Posted By: GenealogyBuff.com MARIE POOLE -- Mrs. Marie Smith Poole, 89, widow of John Glenn Poole, died Mon., Aug. 5, 2002, in a Florence hospital. Graveside funeral services were held Fri., Aug. 9, 2002, in the Hebron United Methodist Church Cemetery, directed by Brockington Funeral Home. Mrs. Poole was born in Williamsburg County, a daughter of the late Daniel Herbert and Frances Irene Kennedy Smith. She was a graduate of Hebron High School and was a former bookkeeper for Dixon Lumber Company of Lake City. She retired as bookkeeper from Southern Agricultural Chemical Company of Kingstree. She was a lifetime member of Hebron United Methodist Church and a member of the Order of the Eastern Star in Kingstree. Surviving is one son, John G. Poole, Jr., of Huber Heights, Ohio.
JAMES POWELL -- James David (Jamie) Powell, 39, died Monday, August 5, 2002. Funeral services were held Thursday, August 8, 2002, at the Living Word Ministries Church. Burial, directed by Williamsburg Funeral Home, followed at Gourdines Chapel Cemetery. Mr. Powell was born in Florence County, a son of James Larry and Deloris Irene Powell. He attended Florence County schools and was a truck drive for MJ Trucking Co., in Moncks Corner. He was a member of Living Word Ministries Church. Survivors, in addition to his father of Florida, include: his wife, Wanda Ward Powell of Kingstree; three daughters, Melissa Powell and Kimberly Creel both of Scranton, and Angel Lynch of Johnsonville; three stepchildren, Melissa Bowers and James Turner of Andrews; and Amanda Phillips of Kingstree; two sister, Laina Matthews of Pamplico and Kathy Dee Evans of Prospect.
TONEY NELSON -- Funeral services for Toney Eugene Nelson, conducted by the Rev. Amos Matthews, were held Sat., Aug. 10, 2002, at Dimery and Rogers Funeral Home Chapel. Burial, directed by Dimery and Rogers Funeral Home, followed at Mt. Zion Baptist Church Cemetery. Mr. Nelson, 38, died Aug. 5, 2002, at his home in Greeleyville. He was born March 20, 1964, in Kingstree, a son of Mrs. Florence Burgess-Nelson and the late David D. Nelson. He attended the public schools of Williamsburg County and graduated from C.E. Murray High School. Survivors, in addition to his mother of Greeleyville, are: four children, Antonio Nelson, Joel Nelson, Latoya Nelson and Demetric Nelson, all of Kingstree; four brothers, Carl Burgess, Nathaniel Nelson, Johnnie Lee Nelson and Anthony Nelson, all of Greeleyville; and two sisters, Angela Burgess of Greeleyville; and Patricia Nelson of Detroit, Michigan.
SUDIE COKER -- Sudie Herring Coker, 76, widow of Leonard E. Coker, died Wed., Aug. 7, 2002, in a Sumter hospital. Funeral services were held Sat., Aug. 10, 2002, at Williamsburg Funeral Chapel. Burial, directed by Williamsburg Funeral Home, followed at Kingstree Memorial Gardens. Mrs. Coker was born in Dillon County, a daughter of the late McKiver and Blanch Ratley Herring. She was a member of Kingstree Second Baptist Church. Survivors are: two daughters, Betty B. Watkins of Sumter; and Linda Nesmith of Kingstree; one sister, Edieth Jolly of Sumter; and one brother, Reddy Herring of Sumter.
DR. LUCIOUS PELZER, JR. -- Funeral services for Dr. Lucious Pelzer, Jr., conducted by the Rev. Hansberry, were held Sat., Aug. 10, 2002, at Granger Baptist Church in Elloree. Burial, directed by Samuels and Richardson Funeral Home, followed at the churchyard cemetery. Dr. Pelzer, 50, died Mon., Aug. 5, 2002, in Nashville, Tennessee. He was born Sept. 8, 1951, in Elloree, a son of Mrs. Margaret Pelzer and the late Lucious Pelzer, Sr. He received his formal education in the public schools of Orangeburg County and graduated from Elloree High School. Dr. Pelzer graduated from Claflin College in Orangeburg and MeHerry Medical College in Nashville, Tennessee. Survivors, in addition to his mother of Elloree, are: his wife, Mrs. Ellen A. Pelzer of the home; one brother, Wayne Pelzer of Norfolk, Connecticut; five sisters, Mrs. Annie Zeigler, Bernice Pelzer and Justine Pelzer, all of Elloree; Beverly Pelzer of Eight Mile, Alabama; and Regina Pelzer of the home; and his father-in-law, Frank Frierson of Lake City.
ORIE GRANNISON -- Funeral services for Orie "Bat" Grannison, conducted by the Rev. Samuel Cooper, were held Saturday, August 3, 2002, at Jerusalem United Methodist Church in Salters. Burial, directed by Henryhand Funeral Home, followed at Salters Cemetery. Mr. Grannison died Mon., July 29, 2002, at McLeod Regional Medical Center in Florence. He was born April 16, 1940, to the late Rev. Watson Grannison and Susan Cooper Grannison. He attended St. Matthew Baptist Church of Salters. He was educated in the schools of Williamsburg County. Mr. Grannison was a member of Square Deal Lodge #448. He was employed at Kingstree Knits and Lane General Store and as police chief of Lane. Survivors are: his companion, Ruth Annie Pearson of Lane; four daughters, Martha Mae Grannison of Canada; Linda Wright of Myrtle Beach; Mrs. Sheryl Blackwell of Alcolu; and Tiffany Lee of Charlotte, North Carolina; one daughter reared as his own, Angela Pearson of Lane; two sons, Adam Grannison of Chicago, Illinois; and Calvin Alston of Andrews; two sons he reared as his own, Leroy Pearson of Ladson; and Master Deandre Pearson of Lane; one brother, Watson Grannison of Clearwater, Florida; and one sister, Mrs. Lizzie Wilson of Clearwater, Florida.
LURLENE MURPHY -- Funeral services for Mrs. Lurlene Flagler Murphy, conducted by the Rev. Frank James, were held Tuesday, August 6, 2002, at Dimery and Rogers Funeral Home Chapel of Kingstree. Burial, directed by Dimery and Rogers Funeral Home, followed at St. Paul United Methodist Churchyard Cemetery. Mrs. Murphy, 83, died August 3, 2002, at Kingstree Nursing Facility in Kingstree. She was born in Williamsburg County in August of 1919, a daughter of the late Mrs. Isabell Slyvia Flagler. She was married to the late Elijah Murphy. She attended the public schools of Williamsburg County. Mrs. Murphy was a member of St. Paul United Methodist Church in Kingstree and a member of Home Charity Lodge. She was a retired domestic worker. Surviving is: one sister, Mrs. Lula Mae Scott of Washington, DC.
RANDOLPH WITHERSPOON -- Funeral services for Randolph "Big Daddy" Witherspoon, conducted by the Rev. Lee C. Bines, the Rev. Leverne Witherspoon and the Rev. Lowell O. Greene, were held Monday, July 29, 2002, at Mt. Zion United Methodist Church in Kingstree. Burial, directed by Henryhand Funeral Home, followed at Elijah United Methodist Churchyard Cemetery. Mr. Witherspoon died Wednesday, July 24, 2002, at the Carolinas Hospital System-Florence. He was born Dec. 10, 1939, in Williamsburg County, a son of the late Joe Witherspoon, Sr., and Susie Scott Witherspoon. He received his formal education in the public schools of Williamsburg County. He organized and restructured the young adult choir and it was renamed The Jubilee Choir. He sang for over 20 years with the Original Songs of Joy as one of the lead singers. Mr. Witherspoon also played baseball for several years with the Red Sox. He was employed for more than 20 years at Baxter Lab and G.B. Fermentation. He was also employed by Henryhand Funeral Home. Survivors are: his wife, Mrs. Agnes T. Witherspoon of the home; four daughters, Eva Porchea of Nesmith; Deatrice Thomas of Kingstree; Wanda Witherspoon of Miami, Florida; and Debbie Fleming of Philadelphia, Pennsylvania; three sons, Derrick Witherspoon of the home; Regynold Witherspoon of Kingstree; and Charles Gibson of California; three sisters, Susie Bailey, Sarah Vernell Mitchell and Rachel Witherspoon, all of Philadelphia, Pennsylvania; four brothers, Joe Witherspoon, Jr., and William Witherspoon, both of Philadelphia, Pennsylvania; William H. Witherspoon and Jimmy Witherspoon, both of Kingstree; and his mother-in-law, Mrs. Jane Thomas of Kingstree.
KENNETH FILYAW -- Kenneth Wilbur Filyaw, 43, died Mon., Aug. 19, 2002, from injuries received in an accident. Funeral services were held Wed., Aug. 21, 2002, at Floyd's Chapel Pentecostal Holiness Church. Burial, directed by Brockington Funeral Home, followed at the church cemetery. Mr. Filyaw was born in Florence County, a son of Wilbur and Grethel Mims Filyaw. He was a graduate of Cades-Hebron High School. He was employed by Sumter Utilities as a foreman and also worked with McAllister Motors. He was a member of Floyd's Pentecostal Holiness Church, where he was Sunday School superintendent. Mr. Filyaw was a Little League coach for the Rockies in Kingstree and was a member of Puddin' Swamp Hunting Club. Survivors, in addition to his parents of Cades, are: his wife, Cindy Gause Filyaw of Cades; one son, Myles Kenneth Filyaw of Cades; one daughter, Grace Arlene Filyaw of Cades; one brother, Steve Filyaw of Cades; and one sister, Brenda Miles of Cades.
BETTY ELROD -- Funeral services for Betty R. Elrod, conducted by the Rev. Chuck Walker, were held Fri., Aug. 23, 2002, at Dunbar Funeral Home, Gervais Street Chapel. Burial, directed by Dunbar Funeral Home, followed at Elmwood Memorial Gardens. Mrs. Elrod, 73, widow of Hubert C. Elrod, died Wed., Aug. 21, 2002. Born in Columbia, she was the daughter of the late Mattie Elizabeth Thomas Walker and Richard DesPortes Walker. She was a graduate of Columbia High School, Class of 47, and served as past president of the Columbia Gem and Mineral Society. Survivors are: two sons, Bruce C. Elrod of Ridgeway; and Richard T. Elrod of Hampton Roads, Virginia; one brother, Charles T. Walker of Kingstree; seven grandchildren; and seven great-grandchildren.
