Posted By: GenealogyBuff.com EMMA BENNETT -- Funeral services for Mrs. Emma Jane June Bennett, conducted by the Rev. Tommy Shurbrick, were held Sat., Feb. 28, 2004, at Good Hope Baptist Church. Burial, directed by Dimery and Rogers Funeral Home, followed at Big Spring Cemetery. Mrs. Bennett, 91, died Sun., Feb. 22, 2004, at Williamsburg Regional Hospital. She was born July 4, 1912, a daughter of the late Robert June and Mary Frierson June. She attended the public schools of Williamsburg County. She was a member of Good Hope Baptist Church, where she served as church missionary and sung on the Senior Choir, Celestial Choir. She was also a member of Abagail Benevolent Society, Mt. Hope Order of Eastern Star, YMCA #12 and YMCA #17. She was a founding member of the Morning Star Singers. Survivors are: two sons, Earl Bennett of Ladson; and Arthur Bennett of Philadelphia, Pennsyl-vania; eight daughters, Mrs. Pearlestine Epps, Mrs. Alice Bennett, Mrs. Annie Mouzon, Mrs. Freddie Marie Bennett, and Mrs. Carolyn Bennett, all of Greeleyville; Mrs. Shirley Brodie Bennett of Pertamboy, New Jersey; Mrs. Nealie Bennett and Mrs. Tracey Sanders, both of Philadelphia, Pennsylvania; grandchildren she reared as her own, Mrs. Glenda Morant and Mrs. Evelyn Patterson, both of Greeleyville; James Epps and Sylvester Bennett, both of Philadelphia, Pennsylvania; 28 grandchildren; 26 great-grandchildren; and eight great-great-grandchildren.
ERNEST McCUTCHEN -- Ernest DeWitt McCutchen, 73, husband of Donna Lillian McCutchen, died Sat., Feb. 28, 2004, at Tuomey Regional Medical Center. Funeral services, conducted by Rev. Clanton, were held Tues., March 2, 2004, at The Crosswell Baptist Church. Burial, directed by Bullock Funeral Home & Crematorium, followed at Evergreen Cemetery. Mr. McCutchen was born in Kingstree, a son of the late DeWitt T. McCutchen and Emma Louise Britton McCutchen. He worked for A&P for 15 years and retired from Crescent Tool after 23 years of service. He was a member of Woodmen of the World and a member of The Crosswell Baptist Church, where he was a former deacon. Survivors, in addition to his wife, are: two sons, Alan McCutchen of Lawtown, Oklahoma; and Gary McCutchen of Rock Hill; one daughter, Linda McCutchen Harris of Suffolk, Virginia; three brothers, Joe McCutchen of Pensacola, Florida; Wayne McCutchen and Earl McCutchen, both of Kingstree; two sisters, Bessie Lowder of Oswego; and Mary Fulton of Georgetown; and five grandchildren. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to The Crosswell Baptist Church, Poinsett Drive & Mathis, Sumter, South Carolina 29150. Pallbearers were Rex Riddle, Frankie Hudson, Bobby Rabon, Ernest Hendrix, Ernest Johnston and Arliss Brown. Honorary pallbearers were D.B. 'Shorty' Rogers, Dr. Billy Clowney and members of The Ann Payne Sunday school class.
JAMES WITHERSPOON, JR. -- Funeral services for the Rev. James Woodrow Witherspoon, Jr., were held Tues., March 2, 2004, at Mt. Zion United Methodist Church in Kingstree. Burial, directed by Dimery and Rogers Funeral Home, followed at Dr. James Cemetery. The Rev. Witherspoon, 74, died Fri., Feb. 27, 2004, at McLeod Hospital in Florence. He was the son of the late Eliza (Teen) Witherspoon Scott. He was educated in the public schools of Williamsburg County. He served in the United States Army. He pastored in the A.M.E. Church. He was a member of the St. Paul A.M.E. Church. Survivors are: his wife, Mrs. Harold (Oat) Witherspoon of the home; two sons, Shelton Jotonia Witherspoon of Ft. Lauderdale, Florida; and Pastor Lavern Witherspoon of Columbia; four brothers, John Henry Scott of Philadelphia, Pennsylvania; Joe James Scott of Augusta, Georgia; Robert Vincent Scott of Heidelburg, Germany; two sisters, Rachel Walker of Ridge Crest, California; the Rev. Marianna Jones of Baltimore, Maryland; and a host of grandchildren and great-grandchildren.
SHERWOOD McCREA -- Funeral services for Sherwood Jerome "Bunkey" McCrea, conducted by the Rev. James Hawthorne, were held Mon., March 1, 2004, at Greater Bethel A.M.E. Church in Kingstree. Burial, directed by Dimery and Rogers Funeral Home, followed at Greenlawn Cemetery. Mr. McCrea, 43, died Wed., Feb. 25, 2004, at his residence in Charlotte, North Carolina. He was the son of Mrs. Alberta McCrea Chamblee and Ben Matthews. He was educated in the public schools of Shreveport, Louisiana. He was a member of First Mt. Calvary Baptist Church. Survivors are: his parents, Earl Chamblee and Alberta McCrea Chamblee of Charlotte, North Carolina; five sisters, Velma McCrea of Atlanta, Georgia; Caprina Chamblee and Quynetra Chamblee, both of Charlotte, North Carolina; Christina Matthews and Andrea Matthews, both of Boston, Massachusetts; five brothers, Keith McCrea and Jamel Chamblee, both of Charlotte, North Carolina; Everett McCrea of Phoenix, Arizona; Azad D. Azeez of Bouie Creek, North Carolina; and Benjamin Matthews, Jr., of Boston, North Carolina; and his grandfather, General Chamblee of Harrellsville, North Carolina.
ROLAND SCOTT -- Funeral services for Roland James Scott, conducted by the Bishop Odell Fulton and Elder Jackie Fulton, were held Sat., Feb. 21, 2004, at Sandridge Holiness Church in Kingstree. Burial, directed by Henryhand Funeral Home, followed at Kingstree Cemetery. Mr. Scott, son of the late Roland Scott and Rebecca Sylvia Scott, was born on July 10, 1934, in Williamsburg County. He died Wed., Feb. 18, 2004, at his residence. He was educated in the public schools of Williamsburg County. Mr. Scott worked for many years in construction for Swain Construction Company and later Dean Weaver Construction. After retirement, he returned to work part-time for Gray's Used Parts. He was a member of Scott Holy Temple in the Sandridge Community of Kingstree. Survivors are: his wife, Geraldine P. Scott of Kingstree; two daughters, Carolyn P. Scott and Dorrinda A. Scott, both of Myrtle Beach; seven sons, Abraham Lincoln Scott, James L. Scott and Herman B. Scott, all of Kingstree; Charles T. Scott of Hinesville, Georgia; Oliver L. Scott, Lethone Scott and Terrance O. Scott, all of Myrtle Beach; three brothers, Thomas Scott and Nathaniel O. Scott, both of Kingstree; and Nathaniel Scott of Morristown, Pennsylvania; two sisters, Lucille P. Scott and Gladys Anderson, both of Kingstree; and 13 grandchildren.
HARRIETT McCOLLOUGH -- Funeral services for Mrs. Harriett G. "Nanny" McCollough, conducted by the Rev. Errol E. Hunt, were held Wed., Feb. 18, 2004, at Memorial A.M.E. Zion Church in Rochester, New York. Burial, directed by Joseph E. Hall Funeral Home, Inc., followed at Falls Cemetery in Greece, New York. Mrs. McCollough died Thurs., Feb. 12, 2004. She was born Jan. 3, 1932 in Kingstree, a daughter of the late Ishmael and Mary Graham. She graduated from Tomlinson High School in 1950. After high school, she began nursesą training at the Benevolence Society Hospital in Kingstree. She was a member of Memorial A.M.E. Zion Church, where she was a member of the Deaconess Board, Home Mission Society, Harriett Tubman Society, Do Something About It Club and sang in the Troubadours, Adult Choir, Thompson Singers and the Ruby Taylor Singers. Mrs. McCollough worked for several health institutions in Rochester, Strong Hospital, The State Hospital and finally retiring from Blossom Nursing Home with 30 plus years of service. Survivors are: three children, Anthony and Sharon of Rochester, New York; and Andrye of Grand Rapids, Michigan; two brothers, Tyrone Graham and J.P. Graham of Kingstree; three sisters, Ruby J. Jones of Rochester, New York; Eliza Johnson, and Pasty McClary of Kingstree; an adopted daughter, Emma Lee Curry of Rochester, New York, and six grandchildren. Pall bearers were Monroe Alston, William T. Alston, James Wallace, Kenneth Gourdine, Michael Lockett, Daryl McClary, Roland Johnson and Joseph Fulmore.
CHERRIE TYNER -- Cherrie James Tyner, 60, died Sun., Feb. 29, 2004, at her residence. Memorials services, conducted by the Rev. Gary B. Adams, were held Tues., March 2, 2004, at the Georgetown Chapel of Mayer Funeral Home. Mrs. Tyner was born in Hartsville, March 29, 1943, a daughter of the late Henry and Maude James of Hartsville. She was a 1965 graduate of Winthrop College. Mrs. Tyner received a master of education from the University of South Carolina. She was retired from the Georgetown County School System, where she shared her love of music for 30 years. Survivors are: her husband, Jack Tyner of Georgetown; two sons, Jason Tyner of Georgetown; and Bruce Tyner of New Orleans, Louisiana; one sister, Ruth Adams of Kingstree; and one brother, John Ronald James of Hartsville. Memorials may be made to Winthrop Foundation, Friends of the Conservatory, 118 Tillman Hall, Rock Hill, South Carolina 29733.
CELESTE HODGES -- Funeral services for Celeste Patterson Hodges were held Mon., March 1, 2004, at the graveside in St. Stephen Episcopal Churchyard in St. Stephen, directed by J. Henry Stuhr, Inc., Downtown Chapel. Mrs. Hodges, widow of the late William Henry Hodges, Jr., died Thurs., Feb. 26, 2004, in Mt. Pleasant. She was born May 1, 1906, in Walterboro, the daughter of the late Harrie Peaples Patterson and Mary Eliza Black Patterson. She was a graduate of Columbia College and a member of St. Stephen Episcopal Church. Mrs. Hodges was the chairman of Family and Children Services in the Williamsburg County Welfare Department. Mrs. Hodges lived in Kingstree for approximately 75 years. She was very active in and interested in the research of genealogy and preservation of historical artifacts. She was a member of the following organizations: The National Society of Daughters of the American Colonists, National Society of United States Daughters of 1812, Margaret Gregg Gordon Chapter of the Daughters of the American Revolution, The National Society of Daughters of the Colonial Wars, National Society of Americans of Royal Descent, The Preservation Society of Charleston, National Society of Magna Charter Dames, First Families of South Carolina, South Carolina Dames of the Court of Arms, and The South Carolina Historical Society. Survivors are; one daughter, Mary Alma Crosland; two grandchildren; and one great-grandson. In lieu of flowers memorials may be made to The South Carolina Historical Society, 100 Meeting Street, Charleston, South Carolina 29401 or The Preservation Society of Charleston, 147 King Street, Charleston, South Carolina 29401.
NEMIAH NESMITH, JR. -- Funeral services for Nemiah Nesmith, Jr., conducted by the Rev. Jackie Boyd, were held Fri., March 5, 2004, at St. Paul United Methodist Church in Kingstree. Burial, directed by Dimery and Rogers Funeral Home, followed at St. Mark A.M.E. Church Cemetery. Mr. Nesmith, 65, died Fri., Feb. 27, 2004, at Home Regional Hospital in Melbourne, Florida. He was born March 2, 1938, a son of Bernetha Nesmith and the late Nemiah Nesmith, Sr. He attended the public schools of Williamsburg County. He was employed by the United States Postal Service as a utility worker for several years. He was a member of St. Mark A.M.E. Church. Survivors, in addition to his mother, are: his wife, Mrs. Letha Nesmith; five sons, Roosevelt Nesmith and Oliver Nesmith, both of Salters; Willie Nesmith and Sonny Nesmith, both of Melbourne, Florida; and James Edward Nesmith of Palm Beach, Florida; four daughters, Mrs. Helen Davis of Melbourne, Florida; Mrs. Bridgette Harper of Orlando, Florida; Evelyn Green and Wendolyn Carter, both of Salters; four brothers, Leen Nesmith and Emory Nesmith, both of Trio; Abraham Nesmith of Miami, Florida; and David Nesmith of Greensboro, North Carolina; one sister, Mrs. Carrie Lee Mannet of Queens, New York; 21 grandchildren; and two great-grandchildren.
HATTIE BROCKINGTON -- Funeral services for Mrs. Hattie Paul Brockington, conducted by the Rev. Bernard Paige, were held Thurs., March 4, 2004, at New Friendship Freewill Baptist Church in Kingstree. Burial, directed by Dimery and Rogers Funeral Home, followed at Greenlawn Cemetery. Mrs. Brockington, 88, died Sat., Feb. 21, 2004, at Life Care Center in Yuma, Arizona. She was born August 12, 1915, a daughter of the late Daisy Peterson and Walter Paul. She attended the public schools of Williamsburg County. She was a member of New Friendship Freewill Baptist Church. Survivors are: one son, Anthony "Tony" Brockington of Yuma, Arizona; five grandchildren; and seven great-grandchildren.
