Posted By: GenealogyBuff.com SOPHIA REDDEN -- Funeral services for Mrs. Sophia Brown Redden, conducted by Rev. Brian Williams, were held Mon., Nov. 29, 2004, at Beulah A.M.E. Church in Kingstree. Burial, directed by Redmond-Richardson Funeral Home, followed at the churchyard cemetery. Mrs. Redden, 84, died Thurs., Nov. 25, 2004, at her residence in New Zion. She was born July 6, 1920, in Bennettsville, a daughter of the late Jimmy Crosland and Lila Brown Crosland Cox. She received her formal education in the public schools of Williamsburg County and graduated from Tomlinson High School. She received her nurse's training from F.E. Dubois Training School in Manning and did further studies at Sumter Technical College in Sumter. She was a member of Beulah A.M.E. Church, where she was the church secretary, a stewardess, a missionary and sang in the choir. She was a member of Esther Chapter No. 265, Order of the Eastern Star. She was married to the late Junious Redden. Survivors are: one son, Charlie Redden of New Zion; four daughters, Deloris Walker of Mayesville, Mrs. Betty Hines and Gwendolyn Rush, both of Kingstree, and Mrs. Lila Hammett of Gable; one sister, Mrs. Nell Kenley of Bennettsville; her step-mother-in-law, Mrs. Bertha Redden of Manning; 14 grandchildren; and 18 great-grandchildren.
JOHNNY MILES -- Johnny L. Miles, 56, husband of Linda Jones Miles, died Sat., Nov. 27, 2004, in a Florence hospital. Funeral service were held Mon., Nov. 29, 2004, in Brockington Funeral Home Chapel. Burial, directed by Brockington Funeral Home, followed at Piney Grove Cemetery. Mr. Miles was born in Williamsburg County, a son of the late Lamar B. and Ruth Parker Miles. He was a retired exterminator with Smiley's Termite & Pest Control of Lake City. He and his wife shared their home with 75 foster children. Survivors are: his wife, Linda Jones Miles of Coward; three sons, Officer James Kelly, Jr., of Olanta, Officer Michael Jason Williams of Newton Grove, North Carolina, and John Fann of Coward; one daughter, Dorothy Christine Flowers of Cades; two brothers, Donald "Bud" Miles of Kingstree, and William Miles of Olanta; three sisters, Harriett Coker of Turbeville, Jettie Lee of Kingstree; and Lizzie Springs of Olanta; and 14 grandchildren, including a special grandson, Kenny "Little James" Kelly, who never left his PaPa or NaNa's side.
SANDRA GIBBONS -- Mrs. Sandra Brown Morris Gibbons, 57, died Sun., Nov. 28, 2004, in a Florence hospital. Funeral services were held Tues., Nov. 30, 2004, in the Williamsburg Funeral Home Chapel. Burial, directed by Williamsburg Funeral Home, followed in the Williamsburg Cemetery. Mrs. Gibbons was born Aug. 14, 1947, in Williamsburg County, a daughter of Frankie Hughes Brown McCelvouge and the late Roger M. Brown. She was a graduate of Kingstree High School and was retired from the Exchange Bank of South Carolina. She was a member of Kingstree First Baptist Church. She was preceded in death by a daughter, Susan Morris. Survivors, in addition to her mother of Summerton, are: two sons, Will Morris of Kingstree and Greg Morris of Greeleyville; one brother, Roger Mack Brown, II, of Welcome, North Carolina; and four grandchildren. Memorials made be made to the Multiple Sclerosis Society.
SHIRLEY HARPER -- Mrs. Shirley Tomlinson Harper, 64, wife of the late Harry Harper, died Sun., Oct. 31, 2004, in a Florence hospital. Graveside funeral services, directed by Brockington Funeral Home, were held Wed., Nov. 3, 2004, in Lake City Memorial Park. Mrs. Harper was born in Sumter County, a daughter of the late Elvin B. and Nona Floyd Tomlinson. She was the owner and operator of Tomlinson's Catering and a member of Hebron United Methodist Church. Survivors are: three brothers, Talmadge Tomlinson and Gerald Tomlinson, both of Lake City, and Fred Tomlinson of San Jose, California; and three grandsons. Memorials may be made to Hebron United Methodist Church, 2321 Hebron Road, Cades, S.C. 29518 or to the charity of one's choice.
ISABELLE McKNIGHT -- Funeral services for Mrs. Isabelle McKnight, conducted by Rev. John Gary, were held Wed., Nov. 3, 2004 at Old Mt. Zion A.M.E. Church in Kingstree. Burial, directed by Dimery and Rogers Funeral Home, followed at Kingstree Cemetery. Mrs. McKnight, 89, died Sun., Oct. 31, 2004, at her residence in Kingstree. She was born Nov. 6, 1914, in Williamsburg County, a daughter of the late Bill Singletary and Jannie Singletary. She attended the public schools of Williamsburg County. She was a member of Old Mt. Zion A.M.E. Church in Kingstree. She was married to the late "Buster" Ben McKnight. Survivors are: two sisters, Mrs. Emma Williams of Charleston and Mrs. Lizzie Mae Thompson of Kingstree.
MARY RIGGINS -- Funeral services for Mrs. Mary Lee Cokely Riggins, conducted by Rev. Joseph Ricks, were held Sat., Nov. 6, 2004, at Oak Grove Missionary Baptist Church in Salters. Burial, directed by Redmond-Richardson Funeral Home, followed at Rocky Ford Cemetery in Salters. Mrs. Riggins, 68, died Wed., Nov. 3, 2004, at the Carolinas Hospital System-Florence. She was born Aug. 7, 1936, in Salters, a daughter of the late Herbert Cokely and Agnes Brown Cokely. She received her formal education in the public schools of Williamsburg County. She was a member of Oak Grove Missionary Baptist Church, where she was a member of the choir. She was married to the late Isaac "Boss Man" Riggins. Survivors are: two sons, Jimmy Riggins and Willie James Riggins, both of Salters; two daughters, Verdell Cain and Janie Montgomery, both of Salters; three sisters, Pearlie Starling of Salters, Laura Cokely of Kingstree and Nora Redden of Florence; two brothers, Ardell Cokely of Thomasville, North Carolina, and Lee Cokely of Silas, North Carolina; and 14 grandchildren.
ADAM McKNIGHT -- Funeral services for Adam Matthew McKnight, conducted by Rev. Frank Garrett, were held Sat., Nov. 6, 2004, at Bethesda United Methodist Church in Lake City. Burial, directed by Dimery and Rogers Funeral Home, followed at McKnight Cemetery in Cades. Mr. McKnight, 92, died Mon., Nov. 1, 2004, at Cooke Nursing Facility in Florence. He was born April 21, 1912, in South Carolina, a son of the late Macedonia McKnight and Rosena Brown McKnight. He attended the public schools of Williamsburg County. He was a member of Bethesda United Methodist Church, where he sang in the choir. He was formerly employed by Wellman Industries and the Williamsburg County School District as a bus driver. Survivors are: fours sons, Harry McKnight of Suitland, Maryland, Willie McKnight of Spring Lake, North Carolina, Marshall McKnight of Raleigh, North Carolina, and Alfred McKnight of Colorodo; three daughters, Delma McKnight of Washington, D.C., Mrs. Judy Crawford of Suitland, Maryland, and Brenda McKnight of Lake City; and a host of other relatives.
BENJAMIN TISDALE -- Funeral services for Benjamin Franklin Tisdale, conducted by Rev. Sam Cooper, were held Sat., Nov. 6, 2004, at Jerusalem United Methodist Church in Salters. Burial, directed by Dimery and Rogers Funeral Home, followed in the church cemetery. Mr. Tisdale, 46, died Mon., Nov. 1, 2004, at Tampa General Hospital in Tampa, Florida. He was born Jan. 28, 1958, in Salters, a son of the late Frank Tisdale and Alma McCray Tisdale. He attended the public schools of Williamsburg County and was a graduate of Williamsburg Technical College. In 1984, he moved to Tampa, Florida, where he worked as a roofer. He was a member of Jeru-salem United Methodist Church. Survivors are: two sons, Anthony Conyers of Salters and Corey Evans of Georgetown; five brothers, Sherman Tisdale of St. Petersburg, Florida, David Tisdale and Ivory Tisdale, both of Salters, and Frank Tisdale and Carl Tisdale, both of Conway; six sisters, Mrs. Alma Pompey of Salters, Mrs. Lillian McClary and Mrs. Sarah Washington, both of Buffalo, New York, Mrs. Gloria McGill of Kingstree and Mrs. Betty Tisdale of Conway; and three grandchildren.
H. ALTON BOYD, SR. -- H. Alton Boyd, Sr., 78, died Mon., Oct. 25, 2004, in a Knoxville, Tennessee, hospital. Funeral services were held Thurs., Oct. 28, 2004, in the Kingstree First Baptist Church. Burial, directed by Williamsburg Funeral Home, followed at Kingstree Memorial Gardens. Mr. Boyd was born April 16, 1926, in Williamsburg County, a son of the late Thomas Lee Boyd, Sr., and Bluhma Loryea Boyd. He was a graduate of Andrews schools and was a lifetime farmer. Mr. Boyd was a Mason, a member of the Williamsburg County ASCS committee for 19 years, having served as chairman and vice-chairman, the Williamsburg County Forestry Commission Board, the Kingstree United Methodist Church, and a former member of the Kingstree Lions Club. He was also a member of the VFW and served on the board of the PCA. He served in the U.S. Army during the Korean War. Survivors are: his wife, Mona Rhodes Boyd; two sons, H. Alton Boyd, Jr., and David Lee Boyd of Kingstree; two daughters, Vickie B. Mitchell of Kingstree and Pam L. Boyd of Columbia; three brothers, Loryea L. Boyd of Allendale, T.L. Boyd, Jr., of Salters and Herbert Boyd of Mullins; two sisters, Marguerite B. Taylor of Lake City and Willa Mae Marshall of Columbia; and four grandchildren. Memorials may be made to Kingstree United Methodist Church or Kingstree First Baptist Church.
ANDREW CHANDLER -- Andrew "Andy" Watts Chandler, 14, died Thurs., Nov. 4, 2004, at his residence. Graveside funeral services, conducted by Rev. Paul Bonham, were held Sat., Nov. 6, 2004, at Union United Methodist Church Cemetery. Georgetown Chapel of Mayer Funeral Home was in charge of arrangements. Mr. Chandler was born in July 6, 1990, in Georgetown, a son of Barry Lynn Chandler and Melanie Hemingway Chandler. He was a member of Trinity United Methodist Church in Andrews and was loved by his teachers and therapists. Survivors, in addition to his parents of Georgetown, are: a sister, Muriel Chandler Taylor of Columbia; his maternal grandfather, Edsel Hemingway, Sr., of Georgetown; his paternal grandmother, Bettie Chandler of Hemingway; and his second mother, Geraldine White of Georgetown. Memorials may be made to the Georgetown County Board of Disabilities and Special Needs, P.O.
