Posted By: GenealogyBuff.com McKNIGHT -- Funeral services for Robert Lee McKnight, III, were held Friday, May 30, 1997, at Bethlehem Baptist Church in Salters, conducted by Rev. B. J. Gordon, Jr. and Rev. Bonus Miller. Burial followed in the Crossroads Cemetery in Salters directed by Redmond-Richardson Funeral Home. Rev. McKnight, 36, died Sunday, May 25, 1997, at his residence in Salters. He was born Sept. 2, 1960, in Greeleyville, the son of Mrs. Florie Lillian Woods Davis and the late Robert Lee McKnight, Jr. He graduated from Kingstree Senior High School in 1978 and attended Trident Technical College, where he majored in electronics. He was a member of Bethlehem Baptist Church where he sang in the choir and was the church musician. He also was a former member of the Spiritual-Aires. He was director of music, a pastor's assistant, an adult Sunday school teacher and a Bible study instructor. For a while, he was the pastor of the Original Mount Olive Baptist Church. He served six years in in the United States Air Force. He was employed by Williamsburg County Memorial in Kingstree and Lake City Community Hospital as a respiratory therapist. He later changed professions and became a computer programmer for Williamsburg County Transit System, Williamsburg County Art Museum, Williamsburg County Court System, Williamsburg County School District, local churches and businesses. Survivors, in addition to his mother of the home; are: two daughters, Annie Evon McKnight of New Zion; and Robin Murray of Greeleyville; his grandmother, Mrs. Florie Lee Scott of the home; his grandfather, Willis McFadden of Philadelphia, Pa.; three sisters, Mrs. Elizabeth Washington of Atlanta, Georgia; Lula Mae Davis of New Haven, Ct.; and Mrs. Diane Woods of Fairfield, TX; and one brother, Leroy McKnight of New Haven, Ct.
COOPER -- Funeral services for Mrs. Hattie Mae Barr Cooper were held Friday, May 23, 1997, at Wilson Chapel First Missionary Baptist Church in Kingstree, conducted by Rev. B. J. Gordon. Burial followed in Faith United Methodist Church Cemetery in Kingstree directed by Dimery and Rogers. Mrs. Cooper, 94, died Saturday, May 16, 1997, at her home in Kingstree. She was born July 22, 1902, in Williamsburg County, a daughter of the late James Barr and Nettie Barr. She was a member of Wilson Chapel First Missionary Baptist Church and sang on the church choir and was Mother of the Church. She was also a member of the Good Hope Chapter Order of the Eastern Star No. 269. Survivors are: three sons, James Cooper of Manhattan, N.Y.; Alfred Cooper of Brooklyn, N.Y.; and Wade Cooper of Bronx, N.Y.; three daughters, Mrs. Queen Studivant of Mt. Vernon, N.Y.; Mrs. Gloria McKnight and Mrs. Margo Gordon, both of Kingstree; and one brother, Mickey Cooper of Salters.
LARY -- Funeral services for Stephanie Dervonna Lary were held Saturday, Jay 23, 1997, at St. John Station A.M.E. Church in Trio, conducted by Rev. Frank Hughee. Burial followed in St. John Station A.M.E. Church Cemetery in Trio directed by Dimery and Rogers Funeral Home. Stephanie, 3, died May 20, 1997, at the Medical University of South Carolina. She was born February 5, 1994, in Florence, a daughter of Stevie Lary and Doretha Washington Flemming. She attended Evangelistic Temple Way of the Cross Day Care Center. She was a member of St. John Station A.M.E. Church. Survivors, in addition to her parents, are: one sister, Lasdesha Lary of Andrews; two brothers, Fayton Washington and Rapheal Washington, both of Salters; and her grandmother, Mrs. Dora Bell Lary of Harleyville, S.C.
BROWN -- Funeral services for Joseph Brown were held Tuesday, May 20, 1997, at Dimery and Rogers Funeral Home Chapel in Kingstree, conducted by Rev. Robert Poinsett. Mr. Brown, 65, died Friday, May 16, 1997, at Carolinas Hospital System-Kingstree. He was born February 22, 1932, in Williamsburg County. He was a veteran in the United States Army.
DOZIER -- Funeral services for Deacon Dearie Ray Dozier were held Wednesday, June 4, 1997, at Marion Baptist Church in Salters, conducted by Rev. Jimmy Brockington. Burial followed in the Marion Memorial Gardens in Salters directed by Redmond-Richardson Funeral Home. Dea. Dozier, 75, died Friday, May 30, 1997, at Richland Memorial Hospital in Columbia. He was born November 21, 1921, in Williamsburg County, the son of the late James Polly Dozier and Chessie Cryus Dozier. He was reared by his step-mother, the late Mrs. Margaret Montgomery Dozier. He was a member of Marion Baptist Church, where he served as a deacon, church treasurer and Sunday school superintendent. He earned his bachelor of science and master of education degrees from South Carolina State College in Orangeburg. He began his teaching career in Wiliamsburg County. He served as principal of Warsaw School and Lane Elementary School. He also served as Assistant Principal at Blakely-Williamsburg Elementary. He was a member of the South Carolina Football and Basketball Association, the South Carolina Teacher's Association, the Kingstree Big Five Guild, the Williamsburg Enterprise Community Commission (WECC), a life long member, Kappa Alpha Psi Fraternity, Incorporated where he once served as the Polemarch. Survivors are: his wife, Mrs. Naomi Miller Dozier of the home; two daughters Uvetta B. Dozier of Washington, D.C.; Mrs. Norma L. Dozier-McAllister of Columbia; one son, Derril D. Dozier of Alexandria, Va.; one adopted daughter, Lola Cooper of Salters; and three sisters, Mrs. Wilma Williams of Salters; Edith Elim of Augusta, Ga.; and Mrs. Mary Lee Thompson of Cleveland, Md.
BLAKLEY -- Carl Blakley, 53, died Saturday, June 7, 1997, in Andrews. Funeral services were held Monday, June 9, 1997, in Bloomingvale Baptist Church, conducted by Rev. Bill Harrison and Rev. Frank Barker. Burial followed in the Bloomingvale Baptist Churchyard directed by Andrews Chapel of Mayer Funeral Home. Mr. Blakley was born in Williamsburg County near Andrews on August 14, 1943, a son of the late John Henry Blakley and Nealy Mae Wiggins Blakley. He grew up in Williamsburg County and attended Williamsburg School. Mr. Blakley retired after many years as owner and operator of Carl Blakley Logging and was presently the owner of Blakley's Country Bar-B-Q Restaurant. Mr. Blakley attended Bloomingvale Baptist Church. Survivors are: his wife, Wanda Mobley Blakley of Andrews; one daughter, Sheryl B. McElveen of Andrews; and two brothers, B. Wiggins Blakley and J. Cecil Blakley, both of Andrews.
WALTERS -- Funeral services for Roland Author Walters were held Friday, June 9, 1997, at Marion Baptist Church in Salters, conducted by Rev. Jimmy Brockington. Burial followed in Salters Cemetery directed by Dimery and Rogers Funeral Home. Mr. Walters, 90, died Monday, June 9, 1997, at Carolinas Hospital System-Kingstree. He was born in Berkeley County January 8, 1907, a son of the late Charles Walters and Lucille Walters. He was a farmer. He was a member of Marion Baptist Church and served as a church deacon and church clerk. Survivors are: his wife, Mrs. Fannie M. Walters of Salters; five sons, Charlie Walters of Washington, D.C.; Samuel Walters of Miami, Florida; Richard Walters of New York City, N.Y.; George Walters of Minneapolis, Minnesota; John Henry Walters of New York City, N.Y.; eight daughters, Mrs. Stella Dozier of Salters; Mrs. Mary Gore of Little River, S.C.; Mrs. Rebecca Dargan of Sparta, Georgia; Lucille Walters of Miami, Florida; Mrs. Geraldine Conyers of Jamaica, N.Y.; Mrs. Emily Hood of Ridgeland, S.C.; Mrs. Jannie Wyatt of Ft. Wayne, Indiana; and Mrs. Reatha Williams of Philadelphia, Pa.; and two grandchildren he reared as his own, Kirk Walters of Korea; and Mrs. Constance Halsey of Sparta, Georgia.
DANTZLER -- Funeral services for Mrs. Maggie McClary Franklin Dantzler were held Saturday, June 7, 1997, at Apostolic Bibleway Church in Kingstree, conducted by Elder O. D. Franklin and District Elder John Smith. Burial followed in Greenlawn Cemetery in Kingstree directed by Dimery and Rogers Funeral Home. Mrs. Dantzler, 87, died Sunday, June 1, 1997, at Carolinas Hospital System-Florence. She was born April 15, 1910, in Williamsburg County, a daughter of the late Steve McClary and Bessie McClary. She was a homemaker and a farmer. She was a member of Apostolic Bibleway Church, where she was mother of the church. Survivors are: six sons, Davis Franklin, Joseph Franklin, Dozier Franklin, Rev. O.D. Franklin, Jacob Dantzler and Esau Dantzler, all of Kingstree.
BURGESS -- Edward Carroll Burgess, Jr., 77, died Thursday, June 12, 1997, at his residence. Funeral services were held Friday, June 13, 1997, at Williamsburg Cemetery. Burial was directed by Williamsburg Funeral Home. Mr. Burgess was born in Williamsburg County, a son of the late Edward Carroll Burgess, Sr. and Mamie Nexsen Burgess. He was a graduate of Williamsburg County schools and Clemson University. Mr. Burgess served as a captain in the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers and was a retired farmer. He was a member of Kingstree Presbyterian Church where he served as Elder Emeritus and was also a member of Kingstree Lions Club where he served as secretary-treasurer for approximately 35 years. Surviving is one sister, Mrs. Mae Burgess Johnson of Hemingway.
WILSON -- Funeral services for Mrs. Ruth Pressley Wilson were held June 14, 1997, at St. Mary A.M.E. Church in Salters, conducted by Rev. Nathan Morris. Burial followed at St. Mary A.M.E. Church Cemetery directed by Dimery and Rogers Funeral Home. Mrs. Wilson died June 9, 1997, at Morton Plant Hospital in Clearwater, Florida. She was born December 9, 1935, in Williamsburg County, a daughter of the late Watis Pressley and Moriah Davis Pressley. She was employed as a homemaker. She was a member of St. Mary A.M.E. Church. While living in Florida she attended St. John Primitive Baptist Church in Clearwater, Florida. Survivors are: two sons, Edward Louis Wilson of Salters; and James McCrea of Clearwater, Fla.; three daughters, Mrs. Pearl Nesmith of Salters; Corenthia Wilson and Mrs. Charlene McCrea, both of Clearwater, Fla.; a step-daughter, Mrs. Ineatha Lowery of Largo, Fla.; three brothers, Henry Pressley and David Pressley, both of Salters; and Watis Pressley of Clearwater, Florida; and one sister, Mrs. Jannie Mae McCrea of Salters.
