CONYERS -- Funeral services for Mrs. Maybell Hicks Conyers were held June 12, 1997, at New Friendship Free Will Baptist Church in Kingstree, conducted by Rev. Bernard Paige. Burial followed in Greenlawn Cemetery directed by Dimery and Rogers Funeral Home. Mrs. Conyers, 82, died June 8, 1997, at her residence in Kingstree. She was born July 4, 1914, in Williamsburg County, a daughter of the late Robert Hicks, Jr. and Bina Harrison Hicks. She was a cook for many years at Kingstree Elementary School, Tomlinson High School and Kingstree Senior High School. She was a member of New Friendship Free Will Baptist Church and was chairman of the gospel choir, recording secretary of the church and Sunday school superintendent. Survivors are: one daughter, Mrs. Gloria Jean Davis of the home; four sisters, Mrs. Ruby Washington and Mrs. Magalene Cunningham, both of Kingstree; and Mrs. Alice Ann Eaddy and Mrs. Elease Anderson, both of Johnsonville; and two brothers, Robert Hicks and Willie Hicks, both of Kingstree.

BROCKINGTON -- Funeral services for Jasper Lee "Clyde" Brockington were held Monday, June 9, 1997, at Mt. Zion United Methodist Church in Kingstree, conducted by Rev. Willie Wilson. Burial followed in Kingstree Cemetery directed by Dimery and Rogers Funeral Home.. Mr. Brockington, 56, died Thursday, June 5, 1997, at Carolinas Hospital System-Kingstree. He was born August 1, 1940, in Williamsburg County, a son of the late Porter Brockington and Lela Fulton Brockington. He was employed as a machine operator at Drexel Heritage Furniture Company. He was a member of Mt. Zion United Methodist Church in Kingstree. Survivors are: his wife, Mrs. Sadie Brockington of Kingstree; two sons, Jasper Brockington, Jr. and David Terrell Brockington, both of Kingstree; two duaghters, Shirley Brockington of Florence; and Kameakia Brockington of Kingstree; two brothers, Joe Brockington of Cameron, N.Y.; and Ben Brockington of Kingstree; and three sisters, Mrs. Ella Blyntha of Cincinnati, Ohio; Mrs. Rosa Bull of Kingstree; and Mrs. Edith Scott of Philadelphia, Pa.

GAINEY -- Funeral services for Albert Gainey were held Monday, June 16, 1997, at Faith United Methodist church in Lake City, conducted by Rev. Lillian H. Washington. Burial followed in Faith United Methodist Church Cemetery in Kingstree directed by Redmond-Richardson Funeral Home. Mr. Gainey, 68, died Wednesday, June 11, 1997, at Carolinas Hospital System-Kingstree. He was born February 5, 1928, in Williamsburg County, the son of the late Warren and Sinclare McClam Gainey. Survivors are: three daughters, Mrs. Patricia Ann Shaw of Hollywood, FL; Mrs. Geraldine Burroughs of Sumter; and Mrs. Hattie Mae Wilson of Kingstree; eight sons, Andrew Gainey, James Gainey, Warren Gainey and Jerome Gainey, all of Sumter; Melvin Gainey Burgess of Columbia; William Gainey of Cheyenne, WY; Johnny Gainey of Hollywood, FL; and Joseph Gainey of Atlanta, Ga.; one brother, Hayes Gainey of Kingstree; five sisters, Mrs. Rosa Mae White of Lakewood, FL; Mrs. Jannie McCrea, Mrs. Lucille Cooper, Mrs. Marie McFadden and Mrs. Isabell Benton, all of Kingstree.

REED -- Funeral services for Deacon Mack Julius Reed were held June 21, 1997, at St. John Baptist Church in Greeleyville, conducted by Rev. Talbert Dickson, Bishop J. B. Wilson and Bishop Willie Murray. Burial followed in the Johnson Cemetery in Manning directed by Redmond Richardson Funeral Home. Deacon Reed, 77, died June 16, 1997, at the Carolinas Hospital System-Florence. He was born November 28, 1919, in Clarendon County, a son of the late Aaron and Henrietta Singletary Reed. He was a member of the Progressive Church of Jesus. He worked for a number of years as a farmer and construction worker with John H. Brankley Construction Company in Thomasville, NC. Survivors are: two sons, Andrew Mack Reed and John Louis Reed, both of Thomasville; two daughters, Mrs. Gwendolyn Robinson of Greeleyville and Sharon Cooper of Kingstree and two grandsons he reared as his own, Ernest and Lourie Whack of Salters.

MATTHEWS -- George Ulmer Matthews,69, died June 17, 1997, in McLeod Regional Hospital after a short illness. Funeral services were held Wednesday, June 18, 1997, at Redmond-Richardson Funeral Home. Mr. Matthews was retired from Baxter International. Survivors are; his wife, Mary Matthews; two daughters, Laurie M. Atkinson of Kingstree; and Janet Matthews of Georgia; and two sons, Billy and Corey Matthews of Kingstree; grandchildren, Trey Atkinson, Dee Guy, J.C. Dukes, Crystal Mouzon and Clay Matthews.

EDWARDS -- Funeral services for Maceo Edwards were held Sunday, July 13, 1997, at St. John Apostolic Holiness Church in Greeleyville, conducted by Bishop Kenneth Swaringer. Burial followed in Keels Cemetery in Greeleyville directed by Dimery and Rogers Funeral Home. Mr. Edwards died Wednesday, July 9, 1997, at Carolinas Hospital System-Florence. He was born in October 13, 1921, in Cades, a son of the late Bessie Edwards and Mullie Fulton. He was an Army veteran who fought in World War II. He was employed as a debarker in the logyard at Georgia Pacific. He was a member of St. John Apostolic Holiness Church, where he was a Lead Deacon, Treasurer and a member of the Senior Choir. Survivors are: his wife, Mrs. Lucille Keels Edwards; three sons, Maceo Edwards, Jerry Edwards and Willie Edwards, all of Greeleyville; four daughters, Mrs. Mary Ruth Floyd of Bronx, N.Y.; Mrs. Clementine Johnson of Jacksonville, Fl.; Sadrina Edwards of Greeleyville; and Barbara Montgomery of Sanford, Fl.; three brothers, Leroy Fulton, James Fulton and Edward Fulton, all of Kingstree; and three sisters, Bernice Glover of Bronx, N.Y; Rebecca Fulton and Hattie Ward, both of Washington, D.C.

MATTHEWS Funeral services for James Ernest "Step" Matthews were held Monday, July 7, 1997, at Promiseland Baptist Church in Greeleyville, conducted by Rev. Carl Shaw. Burial followed in Rockyford Cemetery in Greeleyville directed by Dimery and Rogers Funeral Home. Mr. Matthews died Monday, June 30, 1997, at Carolinas Hospital System-Florence. He was born August 20, 1912, in Williamsburg County, a son of the late Chester Matthews and Mary Coard Matthews. He was employed by Georgia Pacific as a truck driver. He was a member of Promiseland Baptist Church, where he was a member of the Trustee Board. Survivors are: one son, Jimmy Wilson Matthews of Wateree, S.C.; and two sisters, Mrs. Marie Barnes of Philadephia, Pa.; and Mrs. Lucilla Singletary of Miami, Fla.

McCREA Funeral services for Lelon McCrea were held Saturday, July 5, 1997, at Greater Bethel A.M.E. Church in Kingstree, conducted by Rev. Charles McLamore. Burial followed at St. Mary A.M.E. Church Cemetery in Salters directed by Dimery and Rogers Funeral Home. Mr. McCrea died Tuesday, July 1, 1997, at Carolinas Hospital System-Florence. He was born August 2, 1921, in Williamsburg County, a son of the late Sam Kellahan McCrea and Viola Davis McCrea. He was a member of Greater Bethel A.M.E. Church. While living in Kingstree, he was employed by Drexel Furniture Company in Kingstree. Later, he moved to New York where he worked in the Garment District for 30 years from which he retired. He was a member of St. Luke A.M.E. Church in New York City. After moving back to Kingstree he served as a member of the Usher Board and the Board of Trustee at Greater Bethel A.M.E. Church. Survivors are: one daughter, Mrs. Diann Smith of Kingstree; three sisters, Mrs. Mae Bell McCrea of Washington, D.C.; Mrs. Ruther Lee McCant of Baltimore, Md.; and Mrs. Annie Mae Davis of Maryland; three brothers, Mackie J. McCrea of Kingstree; Sam McCrea of Durham, N.C.; and Louis McBride of Kingstree; and his mother-in-law, Mrs. Sally Mae Cunningham of Kingstree.

ROGERS -- Lila Brown Utley Rogers of Charlotte, N.C. died on Monday, June 23, 1997, in Charlotte. Funeral services were held in Charlotte on Thursday, June 26, 1997, with a graveside service and burial at Tisdale Cemetery. Mrs. Rogers, 93, a longtime Charlotte resident was born in Williamsburg County, a daughter of John Videau Brown and Emma Tisdale Brown. She was a member of Selwyn Avenue Presbyterian Church Charlotte, where she was active in the nursery department. She was also a member of the Eastern Star. Surviving is one daughter, Peggy Rogers Hendrix of Troutman, N.C.

BAXLEY -- Captain Douglas Durant Baxley, 57, U.S. Air Force retired, died Monday, June 23, 1997, in Durham, N.C. Graveside funeral services, with military honors, were held, Wednesday, June 25, 1997, in Tisdale Cemetery directed by Williamsburg Funeral Home. Captain Baxley was born in Williamsburg County, a son of Mrs. Mattie Lou Scott Baxley and the late Alva D. Baxley. He was a graduate of Clemson University and was a member of Central Presbyterian Church. Survivors, in addition to his mother of Kingstree, are: three sisters, Mrs. Elwood Wiggins and Mrs. Patsy Davis, both of Georgetown; and Libby Baxley of Kingstree; and one brother, Leray Baxley of Kingstree.
