System-Lake City. He was born December 29, 1950, in Williamsburg County, a son of the late Hubert and Blanch Fulmore Spates. In 1970, he graduated from Cades High School in Cades. He was a member of Mount Beulah United Methodist Church. He worked for a number of years at Wellman Industries of Johnsonville. Survivors are: his wife, Mrs. Harry Lee Spates of the home; three daughters, Mrs. Cherrie Ann Burgess and Mrs. Carroll Wilson, both of Lake City; and Windy Denise Spates of the home; two sons, Charles Edward Spates, Jr. and Emmanuel Lewis Spates, both of the home; two sisters, Mrs. Juanita Nelson of Salters; and Mrs. Earnestine Graham of Johnsonville; three brothers, Sammie Davis Spates of Hollywood, FL; James Allen Spates and Taft Spates, both of Lake City; and his mother-in-law, Mrs. Letha Brayboy of Lake City.

BETTY BROWN -- Mrs. Betty Moore McKenzie Brown, 71, widow of Theodore Brown, died Saturday, July 7, 2001, in a Florence hospital. Funeral services were held Tuesday, July 10, 2001, at Kingstree First Baptist Church. Burial will follow at a later date, directed by Williamsburg Funeral Home. Mrs. Brown was born in Trio, a daughter of the late Walter E. Moore, Sr. and Creola Moore Hancock. She was a graduate of Williamsburg High School and retired after 40 years as manager of the Kingstree office of General Telephone Co. She was first married to the late Levi McKenzie. She was a member of Kingstree First Baptist Church, the Rainbow Sunday school class, The Pilot Club and was a former member of the Women of the Moose. Survivors are: one son, Robert M. McKenzie of Kingstree; two sisters, Joyce M. Lybrand of Marion and Carolyn M. Williams of Kingstree ; and one brother, Walter Everett (W. E.) Moore, Jr. of Kingstree.

BERNARD KEELS -- Funeral services for Bernard "Fee" Keels, Sr. were held July 8, 2001, at Siloam Baptist Church in Kingstree, conducted by the Rev. Francis Burrows. Burial followed at Greenlawn Cemetery directed by Redmond-Richardson. Mr. Keels, 28, died July 4, 2001, at Palmetto-Richland Memorial Hospital in Columbia, after injuries sustained in an automobile accident. He was born Oct. 5, 1972, in Kingstree, a son of Mrs. Betty Lou Mullins Keels and the late June Keels. He graduated from Kingstree Senior High School in 1990. After high school, he served in the United States Air Force. He was employed at Georgia-Pacific. Survivors, in addition to his mother of Kingstree, are three children, Shanice Keels, Quindon Keels and Bernard Keels, Jr., all of Kingstree; five brothers, Ernest Keels, Lewis Keels and Curtis Keels, all of Kingstree; Levern Keels of Macon, GA; and Michael Keels of Columbia; and his fiancé, Frankie McFadden of Kingstree.

EMMA BURGESS -- Mrs. Emma Keels Burgess, 87, widow of Charles C. Burgess, Jr., died Fri., July 6, 2001, in a Columbia hospital. Graveside funeral services were held July 10, 2001, at Williamsburg Cemetery. Mrs. Burgess was born in Timmonsville, a daughter of the late Edgar Garris Keels and Clyde Hill Keels. She was a graduate of Columbia College and received her masters degree in education from the University of SC. She retired after 32 years of teaching in Kingstree schools and in 1958 was selected Williamsburg County Teacher of the Year. She was a member of Kingstree United Methodist Church and a former member of the Kingstree Garden Club. Surviving is one sister, Helen K. Graves of Jacksonville, FL.

DR. KINSLEY ROMER, JR. -- Dr. Kinsley Gird Romer, Jr. died July 28, 2001, at the University Hospital in Augusta, GA. Memorial services were held Sat., Aug. 4, 2001, at Louisville Associate Reformed Presbyterian Church. Born April 30, 1940, in NY, he grew up in Louisville, GA. He graduated from the University of Georgia with a Ph.D. in history and retired after 30 years as a professor of history at Keanesaw State University. Survivors are: his mother, Mrs. Lee Little Romer of Louisville; one brother, James W. Romer of Burlington, NC; and one sister, Patty R. Guill of Richardson, TX.
