ARTHUR CARRAWAY, SR. -- Arthur L. "Buddy" Carraway, Sr., 65, died Mon., Aug. 20, 2001, in a Florence hospital. Funeral services were conducted Wed. Aug. 22, 2001, in the Brockington Funeral Home Chapel. Burial, directed by Brockington Funeral Home, followed at Friendfield Pentecostal Holiness Church Cemetery. Mr. Carraway was born in Coward, a son of the late Monroe and Louise Matthews Carraway. He was employed by Aubrey Cox Trucking of Coward. Survivors are: one daughter, Frankie Duncan of Andrews; five sons, Arthur L. Carraway, Jr. of Hemingway; Jeffery Carraway of Effingham; Michael Carraway of Scranton; Mark Carraway of Brittons Neck; and Marvin Keith Carraway of Coward; and one sister, Margie Altman of Johnsonville.

HARRIETT MITCHUM -- Harriett Virginia Broadway Mitchum, 64, widow of John Eldridge Mitchum, died Tuesday, August 21, 2001, in Manning. Memorial services, conducted by her grandson, the Rev. Kevin Cribb, were held Sat., Aug. 25, 2001, at Stephens Funeral Home in Manning. Born May 24, 1937, in Paxville, she was a daughter of the late James Herbert Broadway and Frances Marion Geddings Broadway. She was a retired supervisor for Summerton Apparel and a member of Trueway Holiness Church in Manning. Survivors are: her companion, Claude David Fowler of Alcolu; three sons, Henry F. Mitchum of Summerton; Don E. Mitchum and John T. Mitchum, of Alcolu; two daughters, Jackie M. DuBose and Frances M. Pillsbury, of Manning; and three brothers, Bill Broadway of High Point, NC; Wayne Broadway and Jimmy Broadway of Manning.

RUTH MACK -- Funeral services for Ruth A. Mack, conducted by the Rev. Bonus Miller, were held Thursday, August 23, 2001, at Mt. Zion Baptist Church in Greeleyville. Burial, directed by Dimery and Rogers Funeral Home, followed at the church cemetery. Ms. Mack, 90, died Friday, August 17, 2001, at Carolinas Hospital System-Florence. She was born November 4, 1908, in Williamsburg County, a daughter of the late Burgess and Mariah Mack. She was a member of Mt. Zion Baptist Church, where she served in the senior choir. She was employed as a domestic worker. Surviving is one son, Sam Mack of Kingstree.

ANNA BENSON -- Funeral services for Mrs. Anna Lawrence Benson, conducted by the Rev. Willie Wilson, were held Monday, August 27, 2001, at Mt. Zion United Methodist Church. Burial, directed by Dimery and Rogers Funeral Home, followed at Greenlawn Cemetery. Mrs. Benson, 82, died Fri., Aug. 24, 2001, at her residence in Kingstree. She was born July 26, 1919, in Salters, a daughter of the late Robert Lawrence and Addie Felder. She was a graduate of Tomlinson High School. She received her bachelor's of arts in education and English from Allen University in Columbia and furthered her studies at SC State University and the University of South Carolina. She taught English at St. John's in Trio, Tomlinson High School, and Kingstree Senior High School, both in Kingstree. She was a member of the NAACP and a former member of the Retired Teachers' Association. She was a member of Mt. Zion United Methodist Church and served on the Library Committee. Survivors are: her husband, Willie Benson of Kingstree; two sisters, Mrs. Lillie Mae Williams of Salters and Mrs. Rebecca Johnson of Carelton, GA; and a foster daughter, Mrs. Barbara Major (Josh) of Cades.

HARRY JAMES -- Funeral services for Harry Joe James were held Tuesday, September 4, 2001, at Antioch Baptist Church in Kingstree. Burial, directed by Dimery and Rogers Funeral Home, followed at Florence National Cemetery in Florence. Mr. James, 54, died Sunday, August 26, 2001, at King County Hospital in Brooklyn, NY. He was born May 19, 1947, in Kingstree, a son of Hollie James and Lurena Cooper James. He was a 1965 graduate of George W. Wingate High School in New York City, NY, and continued his education in computer programming. He was a veteran of the US Army and served in the Vietnam War. Survivors, in addition to his parents, are: his wife, Mrs. Barbara James of Queens, NY; one son, Joseph Moses James of Kingstree; two daughters, Richell James and Denita James, both of Brooklyn, NY; one brother, Rasheen James of Corpus Christi, TX; and his grandmother, Mrs. Mary Ann Cooper of Brooklyn, NY.

FREDDIE GRAHAM -- Funeral services for Freddie Graham, conducted by the Rev. Jonathan Brown, were held Tues., Aug. 28, 2001, at Elijah United Methodist Church in Kingstree. Burial, directed by Dimery and Rogers Funeral Home, followed at the churchıs cemetery. Mr. Graham, 59, died Tues., Aug. 21, 2001, at North Shore Hospital in Miami, FL. He was born Feb. 15, 1942, in Williamsburg County, a son of the late Rosa Fulton Graham and Mose Graham and of his step-mother Mrs. Mary McKnight Graham. He was a member of Elijah United Methodist Church. He was employed by Coca Cola Bottling Co. for 18 years. Survivors are: his wife, Mrs. Earnestine Joseph Graham; two daughters Mrs. Valarie Lindsey and Mrs. Freda Williams, both of Miami, FL; two sons, Freddie Graham, Jr. and Laven Graham, both of Miami, FL; ten sisters, Nancy Pressley, Jannie Evans, Earline Cooper, Barbara Graham, Deloris McLeod and Dorothy Bull, all of Kingstree; Moretta Williams of Nesmith, Cherrie Lease Padgett of Philadelphia, PA, Mary Lou Mathis of Miami, FL, and Rose Keels of Greeleyville; eight brothers, Willie Graham and Ernest Graham, both of Kingstree; John Dillion McKnight of Baltimore, MD, Truman Graham, Roosevelt Graham, John Henry Graham and Perry Graham, all of Miami, FL; and Charles Edward Graham of Tampa, FL.

MAYBANK McCULLOUGH -- Funeral services for Maybank McCullough, conducted by James Nesmith, were held Thursday, August 16, 2001, at Old Mt. Olive Missionary Baptist Church. Burial, directed by McClary Funeral Home, followed at Old Mt. Olive Baptist Church Cemetery. Mr. McCullough, a former employee of Baxter Laboratories, died August 9, 2001, at Strong Memorial Hospital in Rochester, NY. He was born August 4, 1947, in Williamsburg County, a son of the late Robert Dewey McCullough and Maggie Mitchum McCullough. He was a member of Old Mt. Olive Missionary Baptist Church. Survivors are: three daughters, TaWanda McCullough, Mrs. Sheka Skipper and Kecha McCullough, all of Lake City; one son, Rodney McCullough of Johnsonville; three brothers, Felder McCullough, Harry McCullough and Willard McCullough, all of Kingstree; and seven sisters, Mrs. Lerline Scott, Annie Mae McCullough and Mrs. Maggie Pressley, all of Kingstree; Mrs. Rosa Bell Nesmith of Nesmith; Mrs. Gertrude Driffin and Mrs. Iona Cuyler, both of Rochester, NY; and Mrs. Inell Marshall of Brooklyn, NY.

DOROTHY SWETLITZ -- Dorothy Marcus Swetlitz, 81, wife of Louis Swetlitz, died Sunday, September 2, 2001, in a St. Stephen nursing facility. Funeral services were held Tuesday, September 4, 2001, at Temple Beth Or. Burial, directed by Williamsburg Funeral Home, followed at Beth Or Cemetery. Mrs. Swetlitz was born in Philadelphia, PA, a daughter of Ida and Harry Rosen. She was retired owner of Marcus Department Store in Kingstree. She was a member of Temple Beth Or, Beth Or Sisterhood, and B'nai Brith. She was first married to the late Herman "Hymie" Marcus. Survivors, in addition to her husband of Atlanta, GA, are: one son, David Marcus of Kingstree; two daughters, Gail M. Genderson of Richmond, VA; and Shelly M. Brenner of Cherry Hill, NJ; and one sister, Lillian Silver of N. Miami Beach, FL.

LEVERN BENBOW -- Funeral services for Levern Burgess Benbow were conducted by the Rev. B. L. Green, Tuesday, September 4, 2001, at St. Paul A.M.E. Church in Kingstree. Burial, directed by Redmond-Richardson Funeral Home, followed at the churchyard cemetery. Mr. Benbow, 38, died Wednesday, August 29, 2001, in Lake Charles, LA, after injuries sustained in an automobile accident. He was born Nov. 24, 1962, in Kingstree, a son of Mrs. Thelma Burgess Benbow and the late Edward K.P. Benbow. He was married to Frederica Alston. Mr. Benbow was a 1981 graduate of Kingstree Senior High School. He was a member of Saint John African Methodist Episcopal Church. He enlisted in the United States Army on September 4, 1981 and was honorably discharged on September 30, 1987. For a number of years, he was employed by Computer Graphics in Leesville, LA. Survivors, in addition to his mother of Kingstree, are: one son, Courtney Wallace of Kingstree; one sister, Daisy Benbow of Kingstree; and one step-daughter, Dan'elle Alston of Kingstree.

LOTTIE McCREA -- Funeral services for Mrs. Lottie Cooper McCrea were conducted by Bishop L. H. Burns, Sat., Sept. 8, 2001, at Union United American Freewill Baptist Church. Burial, directed by Redmond-Richardson Funeral Home, followed at Elijah United Methodist Church Cemetery. Mrs. McCrea, 68, died Sun., Sept. 2, 2001, at Carolinas Hospital System-Florence. She was born Feb. 8, 1933, in Kingstree, a daughter of Eugene "Son" and Marie Harrison Cooper. She graduated from Tomlinson High School. She was a member of Union American Freewill United Baptist Church, where she served on the Senior Usher Board, senior choir, Kitchen Committee and was financial secretary of the church. She was also the financial secretary for the Conference and a member of the Board of Trustees. She was married to the late James McCrea. Survivors are: two sons, Levern Cooper and Erneal Cooper, Sr., both of Kingstree; two sisters, Mrs. Marguerite Brown of Cades; and Mrs. Christine Brockington of Kingstree.
