Posted By: GenealogyBuff.com MARY THOMAS -- Funeral services for Mary Ann Dukes Thomas, conducted by the Rev. Malachi Gibson, were held Mon., Dec. 9, 2002, at Mt. Zion A.M.E. Church. Burial, directed by Dimery and Rogers Funeral Home, followed at Hunter Cemetery. Mrs. Thomas, 104, died Tues., Dec. 3, 2002, at Lake Moultrie Nursing Home in St. Stephen. She was born Oct. 15, 1898, in Greeleyville, a daughter of the late Louis Duke. She was educated in the public schools of Williamsburg County. She was a member of Mt. Zion A.M.E. Church. She was Mother of the Church, class leader and church missionary. She also was a member of Tribe of Noah, Y.M.C.A. and Order of Eastern Star. Survivors are: four sons, William Thomas, Jr. and Roosevelt Thomas, both of Troy, New York; Tommy Thomas and John Thomas, both of Greeleyville; and grandchildren.
LAVERNE JOHNSON -- Funeral services for Laverne Johnson, conducted by the Rev. Truman Morant, were held on Thurs., Dec. 5, 2002, at Old Mt. Olive Missionary Baptist Church in Kingstree. Burial, directed by Henryhand Funeral Home, followed at Greenlawn Cemetery in Kingstree. Mr. Johnson died Thurs., Nov. 28, 2002, from injuries sustained in an automobile accident. He was born Feb. 28, 1960, in Kingstree. He attended St. Mark Elementary and High School and furthered his education at Williamsburg Technical College where he received his certification in automotive mechanic. He was a member of the Original Mt. Olive Missionary Baptist Church. He was employed as a mass mechanic at McCutcheon¹s Auto Repairs in Kingstree. Survivors, in addition to his parent of Kingstree, are: three sons, Lavorious Shaw, Levern Shaw and Charlie Shaw of Kingstree; one brother, four sisters, Sullie Gibson, Bessie Battle, Queen Richardson of Kingstree; and Doretha Godfrey of Florence.
MICHAEL HILL -- Michael Douglas Hill, 38, died Fri., Dec. 6, 2002, at a Florence hospital. Funeral services were held Sunday, December 8, 2002, at Cades Baptist Church. Burial, directed by Brockington Funeral Home, followed at Cedar Creek Cemetery in Nichols, South Carolina. Mr. Hill was born in Mullins, a son of Harvey Eldon and Minnette Harrelson Hill. He was a graduate of Salem Academy and attended Williamsburg Technical College and was a welder and a farmer. He was a member of Cades Baptist Church. Survivors, in addition to his parents of Lake View, are: his wife, Sharon Ern Hill of Cades; one son, Benjamin Hill of Cades; two step-sons, Joshua Hill and Dustin Hill, both of Cades; two brothers, Jeffery Hill of Murrells Inlet; and Daniel Hill of Lake City; and two sisters, Cynthia Fry of Herndon, Virginia; and Barbara Huggins of Fork.
ALFRED SMITH -- Funeral services for Alfred Vernell Smith, conducted by the Rev. Stanley W. Jones, were held Tues., December 10, 2002, at Friendship Presbyterian Church (USA) in New Zion. Burial, directed by Dimery and Rogers Funeral Home, followed at the church cemetery. Mr. Smith, 59, died Fri., Dec. 6, 2002, at his residence in New Zion. He was born May 22, 1943, a son of the late Wade Hampton Smith and Isolene Eugenia McClary Smith. He received his former educational training from the Lodabar Grammar School and was a 1961 graduate of Walker-Gamble High School. He continued his education at the Temple School of Business of Washington, DC. He was formerly employed as a data processor at Hann Shoe Co. in Washington, DC and Merita Bakery in Florence and retired from Model Dye in Sumter. He was a member of Friendship Presbyterian Church (USA). Survivors are: one son, Aldrie Smith of Lynchburg; three daughters, Mrs. Maria Smith of Washington, DC; Mrs. Tracie Smith of Beltville, Maryland; and Mrs. Ashley Wright of Jacksonville, North Carolina; one brother, Wade Smith, Jr. of New Zion; four sisters, Mrs. Gloria Frierson of Florence; Mrs. Charlena Timmons of Quinby; Mrs. Slyvia Ivey and Mrs. Marion Smith, both of New Zion; and three grandchildren.
FRED RODGERS, JR. -- Fred LeGrand Rodgers, Jr., 80, died Tues., Dec. 2, 2002, in a Kingstree hospital. Funeral services were held Thurs., Dec. 5, 2002, at Williams-burg Funeral Home Chapel. Burial, directed by Williamsburg Funeral Home, followed at McClary Cemetery. Mr. Rodgers was born in Williamsburg County, a son of the late Cora Hanna Rodgers and Fred L. Rodgers, Sr. He was a graduate of Kingstree High School and was an Army veteran of World War II. He was a farmer, merchant and a retired fireman. He was a Presbyterian. Survivors are: his wife, Mrs. Mary Evans Rodgers of Kingstree; two sons, Davis LeGrand Rodgers, Sr. and Emory Dale Rodgers, both of Kingstree; one daughter, Julie Burnett of York; eight grandchildren; and seven great-grandchildren. Memorials may be made to McClary Cemetery.
WILLIAM RODGERS -- William Dallas (Bill) Rodgers, 45, died Wed., Dec. 4, 2002, at his residence. Funeral services were held Fri., Dec. 6, 2002, at Williamsburg Funeral Home Chapel. Burial, directed by Williamsburg Funeral Home, followed at Kingstree Memorial Gardens. Mr. Rodgers was born in Kingstree, a son of Mable Walters Rodgers and the late Willie M. Rodgers. He was a graduate of Kingstree Senior High School and a farmer. Mr. Rodgers was a member of the Brown's Landing Hunting Club, Ducks Unlimited, the National Rifle Association and Kingstree United Methodist Church. Survivors, in addition to his mother of Kingstree, are: his wife, Kathy Kennedy Rodgers of Kingstree; and one sister, Libby R. Ganes of Kingstree. Memorials may be made to the South Carolina Waterfowl Association.
HARRIETTE BRENNECKE -- Funeral services for Harriette Hardee Brennecke, 73, were held at Forest Lake Presbyterian Church. Burial, directed by Dunbar Funeral Home, followed at Greenlawn Memorial Park. Mrs. Brennecke died Sat., Dec. 7, 2002. Born in Kingstree, she was the daughter of the late Eric Sloan and Mildred Epps Hardee. She graduated from Winyah High School and attended Limestone College. She retired from Thomas and Howard Co. Mrs. Brennecke was a charter member of Forest Lake Presbyterian Church. Survivors are: her husband, Frank Brennecke, Jr.; one daughter, Julia Louise Brennecke of Colum-bia; one son, Frank Brennecke, III of Columbia; and five grandchildren. Memorials may be made to the Juvenile Diabetes Foundation, 3608 Landmark Drive, Suite C, Columbia, South Carolina 29204 or to Forest Lake Presbyterian Church, 6500 N. Trenholm Road, Columbia, South Carolina 29206.
JOSEPH McFADDEN -- Funeral services for Joseph McFadden, conducted by Elder Linwood Cooper, were held Wed., Dec. 11, 2002, at St. Mark Believers Holiness Church in Lake City. Mr. McFadden, a truck driver, 61, died Wednesday, Dec. 4, 2002, at Irvington General Hospital in Irvington, New Jersey. He was born Sept. 13, 1941, in Florence County, a son of the late Wardell and Henrietta Rush McFadden. Survivors are: his wife, Mrs. Wilhelmenia McFadden of Scranton; one daughter, Mrs. Quenisha Wilson of Scranton; two sisters, Mrs. Lucille Butler of Newark, New Jersey; and Mrs. Cynthia Mallette of Lake City; three brothers, Thomas McFadden and Frank David McFadden, both of Pittsburg, Pennsylvania; and Elijah McFadden of Lake City; and seven grandchildren.
GILBERT COMBER -- Funeral services for Gilbert James Lee Comber, conducted by Elder Harley Comber, were held Sat., Nov. 23, 2002, at Hickory Grove Baptist Church in Fair Bluff, North Carolina. Burial, directed by McClary Funeral Home, followed at Hickory Grove Baptist Church Cemetery. Mr. Comber died Nov. 13, 2002, in Worcester, Massachusetts. He was born April 9, 1958, in Mullins, the son of the late Clarence and Margie Comber. He attended the public schools of Marion County and was a member of Hickory Grove Baptist Church. Survivors are: one brother, Elder Harley Comber of Kingstree; and one sister, Mrs. Lare Ashford of Washington, DC.
AMIE JOHNSON -- Funeral services for Mrs. Amie Smith Johnson, conducted by the Rev. Jonathan Brown, were held Wed., Dec. 11, 2002, at Elijah United Methodist Church in Kingstree. Burial, directed by Dimery and Rogers Funeral Home, followed at the churchyard cemetery. Mrs. Johnson, 87, died Sat., Dec. 7, 2002, at McLeod Regional Hospital in Florence. She was the daughter of the late Mitchell Smith and Maggie Bright Smith. She was educated in the public schools of Williamsburg County. She was a member of Elijah United Methodist Church where she sang in the senior and gospel choirs. She was also a member of Evening Star Chapter Order of Eastern Star #246. Survivors are: one son, Joe Louis Johnson of Chesapeake, Virginia; seven daughters, Mrs. Verlene Johnson of Miami, Florida; Unetha Johnson Greene of Brooklyn, New York; Mary Johnson Stillman of Florence; Mrs. Maggie Johnson Henderson; Marthella Johnson, Perthella Johnson McCrea and Mrs. Sandra Greene, all of Kingstree; and 24 grandchildren.
