Church in Lane. Burial, directed by Dimery and Rogers Funeral Home, followed at Gordon Cemetery. Mr. Smith, 70, died Fri., Aug. 16, 2002, at his residence in Charleston. He was born in Lane, a son of the late George Smith, Sr., and Edith Gary Smith on July 29, 1932. He was educated in the public schools of Williamsburg County. He was married to the late Mrs. Doris G. Smith. and later married Maggie McNellage. He was a member of Lane Chapel A.M.E. Church. Survivors are: his wife, Mrs. Maggie Smith of the home; one son, Vernon L. Smith of Atlanta, Georgia; one step-son, Samuel McNellage of Kingstree; two daughters, Mrs. Muriel A. Smith and Janice M. Smith, both of Atlanta, Georgia; one brother, Antonio Smith of Washington, DC; four sisters, Mrs. Thelma Dross, Mrs. Ruby Flowers and Jaquelyn Smith, all of Charleston; and Mrs. Irma Lowman of Columbia; one grandchild and four step-grandchildren.
RALPH BURROUGHS -- Funeral services for Ralph Burroughs, conducted by the Rev. Talbert Dickson and the Rev. James Graham, were held Fri., Aug. 23, 2002, at Antioch Baptist Church in Kingstree. Burial, directed by Dimery and Rogers Funeral Home, followed at the church cemetery. Mr. Burroughs, 60, died Fri., Aug. 16, 2002, at Carolinas Hospital System-Florence. He was born in Kingstree, a son of the late Samuel Burroughs and Louise Johnson Burroughs. He was educated in the public schools of Williamsburg County and was employed as a supervisor in Rochester, New York. He was a member of Antioch Baptist Church. Survivors are: one brother, David "DW" William Burroughs of Rochester, New York; three sisters, Flory Burroughs and Mrs. Frances Cray, both of Orlando, Florida; and Mrs. Rosa Graham of Kingstree.
CLANIE SESSIONS -- Funeral services for Evangelist Clanie Garey Sessions, conducted by the Rev. Jesse Marshall, were held Fri., Aug. 23, 2002, at Chavis A.M.E. Church in Hemingway. Burial, directed by Dimery and Rogers Funeral Home, followed at Millpond Cemetery. Mrs. Session, 88, died Tues., Aug. 20, 2002, in Fayetteville, North Carolina. She was born in Suttons, a daughter of the late Elijah and Rosa Thompson Garey. She was the widow of the late Rev. Marvin Wright Sessions. She was a member of Chavis A.M.E. Church, where she served as an assistant pastor. Survivors are: two daughters, Mrs. Valeria Sessions Collins of Fayetteville, North Carolina; Mrs. Ida Sessions Singletary of Pensacola, Florida; one sister, Mrs. Elizabeth Garey Cooper of Andrews; grandchildren and great-grandchildren.
CHRISTINE McCANTS -- Funeral services for Mrs. Christine Dewberry McCants, conducted by the Rev. W. L. Thompson, were held Mon., Aug. 24, 2002, at Mt. Claire Baptist Church in Lake City. Burial, directed by Samuels and Richardson Funeral Home, followed at Rest Lawn Memorial Park. Mrs. McCants, 80, died Thurs., Aug. 22, 2002, at McLeod Regional Center in Florence. She was born Aug. 18, 1922, in Charleston, a daughter of the late Mrs. Lucille Dewberry Brown. She received her formal education in the public schools of Charleston County. She was a member of Mt. Claire Baptist Church, where she was a member of the senior choir. She was married to the late David McCants. Survivors are: one daughter, Marshella McCants of the home; three grandchildren she reared as her own, Charles McCants of Killen, Texas; Joy McCants and Christina McCants, both of Charleston; one sister, Mrs. Myrtle Tisdale of Charleston; one adopted brothers, Junior Harley of Charleston; and six great-grandchildren.
QUEENESTER BYNUM -- Funeral services for Mrs. Queenester Bynum, conducted by the Rev. Melvin Williams, were held Tues., Aug. 27, 2002, at Greater Jerusalem A.M.E. Church in Lane. Burial, directed by Dimery and Rogers Funeral Home, followed at the churchyard cemetery. Ms. Bynum, 49, died Fri., Aug. 23, 2002, at her residence in Lane. She was born in Tampa Bay, Florida, a daughter of Mrs. Liza Jane Burgess McCray and the late Beaufort McCray. She was educated in the public schools of Williamsburg County and Tampa, Florida. She was a former employee of Tupperware. She was a member of Greater Jerusalem A.M.E. Church in Lane, where she was a former Sunday school teacher. Survivors, in addition to her mother of Tampa, Florida, are: her husband, James Bynum of the home; three sons, James Jerome Bynum and Kevin Arthur Bynum, both of Lane; and Nicolas Bynum of Kingstree three brothers, Ronald McCray and Beaufort McCray, both of Tampa, Florida; and Jimmy McCray of Atlanta, Georgia; one sister, Mrs. Elease Brooks of Tampa, Florida; and six granddaughters.
SANDRA AVANT -- Sandra Avant, 56, died Tues., Aug. 13, 2002, in Williamsburg Regional Hospital in Kingstree. Funeral services, conducted by the Rev. W. B. Avant, III, were held Thurs., Aug. 15, 2002, at her residence in Andrews. Burial, directed by Graham Funeral Home, followed at Andrews Memorial Cemetery. Miss Avant was born Sept. 27, 1945, in Williamsburg County, a daughter of Lois Ruby Player Avant and the late William Benjamin Avant, Sr. She attended Williamsburg County schools and was of the Protestant faith. Surviving, in addition to her mother of Andrews, is one brother, W. B. Avant, Jr. of Andrews.
BRIANNA MARTIN -- Brianna Nichole Martin, infant daughter of Shelton and Betsy Cox Martin, died Mon., Aug. 12, 2002, at a Florence hospital. Graveside service was held Fri., Aug. 16, 2002, at the Spring Pond Church Cemetery. Burial was directed by Andrews Chapel, McKenzie Funeral Home. Survivors, in addition to her parents of Andrews, are: one brother, Shelton Martin, II, of Andrews; her paternal grandmother, Patsy Martin of Andrews; her maternal grandparents, Tammy Vereen Cox of Kingstree; and Winston Randall Cox and his wife, Janice of Johnsonville; and her maternal great-grand grandparents, Betty Sue Warren of Britton's Neck and Rudy Van Cox of Johnsonville.
MICHELLE JACKSON -- Funeral services for Mrs. Michelle Cunningham Jackson, conducted by Donald Danner were held Sun., Aug. 18, 2002, at Evangelistic Temple Way of the Cross in Kingstree. Burial, directed by Redmond-Richardson Funeral Home, followed at Greenlawn Cemetery. Mrs. Jackson, 41, formerly of Kingstree, died Wed., Aug. 14, 2002, at Carolinas Hospital System-Florence. She was born Feb. 1, 1961, in Williamsburg County, a daughter of Louise C. Cunningham and Frank Washington, Sr. She attended the public schools of Williamsburg County and graduated from Kingstree Senior High School in 1979. She furthered her education at Florence-Darlington Technical College where she received an associate degree and earned a bachelor of arts degree from Limestone College in Gaffney. She was a member of Mount Moriah Holiness Church and served as directress of the adult choir, assistant president of the Youth for Christ and personal secretary to the pastor. She was employed by Wateree AIDS Task Force. She also once worked for DSS of Williamsburg and Florence Counties and for Limestone College. Survivors, in addition to her parents of Kingstree, are: her husband, Burnice "BJ" Jackson of the home; one brother, Leroy Ginn of Florence; and her maternal grandmother, Mrs. Elouise C. Jenkins of Kingstree; four step-children, Jaqusha L. Bynum of Darlington; Davonta L. Backus of Florence; Demeshion Jackson of Hartsville; and Lakeem Williams of Bennettsville; two half-sisters, Mrs. Felicia Palmer and Charlene Washington, both of Kingstree; two half-brothers, Gary Washington and Frank Washington, Jr., both of Kingstree; her mother-in-law, Mrs. Annie Simmons of Hartsville; father-in-law, Billy Shaw of Fayetteville, North Carolina; and her grandparents-in-law, Dea. Henry and Dorothy Jackson of Hartsville.
JIM FITTS -- Funeral services for Deacon James "Jim" Frank Fitts, conducted by the Rev. Willie Wilson, were held Fri., Aug. 17, 2002, at Mt. Zion United Methodist Church in Kingstree. Burial, directed by Redmond-Richardson Funeral Home, followed at Florence National Cemetery. Mr. Fitts, 76, died Tues., Aug. 13, 2002, at Williamsburg Regional Hospital in Kingstree. He was born March 10, 1926, in Allendale, a son of the late Mannie and Flora Fitts, Sr. He received his formal education in the public schools of Allendale County and graduated from Allendale Training School. He also graduated from South Carolina State College in Orangeburg. He served in the United States Navy during World War II. He was a member of Siloam Baptist Church and served on the Deacon Board. He retired from Clemson Extension after many years of dedicated service. Survivors are: his wife, Mrs. Esther Pearson Fitts of the home; three children, Derek Fitts of Columbia; Mrs. Arthene Hoover of Allendale; and Mrs. Cheryl Fitts-Brown of Columbia; two brothers, Arthur Fitts of Irmo; and Mannie Fitts, Jr., of Allendale; five sisters, Mrs. Eunice Olgetree, Mrs. Evelyn Lawton and Mrs. Catherine Mitchell, all of Allendale; Mrs. Ernestine Saxon of Philadelphia, Pennsylvania; and Mrs. Flora Mae Barnes of Augusta, Georgia; eight grandchildren; and nine great-grandchildren.
HERMAN RAINEY, SR. -- Herman Lindon Rainey, Sr., 64, husband of Mary Ann Bradham Rainey, died Tues., Aug. 13, 2002, at his home in Manning. Funeral services, conducted by the Rev. Mike Murdoch and the Rev. Allen McWhite, were held Fri., Aug. 16, 2002, at Grace Christian Fellowship Church. Burial, directed by Stephens Funeral Home, followed at Clarendon Memorial Gardens. Born Oct. 7, 1937, in Winder, Georgia, he was a son of the late Roy and Iva Belle Little Rainey. He was a landscaper, an Air Force veteran, a charter member of Emman-uel Baptist Church and attended Grace Christian Fellowship Church. Survivors, in addition to his wife of Manning, are: two sons, Herman Lindon "Lin" Rainey, Jr., and Paul "P.J." Ward, Jr., of Manning; three daughters, Donna Jackson of Greenwood; Ramona Burrows of Kingstree; and Paula Barwick of Manning; one brother, Clifford Rainey of Warner Robbins, Georgia; one sister, Mary Moulder of Hoschton, Georgia; and 11 grandchildren.
