Church in Kingstree. Burial, directed by Dimery and Rogers Funeral Home, followed at St. Mark A.M.E. Church Cemetery. Mrs. Dukes, 83, died Sat., Dec. 18, 2004, in Kingstree Nursing Facility. She was born in Williamsburg County on May 21, 1921, a daughter of the late Mose McCollough and Lizzie Turner McCullough. She was married to the late Marvin Dukes. She was a member of St. Mark A.M.E. Church and a member of the Farmers Aide Lodge Survivors are: six sons, Thomas J. Dukes, Rev. Olin Dukes, Slyvester Dukes and Sulester Dukes, all of Kingstree, Joseph Dukes of Lane, and Solomon Dukes of Lawton, Oklahoma; two daughters, Mrs. Roberta Brown of Kingstree and Mrs. Sarah Smith of Greeleyville; 29 grandchildren; and 21 great-grandchildren.
MURRAY ADAMS -- Funeral services for Murray Adams, conducted by Rev. Franklin Fulmore, were held Wed., Dec. 22, 2004, at St. Paul A.M.E. Church in Cades. Burial, directed by Dimery and Rogers Funeral Home, followed at Poston Cemetery. Mr. Adams, 87, died Fri., Dec. 17, 2004, in McLeod Regional Medical Center. He was born May 19, 1917, in Kingstree, a son of the late Bruce Adams and Easter English Adams. He was married to the late Annie Mae Epps Adams. He was a member of St. Paul A.M.E. Church. He was a lifelong farmer. Survivors are: three daughters, Mrs. Luretha Thomas of Kingstree, Mrs. Alberta Mitchell of Brooklyn, New York, and Mrs. Mildred Page of Newark, New Jersey; one sister, Mrs. Ellaree Mouzon of Cades; three stepsisters, seven stepbrothers, 19 grandchildren; 27 great-grandchildren; and three great-great-grandchildren.
HARRY THOMPSON -- Harry Austin Thompson of Charleston died Sat., Dec. 18, 2004. Funeral services for Mr. Thompson were held Tues., Dec. 21, 2004. Burial, directed by J. Henry Stuhr, Inc., West Ashley Chapel, followed at Carolina Memorial Gardens. Mr. Thompson, a retired employee of SCE&G, was born Sept. 14, 1919, in Kingstree, the son of Oscar L. Thompson, Sr., and Mattie Hair Thompson. He was a United States Air Corps World War II veteran. He was with the Falcons 498 Bombardment Squadron United States Army Air Corps in the Pacific. Survivors are: one daughter, Sandy Siegling; one sister, Celeste McDermott; one son, Harry Austin Thompson, Jr., of Austin, Texas; three granddaughters; and three great-grandsons. Memorials may be made to Pinecrest Baptist Church, 1285 Ashley Hall Road, Charleston, South Carolina 29407.
LOUISE GOVAN -- Funeral services for Mrs. Louise Sissie Govan, conducted by Rev. Joseph Cobin, were held Mon., Nov. 29, 2004, at St. Mary A.M.E. Church. Burial, directed by Henry-hand Funeral Home, followed at St. Mary Churchyard Cemetery. Mrs. Govan died Sun., Nov. 21, 2004, at Carolinas Hospital System-Florence. She was born March 20, 1927, in Salters, a daughter of the late John and Nettie Hugee. She was a member of St. Mary A.M.E. Church in Salters. She was educated in the public schools of Williamsburg County. After school she left Williamsburg County, she moved to New Jersey and began her employment working for many years in factory work. She returned to Kingstree and later moved to the Lake City area and was employed in laundry services. While living in Washington, she was employed in domestic work and veterinary caretaking. Survivors are: her children, Annie Bell Nesmith of Salters, Nancy Choice of Washington, D.C., Loretha Cooper of Lake City, Loretta Hedgeman of Washington, D.C., Larry Nesmith of Stuckey, Paul Govan of Lake City, Gloria Grant of Mitchellville, Maryland, and Julia Mae Pringle of Florence; three grandchildren she reared as her own, Steven Grant, Chantee and Jonathan Pringle; one brother, James Brown of Miami, Florida; four sisters, Jannie Bell, Sadie Jenkins and Bessie Lucas of Washington, D.C., and Leatha Mae Higgins of Hyattsville, Maryland; 26 grandchildren; and 31 great-grandchildren.
D.W. RICHARDSON -- Daniel Webster 'D.W.' Richardson, president of Redmond-Richardson Funeral Home, Inc. of Kingstree and Samuels and Richardson Funeral Home of Lake City, died Sun., Feb. 20, 2005, at Carolinas Hospital System-Florence. Funeral services, conducted by Rev. Jerome Wilson and Rev. Joseph D. Ricks, were held Thurs., Feb. 24, 2005, at Greater Bethel A.M.E. Church in Kingstree. Burial, directed by Redmond-Richardson Funeral Home, followed at the National Cemetery in Florence. Mr. Richardson, 60, was born Sept. 22, 1944, in Springlake, North Carolina, a son of Watkins Richardson, Sr., and Ethel Morrison Richardson. He attended the public schools of Philadelphia, Pennsylvania and graduated from Boylan Haven Mather Academy High School in Camden. He also graduated from Allen University in Columbia in 1967. He graduated from the American Academy McAllister Institute of Funeral Service in New York, New York, with a master of science degree in mortuary science. He did further studies at S.C. State University and Clemson University. He was a member of Oak Grove Missionary Baptist Church in Salters. Mr. Richardson was a member of Kappa Alpha Psi Fraternity, Inc., Douglas Masonic Lodge No. 277, Elks Lodge No. 1679, Rotary Club, Mouzon's Club, American Legion and the National and State Funeral Directors and Morticians Association. He was also a member of the Board of Directors of the Exchange Bank of South Carolina. He served in the U.S. Army, played professional football with the Orlando Panthers of the Continental Foot-ball League, coached at Hillcrest Center for Children's Bedford Hills, New York, and was a biology teacher and assistant coach at Roberts High School in Holly Hill. Survivors are: his wife, Myra J. Richardson of the home; a nephew he reared as his own, Keith L. Richardson of Kingstree; three sisters, Betty Duncan, Helen King and Bershel Landsay, all of Philadelphia, Pennsylvania; four brothers, George Richardson of Conway, James Richardson and Larry Richardson, both of Chesapeake, Virginia, and Pittman Richardson of Philadelphia, Pennsylvania.
JOHN CHINA -- Funeral services for John Edward China, conducted by Rev. Albert Rose, were held Sat., Feb. 26, 2005, at St. James Baptist Church in Greeleyville. Burial, directed by Dimery and Rogers Funeral Home, followed in the churchyard cemetery. Mr. China, 64, died Mon., Feb. 21, 2005, at his home in Greeleyville. He was born Aug. 9, 1940, a son of John Henry China and the late Mary Alice Johnson. He was a member of St. James Baptist Church, where he sang in the choir. He was retired from Georgia Pacific Particle Board Manufacturing in Russellville. Survivors, in addition to his father of Greeleyville, are: his wife, Mrs. Margie Nell China of the home; one son, Marvin China of Greeleyville; three daughters, Gwendolyn McCutchen of St. Stephen, Mrs. Jackie Montgomery of Greeleyville and Tamika Chavis of Moncks Corner; three brothers, Freddie Jerome China, James China and Ricky China, all of Greeleyville; two sisters, Mrs. Dorothy Mack and Margie Collins, both of Greeleyville; a special aunt who was like a mother, Mrs. Marie China of Greeleyville; a special sister-in-law who was like a daughter, Mrs. Zariah McCray of Greeley-ville; and seven grandchildren.
WILLIAM FRIERSON, SR. -- William Robert Frierson, Sr., 82, husband of Julia Evans Frierson, died Tues., Feb. 22, 2005, at Sterling House. Funeral services, conducted by Rev. Stephen Taylor and Rev. Brad Gray, were held Thurs., Feb. 24, 2005, at Trinity United Methodist Church. Burial, directed by Elmore Hill McCreight Funeral Home and Crematory, followed at Evergreen Memorial Park Cemetery. Born in Charleston, he was a son of the late Joseph Terrell Frierson and Elise Lesesne Frierson and grew up in the Mouzon Community of Williamsburg County. He was a member of Trinity United Methodist Church. He was a U.S. Navy World War II veteran and served as a Navy Medic in the South Pacific Theater at the Battle of Guadalcanal. He was a retired salesman with American Bakeries Company and a member of American Legion Post #15. Survivors, in addition to his wife of Sumter, are: two sons, W. Robert Frierson, Jr., and Dr. Richard L. Frierson, both of Columbia; one brother, J. Francis Frierson of Columbia; one sister, Elizabeth Dickert of Greenwood; and two grandchildren. Memorials may be made to Trinity United Methodist Church, 226 W. Liberty Street, Sumter, S.C. 29150.
LOUISE JOHNSON -- Funeral services for Louise R. Johnson, conducted by Rev. Edward McLeod, were held Mon., Feb. 28, 2005, at Wilson United Methodist Church in Greeleyville. Burial, directed by Dimery and Rogers Funeral Home, followed in Big Spring Cemetery. Mrs. Johnson, 84, died Tues., Feb. 22, 2005, at Roper St. Francis Medical Center Berkeley in Moncks Corner. She was born Dec. 29, 1920, a daughter of the late Lee Joe and Lorine Joe. She was a member of Wilson United Methodist Church, where she served as a Communion Steward and sang on the Senior Choir. She was a member of The Willing Workers Club and The Friendship Club. She was married to the late Hiwatha Johnson. Survivors are: two daughters, Mrs. Wilhelmenia Sabb of Greeleyville and Irene Johnson of Brooklyn, New York; four sisters, Mrs. Vigiree Mitchell of Bronx, New York, Mrs. Mary Lena McFadden of Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, Mrs. Barbara Jean Collin of Patterson, New Jersey, and Mrs. Celie Murray of Troy, New York; five brothers, James Joe of Greeleyville, Albert Davis of Salters, Nathaniel Joe of Patterson, New Jersey, Benjamin Joe of Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, and Cornelius Joe of Branchville; 10 grandchildren; 24 great-grandchildren and seven great-great grandchildren.
ESAU HAMMOND -- Funeral services for Esau Carol Hammond, conducted by Rev. C.L. Coleman, were held Sat., Feb. 26, 2005, at Evangelistic Temple Way of The Cross in Kingstree. Burial, directed by Dimery and Rogers Funeral Home, followed in St. Mary AME Church Cemetery in Salters. Mr. Hammond, 62, died Tues., Feb. 22, 2005, at his home in Holly Hill. He was born March 9, 1942, a son of the late Lee Hammond and Eva Varner Hammond. He was a member of Ranzie Grove Baptist Church. He was also a veteran of the U.S. Army. Survivors are: his wife, Mrs. Loree Ashmore Hammond of Salters; three sons, Derrick Hammond of Lancaster, Pennsyl-vania, Vincent Hammond of Maryland and Johnnie Walters of Pensacola, Florida; three daughters, Melanie Hammond of Salters, Mrs. Latrilla Izzard of Maryland and Mrs. Mattie Fulton of Kingstree; six brothers, James Hammond and Herbert Ham-mond, both of Salters, Clarence Hammond and Silas Hammond, both of Arlington, Virginia, Jacob Hammond of New Haven, Connecticut, and Paul Hammond of Maryland; three sisters, Mrs. Ida Grant of Charleston, Mrs. Ruth Wallace of Salters and Mrs. Margaret Chandler; seven grandchildren and one great-grandchild.
ELIZABETH STACKLEY -- Funeral services for Mrs. Elizabeth "Lib" Cook Stackley, conducted by Rev. Sam Vernon, were held Wed., Feb. 23, 2005, in the Chapel of Miles Funeral Home in Hazelhurst, Georgia. Burial, directed by Miles Funeral Home, followed at Hazelhurst City Cemetery. She was the wife of Louis J. Stackley. Mrs. Stackley died Sun., Feb. 20, 2005, in the Jeff Davis Hospital. She was a native of Asheville, North Carolina, and was the daughter of the late John Anderson and Cora Mae Philbeck Cook of Florence. She began her career with B.C. Moore and Sons, Inc. in Florence. Later she was transferred to Kingstree, where she was employed for six years. During World War II, she resigned her position with Moore's and left for Washington, D.C., where she was employed by the government. She and her mother were owners of Silver Beach Lodge on Clearwater Lake in Port Sydney, Ontario. She worked through the years at Moore's Department Store in South Carolina, North Carolina and Georgia. She was a member of the First United Methodist Church, where she taught Sunday school, was a member of the United Methodist Women, the Fidelis Sunday school class, the Sugar Sticks, Circle #4, the Senior Citizens & the Forever Young Group. Survivors, in addition to her husband, are: two daughters, Lou-Beth Hines of Walkersville, Maryland; and Kathy-Jo Neese of Palm Harbor, Florida; five grandchildren; and one great-grandchild.
