Posted By: GenealogyBuff.com CHANDLER -- Funeral services for Levi Chandler were held Thursday, January 22, 1998, at Saint Michael United Methodist Church in Kingstree, conducted by Rev. Charles Connor, Jr. Burial followed in the churchyard cemetery directed by Redmond-Richardson Funeral Home. Mr. Chandler, 65, died Saturday, January 17, 1998, at Carolinas Hospital System-Florence. He was born November 29, 1932, in Williamsburg County, the son of the late Riller Chandler. He was a member of Saint Michael United Methodist Church. Survivors are: his wife, Mrs. Bessie L. Chandler of the home; two daughters, Mrs. Betty Cooper and Mrs. Elizabeth "Linda" Strong, both of Kingstree; a granddaughter he reared as his very own, Yolonda Latrice Singletary of the home; three brothers, Chappell Chandler of Philadelphia, Pa.; Clifford Earl Chandler and Herman Chandler, both of Kingstree; five sisters, Mrs. Josephine Wilson, Mrs. Virginia Smith and Ruth Mae Chandler, all of Philadelphia, Pa.; Mrs. Thomasena Terrell of Rochester, N.Y.; and Janie Lou Chandler of Kingstree.
JACKSON -- Funeral services for Mrs. Rebecca Ann Wilson Jackson were held Thursday, January 22, 1998, at St. Luke United Methodist Church in Salters. Mrs. Jackson died Sunday, January 18, 1998, at Carolinas Hospital System-Florence. She was born November 12, 1926, in Williamsburg County, a daughter of the late Joseph and Mary Wilson. She was a member of St. Luke United Methodist Church. Survivors are: two daughters, Maggie Chisolm of Salters and Sarah Mitchell of Trio; one son, Henry Jackson of Salters; her mother-in-law, Mrs. Girline Jackson; and one adopted sister, Mrs. Arie S. Mouzon.
PHILLIPS -- Mrs. Annie Kathryn McClary Phillips, 82, the wife of Leslie J. Phillips, Sr., died Saturday, January 10, 1998, in a Florence hospital. Funeral services were held Monday, January 12, 1998, in Cedar Grove Baptist Church. Burial followed in the church cemetery directed by Williamsburg Funeral Home. Mrs. Phillips was born in Williamsburg County, a daughter of Aletha Mazell Dubose and Joseph Zeno McClary, Sr. She was a graduate of Kingstree High School and was a homemaker. She was also a member of Cedar Grove Baptist Church. Survivors, in addition to her husband of Kingstree, are: four sons, Jervais Phillips of Brentwood, TN; Julian H. Phillips of Florence; Robert J. Phillips and Reuben D. Phillips, both of Kingstree; two daughters, Barbara Chandler of Greeleyville; and Hazel Bradham of Manning; and three sisters, Evelyn M. McCutchen of Moncks Corner; Mildred M. McCutchen of Kingstree; and Frances M. Hanna of Manning.
MCGILL -- Funeral services for Mrs. Ada Geneva McGill were held Mon., January 19, 1998, at Greater Lane Chapel A.M.E. Church in Lane, conducted by Rev. James Witherspoon. Burial followed in Cowhead Cemetery in Gourdin directed by Dimery and Rogers. Mrs. McGill, 81, died Jan. 14, at Carolinas Hospital System-Florence. She was born July 2, 1916, in Lane, a daughter of the late George Cooper, Sr. and Elouise Dunmore Cooper. She was a farmer. She was church member of Greater Lane Chapel A.M.E. Church. She was a member of the Missionary Society, Stewardess Board and Young People's Christian Association. Survivors are: four sons, Marion McGill, Jr. of Bronx, N.Y.; Winston McGill of Rhode Island, N.Y.; Harry McGill of Phoenix, Arizona; and James Leroy McGill of Washington, D.C.; six daughters, Mrs. Florence Smalls of Summerville; Mrs. Lottie Rious of Washington, D.C.; Mrs. Debra Burgess of Bronx, N.Y.; Mrs. Flora Bells Keels, Mrs. Rosetta Starling and Mrs. Cynthia Holmes, all of Lanes; one brother, Lutheo Cooper of Philadelphia, Pa.; five sisters, Mrs. Bertha Sabb of Jacksonville, Fl; Mrs. Margaret Bradshaw of Philadelphia, Pa.; Mrs. Charlotte Brown of Lane; Mrs. Ida Mack of Philadelphia, Pa.; and Mrs. Theo Conyers of Lane; four grandsons reared as her own, Curtis McGill and Kevin McGill, both of Washington, D.C.; Allen Keels, Jr. and Deacon Shedrick Brown, both of Lane; four granddaughters reared as her own, Delores Rose of Summerville; Gwendolyn McGill of Goose Creek; Jacques Blake and Latonya Brown, both of Lane.
WALL -- Annie Mae Wall, 83, died Friday, January 23, 1998, in a Florence nursing center. Funeral services were held Sunday, January 25, 1998, in the Nesmith Baptist Church. Burial followed in the church cemetery directed by Morris Funeral Home. Ms. Wall was born in Williamsburg County, a daughter of the late Gilbert Clarkson Wall, Sr. and the late Mary Owens Wall. She was a retired registered nurse and a member of the First Baptist Church of Florence. She was a graduate of Williamsburg County schools, Union Graduate School and Saunders Memorial Hospital of Nursing in Florence. Survivors are: three brothers, G. C. Wall, Jr. of Nesmith; Norman Wall of Andrews; and James C. "Bobby" Wall of Kingstree; four sisters, Corrine Lawrimore of Hemingway; Gladys Rodgers of Nesmith; Vivian DeWitt of Jacksonville, FL; and Doris Newton of Wallisville, TX.
SCOTT -- Funeral services for Mrs. Florie Lee Woods Scott were held Saturday, February 7, 1998, at Mount Zion United Methodist Church in Kingstree, conducted by Rev. Willie Wilson. Burial followed at the Crossroads Cemetery directed by Redmond-Richardson Funeral Home. Mrs. Scott, 74, died Monday, February 2, 1998, at her residence in Salters. She was born May 31, 1922, in Williamsburg County, a daughter of the late Rev. July Woods, Sr. and Sister Lizzie Davis Woods. She was a member of Mount Zion United Methodist Church where she sang on the Senior Choir, taught Sunday School and was a member of the United Methodist Women. She worked for a number of years as a farmer. For 16 years, she was employed at Kelly's Nursing Home. Survivors are: two daughters, Mrs. Florie Lillian Davis of the home and Mrs. Janie Mae Gamble of Salters; two sons, Isaac "Hazel" Scott and Willie Davis Scott, both of Greeleyville; and two granddaughters, she reared as her own, Mrs. Elizabeth Althea Washington of Stone Mountain, Ga.; and Diane Woods of Fairfield, Texas.
NELSON -- Funeral services for Mrs. Mary Porter Nelson were held Friday, February 6, 1998, at Mount Zion United Methodist Church in Kingstree, conducted by Rev. Willie Wilson. Burial followed at Greenlawn Cemetery directed by Redmond-Richardson Funeral Home. Mrs. Nelson, 54, died Monday, February 2, 1998, in the McLeod Regional Medical Center in Florence. She was born October 19, 1943, in Georgetown County, a daughter of the late Alfred and Irene Watson Porter. She was a member of Mount Zion United Methodist Church, where she served on the Usher Board, Pastor Parish Relations, Missions, Food Committee and United Methodist Women. She worked at Warsaw Manufacturing of Kingstree and Oxford Industries. Survivors are: her husband, William Nelson of the home; one daughter, Valvieta Yvette Nelson of Kingstree; four sons, Wilfred Lorenzo Nelson of Orlando, FL:; Ronald Nelson of El Paso, TX; Ricky Arnold Nelson and Rodney Nelson, both of the home; one step-son, John Fulton of Manning; a grandson she reared as her own, Cedrick Nelson of Kingstree; four sisters, Mrs. Anna Grace Barcus of Cleveland, OH; Mrs. Dorothy Rhue of Columbia; Albertha Porter and Mrs. Willa Mae Izzard, both of Georgetown; and one brother, James Porter of Columbia.
COOPER -- Funeral services for Mrs. Janie Mae Cooper were held Friday, Feb. 6, 1998, at Bethesda United Methodist Church in Lake City, conducted by Rev. Hayes Gainey. Burial followed in Willie Cooper Cemetery in Nesmith directed by Dimery and Rogers Funeral Home. Mrs. Cooper, 67, died Sat., Jan. 31, 1998, at Carolinas Hospital System-Florence. She was born Nov. 6, 1930, in Williamsburg County, a daughter of the late Mrs. Elizabeth Cooper Stafford. She was a 1950 graduate of Wilson High School. She furthered her education at Morris College and received a bachelor of science degree in elementary education in 1956. She did additional studies at South Carolina State College and USC. Survivors are: two sisters, Mrs. Mattie B. Nesmith of the home; and Corine E. Cooper of Philadelphia, Pa.
GAUSE -- Clarence Wayne Gause, 47, died Wednesday, February 4, 1998, in a Florence hospital. Funeral services were held Saturday, Feb. 7, 1998, in the Kingstree Pentecostal Holiness Church. Burial followed in the church cemetery directed by Williamsburg Funeral Home. Mr. Gause was born in Williamsburg County, a son of Clarence Gause and the late Helen Parker Gause Braggs. He was a member of Kingstree Pentecostal Holiness Church. Survivors, in addition to his father of Kingstree, are: two daughters, Mary Nesmith of Fort Bragg, N.C.; and Julie Walker of Kingstree; his step-mother, Laura Gause of Kingstree; two sisters, Ella Mae Trible of Kingstree; and Tressie Lambert of Andrews; three adopted sisters, Amanda Gause of Kingstree; Rose Cockfield of Lake City; and Mary Owens of Johnsonville; and one adopted brother, Darrell Gause of Kingstree.
NELSON -- Mrs. Lila Pendergrass Nelson died January 29, 1998, at Carolinas Hospital System-Florence. Mrs. Nelson was born July 7, 1908, in Williamsburg County, a daughter of the late John H. Pendergrass and Hester Brockington Pendergrass. She attended Morris College in Sumter. For several years, she taught school in Berkeley County and Williamsburg County. She was a self-employed farmer. She was a member of Greater Bethel African Methodist Episcopal Church where she served as a member of the gospel choir and the Missionary Society. Surviving is one sister, Mrs. Leola P. Jones of Kingstree.
