Posted By: GenealogyBuff.com CHAVIS -- Essie Cooper Chavis, 90, died Thursday, February 26, 1998, at Morehouse Parish Hospital in Bastrop, Louisiana. Funeral services for were held Sun., March 1, at Trio United Methodist Church, conducted by Rev. Gary Adams and Rev. Henry Altman. Burial followed in Suttons United Methodist Churchyard directed by Andrews Chapel of Mayers Funeral Home. Mrs. Chavis was born October 26, 1907, in the Suttons Community of Williamsburg County, a daughter of the late Benjamin Phillip Cooper and Carrie Adella Eagerton Cooper. She was employed by the county public school lunch program for 20 years and was a member of Trio United Methodist Church. Survivors are: two sons, Harold L. Chavis of Athens, Tx.; and Charles B. Chavis of High Point, N.C.; three daughters, Edith C. Brown of Columbia; Deloris C. White of Ladson; and Elsie C. White of Bastrop, La.; and one sister, Vernie Truesdale of Mt. Pleasant.
CUNNINGHAM -- Samuel Martin Cunningham, Jr., 49, of Mt. Pleasant, died Friday, February 27, 1998, in a Charleston hospital. Funeral services were held Monday, March 2, 1998, in the Williamsburg Funeral Home Chapel. Burial followed in Kingstree Memorial Gardens. Mr. Cunningham was born in Kingstree, a son of Mrs. Lucille Fountain Cunningham and the late Samuel Martin Cunningham, Sr. He was a graduate of Kingstree High School and the University of South Carolina, and was the owner of Samuel M. Cunningham, CPA in Mt. Pleasant. He served in the U.S. Army in Vietnam and was a lifetime sponsor of Ducks Unlimited. He was a Presbyterian. Survivors, in addition to his mother of Kingstree, are: three sons, Shannon M. Cunningham of Charleston; Samuel M. Cunningham, III and Michael D. Cunningham, both of Mt. Pleasant; one daughter, Jane L. Cunningham of Mt. Pleasant; one sister, Eleanor C. McCrackin of Hanahan; and one brother, Stuart H. Cunningham of Royal Palm Beach, FL.
HIGBE -- Eleanor Higbe, 91, died Tuesday, March 3, 1998, at Carolinas Hospital System-Kingstree. Funeral services were held Thursday, March 5, 1998, at the graveside in Andrews Memorial Cemetery, conducted by Rev. Thomas R. Cox, Jr. Burial followed directed by Andrews Chapel of Mayer Funeral Home. Mrs. Higbe was born June 15, 1906, in Andrews, a daughter of the late William Becker Higbe and Cassie Kinder Higbe. She was a Methodist. Surviving is one sister, Susie H. Hudson of Maineville, Ohio.
GATHERS -- Funeral services for Jonathan Gathers, Sr. were held Thursday, March 4, 1998, at Good Hope Baptist Church in Greeleyville, conducted by Rev. Tommy Shubrick. Burial followed in Big Spring Cemetery, Greeleyville directed by Dimery and Rogers Funeral Home. Mr. Gathers, 64, died Sunday, March 1, 1998, at Baptist Hospital in Columbia. He was born August 4, 1933, in Mt. Pleasant, a son of the late George Gathers and Emma Lee Myers Gathers. He was a veteran of the United States Army where he was a firefighter. In 1997, he retired from Lane Head Start Center in Lane. He was also a member of the American Legion Post Number #220. He was a member of Good Hope Baptist Church. Survivors are: four sons, Jonathan Gathers, Jr. of Greeleyville; Micheal Gathers of Maryland; Kenneth Gathers of Conway; and Robert Gathers of Snow Camp, N.C.; one daughter, Mrs. Janice Chandler of Atlanta, Ga.; three brothers, Jacob Gathers of Columbia; Esau Gathers of Mt. Pleasant; and John Henry Gathers of New York; four sisters, Mrs. Charlotte Rouse, Mrs. Annie Goodwin, Mrs. Emily Wallace, all of Charleston; and Barbara Gathers of Mt. Pleasant; and his mother-in-law, Mrs. Estelle Middleton of Greeleyville.
MCCRAY -- Funeral services for Samuel Bobby McCray were held Mar. 3, 1998, at Jerusalem United Methodist Church, conducted by Rev. Rufus L. Snowden. Burial followed in the churchıs cemetery directed by Dimery and Rogers Funeral Home. Mr. McCray died Friday, February 27, 1998, at his residence in Salters. He was born December 18, 1925, in Wil-liamsburg County, a son of Manson McCray and Annie Jane Reed McCray. He was a member of Jerusalem United Methodist Church and a member of The Farmers Aide Lodge. Survivors are: five sons, Samuel McCray, Jr. of Baltimore, Maryland; John McCollough of Brooklyn, New York; John Author McCray, Earl McCray and Bobby Lavern McCray, all of Baltimore, Maryland; five daughters, Mrs. Lorraine McCrea of Salters; Mrs. Gloria Crawley of New Jersey; Mrs. Virlee Bradley, Mrs. Cris-tean McClary and Mrs. Cherrie McCray, all of Salters; one granddaughter reared as his own, Teresa Capers of Salters; three brothers, Nehemiah Mc-Crea of Salters; Manson Mc-Cray of Buffalo, New York; and Marion McCray of Tampa, FL.; and three sisters, Mrs. Bessie Faison, Mrs. Alma Tisdale, both of Salters; and Mrs. Irene Scott of North Charleston.
WILLIAMS -- Funeral services for Mrs. Albertha "Roberta" Davis Williams were held March 19, 1998, at St. Matthews Baptist Church in Salters, conducted by Rev. Samuel Burgess. Burial followed in Salters Cemetery directed by Redmond-Richardson Funeral Home. Mrs. Williams, 76, died March 12, 1998, at Richland Memorial Hospital in Columbia. She was born January 24, 1922, in Alcolu, a daughter of the Jerry and Ida Bell Brown Davis. She was a member of St. Matthews Baptist Church. Survivors are: two daughters, Jannie L. Williams of the home; and Mrs. Rosa Robinson of Andrews; and three adopted daughters, Mrs. Margaret Burgess of Columbia; Mrs. Gloria Moore of Salters; and Mrs. Phyliss Beaufort of Kingstree.
McCLARY -- Funeral services for Louis McClary were held March 23, 1998, at Black River Baptist Church in Salters, conducted by Rev. Ernest Scott. Burial followed in Crossroad Cemetery in Salters directed by Dimery and Rodgers Funeral Home. Mr. McClary, 68, died March 17, 1998, at Georgia Baptist Hospital in Atlanta, GA. He was born January 18, 1930, in Kingstree, a son of the late Henry McClary, Sr. and Mary McFadden McClary. He was employed at the Diplomat Golf Course Resort for over 30 years. Survivors are; his wife, Mrs. Paralee Woodberry McClary of Kingstree; five daughters, Mrs. Phyllis Young of New Haven, Conn.; Angela Copeland of Lithonia, Ga.; Perlaura McClary of Morrow, Ga.; Walkin McClary of Hollywood, Fla.; Feech Cooper McClary of Miami, Fla.; three sons, James Louis McClary of Panama City, Fla.; Harold Bradley of New Haven, Conn.; and Vernon Lee McClary of Hallandale, Fla.; one step-daughter, Betty Scott of Ft. Lauderdale, Fla.; one step-son, Elbert Copeland of Morrow, Ga.; five brothers, Henry McClary, Jr. of Alexandria, Va.; James McClary of West Have, Conn.; George Mc-Clary of Greeleyville; Vernon McClary of Hallandale, Fla.; and Ernest McClary of Hallandale, Fla.; and three sisters, Mrs. Thelma Gadson of Bridgeport, Conn.; Mrs. Beatrice Hamilton of Alexandria, Va.; and Mrs. Kathleen Mayes of Philadelphia, Pa.
ANDERSON -- Funeral services for Mrs. Frankie Hanna Anderson were held March 22, 1998, at Elijah United Methodist Church in Kingstree, conducted by Rufus Snowden and Rev. J.P. Thomas. Burial followed in Greenlawn Cemetery directed by Dimery and Rogers. Mrs. Anderson, 67, died March 17, 1998, at Highland Care Center in Queens, New York. She was born Nov. 1, 1930, in Kingstree, a daughter of the late Robbie Hanna and Ethel Wallace Hanna. She was a graduate of Tomlinson High School and Allen University in Columbia. She taught elementary school in Clarendon County and clerk with the U.S. Postal Service in New York. She was a member of Grace Untied Methodist Church in St. Albans, New York. Survivors are: her husband, Thomas Anderson of Queen Village, N.Y.; and three sisters, Mrs. Ruth H. Fulton, Mrs. Bertha Lee Footman and Mrs. Anna Grace Kennedy, all of Kingstree.
McADOO -- Funeral services for Lillie Mae McAdoo were held March 21, 1998, at St. Mary A.M.E. Church in Salters, conducted by Rev. Nathan Morris. Burial followed in St. Mary A.M.E. Church Cemetery directed by Dimery and Rogers. Ms. McAddo, 61, died Tuesday, March 17, 1998, at Carolinas Hospital System-Kingstree. She was born Nov. 26, 1936, in Salters, a daughter of the late Alphonso Hanna, Sr. and Alma McClary. She was employed as a home health care nurse. Survivors are: one adopted daughter, Mrs. Betty Hicks of Salters; four sisters, Mrs. Sara Pressley of Philadelphia, Pa.; Mrs. Alphatine Garnes of Phoenix, Arizona; Mrs. Yvonne Jordan of San Jose, California; and Mrs. Loretta Evans of Atlanta, Ga.; and three brothers, David Williams of Detroit, Michigan; Alphonza Hanna, Jr. of Ridgeway, S.C.; and Marion Hanna of Columbia.
SNOWDEN -- Funeral services for Moses Snowden were held March 21, 1998, at Bethesda United Methodist Church, conducted by Rev. Hayes Gainey. Burial followed in the State Cemetery directed by Dimery and Rogers. Mr. Snowden, 82, died Tuesday, March 17, 1998, at his residence in Kingstree. He was born Dec. 28, 1915, a son of the late Peter Snowden and Martha Cooper Snowden. He was employed as a custodian at Baxter Laboratory. He was a member of Bethesda Untied Methodist Church. Survivors are: one brother, Hughie Snowden of Rochester, N.Y.; three sisters, Mrs. Lena McKnight of Brooklyn, N.Y.; Mrs. Elease Nixon of Andrews; and Mrs. Mattie N. Brown of Lake City.
