Posted By: GenealogyBuff.com SHAW -- Funeral services for Mrs. Essie Lee Matthews Shaw were held Thursday, February 5, 1998, at Mt. Zion United Methodist Church in Kingstree, conducted by Rev. Willie Wilson and Rev. Willie Bryant. Burial followed at Kingstree Cemetery directed by Dimery and Rogers Funeral Home. Mrs. Shaw, 75, died January 31, 1998, at Vencour Hospital in Greensboro, N.C. She was born December 10, 1922, in Williamsburg County, a daughter of the late Henry Matthew and Mable Mouldrow Matthews. She attended Williamsburg County Training School and did her undergraduate studies at Morris College in Sumter, Temple University in Philadelphia, PA. and received her masters degree from North Carolina A&T University in Greensboro, N.C. She was employed in the public schools of Williamsburg County for 37 years. She taught at Shaw Corner School and Anderson Elementary School. She was a member of Esther Chapter O.E.S. #265 and also a member of Zeta Phi Beta Sorority, where she was awarded Zeta Phi Beta Zeta of the year in 1987. She has been awarded Teacher of the Year, March of Dimes Volunteer Award and Mary B. Thomas Girls Circle Award. She was a member of Union Baptist Church where she was a member of the Ushers Board and President of the Missionary Society. Survivors are: her husband, James E. Shaw of the home; one son, Kenneth Shaw of Kingstree; two daughters, Mrs. Alice Jones of Atlanta, Ga. and Mrs. Cynthia Wilson of Kingstree; two brothers, Warren Matthews of Philadelphia, Pa.; and Patrick Matthews of Salters; and two sisters, Mrs. Oda Brooks of Philadelphia, Pa.; and Mrs. Elizabeth Hunter of Kingstree.
HARVIN -- Funeral services for Mrs. Margaret Matthews Harvin were held Saturday, February 7, 1998, at Dimery and Rogers Funeral Home Chapel, conducted by Rev. Amos Matthews. Burial followed in Cowhead Cemetery in Greeleyville directed by Dimery and Rogers Funeral Home. Mrs. Harvin, 79, died Sunday, February 1, 1998, at her residence in Kingstree. She was born September 8, 1918, in Williamsburg County, a daughter of the late Jacob Matthews and Hester Miller Matthews. She was employed as a laundry room attendant in the textile industry. She was a member of Mt. Zion A.M.E. Church. Survivors are: one daughter, Mrs. Martha Matthews Ayers of Hampton, Va.; and three sisters, Mrs. Carrie Wilson of Kingstree; Mrs. Elouise Parson and Mrs. Rose Walker of Jacksonville, Fla.
REDDEN -- Funeral services for Davis Redden, Sr. were held Monday, February 9, 1998, at Beulah African Methodist Episcopal Church in Kingstree, conducted by Rev. Larry Stevens. Burial followed at the churchyard cemetery directed by Redmond-Richardson Funeral Home. Mr. Redden, 70, died Thursday, February 5, 1998, in Kingstree. He was born January 28, 1928, in Williamsburg County, the son of the late John Peter Redden and Lillie Smith Redden. He was a member of Beulah African Methodist Episcopal Church where he served on the Steward Board and was class leader. He was a former member of the choir and trustee. He was a member of Pride of Rosehill Masonic Lodge. He was a farmer and was a former employee of Drexel-Heritage of Kingstree. Survivors are: three sons, Davis Redden, Jr. of Columbia; Herbert Redden and Larry Redden, both of Kingstree; five daughters, Patricia Cooper, Cynthia Redden, Tamera Burgess Redden, all of Kingstree; Diane Redden of Columbia; and Vickie Redden of Florence; a grandson he reared as his own, Shawn Redden of Columbia; five brothers, Morris Redden of Kingstree; Charlie Redden of Columbia; Frank Redden, James Redden and Stanley Redden, all of Philadelphia, Pa.; one sister, Ophelia Redden Hyman of Olanta; and his step-mother, Flora Redden of Kingstree.
BYRD -- Edward Dewey Byrd, Jr., 66, died Saturday, February 7, 1998, at his residence. Graveside funeral services were held Monday, February 9, 1998, in Midway Presbyterian Church Cemetery in Anderson directed by Williamsburg Funeral Home. Mr. Byrd was born in Kingstree, a son of the late Edward D. Byrd, Sr. and Evelyn Hughey Byrd. He was a graduate of Kingstree High School and Clemson University. He served in the U.S. Army and retired after 30 years from Exxon Co., USA. He was a Baptist. Survivors are: three daughters, Katherine Byrd of Charleston; Julia B. Jones of Orlando, Fla.; and Margaret B. Marks of Woodstock, Ga.; one son, Edward D. Bryd, III, of Greenville, N.C.; and two sisters, Mrs. Betty B. Fant of Anderson; and Mrs. Emily B. Harris of Athens, Ga.
HAGWOOD -- Mrs. Orilla Kennedy Hagwood, 61, died Monday, February 9, 1998, at her residence. Funeral services were held Wednesday, Feb. 11, 1998, in the Williamsburg Funeral Home Chapel. Burial followed in the Broad Swamp Community Cemetery directed by Williamsburg Funeral Home. Mrs. Hagwood was born in Olanta, a daughter of the late Allie Floyd and Albert Kennedy. She was employed by Farmers Telephone Cooperative for 24 years as a service representative. She was a member of Broad Swamp Pentecostal Holiness Church. Survivors are: her husband, Charlie H. Hagwood; one daughter, Sandi Altman of Kingstree; and two sons, Herman Hagwood and Al Hagwood, both of Kingstree.
PARKER -- Bryan Shaphan Parker, 80, died Wednesday, February 11, 1998, in Grand Stand Regional Medical Center, Myrtle Beach, S.C. Funeral services were held Saturday, February 14, 1998, at Sharon Baptist Church. Burial followed in Edge Cemetery directed by Goldfinch Funeral Home, Conway Chapel. Mr. Parker was born in Horry County, a son of Thaddeous Bright and Florrie Edge Parker. He was a retired farmer and construction worker. Survivors are: two brothers, Daniel B. Parker and Jack K. Parker, both of Longs; and three sisters, Sarah Lee Thompson of Kingstree; Eva Dale Morton of Longs and Havalia Mason of North Charleston.
CYRUS -- Funeral services for Mrs. Geraldine "Lillian" Cunningham Cyrus were held Sunday, February 15, 1998, at Siloam Baptist Church in Kingstree, conducted by Rev. Francis Burrows. Burial followed in Greenlawn Cemetery directed by Redmond-Richardson Funeral Home. Mrs. Cyrus, 52, died Wednesday, February 11, 1998, at Lexington Medical Center in West Columbia. She was born October 11, 1945, in Williamsburg County, the son of the late David Green Cunningham and Jannie Mae Wilson Cunningham. She graduated from Tomlinson High School in Kingstree and Area Trade Technical College in Denmark. She was a member of Siloam Baptist Church. After returning to Kingstree, she was a dedicated volunteer worker at Waccamaw Mental Health Center. She was also employed at Super 10 Discount Store. Survivors are: her husband, Eddie Cyrus, Sr. of Philadelphia, Pa.; one son, Eddie Cyrus, Jr. of the home; four sisters, Mrs. Alfreda Kennedy, Mrs. Francenia Burroughs and Mrs. Juanita Cunningham Bradley, all of Kingstree; and Kathy Cunningham of Springfield, Va.; and one brother, Harold Pope of Kingstree.
TIMMONS -- Edward Carlile Timmons, 64, died Saturday, February 14, 1998, in a Kingstree hospital. Funeral services were held Tuesday, February 17, 1998, in the Williamsburg Funeral Home Chapel. Burial followed at Parrott Cemetery directed by Williamsburg Funeral Home. Mr. Timmons was born in Williamsburg County, a son of the late Willie and Lizzie Avant Timmons. He was a graduate of Kingstree High School, and a former Williamsburg County Deputy Sheriff. He was the owner of Timmons Produce and a farmer. He was a Baptist. Survivors are: his wife, Mrs. Sarah Timmons of Greeleyville; three sons, Edward Timmons of Greeleyville; Johnny Timmons of Garden City; and Jacob Timmons of Nashville, TN; and one daughter, Elizabeth Timmons of Florence.
BROWN -- Jason Horace Brown, 24, died Sunday, February 15, 1998, following an automobile accident in Florence County. Funeral services were held Tuesday, February 17, 1998, at Happy Home Free Will Baptist Church, conducted by Rev. Earl Bittle and Rev. Roger D. Walls. Burial followed in Andrews Memorial Cemetery directed by Andrews Chapel of Mayer Funeral Home. Mr. Brown was born in Georgetown on February 11, 1974, the son of Felder M. Brown, Jr. and Judy Casselman Brown. He grew up in Andrews and attended Andrews High School. Mr. Brown was an employee of Andrews Metal Works. He was member of Piney Forest Baptist Church and John's Lake Hunting Club. Survivors, in addition to his parents of Andrews, are: his wife, Nancy Ethridge Brown of Andrews; one sister, Penny Brown Cooper of Andrews; his maternal grandmother, Millie Herring Casselman of Andrews; and his paternal grandmother, Ethel Shepler Brown of Kingstree.
NELSON -- Funeral services for Mrs. Inez "Pinkey" Nelson were held Monday, February 9, 1998, at Antioch Baptist Church in Lane. Burial followed at Marion Memorial Garden Cemetery directed by Dimery and Rogers Funeral Home. Mrs. Nelson died Thursday, February 5, 1998, at Clarendon County Memorial Hospital. She was born February 3, 1914, the daughter of the late Joe McElveen and Carrie Holmes McElveen. She was a member of Antioch Baptist Church, where she sang on the Senior Choir and was a member of the Missionary Board. She was also a member of Liberty Works Chapter No. 171 Order of the Eastern Star. Survivors are: three daughters, Mrs. Carrie McClary, Mrs. Daisy Pasley and Wendell Carolina, all of Lane; two sisters, Mrs. Pearline Gerald of Tabor City, N.C. and Mrs. Etta Miller of Lake City; and one brother, Thomas McElveen of Charleston.
