Posted By: GenealogyBuff.com SOLOMON FLUITT -- Funeral services for Solomon Bubba "Saul" Fluitt, conducted the Rev. Standy McCray and the Rev. Leroy Epps, were held Thurs., Oct. 16, 2003, at North Kingstree Baptist Church in Kingstree. Burial, directed by Henryhand Funeral Home, followed at Singletary Cemetery. Mr. Fluitt died Sun., Oct. 12, 2003. He was born Oct. 15, 1935, in Salters, a son of the late Willie and Annie Fluitt. He attended Marion Baptist Church. He attended Marion School during his elementary years and continued on to Blakely High School. Shortly afterwards, he moved to New York City and began working as a jeweler. He was employed by David Freidman and Son for 43 years. He was first married to the late Hattie Curry. Survivors are: his wife, Margaret Fluitt; five children, Erma Cooper of Kingstree; Barbara White of Andrews; Desiree Purvis of Brooklyn, New York; Christa Fluitt of Westbury, New York; and Yvette Fluitt of Bronx, New York; two brothers, John Fluitt of Central Islip, New York; and Willie Fluitt, Jr., of Jacksonville, Florida; three sisters, Edith Fluitt of Bronx, New York; Margaret Burgess and Ruby Cain, both of Lawnside, New Jersey; eight grandchildren; and eight great-grandchildren.
LOIS AVANT -- Lois P. Avant, 80, widow of William B. Avant, Sr., died Thurs., Oct. 23, 2003, in Williamsburg Regional Hospital in Kingstree. Funeral services for Mrs. Avant, conducted by the Rev. W.B. Avant, III, were held Sat., Oct. 25, 2003, at her residence. Burial, directed by Graham Funeral Home, followed at Andrews Memorial Cemetery. Mrs. Avant was born June 16, 1923, in Williamsburg County, a daughter of the late Richard James Player and Florence Young Player. She attended the Christian Fortress. She served as a volunteer with a number of charities for many years. Survivors are: her son, W.B. Avant, Jr., of Andrews; two sisters, Iva Mae Silverthorne of Hartsville; and Susie Marsh of Andrews; two grandchildren; four great-grandchildren, and one great-great-grandchild.
BARBARA SINGLETARY -- Funeral services for Mrs. Barbara Nell Jenkins Singletary, conducted by the Rev. Earlie Singletary and the Rev. Mack R. Singletary, were held Sat., Oct. 25, 2003, at St. Michael Holiness Church in Lake City. Burial, directed by Samuels and Richardson Funeral Home, followed at Eaddy Ford Cemetery in Johnsonville. Mrs. Singletary died Tues., Oct. 21, 2003, at her residence in Passaic, New Jersey. She was born Feb. 3, 1953, in Lake City, a daughter of the late Milton Jenkins, Sr., and Suella Singletary Jenkins. She received her formal education in the public schools of Florence County. She worked for a number of years at MacGregor Basketball Company. She was also a home caregiver. She was married to Robert Singletary, Sr. Survivors are: two daughters, Mrs. Lisa V. Fields of Passaic, New Jersey; and Roxzell F. Singletary of the home; one son, Robert Singletary, Sr., of Myrtle Beach; three brothers, Roy Jenkins, General Jenkins and Milton Jenkins, Jr., all of Passaic, New Jersey; three sisters, Mrs. Carolyn Sanders, Mrs. Luvenia McFadden and Mrs. Aquilla Jenkins, all of Lake City; and eight grandchildren.
JOYCE JAMES -- Funeral services for Petty Officer Joyce James, conducted by Pastor Jerry Hall, were held Sat., Oct. 25, 2003, at Greater St. James A.M.E. Church of Lake City. Burial, directed by Samuels and Richardson Funeral Home, followed at Florence National Cemetery. Petty Officer James of Goose Creek and formerly of Scranton, 27, died Sat., Oct. 18, 2003, as a result of injuries sustained in an automobile accident. She was born Dec. 23, 1975, in Jacksonville, Florida, a daughter of Brenda James McElveen and the late Jim Hines. She attended the public schools of Florence County and graduated from Lake City High School. She was a sergeant in the United States Navy. Survivors, in addition to her mother of Scranton, are: one daughter, Tasha McElveen of Scranton; her fiance, E-4 Liztellist Punch of Shreveport, Louisiana; two brothers, Kevin Hines of Scranton; and Jamie James of Lake City; one sister, Kim James of Scranton; her maternal grandmother, Mrs. Pearl McElveen of Effingham; and her maternal grandfather, Henry West of Jacksonville, Florida.
DAVE SHAW, JR. -- Funeral services for Dave Shaw, Jr., conducted by the Rev. Frank V. James, were held Mon., Oct. 27, 2003, at the William N. Redmond Memorial Chapel in Kingstree. Burial, directed by Redmond-Richardson Funeral Home, followed at St. Paul United Methodist Church Cemetery. Mr. Shaw, 86, died Fri., Oct. 24, 2003, at Winyah Convalescent Center in Georgetown. He was born July 31, 1917, in Kingstree, a son of the late Frank Shaw and Elsie Boyd Shaw. He received his formal education in the public schools of Williamsburg County. He worked all of his life as a farmer. Survivors include eight nieces and nephews: Mrs. Margie Johnson of Greeleyville; Mrs. Julia Miller of Salters; Moses Shaw, Jannie Brown, Mrs. Judy McKever, Jacob Boyd, Joe Louis McCrea and James McCrea, all of Kingstree.
JAMES MACK -- Funeral services for James C. "Sassy" Mack, conducted by the Rev. Frank V. James, were held Wed., Oct. 29, 2003, at St. Paul United Methodist Church in Kingstree. Burial, directed by Redmond-Richardson Funeral Home, followed at Greenlawn Cemetery. Mr. Mack, 83, died Fri., Oct. 24, 2003, at Williamsburg Regional Hospital in Kingstree. He was born June 1, 1920, in Kingstree, a son of the late Breamer and Margaret Mack. He received his formal education in the public schools of Williamsburg County. He worked as a machine operator for a number of years at Drexel Heritage. He was a member of St. Paul United Methodist Church. He was married to the late Mrs. Pearlie McClary Mack. Survivors are: three sons, Jessie Mack and Charles Mack, both of Kingstree; and Leroy Mack of Rochester, New York; two daughters, Mrs. Mary E. Redden of Cades; and Mrs. Jannie Bell of Hampton, Virginia; three brothers, Dave Mack and Alton Murphy, both of Kingstree; and Walter Murphy of Rochester, New York; 23 grandchildren; and 33 great-grandchildren.
HENRY FOXWORTH -- Henry J. "Tom" Foxworth, 76, died Mon., Oct. 13, 2003, at his daughter's home. Funeral services were held Wed., Oct. 15, 2003, at Lake City Church of God. Burial, directed by Brockington Funeral Home, followed at Lake City Memorial Park. Mr. Foxworth was born in Williamsburg County, a son of the late Henry J. and Aline Cook Foxworth. He was a truck driver for Gowdy Grain Company and a member of Lake City Church of God. Survivors are: his wife, Clara Wellington Foxworth of Lake City; four daughters, Vivian Welch of Turbeville; Gloria Harris of Kingstree; Miriam Owens of Lake City; and Kathy Powell of Pamplico; two sons, Preston Foxworth of Batesburg; and Terry Foxworth of Scranton; one brother, Roland Foxworth of Lake City; one sister, Rita Foxworth of Turbeville; 13 grandchildren; and 14 great-grandchildren.
RANNIE McKNIGHT, SR. -- Funeral services for Rannie McKnight, Sr., conducted by the Rev. Joseph D. Ricks and the Rev. C.W. Green, were held Wed., Oct. 15, 2003, at the Oak Grove Missionary Baptist Church in Salters. Burial, directed by Redmond-Richardson Funeral Home, followed at Porter-Ferrell Cemetery. Mr. McKnight, 85, a retired farmer, died Thurs., Oct. 9, 2003, at the Williamsburg Regional Hospital in Kingstree. He was born May 26, 1918, in Williamsburg County, a son of the late Nathan McKnight, Sr. and Ella McClary McKnight. He received his formal education in the public schools of Williamsburg County. He was a member of Oak Grove Missionary Baptist Church. He was first married to the late Mrs. Lelia Mae Prince McKnight and later married to Mrs. Mary Green McKnight. Survivors are: one son, Rannie McKnight, Jr. of New Haven, Connecticut; two daughters, Mrs. Ella Mae Shaw of New Haven, Connecticut; and Mrs. Ruby L. Harrison-Heyward of Kingstree; two step-sons, Junior Green of Salters; and James Green of Kingstree; one brother, Nathan McKnight, Jr. of Salters; 33 grandchildren; 52 great-grandchildren; and 13 great-great-grandchildren.
THOMAS DUKES -- Funeral services for Thomas B. Dukes, conducted by the Rev. Alfred Griffin and the Rev. Olin Dukes, were held Sat., Oct. 18, 2003, at Bethel United Methodist Church. Burial, directed by Dimery and Rogers Funeral Home, followed at the churchyard cemetery. Mr. Dukes, 67, died Tues., Oct. 14, 2003, at his residence in Kingstree. He was born April 15, 1936, a son of the late Oliver Dukes and Mary Scott Dukes. He attended the public schools of Williamsburg County. He was formerly employed as a logger. Mr. Dukes was a member of Bethel United Methodist Church and St. Mark Hunting Club. Survivors are: two daughters, Mrs. Angela McClary of Kingstree; and Mrs. Barbara Attha of New Jersey; four sisters, Mrs. Ada Jackson, Mrs. Waverly Lee Young, Mrs. Verlese McGee and Mrs. Dorothy Gibson, all of Rochester, New York; two brothers, Thomas Dukes and Roosevelt Johnson of Andrews; cousins, whom were reared like sisters and brothers, Gus Scott, Wendell Scott, Lillian Burrows and Mrs. Marie Scott, all of Kingstree; Mrs. Maxine Brown of Yonkers, New York; and Mrs. Lillie S. Brown of Silver Springs, Maryland; and three grandchildren.
EDNA BECOTE -- Funeral services for Mrs. Edna Redden Becote, conducted by the Rev. Rebecca Evans, were held Sat., Oct. 18, 2003, at Beulah A.M.E. Church. Burial, directed by Dimery and Rogers Funeral Home, followed at the churchyard cemetery. Mrs. Becote, 83, died Tues., Oct. 14, 2003, in Darlington. She was born April 27, 1910, a daughter of the late William and Letha Jane Pressley Readding. She attended the public schools of Williamsburg County. She was formerly employed as a seamstress. Mrs. Becote was a member of Beulah A.M.E. Church, where she served as church missionary, church stewardess and sang on the choir. Surviving is one sister, Mrs. Hattie Readding Fulton of Winston Salem, North Carolina.
