AGNES WHACK -- Funeral services for Mrs. Agnes Julia Gourdine Whack, conducted by the Rev. Talbert Dickson, were held Sat., Oct. 13, 2001, at St. John Missionary Baptist Church in Greeleyville. Burial, directed by Redmond-Richardson Funeral Home, followed at St. John Missionary Baptist Church Cemetery. Mrs. Whack, 85, died Tues., Oct. 9, 2001, at Roper Berkeley Day Hospital in Moncks Corner. She was born Aug. 18, 1916, in Williamsburg County, a daughter of the late Harvey Gourdine and Italine M. Gourdine. She was an active member of St. John Missionary Baptist Church. She was married to the late Blease Whack. Survivors are: one daughter, Mrs. Rose Marie Keels of the home; and one step-brother, James Albert McKnight of Thomasville, NC.

KEITH GILES -- Funeral services for Keith Levon Giles were held Sat., Oct. 13, 2001, at C.E. Murray High School in Greeleßyville. Burial, directed by Dimery and Rogers Funeral Home, followed at Big Spring Cemetery. Mr. Giles, 19, died Mon., Oct. 8, 2001, in Sumter County. He was born Oct. 4, 1982, in Sumter, a son of Sam W. Giles and Wanda O. Giles. He was a 2000 graduate of C.E. Murray High School. He was a student at Midlands Technical College in Columbia. He was a member of Antioch Baptist Church. Survivors, in addition to his parents, of Greeleyville, are: one brother, Kevin Giles of Columbia; two sisters, Samantha Giles of Greeleyville and Vernessa Sabb of Columbia; his paternal grandparents, William Giles and Mary L. Giles, both of Lane; and his maternal grandparents, Julius Oliver and Lillie Mae Oliver, both of Greeleyville.

WILLIE COKER, JR. -- Willie W. (Peepsie) Coker, Jr., 59, died Tuesday, December 25, 2001, in a Kingstree hospital. Funeral services were held Thursday, December 27, 2001, at Broad Swamp Pentecostal Holiness Church. Burial, directed by Williamsburg Funeral Home, followed in the church cemetery. Mr. Coker was born in Clarendon County, a son of Mrs. Vender Miles Coker Burkett and the late Willie W. Coker, Sr. He attended Kingstree High School and was a retired auto parts salesman. Survivors, in addition to his mother of Kingstree, are: his step-father, Walter L. Burkett of Kingstree; three daughters, Julie Lambert and Cindy Coker, both of Florence; and Lynn Burgess of Kingstree; and one step-brother, Raymond Burkett of Florence.

TANZERENE COOPER -- Funeral services for Mrs. Tanzerene Cooper, conducted by the Rev. Lowell O. Greene, were held Saturday, December 15, 2001, at St. Paul A.ME. Church in Kingstree. Burial, directed by Henryhand Funeral Home, followed at Elijah United Methodist Churchyard Cemetery. Mrs. Cooper died Monday, December 10, 2001, at Carolinas Hospital System-Lake City. She was born April 23, 1923, in Williamsburg County, a daughter of the late George Cooper and Lena Barr Cooper. She was a member of St. Paul A.M.E. Church in Kingstree, where she sang in the choir. Survivors are: two daughters, Doris Harris of Indianapolis, IN; and Earlene Faye Pressley of Kingstree; and two sons, John Henry Cooper of Kingstree; and James Cooper, Jr., of Lake City.

OPHELIA ROSE -- Funeral services for Mrs. Ophelia McKenzie Graham Rose, conducted by the Rev. Roosevelt Geddis, were held Monday, December 24, 2001, at St. John United Methodist Church in Lake City. Burial, directed by Samuels and Richardson Funeral Home, followed in McKenzie Cemetery. Mrs. Rose, 64, died Thursday, December 20, 2001, at the Carolinas Hospital System-Lake City. She was born October 9, 1937, in Florence County, a daughter of the late Mr. Willie Joe McKenzie and Mrs. Emma Wilson McKenzie. Mrs. Rose was a lifelong member of St. John United Methodist Church. Survivors are: Her husband, Willie Lee Rose, of the home; three daughters, Mrs. Willie Mae Hampton of Orangeburg, Mrs. Elizabeth Gaston of Lake City and Ms. Rosalonda Baker of Clayton, NC; one son, Jerry Graham of Columbia; four brothers, Willie Joe McKenzie of Florence, Sam McKenzie, William McKenzie and Leo McKenzie, all of Lake City; five sisters Ms. Emma Elizabeth McKenzie of Flushing, NY, Mrs. Florence Corbett of Brooklyn NY, Mrs. Gussie Dubose of Bronx, NY, Mrs. Eloise Baker of Lake City and Mrs. Jannie Dodd of Moore.

WALTER BROWN -- Funeral services for Walter Brown, conducted by the Rev. Melvin Williams, were held Saturday, December 8, 2001, at Greater Jerusalem AME Church in Lane. Burial, directed by Henryhand Funeral Home, followed in the churchyard cemetery. Mr. Brown, husband of Matilda Wilson Brown, was born September 17, 1931, a son of Professor Brown, Sr., and Mrs. Susan Fluitt Brown. Mr. Brown was educated in the schools of Williamsburg County and was an active member of Greater Jerusalem AME Church, where he served as a class leader and a member of the Usher Board. Survivors, in addition to his wife, are: Rebecca Harden, Viola Bryant, Frances George, Janice Brown, Rosetta Greene, Mary Sue Staggers, Shirley Hamlet, Barbara Brown, Deloris Tisdale, Walter James Moore, Eddie L. Moore, Tracie Moore, Pearletha Robinson, Bernetha Shackleford, Trealetha Green, James Wilson, Edith Ann Gamble; five sisters, Charlotte Brown, Ada Henderson, Ida Mae Singleton, Rosa Lee Brown, Vernethea Gary; and one brother, Willie Brown.

ETHER PENDERGRASS -- Funeral services for Mrs. Ether Lene Fulton Pendergrass were held Friday, December 28, 2001, at Good News Deliverance Temple Holiness Church. Burial, directed by Samuels and Richardson Funeral Home, followed in Poston Cemetery. Mrs. Pendergrass, 62, widow of Jeffrey Pendergrass, Sr., died Saturday, December 22, 2001 at McLeod Regional Medical Center in Florence. Mrs. Pendergrass was born February 14, 1939, a daughter of the late George Fulton, Sr., and Mrs. Mary Cooper Fulton. She attended the public schools of Williamsburg County. She was a member of St. Matthew Holiness Church, and later joined St. Mark Holiness Church. Survivors are: four sons, Joseph Pendergrass of the home, Charlie Pendergrass and Wardell Pendergrass, both of Lake City and Jerome Pendergrass of Mobile, AL; five daughters, Ms. Ella Mae Pendergrass and Elderess Myrtle Fulmore, both of Lake City, Mrs. Patricia McFadden and Mrs. Louella Major, both of Cades, and Mrs. Eula McFadden of Olanta; seven sisters, Mrs. Lili Mae McFadden of New York, NY, Mrs. Martha Mouzon of New Jersey, Ms. Marvi Lee Fulton, Mrs. Mary Williams, Mrs. Louise Green, Ms. Betty Scott, Mrs. Johnny Rodgers, all of Florida; and four brothers, Arthur Fulton, David Fulton, Johnny Fulton and George Fulton, Jr., all of Florida.

ARLEAN SWINTON -- Funeral services for Mrs. Arlean Swinton, conducted by the Rev. Virgil Hammet, were held Monday, December 24, 2001, at St. Phillip AME Church in Salters. Burial, directed by Henryhand Funeral Home, followed In St. Mary AME Cemetery. Mrs. Swinton, wife of Isaac O'Neal Swinton, was born in Williamsburg County on July 24, 1939, a daughter of the late Rev. Harris McCrea and Mrs. Martha Smith McCrea. She attended the public schools of Williamsburg County and was an active member of St. Phillip AME Church. Survivors, in addition to her husband, are: four daughters, Dorine Swinton of Bronx, NY, Cathy Mitchum of Andrews, Wanda Crawford of Moncks Corner and Sheila Gibbs of Columbia; four sons, Perry Swinton and Ron Swinton, both of St. Petersburg, FL, Anthony Swinton and Roger Swinton, both of Salters; four sisters, Naomi Darby of Salters, Geneva Rose of Charleston, Betty Gonder of Bronx, NY and Sarah Barr of Salters; and one grandson, Kevin Swinton, whom she reared as her own.

ANNIE EPPS -- Funeral services for Mrs. Annie Ree Matthews Epps, conducted by Bishop Roosevelt Fulton, were held on Sun., Dec. 23, 2001, at Evangelistic Temple Way of the Cross Church in Kingstree. Burial, directed by Dimery and Rogers Funeral Home, followed in St. John Baptist Church Cemetery. Mrs. Epps was born in Williamsburg County on Feb. 6, 1963, a daughter of the late John Asby Matthews and the late Pastor Essie Matthews. She was educated in the Williamsburg County schools and was a member of Evangelistic Temple Way of the Cross Church. Survivors are: her husband, Stanley Epps of Kingstree; four children Stanley Epps, Jr., of Lake City, Mrs. Sandy Jones of Kingstree, Frances M. Epps of Kingtree and Brandy Matthews of Myrtle Beach; three brothers, Freddie Matthews of Kingstree, Ricky Matthews of North Carolina and Elvis Matthews of Kingstree; one sister Diane Robinson of Salters; and her grandfather Randy McKnight, Sr., of Kingstree.

GENIE EPPS -- Funeral services for Mrs. Genie Cunningham Smith, conducted by the Rev. James A. Graham, were held on Sun., Dec. 23, 2001, at Kennedyville United Methodist Church in Nesmith. Burial, directed by Dimery and Rogers Funeral Home, followed in Burroughs Hall Cemetery. Mrs. Smith, widow of Thomas Smith, died Wed., Dec. 19, 2001, at Williamsburg Regional Hospital in Kingstree. She was born in Williamsburg County Aug. 15, 1904, a daughter of the late Joe and Tisby Ann Burroughs Cunningham. She was educated in the Williamsburg County school system and was a member of Friendship United Methodist Church of Nesmith. She later joined Kennedyville United Methodist Church. Mrs. Smith was also a member of Jethro Lodge of Nesmith. She was a farmer and was employed as a caregiver by Mr. and Mrs. Stanley Inman. Survivors are: five grandchildren reared as her own, James "Butch" Cunningham of Nesmith; Robert Harold Cunningham of Bronx, NY, Roland ³Tony² Cunningham of Brooklyn, NY, Ruby C. Haynesworth of Jamaica, NY, and Patty J. Frazier of Philadelphia, PA.
