Posted By: GenealogyBuff.com MCFADDEN -- John Fulmore McFadden, 86, died Friday, December 19, 1997, in a Kingstree hospital. Funeral services were held Monday, December 22, 1997, in the Williamsburg Funeral Home Chapel. Burial followed in Kingstree Memorial Gardens directed by Williamsburg Funeral Home. Mr. McFadden was born in Williamsburg County, a son of the late John Fulmore and Corinne Scott McFadden. He attended Washington and Lee University and was a retired vice-president of Avco Financial Corporation. He served as captain in the Army Air Corps during World War II and was a member of Kingstree United Methodist Church. Surviving is his wife, Mrs. Stephanie Stojeba McFadden of Kingstree.
GRANTHAM -- Mrs. Esther Moneta Smith Grantham, 86, widow of Thomas A. Grantham, died Thursday, December 18, 1997. Funeral services were held Saturday, December 20, 1997, in the Williamsburg Funeral Home Chapel. Burial followed in Kingstree Memorial Gardens directed by Williamsburg Funeral Home. Mrs. Grantham was born in Paragould, AR, a daughter of the late Claude E. Smith and Flora Story Smith Brown. She was retired from Warsaw Manufacturing Co. Mrs. Grantham was a member of Kingstree First Baptist Church, the TEL Sunday School Class and the Eugene Chapter of the Order of the Eastern Star. Survivors are: three daughters, Mrs. Leona Godwin of Kingstree; Mrs. Claudia Douglas of Columbia; and Mrs. Aneta Hagen of Pensacola, FL; and one brother, Glen Adkins of St. Louis, Mo.
GEE -- Virginia Baker Gee, widow of Dalton Gee, died December 26, 1997, in Carolinas Hospital in Florence. The funeral was conducted by Williamsburg Funeral Home. She was buried in the Williamsburg Cemetery in Kingstree. She was born May 18, 1917, in the Baker family home in Williamsburg County to Janie Tisdale Baker and James Edgar Baker. Her school years began in a one room school house near her home. She continued her education in the Kingstree schools and received an associate degree in art from the University of South Carolina. She is survived by her five children: one son, Bogan Dalton Gee (Beau) of Pawleys Island; daughters, Mrs. Edward Eatmon (Alice) of Kingstree; Lois Virginia Gee (Ginny) of Surfside; Mrs. Bill Wilkie (Winnie) of Summerville and Mrs. Jim Koenig (Anne) of Gig Harbor, Washington. Grandchildren are: Bonnie Wilkie, West Covina, California; Bill Wilkie, Jr., Summerville; Jim Koenig, Jr., Mt. Pleasant, Johnny Wilkie, Augusta; Alicia Eatmon, Columbia; Edward Wilkie, Summerville; Kelley Eatmon, Columbia; and Na-than and Michael Gee of Pawleys Island. Memorials may be made to the Organ Fund of the Kingstree United Methodist Church, P.O. Box 457, Kingstree, South Carolina.
MONTGOMERY -- Funeral services for Rev. Robert "Bobby" Gene McKnight Montgomery were held Jan. 2, 1998, at Oak Grove Missionary Baptist Church in Salters, conducted by Rev. C.W. Green. Burial followed at Porter-Ferrell Cemetery in Salters. Rev. Montgomery, 60, died Saturday, December 27, 1997, at Metropolitan Hospital in Manhattan, New York. He was born August 5, 1937, in Kingstree, a son of Leon Montgomery, Sr. and Emma McKnight. He was a member of Oak Grove Baptist Church. He was an associate pastor at Glendale Baptist Church in Manhattan, New York. Survivors, in addition to his parents, are: his wife, Mrs. Mary L. McKnight of the home; one son, Robert Gene McKnight of the home; four daughters, Linda G. McKnight and Jacqueline O. McKnight, both of the home; Mrs. Debra Dickerson of Burlington, N.J.; and Mrs. Robin D. McKnight-Nelson of Queens, N.Y.; three brothers, Freddie Bradley of Brooklyn, N.Y.; Leon Montgomery, Jr. of Long Island, N.Y.; and Wayne Montgomery of Columbia; and four sisters, Mrs. Mary Lee Walton of Bronx, N.Y.; Mrs. Jessica Robinson of Long Island, N.Y.; Alberta Higgins of Salters; and Mrs. Odell Bradley of Brooklyn, N.Y.
EPPS -- Charlton Wilmont "C.W." Epps, Jr., 69, formerly of Kingstree, died Friday, Jan. 2, 1997, in a Charleston hospital. Funeral services were held Monday, January 5, 1998, in Kingstree Memorial Gardens directed by Williamsburg Funeral Home. Mr. Epps was born in Williamsburg County, a son of the late C.W. Epps, Sr. and Bessie Bodiford Epps. He served in the Merchant Marines during World War II and was a member of the International Brotherhood of Electrical Workers, Local 776 in Charleston. Mr. Epps was a Presbyterian and a member of Fort Pitt Masonic Lodge #635 in Oakmont, PA. Survivors are: his wife, Mrs. Margaret Tanner Epps of Bonneau; three daughters, Peggy Boatwright, Frances Tisdale and Donna Love, all of Kingstree; and one son, Charles L. Epps of Bonneau.
ROBINSON -- George Lavon (Spec) Robinson, 72, died Thursday, January 1, 1998, at his residence. Funeral services were held Saturday, January 3, 1998, in the Williamsburg Funeral Home Chapel. Burial followed in Midway Presbyterian Church Cemetery. Mr. Robinson was born in Clarendon County, a son of the late Jake J. and Annie Jane Robinson. He was a retired employee of Drexel-Heritage Furniture Co. in Kingstree and a member of Horse Branch Free Will Baptist Church. Mr. Robinson was a member of the Sandy Bay Hunting Club and a Mason. Survivors are: his wife, Mrs. Grace Lane Robinson of Kingstree; three sons, Steve E. Harrington of Kingstree; Charles L. Robinson of Columbia; and R. Kevin Robinson of Kingstree; three daughters, Sandra J. Harrington of Columbia; Linda H. Tobias of Sumter; and Brenda H. Woods of Kingstree; and one brother, McNeil Robinson of Turbeville.
CARRAWAY -- Duval Carraway, 84, died Wednesday, Dec. 31, 1997. Funeral services were held Saturday, January 3, 1998, in the Williamsburg Funeral Home Chapel. Burial followed at Union Presbyterian Church Cemetery directed by Williamsburg Funeral Home. Mr. Carraway was born in Mulberry, FL, a son of the late Samuel Ashe and Lula Whitfield Carraway. He was a retired employee of the S.C. Employment Securities Commission and a member of Salters Methodist Church. Survivors are: one son, Marion D. Carraway of Prosperity; and one daughter, Ann C. McCall of Irvine, California.
MCELVEEN -- Mrs. Anease B. McElveen, 70, wife of L. Wendell McElveen, died Saturday, January 3, 1998, in a Florence hospital. Funeral services were held Monday, January 5, 1998, in the Hebron United Methodist Church. Burial followed in the church cemetery directed by Brockington Funeral Home. Mrs. McElveen was born in Clarendon County, a daughter of the late Henry L. Barrineau and Ida Mims Barrineau. She was a graduate of the McLeod School of Nursing and was a homemaker. She was a member of Hebron United Methodist Church. Survivors are: her husband, L. Wendell McElveen of Cades; two sons, Roger McElveen and Charles McElveen, both of Cades; two daughters, Barbara Boatwright of Walhalla; and Julie Newell of Myrtle Beach; two sisters, Emmaline Calcutt of Cades; and Thelma B. Gibbs of Olanta; and one brother, H. L. Barrineau of Lake City.
MCCREA -- Funeral services for Mrs. Henrietta Fulton McCrea were held January 3, 1998, at Mt. Zion United Methodist Church in Kingstree, conducted by Rev. Willie Wilson. Burial followed at Greenlawn Cemetery directed by Dimery and Rogers Funeral. Mrs. McCrea, 97, died Tuesday, December 30, 1997, at Carolinas Hospital System-Florence. She was born May 1, 1900, in Kingstree, a daughter of the late Benjamin Fulton and Mariah McAlister Fulton. She was employed as a farmer. She was a member of Mt. Zion United Methodist Church, the United Methodist Women and Care Group No. Ten. Survivors are: five sons, George McCrea, Ben E. McCrea and Hazle McCrea, all of Kingstree; Jacob McCrea of Hollywood, FL; and Thomas McCrea of New York; two daughters, Mrs. Mammie Barr Adamson of Kingstree; and Mrs. Loretta Brunson of Boston, Ma.; and one brother, Julius Fulton of Kingstree.
ISRAEL -- Funeral services for Mrs. Ethel Smith Israel were held Saturday, January 3, 1998, at Mt. Zion Baptist Church in Greeleyville, conducted by Rev. Bonus Miller. Burial followed at Mt. Zion Baptist Church Cemetery in Greeleyville directed by Dimery and Rogers Funeral Home. Mrs. Israel, 80, died Tuesday, December 30, 1997, at Clarendon Memorial Hospital in Manning. She was born February 21, 1917, in Williamsburg County, a daughter of the late Jessie Smith and Lillie Singletary Smith. She was a retired educator. She earned a bachelor of arts in English education from Morris College and a master of arts of education from South Carolina State College. She did further studies at the University of South Dakota, the University of North Dakota and the University of South Carolina. She taught in the public schools of Berkley, Beaufort and Williamsburg Counties. She was a former principal and a former basketball coach in Berkley County. She was a member of the Retired Teachers Association. She was a member of Mt. Zion Baptist Church and served as the church clerk and the Sunday School Clerk. She was clerk of the Jerusalem Missionary Baptist Association, Clerk of the Womenıs Convention Jerusalem Missionary Baptist Association from 1947 to 1981 and Clerk Emeritus of the Jerusalem Missionary Baptist Association from 1983 to 1986 and Clerk Emeritus of the the Jerusalem Missionary Baptist Association since 1996. She was a member and past worthy matron of Liberty Works Order of the Easter Star #171. She was District Deputy, Order of the Eastern Star District Six. She was also a member of Abagail Society Lodge. Survivors are: one son, Otis Murray of Greeleyville; one daughter, Mrs. Viola Loretta Cade of Philadelphia, Pa.; and two sisters, Mrs. Edith McFadden of Charleston; and Mrs. Thelma Matthew of Lane.
