Posted By: GenealogyBuff.com FLETCHER ARCHIE, JR. -- Funeral services for Fletcher Archie, Jr., conducted by Rev. James Abrams, were held Wed., July 7, 2004, at St. James Baptist Church in Hopkins. Burial, directed by McClary Funeral Home, followed at St. James Baptist Church Cemetery. Mr. Archie died Fri., July 2, 2004, at Palmetto Baptist Medical Center in Columbia. He was born December 26, 1952, in Hopkins, the son of the late Fletcher Archie, Sr., and Mrs. Mary Howell Taylor. He attended the public schools of Richland County. He was a former truck driver. Survivors are: his wife, Mrs. Patricia Archie of Hopkins; two sons, Fletcher Archie and Kendrick Archie, both of Hopkins; three daughters, Kartika Archie and Mattilyn Archie, both of Hopkins, and Falonda Archie of Columbia; two sisters; Mary Archie and Brenda Archie, both of Columbia; and three brothers, Willie Archie, Leroy Archie and Raymond Archie, all of Columbia.
L.D. COOK -- Luke Dupree "L.D." Cook, 93, husband of the late Ollie Ray Cook, died Wed., July 7, 2004, in a Florence hospital. Graveside funeral services, directed by Brockington Funeral Home, were held Sat., July 10, 2004, in the Cook Cemetery. Mr. Cook was born in Lake City, a son of the late Robert J. and Juanita Feagin Cook. He retired from AVCO Lycoming in Charleston and was a member of Pergamos United Methodist Church. He was a Mason. Survivors are: one sister, Mary Alice McCaslin of Arnold, Maryland, and a number of nieces and nephews.
LOIS GOUDE -- Lois L. Goude, 70, died Wed., July 7, 2004, in a Florence hospital. Funeral services were held Sat., July 10, 2004, at Brockington Funeral Home Chapel. Burial, directed by Brockington Funeral Home, followed at Lake City Memorial Park. Miss Goude was born in Florence, a daughter of the late L. E. and Della P. Goude. She was a member of Lake City Church of God. Survivors are: seven sisters, Ila Turner and Edna Sanders, both of Lake City; Elma Parrott of Florence; Lila Hanley of Greenwood; Hazel Moline of Ninety Six; Mazel McCall of Kingstree; and Daisy Pope of Hemingway; three brothers, Wilbur Campbell and James L. Goude of Lake City; and J. W. Goude of Greenwood.
JUANITA EPPS -- Mrs. Juanita Price Epps, 91, widow of Eugene (Mack) Epps, died Tues., July 6, 2004, at her residence. Funeral services, conducted by Rev. Dr. Rodney Foster, were held Thurs., July 8, 2004, at Midway Presbyterian Church. Burial, directed by Williamsburg Funeral Home, followed in the churchyard cemetery. Mrs. Epps was born December 8, 1912, in Williamsburg County, a daughter of the late Jessie Marvin and Sarah Ann McKenzie Price. She was a member of the Midway Presbyterian Church for 56 years and was a Sunday school teacher for many years. She retired after 46 years as a Luzier cosmetic consultant. Survivors are: two daughters, Evelyn Epps Hough of the home, and Frankie Epps Black of Pickins; one sister, Margaret Camp of New Jersey; three granddaughters and two great-grandchildren. Memorials may be made to Tuomey Regional Hospice, 232 W. Calhoun St., Sumter, S.C., or Midway Presbyterian Church, 12189 Black River Road, New Zion, S.C.
LORIN TYLER -- George Lorin Tyler, 74, husband of Ruby James Tyler, died Fri., July 2, 2004, in a Charleston hospital. Funeral services were held Sun., July 4, 2004, at Kingstree First Baptist Church. Burial, directed by Williamsburg Funeral Home, followed at the Cedar Grove Baptist Church Cemetery. Mr. Tyler was born in Kingstree, a son of James Milton and Gertrude Nesmith Tyler. He attended Kingstree schools and was assistant manager for Belk Department Store in Kingstree for 39 years. He served in the Army during the Korean War and was a member of Kingstree First Baptist Church. Survivors, in addition to his wife of Kingstree, are: one son, Al Tyler; one daughter, Diane Tyler Baylor; two brothers, Linwood Tyler and Harry Tyler, both of Kingstree; and six grandchildren.
DEXTER MATTHEWS -- Dexter L. Matthews, 70, husband of Justine McCutchen Matthews, died Thurs., July 1, 2004, in a Florence hospital. Funeral services were held Sat., July 3, 2004, at the graveside in the Kingstree Second Baptist Church Cemetery. Williamsburg Funeral Home assisted the family. Mr. Matthews was born in Florence County, a son of Susan Barfield Matthews and Dan Matthews. He attended Florence County schools. Mr. Matthews was the parts manager at East Side Motors in Kingstree for many years, and later worked at Colonial Rubber. He was an Air Force veteran of the Korean War, and a member of Kingstree Second Baptist Church. Survivors, in addition to his wife of Kingstree, are: three sons, Justin Matthews, Jamie Matthews and Timmy Matthews, all of Kingstree; and one sister, Judy Barnes of Charlotte, North Carolina.
BURNETT M. BATTISTE -- Graveside services for Burnett M. Battiste, 65, were held Tues., May 25, 2004, in the Eastlawn Memorial Park Cemetery in California. Andrew and Greilich Mortuary was in charge. Leevy's Funeral Home of Columbia was in charge of local arrangements. Mr. Battiste died Thur., May 20, 2004. A resident of Sacramento, California for 43 years, he was the son of the late Luther J. and Geraldine G. Battiste, formerly of Kingstree. He was known as "Mr. B" throughout Sacramento for his "Mr. B's Formal Wear." He received his education at Boys Town Nebraska; graduated from Pine Forge Institute Pottstown, Pennsylvania; and earned his degree in business administration form New York City College. His community, state and national affiliations included the following: Leukemia Society of America, United Cerebral Palsy Association, Small Business Association Council, San Francisco Department of Education, St. Rose Paris Council, Washington Park Strike Force, U.S. Department of Agriculture, Chairman East Lawn Memorial Board, Black Business and Professional Advisory Council Chief, Executive Officer Walk on Youth of American, National Night Out, president of Black Business Men's Association, Sacramento Project Coordinator Night Out Association, U.S. Bureau of Investigations Under Cover Special Agent, Saints & Sinners of Sacramento Honorable Mummers Society of Sacramento, Television Program Developer, "Which Way," "Prevention of Abuse Among Youth" Sacramento Police Department Program Community Forum, Community Garden Project Developer, Founder and Developer Wagon Train Productions, U.C. Davis Health Board, U.S. Presidential and Congressional Awards of Service, California Governoršs Awards, letters of recognition and appreciation. Survivors are: his wife, Martha B. Battiste; his children, Bernard, Marianna and Deidre; two sisters, Nancy of San Antonia, Texas; and Mildred of New Orleans, Louisiana; six brothers, Alphonzo of Atlanta, Georgia; Theodore of New Rochelle, New York; Jack and John, both of New Orleans, Louisiana; Auggeretto of Chicago, Illinois; and Keith of Orangeburg; and six grandchildren. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to The Leukemia Society of America.
ODELL CUNNINGHAM -- Funeral services for Mrs. Odell Singletary Cunningham, conducted by Elder Linwood Cooper, were held Fri., May 28, 2004, at Believers Holiness Conference Center in Coward. Burial, directed by Dimery and Rogers Funeral Home, followed at Greenlawn Cemetery. Mrs. Cunningham, 75, died Mon., May 24, 2004. She was born May 28, 1928, in Kingstree, a daughter of the late Mervin Singletary and Eva Brown Singletary. She was formerly employed by Williamsburg County Memorial Hospital and Clemson Extension, and she retired from the Department of Social Services. While working at Clemson Extension, she taught arts and crafts and horticulture. She was a member of the Clemson Extension Garden Club and frequently won the Garden of Month Award. She also earned certificates in homemaking, health aide and family togetherness at Clemson Extension. She was a member of Trinity Believers Holiness Church and served as Mother of the Church, President of the Usher Board, Church Treasurer and member of the Church Choir. She was also a member of Esther Chapter Order of the Eastern Star No. 265. Survivors are: her husband, Richard "Rich" Cunningham of Kingstree; five sons, Harold Bernard Cunningham of Sumter; Willis Cunningham and Anthony Cummingham, both of Kingstree; Carl Cunningham of Salters; and Levern Cunningham of New Zion; three daughters, Mrs. Willow Bell Thornton of Radcliff, Kentucky; Joyce Cunningham of London, England; and Cindy Charles of Atlanta, Georgia; one brother, Marvin Singletary of Atlanta, Georgia; three sisters, Mrs. Mary Rhodes and Mrs. Elizabeth Lighty, both of Florence; and Mrs. Margaret McGill of Kingstree; 22 grandchildren; and ten great-grandchildren.
CARLYLE ROBINSON -- Major Carlyle Robinson of Kingstree died May 26, 2004. Williamsburg Funeral Home was in charge of services at Kingstree First Assembly of God Church. Interment followed at Sandy Bay Cemetery in Kingstree. Mr. Robinson was born in Clarendon County Feb. 23, 1929, a son of the late Henry and Dorothy Coker Robinson. He attended Clarendon County schools and was retired from Santee Oil Company of Kingstree. He was a member of First Assembly of God Church in Kingstree, where he served many years as a board member. Survivors are: his wife, Willia Dean Miles Robinson of Kingstree; two children, Robert Maurice "Bobby" Robinson and Darlene Robinson Chandler, both of Kingstree; one brother, Sylvester O. Robinson of Darlington; four granddaughters; and two great-granddaughters. Memorials may be made to Southern Care Hospice of Florence or Kingstree First Assembly of God Church.
COLEE LEE -- Mrs. Colee Myrtle Lee, 82, died Tues., May 5, 2004, in Toumey Regional Medical Center. Funeral services were held Fri., May 7, 2004, at the Sumter Free Will Baptist of the Pentecostal Holiness Faith Church in Sumter. Burial, directed by Floyd Funeral Home, followed at Camp Branch Pentecostal Holiness Church Cemetery in Lake City. Born in Williamsburg County, she was a daughter of the late Arthur McElveen and Iva Frye McElveen. She was raised by John and Rebecca Dorrell. Mrs. Lee was a retired state employee and a member of the Sumter Free Will Baptist of the Pentecostal Holiness Faith Church. She was preceded in death by her husbands, Wylie Jordan and Talbert Lee. Survivors are: three daughters, Frances Eaddy of Kingstree; Mary Williams of Sumter; and Martha Morris of Dalzell; three sons, John Jordan and Billy Jordan, both of Charleston; and Jimmy Jordon of Olanta; one sister, Louise Floyd of Lake City; five brothers, Wiley McElveen of Turbeville; James McElveen, Rev. Jack McElveen, Jerry McElveen and Gordon McElveen, all of New Zion; 15 grandchildren; and 20 great-grandchildren. Memorials may be made to The Sumter Free Will Baptist of the Pentecostal Holiness Faith Church in Sumter.
