Posted By: GenealogyBuff.com JOSEPHINE McALLISTER -- Funeral services for Mrs. Josephine Harvin McAllister, conducted by Elder Dr. Linwood Cooper, were held Sun., April 13, 2003, at St. Mark Believers Holiness Church in Lake City. Burial, directed Samuels and Richardson Funeral Home, followed at Old McFadden Cemetery in Turbeville. Mrs. McAllister, 71, died Wed., April 9, 2003, at Fieldstone Lodge Nursing Facility in Bronx, New York. She was born June 13, 1932, in Turbeville, a daughter of the late Samuel Harvin, Sr. and Elizabeth Prince Harvin and step-daughter of the late Louise Harvin. She was married to the late Floyd McAllister, Sr. Survivors are: two daughters, Joan Burgess of Lake City; and Marie Alderman of Manhattan, New York; one son, Floyd McAllister, Jr. of Nesmith; four sisters, Roberta Gibbs and Betty Edwards, both of Bronx, New York; Geneva Harvin of Turbeville; and Wilhelmina Pearson of Philadelphia, Pennsyl-vania; three brothers, Samuels Harvin, Jr., James Harvin and Raleigh Harvin, all of Bronx, New York; eight grandchildren; and three great-grandchildren.
JULIA STRONG -- Funeral services for Mrs. Julia Mae Brown Strong, conducted by the Rev. Oliver Davis, were held Thurs., April 19, 2003, at Oak Grove A. M. E. Church in Lake City. Burial, directed by Redmond-Richardson Funeral Home, followed at Beaverdale Cemetery in Hamden, Connecticut. Mrs. Strong, 65, widow of Aaron Strong, died Wed. April 16, 2003, At Carolinas Hospital System-Florence. She was born Aug. 31, 1937, in Greeleyville, a daughter of the late Rev. Joe Fleming and Lila Bradley Strong. She was educated and graduated from the public schools of Williamsburg County. After continuing her education, she became a nursing assistant. She joined Star Light Band of Charleston in 1953. She later moved to New Haven, Connec-ticut and joined St. Matthew Freewill Baptist Church and joined Bible Gospel Center. After relocating to Turbeville, she joined Oak Grove A. M. E. Church. She worked for thirty years at St. Regis Medical Center and retired in 1997. Survivors include: two sons, Erick Strong of Ellenwood, Georgia and George Strong of New Haven, Connecticut; seven sisters, Mary Driffin of New Haven Connecticut; Sally Brown, the Rev. Katie Hall, Willa Brown, Malqueen Taylor and Virginia Brown, all of Baltimore Maryland; and Gladys Brown of Glendale, Maryland; and three granddaughters.
CATHY SMERCHEK Cathy Marie Thomas Smerchek, 44, died Mon., April 14, 2003, at her home in Tennessee. Memorial services were held Thurs., April 17, 2003, at Manes Funeral Home in Newport, Tennessee. Born July 3, 1958, in Rock Hill, she was a daughter of Sylvia and Jack Roberts. She was a member of the First Baptist Church of Newport. Survivors, in addition to her parents of Salters are: one brother, Brad Roberts of Salters; and three sisters, Faye Shealy and Julie Baker of Lane; and Phyllis Wilson of Salters. Memorials may be made to the First Baptist Church of Newport, 261 East Broadway, Newport, Tennessee 37821.
KENNETH LEWIS -- Funeral services for Kenneth Odell Lewis, affectionately known as "Smiley" or "Kenny," were held Sat., April 12, 2003, at Jerusalem A.M.E. Church in Hemingway. Burial, directed by Dimery and Rogers Funeral Home, followed at Bethlehem A.M.E. Cemetery. Mr. Lewis, 50, died Mon., April 7, 2003, in Newark, New Jersey. He was born in Williamsburg County, a son of Ray Lewis and Carrie Lewis. He was a 1970 graduate of Chavis High School. Survivors, in addition to his parents of Hemingway, are: two daughters, Neicy Bonds and La-keiia Perry, both of Newark, New Jersey; one brother, Arnold A. "Skip" Lewis of Newark, New Jersey; one sister, Jeffery Portee of Columbia; and two granddaughters.
ROSENE SHAW -- Funeral services for Mrs. Rosene Woodard Shaw, conducted by the Rev. Nathaniel Evans, Jr., were held Sat., April 12, 2003, at Faith United Methodist Church in Kingstree. Burial, directed by Dimery and Rogers Funeral Home, followed at Faith Cemetery. Mrs. Shaw, 83, died Sat., April 5, 2003, in Kingstree. She was born Aug. 8, 1918, in Williamsburg County, a daughter of the late Nicholas Woodard and Anna Woodard. She was educated in the public schools of Williamsburg County. She was a member of Faith United Methodist Church in Kingstree. Survivors are: one son, David Shaw; two daughters, Dianne Shaw and Francis Shaw of Washington, DC; two sisters, Mrs. Alice Madison of Kingstree; and Mrs. Dora Madison of Ft. Lauderdale, Florida; six grandchildren; and four great-grandchildren.
FRANCENA WOODS -- Funeral services for Mrs. Francena Jackson Woods, conducted by the Rev. C.W. Green, were held Mon., April 21, 2003, at Oak Grove Missionary Baptist Church. Burial, directed by Dimery and Rogers Funeral Home, followed at Crossroads Cemetery. Mrs. Woods, 87, died Tues., April 15, 2003, at Williamsburg Regional Hospital in Kingstree. She was born July 1, 1915, in Williamsburg County, a daughter of the late Adam Jackson and Adline Frierson Jackson. She attended the public schools of Williamsburg County. She was a member of Oak Grove Missionary Baptist Church, where she served as Deaconess, Usher, Sunday school teacher and on the Missionary Board. Survivors are: one adopted son, Lawrence Chandler of Salters; two adopted daughters, Mrs. Barbara Chandler and Mrs. Angela Chandler, both of Salters; and four sisters, Mrs. Alberta McFadden of Greeleyville; Mrs. Adline Jackson of Salters; Mrs. Rachel Kirkland and Mrs. Mary Miller, both of New Haven, Connecticut.
DA'NATA DARBY -- Funeral services for Mrs. Da'Nata Purvis Darby, conducted by the Rev. Samuel B. Cooper, were held Wed., April 23, 2003, at Jerusalem United Methodist Church. Burial, directed by Dimery and Rogers Funeral Home, followed at the churchyard cemetery. Mrs. Darby, 37, died Sat., April 19, 2003, at Roper Hospital in Charleston. She was born Jan. 24, 1966, a daughter of Mrs. Dottie Purvis Evans and the Rev. McNeil Evans, Jr. and her biological father Joe Lewis Harrison. She attended and graduated from Williamsburg-Blakely High School. She attended South Carolina State University, Horry-Georgetown Technical College and Williamsburg Technical College. She was formerly employed as a clinical secretary at Georgetown Memorial Hospital for seven years. She was a member of Jerusalem United Methodist Church, where she sang on the adult choir. Survivors, in addition to her parents, are: two sons, Vladmir Alexander Purvis and Toddelle F. Darby, Jr., both of the home; four sisters, Mrs. Na'Dia P. Bufkin (twin) of Georgetown; Mrs. Jawana Williams of Andrews; Mrs. TaKashia Evans of Greenwood; and Mrs. Savetta Driffin of Kingstree; and two brothers, George O. McClary, III of Atlanta, Georgia; and Antonio Evans of Kingstree.
HOWELL OWENS -- Howell Ted Owens, 53, of the Rhem Community, died Sun., April 20, 2003, at his residence. Graveside service, conducted by the Rev. Billy Rufus, was held Wed., April 23, 2003, at the Union Presbyterian Church Cemetery, near Salters, directed by Andrews Chapel of McKenzie Funeral Home. Mr. Owens was born Feb. 4, 1950, in Horry County, a son of Thomas Owens and Bernice Kirby Owens. He was a retired exterminator and serviced in the US Navy as a radio operator. He was a Presbyterian. Survivors, in addition to his mother, are: two sons, Howell Ted Owens, Jr. of Lane and Henry Montgomery Owens of Columbia; and three sisters, Patsy O. Avant of Pawley's Island; Nancy O. Alger of Charleston; and Betty Jane Owens of Myrtle Beach.
HENRIETTA GORDON -- Henrietta Pollins Gordon, 76, of Summerville, died Mon., April 21, 2003, in Charleston. Funeral services were held Fri., April 25, 2003, at Oak Grove Baptist Church. Burial, directed by Gadsden Funeral Home, followed at Sunset Memorial Gardens. Mrs. Gordon was the daughter of the daughter of the late Mrs. Rosa Donaldson Pollins and Elijah L. Pollins. Survivors are: two daughters, Shirley Bines of Kingstree; and Kym D. Moore of Charlotte, North Carolina; two sons, James Kevyn Gordon of Vancouver, Washington; and Sheldyn A. Gordon of Charleston; two sisters, Susanna P. Glaze of Burton, South Carolina; and Inez P. Jenkins of Trenton, New Jersey; and four grandchildren.
LUTHER CHATMAN -- Funeral services for Luther "Lucious" Chatman, conducted by the Rev. Albert J. Rose, Jr., were held Sun., April 27, 2003, at St. James Missionary Baptist Church in Greeleyville. Burial, directed by Redmond-Richardson Funeral Home, followed at the churchyard cemetery. Mr. Chatman, 63, died Tues., April 22, 2003, at Howard University Hospital in Washington, DC. He was born Sept. 6, 1939, in Williamsburg County, a son of the late Oscar Chatman, Sr. and Alma Montgomery Chatman. He attended and graduated from the public schools of the county. He was a member St. James Baptist Church, where he served on the church choir and on the missionary board. He was employed by Joy Construction Company as a truck driver. Survivors are: one son, Derrick Chatman of Indianhead, Maryland; five brothers, James Chatman, Oscar Chatman and Emanuel Chatman, all of Washington, DC; Clyde Chatman and Alex Chatman, both of Greeleyville; six sisters, Mrs. Julia Gist of Raleigh, North Carolina; Mrs. Lois Hill of Jacksonville, Florida; Mrs. Martha King of Manning; Mrs. Okla Kenely of Sumter; Mrs. Anna Woods and Mrs. Evelyn Richardson, both of Greeleyille; and five grandchildren.
