Posted By: GenealogyBuff.com SAM COOPER, JR. -- Graveside services for Sam David Cooper Jr., conducted by the Rev. Roosevelt McFadden, were held July 31, 2001, at the Florence National Cemetery. Burial was directed by Redmond-Richardson Funeral Home. Mr. Cooper, 76, died Tues., July 24, 2001, at Interfaith Medical Center in Brooklyn, NY. He was born in Williamsburg County, SC, a son of Sam David Cooper, Sr. and Chrisey Cooper. He was a member of Bethesda United Methodist Church. He served in the US Army during World War II. He later moved to Brooklyn, NY, and was employed as a construction worker. Survivors are: three sisters, Mrs. Lucille Washington of Newark, NJ; Mrs. Stine C. Tisdale of Greenville; and Mrs. Gladys McDuffie of Paterson, NJ.
SAM GASQUE -- Sam Gasque, 76, died Tues., July 31, 2001, in a Florence hospital. Funeral services were conducted Thurs., Aug. 2, 2001, at the Williamsburg Funeral Home Chapel, by the Rev. Larry Rodeffer. Burial, directed by Williamsburg Funeral Home, followed at McClary Cemetery. Mr. Gasque was born in Marion County, a son of the late Sam and Daisy Perriett Gasque. He was a retired beverage route salesman. He served in the European theatre in the US Army during World War II. He was a member of the V.F.W. and a Baptist. Survivors are: his wife, Mrs. Joan Barrineau Gasque of Kingstree; and two sons, David Gasque of Florence; and Dan Gasque of Kingstree.
LILLIAN HUGGINS -- Lillian Gertrude Lewis Huggins, 90, widow of J. Palmer Huggins, died Tuesday, July 24, 2001, at her home. Funeral services for Mrs. Huggins were held July 26, 2001, at Morris Funeral Home. Burial, directed by Morris Funeral Home, followed at Ebenezer United Methodist Church Cemetery Mrs. Huggins was born in Hemingway, a daughter of the late James Thomas Lewis and Mary Jane Ceclia Eaddy Lewis. She was a homemaker and a member of Ebenezer United Methodist Church. Survivors are: six daughters, Clarcy H. Lea of Columbia; Jackie H. Huggins of Lake City; Nancy H. Gaskins; Mary Nell H. Hydrick; Lillian "Jo" H. Hanna; and Palmer Ann H. Tanner, all of Kingstree.
MARY WILSON -- Funeral services for Mrs. Mary Ann Fulmore Wilson were held Sat. July 14, 2001, at Wilson Chapel Baptist Church, conducted by the Rev. Herbert Godwin. Burial, directed by Dimery and Rogers Funeral Home, followed at the church cemetery in Kingstree. Mrs. Wilson, 69, died Monday, July 9, 2001, at Carolinas Hospital System-Florence. She was born Sept. 25, 1931, in Williamsburg County, a daughter of the late Henry Wilson and Mary McCutcheon Fulmore. She was a member of Wilson Chapel First Missionary Baptist Church. Survivors are: her husband, Henry Wilson of Lake City; four daughters, Mrs. Emma Leech of San Diego, CA; Mrs. Annie Ruth Lee of Kingstree; Jessie M. Wilson and Mrs. Henrietta Fulmore, both of Lake City; one son, Eddie Wilson of Lake City; and three sisters, Mrs. Hannah Johnson of Baltimore, MD; Mrs. Ann McRae and Mrs. Betty Williams of Kingstree.
ROBERT BEAN -- Funeral services for Robert Leo Bean were held Tuesday, July 17, 2001, at New Grace Temple in Florence, conducted by Elder Micheal Cook. Burial followed at Singletary Cemetery in Kingstree directed by Dimery and Rogers Funeral Home. Mr. Bean died July 12, 2001, at McLeod Regional Medical Center in Florence. He was born Aug. 22, 1946, in Rocky Mountain, NC, a son of Mrs. Bernice Bean and the late Wilbert Bean, Sr. He was a veteran of the US Navy. He was employed by ABB Circuit Co. Survivors, in addition to his mother of Yeadon, PA, are: his wife, Evangelist Caretha Bean of the home; one son, Robert Leo Bean, Jr. of Norfolk, VA; two daughters, Barbara Charlotte Robinson of Florence; and Cynthia Kinder of Atlanta, GA; one brother, Wilbert Bean, Jr. of Yeadon, PA; three sisters, Consta Willia Bean, Theresa Bean and Naomia Bean, all of Yeadon, PA; one adopted broth er, Mack Authur Bryant, Sr. and one adopted sister, Earlene Robinson.
RUFUS SMOAK, SR. -- Rufus Francis Smoak, Sr., 79, died Tues., July 17, 2001, at his residence. Funeral services were held Thurs., July 19, 2001, at Calvary Baptist Church. Burial, directed by Brockington Funeral Home, followed at Lake City Memorial Park. Mr. Smoak was born in Orangeburg, a son of the late Willie Rufus and Mary Eva Ash Smoak. He was a retired auto body repairman and employee of Sadisco Salvage Yard in Florence. He was a member of Calvary Baptist Church. He was a Navy veteran of World War II. Survivors are: his wife, Mrs. Virginia DuBose Smoak of Lake City; two daughters, Martha S. Coleman of Scranton; and Donna Faye Matthews of Pamplico; one son, Rufus F. Smoak, Jr. of Scranton; and four sisters, Annie Lou Graham of Olanta; and Hazel Busby, Josics McLeod and Nellie Mae Easterling, all of Columbia.
CHARLES COOPER -- Charles Franklin Cooper, 59, died Sat., Aug. 11, 2001, at Wee Tee Plantation in Williamsburg County. Funeral services, conducted by the Rev. Bob Barrows, were held Tues., Aug. 14, 2001, at Pawley's Island Baptist Church. Burial, directed by Mayer Funeral Home, followed at Suttons United Methodist Churchyard. Mr. Cooper was born Dec. 27, 1941, in Kingstree, a son of the late Robert Peter Cooper and Nettie Knight Cooper. He was a member of Trinity United Methodist Church in Andrews. Cooper was a graduate of Williamsburg High School, Wingate University, and the Medical University of SC College of Pharmacy. He began his career as a pharmacy intern at Reynolds Drug Store in Andrews. In 1966, he founded the Pharmacy at Georgetown Memorial Hospital and continued to serve as director of pharmacy and financial management at the hospital. He was also founder of Winyah Dispensary and Winyah Health Care Group and a founding board member of NeighborCare Pharmacy Service, where he currently served as a member of the executive committee for NeighborCare Long Term Care Pharmacy and as a member for the Therapeutics and Outcome Team for NeighborCare. He was a former National Consultant to Med-Central Urgent Care Centers of Kindercare Corp. in Montgomery, AL, and was consultant of emergency preparedness of the Division of Emergency Health Services in Washington, DC. He also owned a number of healthcare facilities and other businesses in SC. Cooper was "Entrepreneur of the Year for Health Care" in 1993, "Pharmacist of the Year" in 1981 for the state of South Carolina, and "Hospital Pharmacist of the Year" in 1981 for the SC Society of Hospital Pharmacists. He served on the board of the Medical University of SC Health Science Foundation and was a founder of the Georgetown Memorial Hospital Foundation and Endowment Board. In addition, Cooper was a Fellow of American Society of Consultant Pharmacists, the SC Society of Hospital Pharmacists, the National Association of Pharmacists and the Grand Strand Pharmaceutical Association of SC and also a member of MUSC Pharmacy Alumni Association. He was on the administrative and management staff of Georgetown Memorial Hospital and was currently serving on the advisory boards of Parke-Davis, Schering, Merck and Pfizer Labs and GeriMed. Cooper, a founder of Wachesaw Plantation and Golf Resort, served on the Executive Committee of Plantation Financial Co. and was also a founder of First Savings Bank in Greenville. He was the Ambassador for Economic Development for Georgetown County in 1999 and also served on the Waccamaw Private Industry Council for Georgetown, Williamsburg and Horry Counties. Survivors are: his wife, Carol Clemons Cooper of Pawley's Island; two sons, Charles "Chuck" F. Cooper, Jr. and Gary C. Cooper, both of Pawley's Island; two daughters, Gina Cooper of Ballentine; and Christy C. Whitlock of Pawley's Island; two brothers, R. P. Cooper, Jr. and Donald E. Cooper, of Andrews.
CARROLL CANNON, SR. -- Funeral services for Carroll Edward Cannon, Sr., 71, were held Wed., Aug. 8, 2001, at Rosewood Baptist Church. Burial, directed by Dunbar Funeral Home, Devine Street Chapel, followed at Greenlawn Memorial Park. Mr. Cannon died Monday, Aug. 6, 2001. Born in Kingstree, he was a son of the late George Harmon Cannon, Sr., and Mellie Mims Cannon. He served in the US Army during the Korean Conflict and received the Purple Heart. Retired from Sylvan Jewelers after 35 years, he was a member of Gideon International and Rosewood Baptist Church. Survivors are: his wife, Ernestine Blakely Cannon; children, Carroll Edward "Eddie" Cannon, Jr. of Columbia; Jane C. Morton of Jacksonville, NC; June Bush of Fort Mill; Dickey Johnson of Columbia; Karl Johnson of Heath Springs; Nancy Starnes of Rock Hill; and Frankie and Monty Rape of Lancaster; brothers, Manuel Cannon, Ronnie Cannon and Carnell Cannon of Georgetown; Larry Cannon of Andrews; Jeepy Cannon of Kingstree; Johnny Cannon of Pamplico; and Vernon Cannon of Wichita Falls, TX.
ROBERT A. MCKNIGHT -- Funeral services, conducted by Father Gerald Ward, for Robert Allen McKnight, 36, of West Columbia, were held Thurs., Aug. 16, 2001, at Our Lady of Hills Catholic Church. Burial, directed by Thompson Funeral Home, followed at Smith Cemetery in Cades. Mr. McKnight died Sat., Aug. 11, 2001. Born in Charleston, the son of James C. and Marie Destefano McKnight of Kingstree. He was employed by Tanner Industries. He was a US Army Veteran. Survivors are: his parents; one daughter, Jennifer M. McKnight of Gaston; one sister, Debbie Smith of Charlotte, NC; three brothers, James McKnight of Hartsville; Kenneth McKnight of Goose Creek; and Charles "Lucky" McKnight of West Columbia; and his fiancee, Allison Geloewski of West Columbia.
OZIE ACKERMAN -- Ozie Gertrude Lambert Ackerman, 80, died Mon., Aug. 20, 2001, at Georgetown Memorial Hospital. Funeral services were held Wed., Aug. 22, 2001, at the Earles Pentecostal Holiness Church. Burial, directed by Andrews Chapel of McKenzie Funeral Home, followed at the church cemetery. Mrs. Ackerman was born May 6, 1921, in Williamsburg County, a daughter of Ervin M. Lambert, Sr. and Minnie Johnson Lambert. She was a graduate of Williamsburg High School, a finishing supervisor for Seconds Department of Oneita Industry and a member of the Earles Pentecostal Holiness Church, where she served as music director for many years. Survivors are: her husband, Lloyd Horace Ackerman, Sr. of Andrews; two sons: the Rev. Lloyd H. Ackerman, Jr. of West Columbia; and Ronald David Ackerman, Sr. of Andrews; three daughters: Shirley Lambert and Lois Davis, both of Andrews and Mary Anne Richardson of Georgetown; and one brother, the Rev. S. Cecil Lambert of Timmonsville.
