FANNIE COOPER -- Funeral services for Mrs. Fannie Riggins Cooper, conducted by the Rev. Joseph D. Ricks, were held Sat., Sept. 20, 2003, at Oak Grove Missionary Baptist Church in Salters. Burial, directed by Redmond-Richardson Funeral Home, followed at Rocky Ford Cemetery. Mrs. Cooper, 49, a housewife, died Mon., Sept. 18, 2003, at McLeod Regional Medical Center in Florence. Mrs. Cooper was born June 18, 1954, in Salters, a daughter of Mrs. Mary Lee Cokley and the late Isaac "Boss Man" Riggins. She received her formal education and graduated from the public schools of Williamsburg County. Survivors, in addition to her mother of Salters, are: her husband, James "Brother" Brown Cooper of the home; two sons, Jimmy Cooper and Kevin A. Cooper, both of the home; one step-son, Robert Cooper of Jersey City, New Jersey; six step-daughters, Vivian Cooper of Kingstree; Patricia Cooper, Denise Cooper and Carolyn Cooper, all of Jersey City, New Jersey; Dorothy Cooper of Hatsville, Maryland; and Charlette Cooper of Baltimore, Maryland; two brothers, Jimmy Riggins and Willie James Riggins, both of Salters; and two sisters, Verdell Cain of Kingstree; and Jannie Lee Riggins of Salters.

MACKIE McCREA -- Funeral services for Mackie James McCrea, husband of Mae Ruth Bradley McCrea, conducted by Brother Moses Wilson, were held Sunday, September 14, 2003, at Kingdom Hall of Jehovah's Witness in Kingstree. Burial, directed by Henryhand Funeral Home, followed in the Kingdom Hall Cemetery. Mr. McCrea died Thursday, September 11, 2003, after an extended illness. He was born May 22, 1915, in Christian Field, a large farming area in Salters, a son of the late Sam Kellahan and Viola McCrea. He grew up in Williamsburg County, where he received his formal education, graduating from Tomlinson High School. He also attended South Carolina State University. He served in the Army in the Pacific during World War II as a private first class. He then moved to Washington, DC, where he was employed by the railroad as a Pullman porter and later retired from the U.S. Census Bureau. Mr. McCrea also the drove the famous number 1335 taxicab for Capitol Cab Company in Washington, DC, for over twenty years. Survivors, in addition to his wife, include: two sons, Floyd Michael McCrea of Kingstree and Mackie James McCrea, Jr., of Washington, DC; two daughters, Barbara Barnes of Lanham, Maryland and Vermelle McCrea of Kingstree; two sisters, Rutha Lee McCant of Baltimore, Maryland and Annie Mae Davis of Pasadena, Maryland; one brother, Louis McBride of Glen Dale, Maryland; five grandchildren and two great-grandchildren.

HOWARD DURANT -- A memorial service for Howard Underdown DuRant, 65, was held Thursday, September 18, 2003, at Bethesda Presbyterian Church in Camden. A graveside service, directed by Williamsburg Funeral Home, was held Friday, September 19, 2003, at Union Presbyterian Church in Salters. Mr. DuRant died Wednesday, September 17, 2003, in a Camden hospital. He was born in Florence, a son of the late John Wesley DuRant, Sr., and Emily Underdown DuRant. He was a graduate of The Citadel, a ten year survivor of a lung transplant and a member and elder of Bethesda Presbyterian Church. Survivors include: his wife, Angelyn Odom DuRant of Camden; one brother, John Wesley DuRant, Jr., one sister, Susan DuRant Davis; three children, Melanie DuRant Newman and Emily DuRant McLaughlin both of Camden; and Howard Underdown DuRant, Jr., of Duluth, Georgia; and six grandchildren. Memorials may be made to Bethesda Presbyterian Church in Camden, SC.

WILLIAM HORTON, SR. -- Funeral services for William B. "Bill" Horton, Sr., 87, were held Thursday, September 18, 2003, in the Kingstree United Methodist Church. Burial, directed by Williamsburg Funeral Home, followed in Kingstree Memorial Gardens. Mr. Horton died Monday, September 15, 2003, in a Kingstree hospital. He was born in Lancaster County, a son of the late Daniel Wiley Horton and Jerusha Hinson Horton. He attended Lancaster County schools and was retired from Williamsburg Funeral Home. He was an Army veteran of World War II, serving in England, North Africa and in Italy as an escort to Gen. Mark W. Clark. Mr. Horton was a member of the American Legion and a Mason and Shriner. He received the Order of the Palmetto from then Gov. David Beasley in 1996. He retired in 1996 after 50 years of service to the Kingstree Fire Department, 40 of those as Volunteer Fire Chief. He was a member of Kingstree United Methodist Church. Survivors include: his wife, Laura Altman Horton; one daughter, Jane; one son Billy; one sister, Ann H. Harper of Elgin; four grandchildren and five great-grandchildren. Memorials may be made to Kingstree United Methodist Church.

LETITA P. BARRINEAU -- Funeral services for Letita Huggins Parsons Barrineau, 84, widow of Clyde Barrineau, were held Wednesday, September 17, 2003, in the Kingstree United Methodist Church. Burial, directed by Williamsburg Funeral Home, followed in Kingstree Memorial Gardens. Mrs. Barrineau was born in Hemingway, a daughter of the late George Anderson Huggins and Sephy Ella Brown Huggins. She was a member of Kingstree United Methodist Church and the Eugene Chapter of the Order of the Eastern Star. She was first married to the late Frank Parsons. Survivors include: one daughter, Gayle P. Owens of Columbia; one sister, Odean H. Smith of Andrews; one brother, Phillip Huggins, Sr., of Hemingway; two grandchildren and five great-grandchildren. Memorials may be made to the American Heart Association or the American Lung Association.

GERTRUDE COOPER -- Ethel Gertrude "Trudy" Mc-Clary Cooper, 74, wife of Charles Henry Cooper, died Fri., Sept. 26, 2003, at the Medical University of South Carolina in Charleston. Funeral services for Mrs. Cooper, conducted by the Rev. Wayne Ellis, the Rev. Bob Huggins and the Rev. Bob Cline, were held Sun., Sept. 28, 2003, at the Screven Baptist Church. Burial, directed by The Georgetown Chapel of McKenzie Funeral Home, followed in Pennyroyal Memorial Gardens. Mrs. Cooper was born March 29, 1929, in Salters, a daughter of Samuel Verdo "Dodie" McClary and Addie Hanna McClary. She was a graduate of Kingstree High School. She was a member of the Screven Baptist Church. Survivors, in addition to her husband of Georgetown, are: one son, Charles Edward Cooper of Georgetown; two daughters, Jeanie C. Goodwin and Claire C. Davis, both of Georgetown; one brother, Herbert J. McCutcheon of St. Stephen; one sister, Lois M. Hogan of Conway; and three grandchildren. Memorials may be made to Trio United Methodist Church, 976 Rowell Road, Salters, South Carolina 29590; or Screven Baptist Church, 2221 South Island Road, Georgetown, South Carolina 29440.

ELLA CURRY -- Funeral services for Mrs. Ella Washington Curry, conducted by the Rev. Johnathan Brown and the Rev. Eddie Miller, were held Sat., Oct. 25, 2003, at Dimery and Rogers Funeral Home Chapel. Burial, directed by Dimery and Rogers Funeral Home, followed at Dr. James Cemetery. Mrs. Curry, 86, died Tues., Oct. 21, 2003, at Kenneth Stone Hospital in Marietta, Georgia. She was born Nov. 19, 1916, a daughter of the late Ben Washington and Minnie Graham Washington. She attended the public schools of Williamsburg County. She was formerly em-ployd as an examiner at a manufacturing company. She was a member of Elijah United Methodist Church. Survivors are: one daughter, Mrs. Edna Curry of Marietta, Georgia; one sister, Mrs. Betsy Bethea of Dillon; and three grandchildren.

WALLY WASHINGTON -- Funeral service for Wally Joe Washington, conducted by the Rev. Livingston, were held Sat., Oct. 25, 2003, at Antioch Missionary Baptist Church in the Cedar Swamp Community. Burial, directed by Dimery and Rogers Funeral Home, followed in the churchyard cemetery. Mr. Washington, 61, died Sun., Oct. 19, 2003, in District Heights, Maryland. He was born Nov. 26, 1941, a son of the late Annie Washington and Wally Washing-ton. He attended the public schools of Williamsburg County. He was a member of Carolina Missionary Baptist Church in Maryland. He retired from Montgomery County Schools in Maryland. Survivors are: his wife, Mrs. Lulether Graham Washington of District Heights, Maryland; two sons, Alfred Joe Washington of District Heights, Maryland; and Norman Graham of Atlanta, Georgia; one daughter, Mrs. Tiwanda Washington Settlers of Capitol Heights, Maryland; his mother-in-law, Mrs. Ruby Graham of Kingstree; two brothers, William David Washington of Forrestville, Maryland; and Willie James Washington of Washington, DC; five sisters, Mrs. Mary Moore of Sumter; Mrs. Geraldine Richardson of Philadelphia, Pennsylvania; Mrs. Annie McCutcheon of Washington, DC; Mrs. Patricia Graham of Mt. Ranier, Maryland; and Mrs. Barbara Washington of Washing-ton, DC; and two grandchildren.

MARTHA McCREA -- Funeral services for Mrs. Martha Bradley McCrea, conducted by Dr. Charles Connor, were held Sat., Oct. 25, 2003, at St. Michael United Methodist Church. Burial, directed by Dimery and Rogers Funeral Home, followed at the churchyard cemetery. Mrs. McCrea, 82, died Mon., Oct. 20, 2003, at her residence in Kingstree. She was born Sept. 30, 1921, a daughter of the late Marion Bradley and Jeanette Bradley. She attended the public schools of Williamsburg County. She was a member of St. Michael United Methodist Church. Survivors are: two sons, Elijah McCrea of Andrews; and Lee June McCrea of Trio.

THOMAS McCLARY -- Funeral services for Thomas Howard McClary, conducted by the Rev. Clyde Henryhand, were held Fri., Oct. 17, 2003, at Clauddie Henryhand Memorial Chapel in Kingstree. Burial, directed by Henryhand Funeral Home, followed at St. Mary A.M.E. Churchyard Cemetery in Salters. Mr. McClary died Fri., Oct. 10, 2003, at Georgetown Memorial Hospital in Georgetown. He was born Nov. 21, 1938, in Williamsburg County, a son of Mrs. Mary Tisdale McClary and the late Saul McClary. He was educated in the public schools of Williamsburg County. He was a member of St. Mary A.M.E. Church in Salters. He was formerly employed with Enterborrow Roofing Company. He was married to the late Mary Lee Ford. Survivors, in addition to his mother of Split Rock Nursing Home of Bronx, New York, are: two children, James McClary and Rebecca McClary, both of Rochester, New York; and two brothers, Marion McClary of Teaneck, New Jersey; and Clyde McClary of Mt. Vernon, New York.
