Posted By: GenealogyBuff.com POLLY JOHNSON -- Pauline "Polly" Epps Johnson died Wed., Aug. 20, 2003, at the home of her daughter in Rock Hill. Graveside services, directed by Elmore-Hill-McCreight Funeral Home, were held Fri., Aug. 22, 2003, at Epps Cemetery near Kingstree. Mrs. Johnson was the daughter of the late George "Billy" L. Epps and Gladys Epps. She was twice married, first to the late John Z. Johnson and later to the late David F. Johnson. Formerly of Sumter, Mrs. Johnson moved to Rock Hill in October of 1999, where she resided with her daughter. Survivors are: one daughter, Debra Karen Johnson; honorary step-daughter and friend, Kelley Gunnells OšHara; one sister, Zelene E. Kempson; one brother, Dan Epps; and one step-son, Richard C. Johnson. The family requests in lieu of flowers that memorials be made to the Michael J. Fox Foundation for Parkinsonšs Research.
ELEASE FORD -- Funeral services for Mrs. Elease Izzard Ford, conducted by the Rev. Willie Bryant, were held Sun., Aug. 24, 2003, at Union Baptist Church. Burial, directed by Dimery and Rogers Funeral Home, followed at Rocky Ford Cemetery. Mrs. Ford, 85, died Wed., Aug. 20, 2003, in Sumter. She was born April 6, 1918, a daughter of the late Charlie Izzard and Mattie Footman Izzard. She graduated from the public schools of Williamsburg County, Morris College in Sumter and did advanced studies at South Carolina State University and the University of South Carolina. She taught in the public school system of South Carolina for 40 years. She taught in Lake City, Cedar Swamp School, Union School and Williamsburg Training School. She was also a basketball coach for C.E. Murray for 27 years. Mrs. Ford was a member of Union Baptist Church, where she served as church secretary, church missionary, Sunday school teacher and sang in the senior choir. She was also a member of Alpha Pi Chi Sorority for 40 years, Abigail Benevolent Society No. 54 of Greeleyville and Retired Teachers Association. Survivors are: three daughters, Mrs. Constance Ford Brunson of Columbia; Mrs. Betty Ford of Salters; and Mrs. Ernestine Coard Harris of Standstone, Virginia; four grandchildren; and one great-grandchild.
BILL McKENZIE, SR. -- Wardell DeWitt "Bill" McKenzie, Sr., 75, died Fri., Aug. 22, 2003, at his residence. Funeral services were held Sun., Aug. 24, 2003, at the Sandy Bay Pentecostal Holiness Church. Burial, directed by Williamsburg Funeral Home, followed at Smith Cemetery. Mr. McKenzie was born in Williamsburg County, a son of the late Delos Dexter and Lillie Morris McKenzie. He was the retired owner of Bill's Radiator Shop and Black River Sand and Gravel Co. Mr. McKenzie attended Sandy Bay Pentecostal Holiness Church. Survivors are: his wife, Mrs. Mary Powell McKenzie of Kings-tree; two sons, Richard McKenzie of Kingstree and Ellis McKenzie of San Diego, California; four daughters, Cheryl McClam, Darlene Ray and Carol McKenzie, all of Kingstree; and Billie Lee Shewmake of Montgomery, Alabama; one sister, Faye M. McKissick of Irmo; eight grandchildren; and six great-grandchildren. Memorials may be made to Sandy Bay Pentecostal Holiness Church, 175 Delos Road, Kingstree, SC 29556.
MARY LEWIS -- Funeral services for Mary Helen Lewis, conducted by the Rev. Franklin Scott, were held Sat., Aug. 23, 2003, at Nazareth A.M.E. Church in Johnsonville. Burial, directed by Dimery and Rogers Funeral Home, followed at Bethlehem A.M.E. Church Cemetery. Ms. Lewis, 47, died Tues., Aug. 19, 2003, in Florence. She was born July 19, 1956, a daughter of Mrs. Dorothy Mae Gibson Lewis and the late Wilson Lewis, Sr. She was educated in the public schools of Williamsburg County and graduated from Allen University. She was formerly employed with Hugo Logging Company. Ms. Lewis was a member of Bethlehem A.M.E. Church, where she served as church usher, church trustee, church missionary, Sunday school teacher, vacation bible school teacher and on the Pastor Aide Committee. Survivors, in addition to her mother, are: six brothers, Willie James Lewis of Georgetown; Si Jr. Lewis, of Hemingway; Donald Wilson Lewis of Yonkers City, New York; Cephus Lewis of Heming-way; Louie Lewis of Kingstree; and Solomon Lewis, II, of Hemingway; and two sisters, Mrs. Betty Jean Menton of Georgetown; and the Rev. Virginia Wilson Lewis of New York.
ELOISE WILLIAMS -- Funeral services for Mrs. Eloise Whack Williams, conducted by the Rev. Richard Addison, were held Wed., Feb. 26, 2003, at Trinity Missionary Baptist Church. Burial, conducted by Redmond-Richardson Funeral Home, followed in Keels Cemetery. Mrs. Williams, 92, widow of Carol Williams, died Saturday, February 22, 2003, at Clarendon Memorial Hospital in Manning. She was born on January 6, 1911, in Williamsburg County, a daughter of Tom Whack and Mary Conyers Whack. She received her formal education in the public schools of Williamsburg County, graduating from the Williamsburg Training School. Mrs. Williams was a member of Trinity Missionary Baptist Church, where she served in several capacities. She was also a member of the Mt. Hope Chapter #286, order of the Eastern Star. She retired as an employee of the Head Start program in Williamsburg County. Survivors include: one daughter, Mrs. Mamie Jenkins of Highland, California; one son, Thomas Williams of Greeleyville; two nephews whom she reared as sons, Joseph Williams of Denmark and Otis Williams of Hill Crest Heights, Maryland; seven grandchildren; and four great-grandchildren.
QUEEN FULTON -- Funeral services for Mrs. Queen Graham Fulton, conducted by the Rev. Franklin Fulmore, were held Mon. March 5, at St. Paul A.M.E. Church. Burial, directed by Samuels and Richardson Funeral Home, followed in State Cemetery. Mrs. Fulton, 84, widow of Hayward Fulton, died Tuesday, Feb. 25, 2003, at Carolinas Hospital System-Florence. She was born on May 28, 1918, in Williamsburg County, a daughter of Jim and Lizzie Harrison Graham. She received her formal education in the public schools of Williamsburg County. She was a member of St. Paul A.M.E. Church. Survivors include; three daughters, Rosa Lee Gamble of Florence; Mary Lee Stokes of Rochester, New York and Christine F. Askins of Scranton; six sons, Joe D. Fulton of Cades; John P. Fulton, Lavern Fulton and Eric A. Fulton, all of Lake City; Gillie Fulton of Allendale; and David Harrison of Clinton; grandchildren and great-grandchildren.
THOMAS DORSEY Graveside services for Thomas J. Dorsey, conducted by the Rev. Daisy Fulton, and directed by Dimery and Rogers Funeral Home, were held Wednesday, Feb. 26, 2003, in Dr. James Cemetery in the White Oak community. Mr. Dorsey, died Thurs., Feb. 20, 2003, at Fayette Community Hospital in Fayetteville, Georgia. He was born May 26, 1940, in Kingstree, a son of the late Issac Dorsey and Elizabeth McCrea Dorsey. He attended Coopers Academy, Tomlinson High School and graduated from Bushwick High School in Brooklyn, New York. He attended Baruch College in New York City. Mr. Dorsey joined Antioch Baptist Church in Cedar Swamp, then later joined Holy Covenant Baptist Church in Brooklyn, New York. After relocating to Fayetteville, Georgia, he joined the Olivet Baptist church of Christ. Survivors include: his wife, Mrs. Erma Dorsey of Fairburn, Georgia; one son, Thomas R. Dorsey of Fairburn, Georgia; one daughter, Mrs. Cynthia Dorsey Matthews of Atlanta, Georgia; three sisters, Mrs. Alma Williams and Mrs. Rose Lee Gardner, both of Brooklyn New York; and Mrs. Elouise of Philadelphia, Pennsylvania; three brother, Charlie Dorsey of Kingstree; Ben Dorsey and Eddie Dorsey, both of Brooklyn, New York; and two grandchildren.
ALTON STAGGERS, JR. -- Funeral services for Deacon Alton Staggers, Jr., conducted by the Rev. J. O. Bennett, were held Sat., March 1, 2003, at Goodwill Freewill Baptist Church in Cades. Burial, directed by Dimery and Rogers Funeral Home, followed at the church yard cemetery. Deacon Staggers, 69, died Mon., Feb. 22, 2003, at Kingstree Nursing Facility in Kingstree. He was born Feb. 12, 1934, in Williamsburg County, a son of the late Alton Staggers, Sr., and Catherine Pres-sley Staggers. He was educated in the public schools of Williamsburg County. He was a self employed contractor in Florida and also worked a number of years for the Department of Social Services in Williamsburg County. He was a member of Goodwill Freewill Baptist Church and sang in the choir. Survivors are: his wife, Mrs. Annie C. Staggers of the home; one son, Dexter Staggers of Ft. Lauderdale, Florida; one daughter, Lisa Michell McFarland of Ft. Lauderdale, Florida; a baby sister reared as a daughter, Carolyn Joann Green of West Palm Beach, Florida; two god-daughters he reared as his own, Catherine M. Kinder of Deerfield Beach, Florida; and Ronda Engram; two brothers, Charles Staggers of Mershon, Georgia; and Joe Staggers of Kingstree; three sisters, Mrs. Alberta Glasscho of Cades; Mrs. Annie Mae Edwards of Columbia; and Mrs. Deloris Cooper of Lake Worth, Florida; and his step-mother-in-law, Mrs. Mary Lee Burgess of Kingstree.
IVA TISDALE -- Mrs. Iva Gertrude Tisdale Tisdale, 97, widow of W. Branson Tisdale, died Fri., Feb. 28, 2003, in a Kingstree nursing home. Funeral services were held Sun., March 2, 2003, at Cedar Grove Baptist Church. Burial, directed by Williamsburg Funeral Home, followed at Tisdale Cemetery. Mrs. Tisdale was born in Williamsburg County, a daughter of the late Samuel and Ellen Phillips Tisdale. She was a retired nurse's aide and homemaker. Mrs. Tisdale was an accomplished quilter and a member of Cedar Grove Baptist Church, where she was a member of Jolly Elders and a former Sunday school teacher. Memorials may be made to Tisdale Cemetery Fund.
CHARLOTTE BROWN -- Funeral services for Mrs. Charlotte L. Brown, conducted by the Rev. M. S. Williams, were held Sun., March 2, 2003, at Greater Jerusalem A.M.E. Church in Lane. Burial, directed by Henryhand Funeral Home, followed at the churchyard cemetery. Mrs. Brown, widow of Lawrence Brown, Sr., died Feb. 25, 2003. She was born May 21, 1929, in Williamsburg County, a daughter of the late George Cooper, Sr., and Elouise Dunmore Cooper. She was educated in Williamsburg County public Schools. She was a member of Greater Jerusalem A.M.E. Church. Survivors are: five daughters, Mrs. Lillie Mae Brown and Mrs. Ethel Porcha, both of Lane; Mrs. Pauline Davis of Morrisville; Mrs. Elouise Davis of Goldsboro, North Carolina and Mrs. Theresa Green of the home; three sons, Lawrence Brown, Jr., of Lane; Saul Alton Brown of Florence; and Paul S. Brown of Columbia; she also raised four grandchildren as her own, Gregory T. Green and Qulana Brown of the home; and Alonzo Staggers and Craig Staggers, both of Kingstree; one brother, Lutheo Cooper of Philadelphia, Pennsylvania; three sisters, Mrs. Bertha Sabb of Jacksonville, Florida; Mrs. Margaret Bradshaw and Mrs. Ida Mack, both of Philadelphia, Pennsylvania; 24 grandchildren; and 11 great-grandchildren.
