Posted By: GenealogyBuff.com Carl RIDGLE -- Carl McDowell Ridgle, 73, husband of Pauline Barnes Ridgle, died Wed., Sept. 26, 2001, at his home in Greeleyville. Funeral services, conducted by the Rev. Francis "Buddy" Jones and the Rev. Sarah Jones, were held Fri., Sept. 28, 2001, at Greeleyville Church of God. Burial, directed by Stephens Funeral Home, followed at Mt. Hope Cemetery. Born Oct. 15, 1927, in Coward, he was a son of the late Johnny M. and Edith Dority Ridgle. He was retired from the Town of Greeleyville and was a former member of Greeleyville Church of God. Survivors, in addition to his wife of Greeleyville, are: one son, Carl M. "Bubba" Ridgle, Jr. of Manning; five daughters, Dorothy Moore and Patricia Graham of Kingstree; Betty McCall of Alcolu; Mary Branham of Greeleyville; and Deborah Ciehanski of Kirksville, MO; and one brother Luther Ridgle, of Andrews.
EMMA THOMAS -- Mrs. Emma Susan Disher Thomas, 85, widow of Hollie John Thomas, died Sat., Sept. 29, 2001, at her residence. Graveside services, conducted by the Rev. Morris Smith and directed by Williamsburg Funeral Home, were held Mon., Oct. 1, 2001, at Kingstree Memorial Gardens. Mrs. Thomas was a daughter of the late Louis and Mary B. Disher. She retired after 30 years as an employee of Williamsburg County Memorial Hospital. She was a Baptist. Survivors are: two daughters, Patricia Powell of Florence; and Judy Poplin of Kingstree; two sons, H.L. Thomas of Manning; and Francis Thomas of Los Angeles, CA; one brother, Lindbergh Thomas of Sumter; and two sisters, Ruth Cliff and Teresa Faulk, both of Wilmington, NC.
MARIAN BYRD -- Marian Mims Byrd, 78, widow of J.S. Byrd, Jr., died Sat., Nov. 10, 2001, at her home. Graveside funeral services, directed by Williamsburg Funeral Home, were held Mon., Nov. 12, 2001, at Kingstree Memorial Gardens. Mrs. Byrd was born in Lane, a daughter of the late Charles Marion Mims and Mrs. Jane Brown Mims. She was a graduate of Kingstree High School and attended the University of South Carolina. She was a food program specialist for the US Dept. of Agriculture from 1942 to 1985 for Kingstree, Florence and Columbia. She was a member of Williamsburg Presbyterian Church.
HAZEL GAMBLE -- Funeral services for Hazel "Son" Gamble, conducted by the Rev. Roosevelt Geddis, were held Sat., Nov. 10, 2001, at St. John United Methodist Church in Lake City. Burial, directed by Samuels and Richardson Funeral Home, followed at McKenzie Cemetery. Mr. Gamble, 82, died Mon., Nov. 5, 2001, at the Ronald E. McNair Nursing Facility in Lake City.
WILLIE BURGESS -- Funeral services for Deacon Willie James Burgess, conducted by the Rev. Samuels Burgess, were held Sat., Nov. 10, 2001, at Greater St. Stephens Baptist Church. Burial, directed by Samuels and Richardson Funeral Home, followed at Rest Lawn Memorial Park. Deacon Burgess died Mon., Nov. 5, 2001, at his residence in Lake City.
JANIE GREENWOOD -- Funeral services for Mrs. Janie Mae Hughee Greenwood, conducted by the Rev. Joseph Covin, were held Wed., Nov. 7, 2001, at St. Mary A.M.E. Church. Burial, directed by Dimery and Rogers Funeral Home, followed at the churchıs cemetery. Mrs. Greenwood, 84, died Thurs., Nov. 1, 2001, at Georgetown Hospital in Washing-ton, D.C. She was born Aug. 27, 1917, in Salters, a daughter of the late Dave Hughee and Mary Swinton Hughee. She was a member of Freewill Baptist Church in Washington, D.C. Survivors are: two sons, Roy Thomas of Salters; and Rene Thomas of Houston, TX; one daughter, Mrs. Mary Thomas of Clinton, SC; and one sister, Mrs. Flossie Luvenia McFadden of Salters.
EUGENE SAMUEL -- Funeral services for Eugene Samuel, conducted by the Rev. Frank Ford, were held Sat., Nov. 10, 2001, at St. John A.M.E. Church. Burial, directed by Dimery and Rogers Funeral Home, followed at the churchıs cemetery. Mr. Samuel, 66, died Mon., Nov. 5, 2001, at Carolinas Hospital System-Florence. He was born Mar. 10, 1935, in Nesmith, a son of the late George Samuel and Elizabeth Samuel. He was married to the late Mrs. Annie Laurie Wilson Samuel. He retired from the Kodak Company in New York. He was a member of St. John A.M.E. Church. Survivors are: six sons, Lamar Samuel, Eugene Samuel, Jr., Orlando Samuel, Michael Anthony Samuel, all of Rochester, NY; Jonathan Rutledge of Wisconsin; and Raymond Samuel of Kingstree; two daughters, Lisa Samuel of Charlotte, NC; and Rachel Hill of Rochester, NY; one brother, the Rev. Thomas Samuel of Andrews; one sister, Christine Dickerson of Rochester, NY; and his mother-in-law, Minnnie Wilson of Kingstree.
JUANITA CAULDER -- Juanita Williamson Caulder, 87, widow of James Ernest Caulder, died Sat., Nov. 10, 2001, at McNair Nursing Center. Graveside funeral services, directed by Brockington Funeral Home, were Mon., Nov. 12, 2001, at Williamson Cemetery. Mrs. Caulder was born in Williamsburg County, a daughter of the late Needham and Molly McCutcheon Williamson. She was a graduate of Hebron High School and she also retired as the cafeteria supervisor from Hebron High School. She was a member of Hebron Independent Church. Survivors are: two daughters, Jennye Caulder Eaddy of Kingstree; and Harriette Graham Cannon of Turbeville; one son, James Ernest Caulder, Jr. of Kingstree; and one brother, Varnadore Williamson of Norfolk, VA.
ALTON McCULLOUGH, SR. -- Alton Hale McCullough, Sr., 80, died Wed., Nov. 7, 2001, in a Charleston hospital. Graveside funeral services, directed by Williamsburg Funeral Home, were held Thurs., Nov. 8, 2001, at Union Presbyterian Church Cemetery. Mr. McCullough was born in Lane, a son of John Arthur McCullough and Elizabeth Eason McCullough. He was a graduate of Kingstree High School and was a Naval Flight Instructor during World War II. He was retired from Koppers Company, Inc. and was a member of Williamsburg Presbyterian Church. He was the mayor of Lane and a former member of Lane Presbyterian Church, where he served as both deacon and elder. He was a longstanding director of the Lane Industrial Develop-ment Corp. and was longtime supporter of the USC athletic program. He was life member of Inglesby Lodge #267 AFM in Greeleyville, a 32nd degree Scottish Rite Mason and a member of the Omar Shrine Temple in Charleston. Survivors are: his wife, Blanche Gamble McCullough of Kingstree; one son, Alton H. McCullough, Jr., of Mt. Pleasant; and one sister, Marguerite McCullough Appleby of Florence.
MAE BROWN -- Funeral services for Ms. Mae "Mary Alice" Brown, conducted by the Rev. Hermon Gibson, Jr., were held Saturday, October 27, 2001 at the Cedar Grove Baptist Church. Burial, directed by Redmond-Richardson Funeral Home, followed in the churchyard cemetery. Ms. Brown, 60, died Tuesday, October 23, 2001 in a Florence hospital. She was born in the Spring Gully Community of Andrews on September 11, 1941, the daughter of the late Reggie and Eliza Scoot Brown. She attended the public schools of Williamsburg County and was a member of Cedar Grove Baptist Church. Surviving are: three sons, Gerald Brown of Kingstree, Russell Brown of Hollywood, FL; and Rodney Brown of Miami, FL; two daughters, Ms. Elizabeth "Cookie" McClam and Mrs. Claudia Singletary, both of Kingstree; a foster daughter, Mrs. Jerletha Chatman of Kingstree; two sisters, Earlene Seabrooks of the home and Mrs. Louise Wright of Rochester, NY.
