Posted By: GenealogyBuff.com BROWN -- Funeral services for Mrs. Essie Lynah Brown were held March 21, 1998, at Antioch Baptist Church in Lane, conducted by Rev. E. B. Holmes. Burial followed in Marion Memorial Garden Cemetery in Lane directed by Dimery and Rogers Funeral Home. Mrs. Brown, 52, died Tuesday, March 17, 1998, at Carolinas Hospital System-Florence. She was born Dec. 9, 1945, in Berkeley County, a daughter of the late Ted Lynah and Rebecca Morant Lynah. She was employed as a payroll supervisor at Manhattan State Mental Hospital in New York. She worked in Williamsburg County Public School System and also as a private duty nurse. She was a member of Antioch Baptist Church. Survivors are: her husband, Robert Brown, Jr. of Lane; two sons, Stuart Lynah of Kingstree; and Hussain Kates of Cades; two sisters, Mrs. Barbara Vickers of Charlotte, N.C.; and Mrs. Martha Pendergrass of Kingstree; and seven brothers, Walter Lynah of Hughee; Casey Lynah and Charlie Lynah, both of Charlotte, N.C.; Frank Lynah; Aaron Lynah, Ernest Lynah and Arthur Lynah, both of Brooklyn, N.Y.
McELVEEN -- Funeral services for Mrs. Lucille Pritchard McElveen were held Thursday, March 26, 1998, at Oak Grove Missionary Baptist Church in Salters, conducted by Rev. C. W. Green. Burial followed in the Porter-Ferrell Cemetery in Salters directed by Redmond-Richardson Funeral Home. Mrs. McElveen, 48, died Saturday, March 26, 1998, at Carolinas Hospital System-Florence. She was born February 20, 1950, in Williamsburg County, the daughter of Mrs. Mary Bradshaw Pritchard. She was a nursing assistant student at Williamsburg Technical College where she was on the honor roll. She was a member of Oak Grove Baptist Church. She was a Scout Leader of Oak Grove Girl Scout Troop and Boy Scout Den Mother. She worked for a number of years at Warsaw Manufacturing, Oxford Manufacturing and Camelot Apparel. Survivors, in addition to her mother of Kingstree, are: her husband, Smith McElveen of Salters; one daughter, Valerie McElveen of the home; one step-daughter, Teresa McElveen of Sumter; one adopted daughter, Denise Riggins of Salters; two brothers, Roy Rodgers of Baltimore, Md.; and James Lee Ludd of Fayetteville, S.C.; seven sisters, Mrs. Magerline Burgess, Mrs. Ida McClary, Mrs. Patricia Mabry and Connie Madison, all of Kingstree; Mrs. Dorothy Graham of Sal-ters; Bobbie Jean Wilson and Mrs. Annette Sumter, both of California.
DRISKELL -- Graveside services were held Friday, March 27, 1998, at the McCormick Cemetery in McCormick, S.C. for James Edward Driskell, 80, of North Augusta, S.C., conducted by Rev. Jim Hunter. Mr. Driskell died Wednesday, March 25, 1998, at the Northeast Georgia Medical Center. A native of Monticello, Ga., Mr. Driskell had lived in North Augusta the past 19 years. He was a retired USDA Soil Conservationist and a graduate of Furman University. He was a World War II veteran having served in the United States Army. He was a member of Grace United Methodist Church in North Augusta. Survivors are: his wife, Mrs. Margaret Holloway Driskell of North Augusta; one son, James Edward Driskell, II, of Winter Park, Fla.; one daughter, Joan Driskell Hopkins of Gainesville; and four sisters, Elizabeth Stevens of Davenport, Iowa; Sara Bazemore of Anniston, Al.; Barbara Johnston of Signal Mountain, TN.; Dorothy Driskell of Chattanooga, TN.
JOHNSON -- Funeral services for Willie James Johnson, Sr. were held Saturday, March 28, 1998, at Elijah United Methodist Church in Kingstree, conducted Rev. Rufus Snowden. Burial followed at Elijah United Methodist Church Cemetery directed by Dimery and Rogers Funeral Home. Mr. Johnson, 84, died Sunday, March 22, 1998, at Carolinas Hospital System-Kingstree. He was born December 3, 1913, in Kingstree, a son of the late Joe Johnson and Nancy Williams. He was a retired farmer. He was a member of Elijah United Methodist Church. He was also a member of Mutual Israelite Society and a member of Prospect Masonic Lodge #404. Survivors are: his wife, Mrs. Geneva "Lil" Johnson of the home; three sons, Bennie Johnson and Willie James Johnson, Jr., both of Miami, Fla.; and Franklin Theodore Johnson of Philadelphia, Pa.; and one brother, Thomas Johnson of Jacksonville, Fla.
BURGESS -- Funeral services for Walter "Bun" Levern Burgess were held March 28, 1998, at Dimery and Rogers Funeral Home Chapel. Burial followed at Kingstree Cemetery. Mr. Burgess, 45, died Monday, March 24, 1998, at Carolinas Hospital System-Kingstree. He was born August 15, 1952, in Kingstree, a son of the late Roosevelt Burgess and Viola Alston. He was a farmer. Survivors: one sister, Gladys Alston of Kingstree; two brothers, Roosevelt Burgess, Jr. of Florence; and Frederick Burgess of Lane; and step-sisters, Cynthia Alston of Atlantic City, New Jersey; and Bobbie Jean Wilson of California.
BAYLOR -- Woodrow Wilson Baylor, 80, died March 27, 1998, in a Kingstree nursing home. Funeral services were held Monday, March 30, 1998, in the Williamsburg Funeral Home Chapel. Burial followed in Kingstree Memorial Gardens. Mr. Baylor was born in Williamsburg County, a son of the late Edward Lewis and Jessie Benton Baylor. He was a retired employee of Kingstree Home and Auto Supply and was a member of Kingstree First Baptist Church. He was a Navy veteran of World War II and a member of the American Legion. Survivors are: one daughter, Mrs. Carolyn Thames of Kingstree; one brother, Atwood M. Baylor of Kingstree; and three sisters, Audrey B. Frye and Doris B. Lindsey, both of Charleston; and ArCola B. Morris of Cades.
PITTS -- Dr. Gerald Clark Pitts, 72, died Saturday, April 4, 1998, in the Richland Memorial Hospital in Columbia. Memorial services were held Sunday, April 5, in the Greeleyville Baptist Church, conducted by Rev. Grover Mixon and Rev. Mark Nelson. Burial was held in Westpoint Cemetery in Amsterdam, Mo. directed by Stephens Funeral Home. Born May 30, 1925, in Kansas City, Kansas, he was a son of the late Elmer Jean and Lela Clark Pitts. He was former owner and operator of Pitts Chiropractic Clinic in Manning for 33 years, a former teacher and musician, retired from teaching music at the Manning Middle School and was a Navy veteran of World War II. He was a member of the Greeleyville Baptist Church. He attended Bob Jones University in Greenville and Northwestern College in Minneapolis, MN. and the Lincoln Chiropractic College in Indianapolis, IN. Survivors are: his wife, Alice Lewis Pitts of Manning; two daughters, Melody Pitts of Sumter; and Tammy Pitts of Chapel Hill, N.C.; two sons, Timothy Clark Pitts of Amsterdam, Missouri; and Tommy Mark Pitts of Amsterdam; one brother, E. Dwain Pitts of N. Kansas City, MO.; and one sister, Doris Jean Hydeman of Mission, Kansas.
EPPS -- Mildred (Mitzi) Burke Epps, 88, widow of Barney L. Epps, died Friday, April 3, 1998, in a Kingstree hospital. Funeral services were Sunday, April 5 in Kingstree Memorial Gardens directed by Williamsburg Funeral Home. Mrs. Epps was born in Schenectady, N.Y., a daughter of the late John R. Burke and Sarah Oddy Burke and was a member of Cedar Swamp United Methodist Church. Surviving is one sister, Norma B. Koza of Schenectady, N.Y.
FREEMAN -- James Colin Freeman, 77, died Friday, April 3, 1998, in a Kingstree hospital. Graveside funeral services were held April 6, in Williamsburg Cemetery directed by Williamsburg Funeral Home. Mr. Freeman was born in Darlington County, a son of the late Sim Freeman and Genieva Freeman Munn. He was a retired auto body repairman. Survivors are: his wife, Mrs. Mary Buddin Freeman of Kingstree; one son, Lannis Warren Freeman of Kingstree; and two step-sons, Jack and David Meekins of Kingstree.
HANNA -- William James (Billy) Hanna, Jr., 53, died March 30, 1998, in a Columbia hospital. Memorial services were Wednesday, April 1, 1998, in the Williamsburg Funeral Home Chapel. Mr. Hanna was born in Kingstree, a son of Mrs. Ruby Stone Hanna and the late William James Hanna, Sr. He was a graduate of Kingstree High School and was a retired electrician. He was a member of Acacia Masonic Lodge in Columbia and was a volunteer at Brookgreen Gardens. Survivors, in addition to his mother of Kingstree, are his wife, Johnette Brown Hanna of Lugoff; three sons, Tray Hanna of Blythewood; Stacy Hanna of Puerto Rico; and Clay Hanna of Lugoff; three sisters, Ikey Brown of Kingstree; Jimmie Grace Hanna of Garden City; and Marilea Dooley of Florida; and one brother, Henry F. Hanna of Columbia.
