Posted By: GenealogyBuff.com RICHARD PRESSLEY -- Funeral services for Richard Pressley, conducted by Rev. B.L. Green, were held Sat., Aug. 7, 2004, at St. John A.M.E. Church in Kingstree. Burial, directed by Redmond-Richardson Funeral Home, followed at the churchyard cemetery. Mr. Pressley, 54, died Mon., Aug. 2, 2004, at the Medical University of South Carolina in Charleston. He was born Aug. 30, 1949, a son of the late James Pressley and Lula Mae Evans Pressley in Williamsburg County. He received his formal education in the public schools of Williamsburg County. He was a member of St. John A.M.E. Church. He was formerly employed as a water meter reader for the Town of Kingstree-Water Department. He once worked for R. H. Moore Construction and T.S. Ragsdale. Survivors are: three daughters, Bertha Higgins, Cornelia Pressley and Marilyn Page, all of Kingstree; three sons, Leroy Wilson of New Zion; Eldridge 'Spencer' Cun-ningham and Antonio McKnight, both of Kingstree; three sisters, Ruth E. Pressley of New Zion; Rachel McFadden of Salters; and Mrs. Ethel Echols of New Zion; one brother, Bobby Pressley of Rochester, New York; and 11 grandchildren.
KARL SMITH, SR. -- Karl G. "K.G." Smith, Sr., 78, formerly of Lake City, died Fri., Aug. 6, 2004, at his residence. Graveside funeral services were held Mon., Aug. 9, 2004, at the Lake City Memorial Park. Mr. Smith was born in Florence County, a son of the late Karl Eugene and Ruth Wilson Smith. He graduated from the University of South Carolina were he was president of Pi Kappa Phi. Mr. Smith was former owner of K.G. Smith & Company of Lake City. He served on Florence County Council from 1975-1977. Mr. Smith also served as a member of the board of the Pee Dee Regional Council of Governments. He then became director of the U.S. Farmers Home Administration for South Carolina under the President Jimmy Carter Admin-istration. He was elected Florence County Treasurer in 1982 and served until his retirement in 1998. He was a member of the Lake City First Baptist Church and attended Belin United Methodist Church in Murrells Inlet and the Garden City Chapel. Mr. Smith served in the U.S. Army during World War II. He was married to the late Alice Dickman Smith. Survivors are: four sons, K.G. "Rusty" Smith, Jr., of Lake City; Charles Clifton Smith, Andrew Dickman Smith and Webber Wilson Smith, all of Murrells Inlet; one brother, Charles Smith of Jacksonville, Florida; and 10 grandchildren. Memorials may be made to American Diabetes Association, 2711 Middleburg Drive, Ste. 205, Columbia, S.C. 29204.
BILLY RUFUS -- Rev. Billy E. Rufus, 70, died Wed., Aug. 11, 2004, at Roper Hospital in Charleston. Funeral services, conducted by Rev. Paul Miles, were held Sun., Aug. 15, 2004, at Andrews Presbyterian Church. Burial, directed by Andrews Chapel of Mayer Funeral Home, followed at Andrews Memorial Cemetery. Rev. Rufus was born in Witt, Illinois, on Jan. 8, 1934, a son of the late William Dennison Rufus and Imogene Hutchins Rufus. He grew up in Witt and attended the schools there. Rev. Rufus served in the Navy during the Korean Conflict. He was a graduate of Belhaven College in Jackson, Mississippi, and Columbia Theological Seminary in Decatur, Georgia. He was the pastor of Andrews Presbyterian Church and had served there for over 34 years. He was a former pastor at Central Presbyterian Church near Kingstree and New Covenant Presbyterian Church in Manning. Rev. Rufus loved and recorded country music. Survivors are: his wife, Betty McGuire Rufus of Andrews; two sons, Thomas D. Rufus and Michael D. Rufus, both of Andrews; one daughter, Vicky R. Moree of Andrews; one brother, Ronald R. Rufus of Witt, Illinois; seven sisters, Ramona Corbin, Beverly Brizele, Sylvia Rufus, Connie Crowder and Amber Laurenzana, all of Springfield, Illinois, Betty Willa of St. Louis, Missouri; and Shirley Toby of Traveleršs Rest; and five grandchildren.
QUEENIE THOMAS -- Queenie Faye Casselman Thomas, 51, died Wed., Aug. 11, 2004, at the Medical University of South Carolina in Charleston. Funeral services, conducted by Rev. Murray W. Powell, were held Fri., Aug. 13, 2004, at the graveside at Piney Forest Cemetery. Andrews Chapel of Mayer Funeral Home was in charge of arrangements. Mrs. Thomas was born in Andrews on March 6, 1953, a daughter of Willow Cox Casselman and the late DeLeon Franklyn Casselman. She grew in Andrews and was of the Baptist faith. Survivors, in addition to her mother of Andrews, are: her former husband, Joseph Leroy Thomas of Andrews; three sons, Gordon Miller, Edwin Miller and Andy Miller, all of Pleasant Hill; five brothers, William C. Casselman, Eddie L. Casselman, Thomas Vernon Casselman, Raymond L. Casselman and Leon Franklin Casselman, all of Andrews; and one grandchild.
EMANUEL MONTGOMERY -- Funeral services for Emanuel "Bubba" Montgomery, conducted by Rev. Stanley McCray, were held Sat., Aug. 14, 2004, at North Kingstree Baptist Church in Kingstree. Burial, directed by Redmond-Richardson Funeral Home, followed at McGill Cemetery. Mr. Montgomery, 82, died Tues., Aug. 10, 2004, at Palmetto Richland Memorial Hospital in Columbia. He was born July 30, 1922, in Williamsburg County, a son of the late General Montgomery and Iva Mae Mabry Montgomery. Mr. Montgomery attended and received his formal education in the public schools of Williamsburg County. He was a member of North Kingstree Baptist Church. He served in the United States Army during World War II and earned a honorable discharge after more than two years of service. Survivors are: his wife, Mrs. Mary Elizabeth Fulton Montgomery of Columbia; five sons, Clyde Lee Montgomery and George Montgomery, both of Hayattsville, Maryland; Emanuel Rico Montgomery and Tyrone Holt, both of Columbia; and Levern Fulton of Kingstree; three daughters, Nancy Montgomery of Washington, DC; Jennifer Fulton of Kingstree; and Mrs. Hazel Gadson of Columbia; 15 grandchildren; and 13 great-grandchildren.
DOZIER McCRAY -- Funeral services for Dozier McCray, also known as Abdul H. Abdullah, will be held Sat., Aug. 14, 2004, at the Dimery and Rogers Funeral Home Chapel, conducted by Rev. Levi Dozier, Jr. Burial, directed by Dimery and Rogers Funeral Home, will be held at Jerusalem United Methodist Church Cemetery. Mr. McCray, 62, died Fri., June 11, 2004, in Palmetto Health Baptist Hosptial in Columbia. He was born Nov. 19, 1941, in Salters, a son of the late Alexander and Earlene Dozier McCray. He joined St. Paul Chapel Baptist Church in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. He attended South Philly High School in Philadelphia. He enlisted in the United States Army from 1964 to 1968. He was awarded a Bronze Star and a Purple Heart in the Army. He was employed with the United States Post Office in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, for several years. He moved to Columbia, South Carolina, and lived there until his passing. Survivors are: two daughters, Shirley P. Deloach and Rifqa Maddox, both of Philadelphia, Pennsylvania; one sister, Mrs. Elizabeth McCray Collins of Philadelphia, Pennsylvania; and five brothers, Furman McCray, Sherman McCray, Wayne McCray, Raymond McCray and Mark McCray, all of Philadelphia, Pennsylvania.
CURTIS McFADDEN, SR. -- Funeral services for Curtis "Tater" McFadden, Sr., conducted by Rev. Gabriel, were held Tues., Aug. 17, 2004, at New Jerusalem Missionary Baptist Church in Lake City. Burial, directed by Samuels and Richardson Funeral Home, followed in the Old McFadden Cemetery in Lake City. Mr. McFadden, 57, died Tues., Aug. 10, 2004, at his residence in Lake City. He was born May 9, 1947, in Scranton, a son of Mrs. Martha Johnson McFadden and the late Ollie McFadden. He attended the public schools of Florence County. He was a member of New Jerusalem Missionary Baptist Church and was employed for a number of years at Prestress in Lake City. Survivors are: his wife, Mrs. Geneva B. McFadden of Lake City; three sons, Curtis McFadden, Jr., of Timmonsville, Jimmy McFadden of Lake City and Kenneth McFadden of Effingham; five daughters, Mrs. Janice Musters of California, Mrs. Sherry Ann McFadden, Mrs. Gloria Ann McFadden, Mrs. Pamela Denise McFadden and Lasandra Bonita McFadden, all of Lake City; two brothers, Irvin McFadden of New Jersey and Archie McFadden of Hope Sound, Florida; five sisters, Ms. Celesta Robinson of Port St. Lucia, Florida, Brenda Singletary of Stuart, Florida, Mrs. Glenda McClain of Hope Sound, Florida, Mrs. Ollie Mae Johnson and Mrs. Charlotte McClain, both of Port Salerno, Florida; 19 grandchildren, and one great grandchild.
BETTY GADDY -- Funeral services for Mrs. Betty Ramsey Gaddy, conducted by Bishop Roosevelt Fulton, were held Fri., June 11, 2004, at Evangelistic Way of the Cross Church in Kingstree. Burial, directed by Dimery and Rogers Funeral Home, followed at Beulah A.M.E. Church Cemetery. Mrs. Gaddy, 64, died Sat., June 5, 2004, at McLeod Regional Medical Center in Florence. She was born Sept. 3, 1939, a daughter of the late James Ramsey, Sr., and Pearl Burgess Ramsey. She was educated in the public schools of Williamsburg County. She was employed as a housekeeping supervisor with Landmark Resort. She was a member of Evangelistic Temple Way of the Cross Church, where she was a member of the Pastoršs Aide Committee, Gospel Choir and Building Fund Committee. Survivors are: her husband, Edgar Gaddy of Charleston; three daughters, Angenetia Gaddy, Denise Gaddy and Alisa Gaddy Green, all of Kingstree; one step-son, Tommy Gaddy of Highland, California; four sisters, Mrs. Lillie Mae Crabb of Pottstown, Pennsylvania; Bertha Barr of Phoenixville, Pennsylvania; Sarah Ramsey Dawkins and Mrs. Gloria McGraw, both of Kingstree; two brothers, Abraham Ramsey of Pottstown, Pennsylvania; and Solomon Ramsey of Kingstree; and 12 grandchildren.
HERMAN DAIS -- Funeral services for Herman Dais, conducted by Rev. Joseph Corbin, were held Thurs., June 10, 2004, at St. Mary A.M.E. Church in Salters. Burial, directed by Dimery and Rogers Funeral Home, followed at St. Mary A.M.E. Church Cemetery. Mr. Dais, 48, died Sat., June 5, 2004, at Williamsburg Regional Hospital in Kingstree. He was born Oct. 14, 1955, a son of Rev. Jack Dais and the late Mrs. Margaret McCrea Dais. He was educated in the public schools of Williamsburg County. He was self-employed as a carpenter. He was a member of St. Mary A.M.E. Church. Survivors, in addition to his father of Salters, are: one daughter, Mrs. Quan Dais of Hawaii; five brothers, Mose Edward Dais of Turbeville; Abraham Dais of Kingstree; Jackie Dais of Salters; Curtis Fluitt of Charlotte, North Carolina; Al Scott of Raleigh, North Carolina; and five sisters, Mrs. Lola Mae Smith of Baltimore, Maryland; Margie Dais Lee of Salters; Mrs. Christine Swinton of Salters; Mrs. Nancy Mae Choice of Washington, D.C.; and Mrs. Reatha Cooper of Lake City.
EMILY HARRIS -- Emily Ivey Harris, 78, wife of the late William Edgar Harris, died Sat., June 5, 2004, at her residence. Funeral services were held Thurs., June 10, 2004, at the Chapel of Morris Funeral Home in Hemingway. Burial, directed by Morris Funeral Home, followed at Union Methodist Church. Mrs. Harris was born in Hemingway, a daughter of the late Willie Ander and Minnie Elizabeth Britton Ivey. She attended Hemingway schools and was a nursing aid at Kingstree Hospital. Mrs. Harris was a member of Union Methodist Church. Survivors are: two sons, William David Harris of Macon, Georgia; and Ander L. Harris of Surfside Beach; two daughters, Barbara Ann Harris of Tallahassee, Florida; and Betty Jean Maynor of Kingstree; one brother, Wilbur Ivey of Hemingway; three sisters, Libby Zolman of Warsaw, Indiana; Wilhemena Leach of Hartsville; and Frances Player of Lake City; seven grandchildren; and six great-grandchildren. Memorials may be made to the American Cancer Society, 950 48th Ave. N., Myrtle Beach, S.C. 29577.
