Posted By: GenealogyBuff.com MADELINE LYERLY -- Madeline Coker Lyerly, 82, widow of S. Orum Lyerly, died Wed., Oct. 3, 2001. Graveside funeral services, directed by Morris Funeral Home, were held Fri., Oct. 5, 2001, at the Powell Cemetery. Mrs. Lyerly was born in Lake City, a daughter of S. Waynie Coker and Janie Kirby Coker. She was a graduate of Lander College. She retired from Johnsonville High School She was a member of Little Star Original Free Will Baptist Church. Survivors are: one son, Denson Lyerly of Timmonsville; one daughter, Trudy L. Ham of Florence; and three sisters, Louisa C. Tyler of Kingstree; Ola Mae Welch and Myrtle Cook both of Lake City.
ASHLEY HOUSTON -- Ashley Houston, 55, died Thurs., Sept. 20, 2001, at his home. Funeral services were held Tuesday, Sept. 25, 2001, at St. Paul United Methodist Church. Burial, directed by Kingstree Funeral Home, followed at Greenlawn Cemetery. Mr. Houston was born Nov. 15, 1945, in Williamsburg County, a son of the late Willie Houston and Pearlie Strong Houston. He was a member of St. Paul United Methodist Church. He worked at Lexington Brand of Kingstree and lately, was self-employed as an entrepreneur/landscaper. Survivors are: his wife, Rachel D. Houston; four daughters, Latoya Johnson of Cherry Point, NC; Sharon H. James and Rayetta Houston of Rochester, NY; Flosscene Brown of Kingstree; three sons, TeShawn Jenkins of Lake City; Ashley Houston, Jr. of Hemingway; and Lorenzo Wall of Kingstree; three brothers, Willard Houston, Joe Houston and Clarence Pressley, all of Kingstree; and two sisters, Loraine McClary of Fort Washington, MD; and Hattie Pressley of Kingstree.
LaBESSIE ROBINSON -- Funeral services for Mrs. LaBessie E. C. Robinson, conducted by the Rev. Eugene Burgess, were held Mon., Oct.8, 2001, at Mt. Moriah Baptist Church in Scranton. Burial, directed by Samuels and Richardson Funeral Home, followed at Lee Cemetery. Mrs. Robinson, 57, died Mon., Oct. 1, 2001. She was born Jan. 31, 1944, in Florence County, a daughter of Mrs. Sarah K. Eaddy and the late William Eaddy, Sr. She was employed for a number of years at Brooklyn Jewish Hospital. Survivors are: her husband, George Robinson of the home; one son, Lawris J. Eaddy of Lake City; six brothers and sisters, William Eaddy, Jr., Lee Edward Eaddy, Maudestine Eaddy and Lelia E. Fulmore, all of Scranton; Mrs. Carolyn Shaw of Brooklyn, NY; and Mrs. Sarah E. Williams of Lake City; and her mother-in-law, Mrs. Louise Raleigh of Manning.
JIM CHERRY, SR. -- Services for Jim Marion Cherry, 93, were held Thurs., Oct. 11, 2001, at First Baptist Church, Boyce Chapel in Columbia. Burial, directed by Dunbar Funeral Home, Devin Street Chapel, followed at Greenlawn Memorial Park. Mr. Cherry, husband of the late Anne Dyer Cherry, died Oct. 8, 2001. Born July 2, 1908, in Sumter, he was the son of Martha O. Thomasson Cherry and Robert S. Cherry. He was a graduate of Sumter High School and Furman University and also held an M.Ed. Degree from Teachers College, Columbia University. He was a school administrator in Edgefield County and later was Superintendent of the John DeLa Howe School in McCormick, SC. He served as Director of Public Relations for the SC Education Association, Superintendent and Business Manager of the SC Area Trade Schools, Chief of the Division of the Blind for the SC Department of Public Welfare and President of the Baptist Foundation of SC and a member of First Baptist Church of Columbia. Civic activities included positions as District Governor of Lions International and as International Director from 1961 to 1962. He was also a Director of SC Cancer Society, President of the SC State Employees Association and a Director of the SC Rehabilitation Association. He was a member of the SC Lions Sight Conservation Association Board, the YMCA Board and Chairman of the Board of Ocean City Life Insurance Co. Survivors are: four sons, Jim Marion Cherry, Jr., of Kingstree; George William Cherry and Robert Bernard Cherry of Sumter and Charles Maurice Cherry of Greenville; and one sister, Bleka Anita Cherry Kolb of Liberty.
WILLIAM WARREN -- Funeral services for William Joseph Warren, conducted by Bishop Willie Warren, were held Thurs., Oct. 11, 2001, at Howard Grove Holiness Church in Kingstree. Burial, directed by Henryhand Funeral Home, followed at Broughton Cemetery. Mr. Warren died Tues., Oct. 2, 2001, at Island Medical Center in Hempstead, NY. He was born Jan. 21, 1947, in Greeleyville, a son of the late Rev. Preston David Warren and Mary Elizabeth Broughton Warren. He was a member of Howard Grove Holiness Church. He joined the United States Air Force and served in the Vietnam War. Survivors are: one daughter, Diane Marie Brown of New York; six brothers, David Warren, Isaac Warren and Freddy Warren, all of Roosevelt, NY; Bishop Willie John Warren of Greeleyville; Michael Warren of Greenville; and Melvin Warren of Darlington; and three sisters, Mary Alice Mason of Freeport, NY; Betty Warren and Shirley Cross, both of Greeleyville.
EDITH W. REYNOLDS -- Mrs. Edith W. Reynolds, widow of Preston Reynolds, 83, died Mon., Oct. 8, 2001 in a Manning hospital. Funeral services were held Friday, Oct. 12, in the Williamsburg Funeral Home Chapel. Burial, directed by Williamsburg Funeral Home, took place in Kingstree Memorial Gardens. Mrs. Reynolds was born in Mississippi, a daughter of Annie Manning and William Walker. She attended school in Mississippi and was a home nurse for many years. She was a member of Lane Baptist Church. Survivors are: two daughters, Evelyn Copeland of Braxton, MS and Elsie Grace Walters (Skippy) of Manning; one son, Corbit Reynolds of Mill Springs, NC; and one sister, Merle Williams of Terry, MS.
ALTON CURTIS NEXSEN -- Alton Curtis Nexsen, 53, died Fri. Oct. 12, 2001, at his residence. Funeral services were held Sun. Oct. 14, 2001 in the Williamsburg Funeral Home Chapel, with burial in Kingstree Memorial Gardens. Mr. Nexsen was born in Kingstree, a son of Mrs. Violet Nexsen Davis and the late Elmore Nexsen. He was a graduate of Kingstree High school and was a retired employee of Santee Electric Co-op. Surviving, in addition to his mother and step-father, Jimmy Davis of Kingstree, are: his wife, Shelby S. Nexsen of Kingstree; one special nephew, Curtis Green of Kingstree; one sister, Gail Lee of Kingstree; and one brother, Jerry E. Nexsen of Manning.
ELOISE MILLER -- Eloise Dennis Miller, 79, wife of Melvin Miller, Sr., died Fri., Oct. 12, 2001, at Williamsburg Medical Center in Kingstree. Funeral services, conducted by the Rev. Freddie Gaymon and the Rev. Darrel Langston, were held Sun., Oct. 14, 2001, at Greeleyville Freewill Baptist Church. Burial, directed by Stephens Funeral Home, followed at Greeleyville Baptist Church Cemetery. Born May 4, 1922, in Greeleyville, she was a daughter of the late Cokley and Molsie W. Dennis. She was retired from Kingstree Manufacturing Co. and was a member of Greeleyville Freewill Baptist Church. Survivors, in addition to her husband of Greeleyville, are: one son, Melvin T. "Tommy" Miller, Jr., of Greeleyville; one daughter, Carolyn McKnight of Greeleyville; and one sister, Cora G.White of Greeleyville.
ELIZABETH BROCKINGTON -- Elizabeth Mixon Brockington died Sun., Oct. 14, 2001, at her residence. Funeral services were held Tuesday, October, 16, 2001, at Kingstree United Methodist Church. Burial, directed by Brockington Funeral Home, followed at Kingstree Memorial Gardens. Mrs. Brockington was born in Sumter, a daughter of the late Oscar and Betty G. Mixon. She was a graduate of Kingstree High School and attended Columbia College. She was a secretary, pianist for Millwood United Methodist Church, a member of Three Rivers Society and a member of Kingstree United Methodist Church. Surviving is her husband, John David Brockington of Kingstree.
DWIGHT ADAMS -- Funeral services for Dwight Adams, conducted by the Rev. Franklin Fulmore, Sr., were held Fri., Oct. 12, 2001, at St. Paul A.M.E. Church in Cades. Burial, directed by Redmond-Richardson Funeral Home, followed at Poston Cemetery. Mr. Adams, 40, formerly of Cades, died Tues., Oct. 9, 2001, at the Henry Medical Center in Stockbridge, GA. He was born June 18, 1961, in Williamsburg County, a son of Mrs. Ruthie Lee Adams and the late James "Jay" R. Adams, Sr. He attended school in Newport News, VA, and was currently in school in McDonough, GA. Survivors, in addition to his mother of Cades, are: a niece with whom he resided, Leatha "Lisa" Adams; four sisters, Mrs. Barbara Tullis of Queens, NY; Easter Adams and Deloris Adams, both of Cades; Nadine Wilson of Kingstree; and three brothers, Roger Adams, Jr., of Brooklyn, NY; Harry Adams of Newark, NJ; and Melvin Adams of Cades.
